Food (8/10): I had the classics braised pork over rice, pork chop over rice, and the popcorn chicken. The braised pork was my favorite. The ratio of meat to rice was slightly off for my taste but in a good way. At home I'd just help myself to more rice. The side dishes were classic as well and remind me of the bentos in Taiwan. Boba is now an additional $1.00 Most places charge $0.25-0.50 for toppings in drinks. A dollar is ridiculous. The food and drinks are good, standard traditional Taiwanese street food, but the pricing is ridiculous for street food. Pop corn chicken for nearly $9? As close as I've gotten to the little eats and bubble tea in Taiwan. That's an absolutely high amount of praise I'd give, as I have already been four years removed from my previous trip, and failed to find anything that measured up to those high standards. The first time I came, I got the mango milk cloud and popcorn chicken. The chicken was juicy and crispy like it should be; no qualms from me. The mango milk cloud had a pulpy texture, leading me to believe a real mango was in there. It's really good! A bit sweet for me, but definitely a go to recommendation for those who come with a sweet tooth. The second time I got a high mountain milk tea with boba. The cashier described the high mountain tea as a lighter flavor than oolong, not as roasted. Low and behold, it's got a much more mellow, smooth flavor compared to the earthy oolong tones. Super soft and chewy pearls with amazing bursts of flavor from the black sugar. Because the pearls themselves are sweeter than your regular pearls you can get 50% or even 30% sugar and convince yourself that you are living that healthy diet even while getting your boba fix. I've gotten boba drinks here a few times. I've tried the red bean and taro. It's not on their menu in the store, but if you order on their website, you can select a non-dairy option for milk. I always get almond milk and choose regular sweetness. With the almond milk it's not as sweet or creamy, so I'd suggest increasing the sweetness a bit if you like your milk tea on the sweeter side. I've been here both when it's busy and when it's not, and in both instances, it's kind of hard to get the attention of the person up front. I feel like they're always busy fulfilling orders, that they often leave the front unattended. So you have to wait a bit to get your order in or grab your pick up. read more

Stumbled upon this Taiwanese spot the other day and it was so good. I think I might've had the best taro boba ever there. I wanted to rate this higher...but the service was so so bad. We walked in and stood for 10 minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge us and take our order but it was totally empty and no one did. Then when someone finally did and I told them I was part of the Yelp event, they took my phone and went to show it to the manager? And then told us it was an online ordering only event. I would say, this is not a place you should go if you are in a hurry. We ordered the peach green tea with boba and dragonfruit tea with boba and waited around 15-20 minutes for it. While waiting, we saw there is a promotion going on if you take a photo of the restaurant & tag them on Instagram you will receive a free shaved ice dessert. This dessert has marshmallows, chocolate, shaved ice & boba with toppings. We decided to do this and you can get a coupon for later or they can make it for you that day. While drinking our tea we waited for our shaved ice, another 15 minutes. But the desert was delicious and worth trying! I just suggest you order it when you order your tea. If you are feeling a little peckish, don't worry Hello Jasmine also offers a variety of Taiwanese bento boxes to street food. Definitely try their popcorn chicken or their fried combo (cuttle fish, tempura ball, fried green beans, fries, fish tofu, sand sausages). Everything is flavorful and easy to eat on the go. Another plus is that they offer free parking (which a lot of other places in Chinatown you have to pay for parking), but it is often crowded since it is shared with other 3-4 other restaurants in the area. For me, most of their TEA BASED drinks are good. I especially like the roasted oolong milk tea, high mountain tea + cheese foam, and grapefruit green tea. One food I always get is the popcorn chicken. It is a generous portion of Taiwanese style fried chicken nuggets. I think they use thigh meat which is tender and juicy. The chicken is covered with special batter, fried to a light golden color, and seasoned with another special seasoning (LOL) and fried fresh basil. What a great snack. I tried their seasonal drinks/new drinks a couple of times. They were all fine but none of them were better than the regular menu drinks. I thought ordering from the machine was a lot quicker! I just ordered their brown sugar milk tea with less sugar. Their tapioca was AMAZEBALLS. It was cooked to perfection and it had a slight sweetness to it (maybe drenched in honey?) but anyways the drink itself was delicious. Ratio of milk to tea was spot on. Their prices were very reasonable as well. This place can get very busy during the weekend especially after dinner times so if you are trying to grab a bite here too, try to come earlier. read more

TL;DR pretty solid Taiwanese food in a much improved, larger location. I love the 盐酥鸡 aka popcorn chicken but the other food we tried was solid, too. Not too expensive and very fast service. ===== Finally visited their new, larger location in Chinatown! Went on a Sunday night around 7 and it was fairly crowded with just a couple tables empty. I ordered the 卤肉饭便当 aka braised pork over rice bento ($8.75) and the 盐酥鸡 aka popcorn chicken ($8.25). My friend ordered the cold noodles ($6.75) and said they were pretty good. The food comes very quickly and the chicken was really good and pleasantly spicy. The pork rice bowl is definitely better value imo since it comes with a tea egg, pickled vegetables, cabbage, and bok choy as well as pork. There were three main things that keep this place from being a five and the first is that the spoon that came with my food was a little grubby (thankfully mostly on the handle). The second thing is that my friend's cold noodles came with the sauce in a little plastic container on top of the noodles, even though we were dining in and there were sauce bottles that anyone could use near the cashiers. I realize harping on this dinky little plastic sauce container is probably the tip of the earth-killing iceberg that is the waste generated by bubble tea stores, but I thought it was worth pointing out. I hope they eventually just put the sauce over the noodles, or use a more eco-friendly ceramic dish or something to hold it. The third thing is just that the pork was not as flavorful or tender as it could have been. I'm just on a nitpicking rampage now but it would also be nice if they had used a richer, more traditional duck egg instead of a chicken egg. Overall I would come back - a lot easier come here for Taiwanese food than Taipei Cafe, though I will be on the lookout for more flavorful 卤肉饭. read more

I go here for their popcorn chicken. Bite sized pieces of fried chicken that you can get a spicy seasoning on if that's your cup of tea. The basement location can get extremely hot in the summertime as there are only fans and no AC, so I would recommend going to the actual store locations if you don't plan on taking your order to go. For drinks, I've had their taro cloud milk tea, which is super creamy and delicious. I've also had their regular milk tea, which isn't anything special. This place is so delicious and love the ordering system. The parking lot is honestly the only thing that needs a little improvement. First, the food is flavorful, the menu items has a Taiwanese street food vibe to it, but if you don't feel like snaking, there are bento entrees with sides and a small beverage that makes a full meal. My favorite is the popcorn chicken, and the hotdog egg wrap thing, and cold noodles. I love the bubble tea choices too! I'm personally not a traditional bubble tea person, but they have a lot of other options like mango jelly etc. Second, the ordering system is great! You can order on a computer yourself, super simple and easy, they will just call your ticket number when everything is ready. Honestly, everything I had great great here, I do feel like they'd would be better off if they had a little more food options on the menu, but this is enough for me to enjoy every time I come here. I tried their food as well various times - popcorn chicken is great and so are their desserts. I would not recommend their cold noodles, it was unfortunately underwhelming. I also tried their braised pork bowl - it had everything I would want, except I am sensitive to oily food and I found it too greasy for my liking. Parking is free in the lot next to Meet Fresh, but it becomes difficult Fri/Sat night to find a spot right away. Updating my review after coming here for a second time. This time we had food as well. We got the popcorn chicken, chicken cutlet and the pork chop bento. The fried chicken cutlet was pretty good - juicy tender and breaded just nicely. We only got mildly spicy but one of my other friend got something extra spicy but it wasn't really that spicy. So if you're worried about spiceness, mild is definitely what most people in Chicago would consider mild. For the bento, the highlight was the egg. The seasoning was great and I wouldn't mind having another egg. The pickled veggies on the side was a great condiment. They initially got one of our orders wrong but it was quickly corrected.
