Catered a work event with Helga's, and the entire experience was fantastic! I organized a work event at our office for about 75 people, and I reached out to Helga's since they were a local company and had some interesting options. The initial discussion with pricing, options, etc. was very smooth, and Lynda was prompt in replying to my questions. I was also able to do a site walkaround with Michael to make sure the venue had the appropriate space and resources available to the Helga's team, but the staff ended up being very self-sufficient! Additionally, we had a last minute event location change due to weather, but the staff again was very accommodating and adapted quickly. The staff was very professional throughout the night, and the food and beverage service was a hit with the crowd. We used Hegla's for our October 2007 wedding. The good: The food was delicious. The bad and ugly: They were pretty bad about communicating with us in a timely manner. We would call with questions/concerns etc and have to call three and four times before getting a call back. This was added stress in the weeks before our wedding that we really didn't need. Helga's catered a brunch on Labor Day weekend for about 40 people and they did a GREAT job. Hernan and Miriam were completely prepared, organized and professional. The two of them set up the space attractively and effectively in plenty of time before the arrival of our guests. As people arrived, their food and drink needs were immediately met by Helga's great catering duo. Beforehand Helga's was flexible in dealing with our needs and occasional indecision on logistics and things like tents and number of chairs. It all worked out very well--and most of the negotiating was through email. A big time-saver for us. Only reason this is not a 5 star is that the bacon was not crisp (a personal choice, i know) and the egg frittata could have had a bit more pizazz. read more

I organized a family event with Helga's Caterers back in early 2020 as part of a special weekend celebration at Arlington National Cemetery. The staff was extremely helpful in helping me choose from the many wonderful menu options available. Needless to say, once COVID-19 hit and things were shut down, our event at ANC was cancelled and rescheduled...not one time, but three times between April 2020 and April 2021! I was so very grateful to Helga's for sticking with me during the uncertain time. Finally, on April 10, 2021, we held a modified version of our original event. Two of Helga's best employees/servers (Gerald and Mario) came to our private rental home in Washington, DC and set up the best garden party we could have imagined! They were true experts in their fields...from serving passed hors d'oeuvres to handling the bar, to carving the beef tenderloin! But enough about the fantastic staff...it was the wonderful and delicious food that took center stage! Everyone at our party raved about all of the food. Seriously, it was THAT GOOD! The night turned out to be everything I had hoped for and more. I only hope that at some point I will need to be in the DC area again and need catering...I will definitely choose Helga's Catering! Had a 125 person wedding, would highly recommend Helga's catering to anyone for any event but especially weddings. They are affordable, and you get way more than you pay for. We had a very tight budget and Helga's was incredibly accommodating to it, while still providing excellent service. Helgas catering was such a highlight of our wedding day. Wedding planning is typically stressful, but Helgas took stress from our lives in every way imaginable. The service we received from Michael and his team is top notch. Any time I'd have a random thought or stressor, Michael would simply smile and provide a list of every way he could make our wedding perfect. He is flexible, patient, and exactly the type of person you want to work with. The value of the food that Helgas provides is unmatched. Our dinner was phenomenal, and guests enthusiastically took every opportunity for seconds. One of the most beautiful surprises was just how gorgeous our cocktail hour was. Michael described to us a spread of fruits, cheeses, vegetables, breads, and crab dip, but oh MY was it beautiful and so much more than expected. They added touches of fresh greenery to the buffet tables, and they arranged the appetizers to where it was almost too pretty to touch. They also took our cookie table tradition with stride, and took our 2,000+ homemade cookies and arranged them in a stunning display. We actually forgot to grab our small tray of leftovers from dinner after we stayed the night at our venue, and we drove over an hour back to our venue to grab them because the food was just that good! Helgas took such care of everyone, with extra attention to my husband and me as we were immediately brought a tray with every drink we could think to choose from and a plentiful spread of appetizers during cocktail hour. Despite having a buffet, Helgas served my husband and me the whole night, making sure that we were treated like royalty. Helga's catered our 100 person wedding in August and they were amazing. The food at the wedding tasted exactly as it had at the tasting (which I have heard is not always true with wedding caterers). The service was amazing. They kept bringing us water and beer and even made a special to-go box for my husband and I since we barely ate during the reception. They made us a special plate of food for our short quiet time right after the ceremony. Michael was great with all the logistics. He visited the venue with us when we asked, he made sure every food item was vegetarian (since we had a vegetarian wedding) and was just a great guy to work with. Among the caterers from whom we received proposals, Helga's was a frontrunner from the start because of their professionalism and their helpfulness in terms of sticking to our budget. My husband and I were planning a wedding on a Marine Corps schedule.... from out of town. We didn't have the luxury (or pleasure!) of getting to taste test our way through the wedding planning process to choose our favorite. Instead, we relied on recommendations from our venue, and chose the caterer that gave us the best deal with the best reviews, and was responsive to work with! We chose Helga's after The Briar Patch B&B advertised a special package deal that included appetizers, the main course, china and linen rentals, and the waitstaff/bartender we needed! We never met in person before the wedding day and I'd never even gotten to try the food we selected, but what an incredible experience! Helga's Caterers went above and beyond both before and after the wedding. Their staff was fun, helpful and attentive every step of the way, the place settings were beautiful, the food DELICIOUS, and their event staff really rolled with the punches! My brother surprised my husband with a keg of root beer soda, and we didn't tell Helga's that it was coming (oversight!). Without skipping a beat, the bartender tapped the keg and started serving root beer. When another family member showed up with unplanned ice cream at the reception to make root beer floats, Helga's staff started preparing floats and table serving them to our guests! My family and friends had rave reviews about the food, but I can't express enough how big of a role Helga's Catering played in making our day so incredibly special even down to the smallest detail. Helga's catered out June 2012 wedding and we couldn't have been more pleased!! Food: All of our guests have told us how much they loved the food! Tom came up with our Maine-themed menu and it was delicious and creative. The presentation was beautifully done and the portions were generous (we had 65 people). Service: The staff was incredibly responsive - they kept in touch with us throughout the planning period, and immediately returned our calls and emails. The waitstaff at our wedding was great too. We just used Helga's Catering for our April 2008 wedding and can recommend them highly. Here's why: The food is better than any other caterer we tried and everyone complimented our selection.. The service at the wedding was fantastic - they continually went above and beyond to make our day work for us - without us having to do a thing. I never had to worry because they took care of everything. The service in planning the reception was unbelievable. I understand the previous reviewer's concern about being hard to get in touch with immediately, but every question I had was addressed quickly and thoroughly. The management team is directly involved and looking to make things work for their clients. I never once felt like I was getting ripped off - a frequent complaint when planning a wedding. They do everything - so any rentals you need can be arranged through Helga's (we needed tables, chairs, dance floor, tent.....) I have lots of anecdotes regarding the many things they did to make our event work - and I am happy to share them. Tom Evans spent hours making sure that everything was in order in case it rained (we were having an outdoor wedding) and found ways for us to cut costs and work within our budget too. The best part of using Helga's is that they so obviously love what they do and want to make your event perfect. We talked with and considered other caterers, and Helga's was the only one that met all our needs and truly defined "service with a smile" .
