Had a great time tonight at the Tucson Food Truck Round-Up. There was a great energy, a ton of…read morepeople, plentiful food selections, and easy and ample parking. One of my friends tweeted that it was "Truck Exhaust + Good Eats". That kind of sums it up. That being said there were also huge lines, I waited for about an hour for MaFooCo and my friend waited an hour and a half for Planet of the Crepes. The food that was well worth the wait, but like a boy scout you should be prepared. Take heed if you plan on going to an event like this, get here when it starts to avoid the long lines or divide and conquer sending members of your group to different trucks and sample together. Our group was able to hit 5 different hot-spot trucks using the divide and conquer approach. Seating is limited so if you have some folding chairs they will come in handy. There is a huge value in this event for those of us who don't work near a food truck. It's a casual and inexpensive way to get to try foods off the beaten path. I will definitely be at the next Round-up!

I didn't actually order any food, but the gentleman I was sitting next to said his burritos was delicious. I cannot personally review the food, but I can say, for finding a random place off the side of the freeway, it is shockingly a good time sipping on a ice cold horchata while taking in the ambiance of a gas station parking lot, from a little fold up table.

The staff is super friendly and deliver orders reasonably quickly (in less than 10 minutes, despite moderately long line). The fry bread is freshly fried and of medium-large size (about 8-9 inches in diameter). The red chili was quite good, if a tiny bit runny, so be sure to grab plenty of napkins and don't try to eat this walking or driving, Lol. The hostess who took my order said they also stake out Casa Video on certain evenings.

They sold out fast, and when they came back on Thursday, I made sure I was first in line no way I was risking missing out twice. Their menu is incredibly easy to read, streamlined, and straight to the point: it's all about the birria. They keep the payment process simple too, cash or card, no drama, just efficiency. I ordered a birria taco and a mulita, which is basically a double-tortilla birria quesadilla situation, and both were absolute standouts. Prices are on point, especially for the quality. You can literally smell the birria before you even get close to the truck. The meat is juicy and seasoned perfectly; you can taste every layer of flavor. And the cheese? I'm convinced they're using Oaxaca cheese because it is incredibly rich and melts just right. Sam Fox of Fox Concept Restaurants (Wildflower, Blanco, Zinburger, Culinary Drop Out) told Ken Foy of Dante's Fire upon opening his Culinary Drop Out directly across the street that "I'm going to put you out of business so fast..." Not too kind nor professional of words to a fellow chef. Well, Dante's Fire is still open and going strong. So Chef Foy decides to do a food truck. So in a slap in the face to "Culinary Dropout," he names it "Culinary Graduate." I think that's funny. Lost some respect for Sam Fox. So, you look at this food truck's menu and you salivate at every item. The worst part of this truck is having to decide what you are going to order. Part of the problem is that the menu items are $10 a pop or more. Not cheap. I decided to go baseline and tried the Sexy Grilled Cheese. Delicious combination of flavors. My only disappointment was the way the bread was grilled. Uneven. Still had plenty of ungrilled white real estate. Not grilled to perfection as my former favorite food truck, Burgerrito (since moved to Tennesee), could do. That will be my bar of standard for grilled sandwiches forever.
