Came here twice in two days. They have very good appetizers and beer. The queso, spicy black bean dip and bean and cheese open quesadilla were delicious appetizers. The pale ale was great beer. I tried both the chicken and beef tacos and bothbeers ok. I wasn't as impressed with the burritos. My vegetarian friends liked the tofu and seitan burritos. The place is small and gets filled up fast, so you want to get there early enough before the crowd starts building up. We waited 30 mins for lunch and dinner, but we were a large group. Stopped here for lunch with some friends on our way to Blackwater falls. The name alone got us to stop, but the food would definitely bring me back!! The decor was a little different, but definitely fitting to the atmosphere- fun and unexpected. Their burritos are huge!! And so is their selection. It was hard to choose because everything sounded good. We ordered a black bean dip as an appetizer. It was spicy, but really good. They have quiet a few vegetarian options and you can order a bowl as a gluten free option!! I ordered the face palm burrito in a bowl with veggie chili. All their burritos come with a side of chips and cole slaw. I'm pretty picky about cole slaw, and this was good. I wish I had gotten more. The staff was friendly and directed my family I'd five upstairs to wait for a table. I know burritos like R Kelly knows minors and I'm here to say this place is L-E-G-I-T! I was wary due to this particular establishment being 3,000 mi away from the Mecca of Mexican food (California, duh). But my fears were soon assuaged by the awesome local IPA and the New Wave over the air waves (The Smiths "Hand In Glove" anyone?). My burrito was stuffed with goodness and to my surprise spicy enough for my west coast pallet. The staff was funky and friendly fo sho! I'm only giving it 4 stars because I don't believe in grade inflation but for the area it is a solid 10/5. While trout fishing the West Fork of the Greenbrier River we ran into a chef and after catching limits of brook trout we sat and chatted about the West Virginia food scene (you are correct, it wasn't a long conversation). We told him we were headed to Blackwater Falls and asked if we should eat in Elkins or on the way in Davis. He told us we'd be safe stopping at Hellbender Burritos. He was correct. Hellbender is a go-to spot for a quick lunch or dinner while in Davis, which I'm guessing is either for skiing or Blackwater Falls. While the service is average (they need more than one guy serving the entire restaurant, even though it's small) the food is better than average and affordable. This is a sit down restaurant and a small, cozy one. Hellbender succeeds by rolling up massive burritos that are so large I doubt many can finish them. In fact, they weigh far more than a pound. Meanwhile, this doesn't taste anything like Moe's Southwest Grill or Chipotle. It's fresh, has tons of flavor and comes in massive portions. Fortunately, there's something for everyone, too. Chicken, tofu, steak, pulled pork, black bean and pulled pork are available and come in either a create your own style or a pre-designed burrito, like The Admiral or Gendarme, which we tried. Both were awesome! Check out the ingredients on any of them. You'll be excited to try one. The chips are restaurant style, but the salsa is clearly homemade as is the guacamole. I'd recommend both to anyone. As for the Green Chili Stew, I wasn't impressed, not after spending so much time eating in New Mexico and Southern Colorado. This spot is DEFINITELY a must to check out when you find yourself in Canaan Valley. Their food is like American-new fused with Mexican. Well... let's put it more bluntly-- it is hippie Mex-American. More American than Mexican. A burrito that is named "treehugger" does trigger an image of long hair with braids with tie-dye shirts (the bartender has a braided ponytail, so it is pretty close). And "Treehugger" was what I had-- I love it. (However I will make sure to make a request to remove olives from my burrito-- I hate olives!). It got broccoli, mushrooms, guacamole, and pico de gallo... my favorites! Try their cilantro lime rice! veryyyyyyy good. Will definitely try make my own cilantro lime rice at home. The only thing that I was SLIGHTLY disappointed... they do offer tortilla chips.....with a side dish of coleslaw. Com'on, no salsa? Boo. But YAY for Delicious Lima-shaped Burritos that are stuffed creatively! I definitely will suggest this spot for anybody who is driving through to get up to Canaan Valley or Blackwater Falls. This place is a MUST if you are anywhere near Davis, WV. We decided to give it shot, because when it comes to feeding 3 active teenage boys - burritos are usually at the top of their "hit list". If there is such a thing as a burrito connoisseur, I have three of them and their standards are very high. Each of them ordered specialty burritos, which were made to their specific instructions. All of the ingredients were fresh and the size of the burritos boarders on "ginormous". If you plan on making a trip to Hellbender, make sure you are hungry, otherwise you will be taking food home with you. This is one of those "hole-in-the-wall" gems that you have to check out. There is a small bar downstairs with some craft beers, which adds some charm to the place. But, the biggest attraction for us was the fact they advertise they do NOT have FREE wifi and encourage everyone to talk to each other - which is nice when you have teenagers. If you are driving through the Canaan valley area PULL OVER HERE, Hellbender's is worth it! Three friends and I ate here yesterday afternoon. Friendly service. There was only 1 server and the place was pretty happenin'. The guacamole is fresh and flavorful, the chips are ok. One of us tried 'the hellbender' specialty burrito, said it was great. The rest of us ordered customized burritos which we all enjoyed. The seitan in one of our burritos was a little too sweet so he just picked it out. The portion sizes are impressive, making it all the more exciting to see your glorious bundle of deliciousness coming your way from the kitchen. We left refueled and super satisfied. Who knew West Virginia was famous for burritos. Hellbenders apparently is an endangered species of lizard what that has to do with burritos I'll never know but hopefully this place isn't threatened with extinction like its namesake because they do burritos quite well. Place is deceptive big, from the outside it looks like a carryout only kind of spot. It is located in the main "downtown" area of Davis and looks like a little hole in the wall from the outside, once you enter through the place is actually quite spacious on the inside. There are two rooms where you can sit and enjoy your meal, especially good for Saturdays as this is a big place to watch Mountaineer football. Staff is friendly and helpful, they just have that down home West Virginia charm I guess as every in the general area is pretty nice. Love the decor, especially the decorations in the bathroom, the X-files play set was especially cool to me. Great burritos, they have a variety of proteins to choose from, I went with the pork, moist, well seasoned and nicely put together. Burrito was a nice size and very filling, I couldn't finish it all in one setting and made for a nice meal the next day after a quick warm up in the microwave. While the Hellbenders might not be long for this world, hopefully their fate won't come to this place as good burritos are hard to come by and they do it well. read more

This will be a great apres-ski place after a day at Canaan or Timberline. It's casual, so showing up in ski gear won't be a problem. We also shared a pumpkin cheesecake. Loved this unassuming place in the middle of nowhere, West Virginia! We stopped there to grab something to eat before going to see the Blackwaters Falls State Park. We weren't expecting a lot from Davis, but this place definitely stood out as an unexpectedly good location. First of all, the food here is really good! The chips and salsa/guac were absolutely amazing and the burritos were as well on par. Not only the burritos were delicious, they were well-packed as well, making them impossible to finish even for someone as hungry as we were. The internal decoration here is amazing as well - the wooden interior, abundant wall-decoration and elements of rusticness of West Virginian interior, such as a burning cast iron stove, all combined into a timeless and location-less feeling, just giving to that place a special, particular vibe that was just so enjoyable. The service was great as well - not too insistent, not trying to be overly friendly, but always there, always on point. Everything here is delicious! (Well, except for the tortilla chips.) I make sure to stop at Hellbender whenever I'm in town. They have stellar vegetarian options that pack a lot of flavor and leave you feeling full. I'm a big fan of the Lost Hiker and the Veggie Face Plant. The spinach balls are excellent as well. If you go in the fall, the pumpkin cheesecake is scrumptious. I come from a major metropolitan area and can't find any burrito place as unique or delicious as Hellbender. read more

After a day on the slopes, we ventured into Davis to see if we could find a coffee shop. After ordering a latte at the Trail Head Coffee we started talking to the barista and a customer of where to grab dinner. Hellbender was their first recommendation. We walked around the town and decided that a burrito was in our future. Walking in the restaurant you immediately get the impression that this has the possibility to be an awesome 'hole-in-the-wall' experience. Now my impression might have been different on a hot summer day, but given that it was in the low teens and they had a warm potbelly stove heating the room, I think my impression was probably correct. The menu had a ton of different burritos but I decided to go with a classic barbacoa with cilantro lime rice and the works. The plate came out and burrito went from on side to the other and was stuffed to the point that I was sure that the tortilla was going to bust. The first bite consisted of the cilantro lime rice. The rice was outstanding. I worked my way through most of the burrito before I called it quits. I would say that this was on my top list of five burrito joints and if you are in Davis WV, something that I would not miss out on.
