Review Classic Catering Wedding Services May 24, 2026 Bottom Line Up Front: This caterer did not provide all services specified in the contract, was unresponsive when problems arose, and provided ok-not-great food. They employ hard-working staff with minimal English so communication was an issue. We would not recommend them. Background and Contract This was an upscale wedding held at a bucolic rural residence in Waterford VA on Memorial Day Weekend 2026. There were 160 guests. Customer has hosted three previous weddings, including one only eight months prior, and has experienced numerous upscale weddings. The setup was on open property, on grassy farmland. The wedding celebration included a pre-ceremony activity (no/minimal food/drink with a few chairs), a wedding ceremony (chairs in rows under a tent), a post-ceremony cocktail reception (servers offering passed drinks, passed hors d'oeuvres outdoors, open bar, table with light refreshments/dips), dinner (servers, tables/chairs under a tent plus buffet serving table with steam serving equipment), dancing/dessert (dessert bar with servers), after dinner campfire (arranged by the venue) with "s'mores" (marshmallows/chocolate bars/graham crackers) (to be set up by servers). Classic Catering was selected as the catering service because they had experience at the venue, and because online reviews seemed favorable. The written contract included: 1. Servers and bartenders, event supervisor 2. Food including hors d'oeuvres, light refreshments, dinner, dessert 3. Setup of all chairs and tables for dinner, chairs for ceremony, plus bar and cocktail area, dessert area, s'mores station 4. Cleanup/takedown of food, trash, chairs, tables. The contract also included some special touches: 5. Appetizers served to the bride and groom so they would have them immediately after the ceremony (during a special seclusion time) 6. Extra plates during dinner for people who want a second helping of food 7. Passed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres after the ceremony. Servers were instructed to approach guests and circulate so that all guests desiring food/drink could be served without waiting in a line for food/bar/drink. Basic Agreements and Promises by Caterer 1. Customer hired a wedding planner. They provided a timeline and setup specifications to Caterer. Communications to caterer were crystal clear. 2. Customer/coordinator held a walk-through specifically for the caterer a few weeks before the wedding. Caterer did not attend (claiming an emergency), and only called to cancel one hour before the appointment time. 3. Customer/coordinator sent a detailed timetable for the event. There was no question what was supposed to happen when. Dessert was set up at 8:15; the timetable clearly specified 9:00PM 4. It is challenging to provide a hot meal for 160 people eating under a tent in a farm field. This requires food selection and preparation to remain fresh, hot, and appetizing on steam trays, with food being kept hot for a long time. All of this was known and discussed in advance, and caterer was expected to plan accordingly. 5. Customer/wedding coordinator sent several texts, emails, and voice mails providing instructions, including special updates the day before and day of because of rain the day before, but no rain the day of the wedding. As can be seen below, these instructions were either not received, not passed along, or disregarded. For example, the wedding coordinator texted Sandy (sales representative from Classic Catering) at 10AM to say we were going back to the original set up for the cocktail hour and dessert. The onsite catering staff never got that message, had no clue, and this caused delay and rework. 6. Caterer promised to have supervisors on site to instruct staff. On wedding day, the supervisor demonstrated lack of experience and inadequate English. Communication, proactive management, and responsiveness were lacking. Experience on Wedding Day 1. In the days before the ceremony and that day, there was rain in the area. It was evident that the ground would be wet and muddy. Catering staff used a truck that could not drive across the fields, and so they had to unload far from the wedding area. This caused delays and tired workers before the wedding activities even started. 2. Caterer provided inexperienced staff who did not speak English. Basic hospitality skills were lacking. 3. Catering staff contracted to set up chairs and tables for the ceremony and the dinner. This is a major effort that requires many hands, and only the caterer has this number of personnel. Catering staff seemed unaware that they were responsible. The staff had no setup instructions, though these had been provided to the caterer. The staff did not speak English so they were hesitant and unresponsive. The wedding coordinator and her helper wound up moving tables and chairs and performing much/most of the setup, along with the bartender (one of the few catering staff who spoke English). There is always plenty of food but it's not even mediocre. I just had two little deserts from Classic Catering and they were gelatinous and disgusting. What a waste of ingredients. It is hard to put into words how incredible the Classic Catering team truly is. We booked CC for both our rehearsal dinner and our wedding - two events that we wanted entirely different themes/vibes for -- and they delivered flawlessly on both, showing how adaptable they are and the close attention to detail. Sandy understood my vision for the rehearsal dinner - winery, family style Italian, and even went so far as to order special plates and glasses to match my Pinterest inspiration for the tablescape. Our wedding was an NYE party - we wanted a variety of foods served in a cocktail style, to keep the guests on their toes and excited for the variety in each station. Sandy even went above and beyond for my vision of have late night snacks -- chicken sandwiches, pretzels, popcorn and ordered personalized bags with our names and wedding dates without me asking. And most importantly, our guests LOVED the food. Sasha was excellent, and Norma's service on the day of our events was absolutely incredible. She was so attentive, and the entire team made sure to work around me being gluten free so I could still enjoy all the food. My first assignment at my new job in September was to plan and execute a poker tournament for our clients. After researching several caterers and requesting proposals I felt Classic Catering was the best choice, and they did not disappoint. Sandy understood exactly what kind of food we would need for the event and came up with a great menu consisting of food that would be easy for people to eat while playing cards. Nothing required two hands or silverware and was absolutely delicious. We got raves from all of the guests, and toward the end of the night my new boss came to me and said, "Make sure you keep this caterer's contact info, we're going to be using them again. We've done this event for years and this is by far the best food we've ever had. Well done!" We're using Classic Catering again currently because we'll be sending lunch to the offices of 16 of our clients throughout the DMV. Once again Sandy has nailed the menu, and has been able to accommodate all of the (surprisingly many) dietary restrictions, including gluten free, dairy free, and Kosher, without blinking an eye. The deliveries will be taking place over two days next week and Sandy has got them planned down to the minute. I'm really looking forward to hearing back from our clients about it. I have the feeling Classic Catering is about to score some new customers. UPDATE: The Client Appreciation lunch deliveries took place this week and were a smashing success. Sandy enlisted multiple drivers to make sure each delivery arrived within the time window I'd requested. Shortly afterward I started receiving emails from our clients raving about the food and the presentation. We had provided Classic Catering with bags with our logo on them that we wanted them to use as individual lunches. Sandy took it a step beyond and used tissue paper to make each bagged lunch look like a gift. She used green tissue paper to identify the lunches for people with dietary restrictions. From the very beginning of our conversation, Deborah was prompt with her responses. Because I had a very limited budget and I needed enough food to feed 75 people, I let Deborah have the autonomy to propose me a menu. Deborah not only had the best bang for the buck, but I appreciated that she was cordial the entire time from start to finish. Within a matter of a couple of days, Deborah, my colleague, and I had hashed out a menu and quantity of the items. We signed the contract and made the payment. We were ready to go! One of the things that I appreciated a lot about Classic Catering is that they accept all major credit cards (Amex and Discover included, woo!) and this made doing business with them even more so convenient for me. The day of the event, Deborah's delivery team were in communication with me as they were en route, even informing me of a road accident that delayed the delivery by 20 minutes. The team called me when they were onsite, they set up the food, and were on their way out in no more than 10-15 minutes. I have nothing but nice things to say about Classic Catering and Sandy, maybe too many things so I'll bullet point them. Our wedding was originally last year, but due to COVID we had to push it to this year. - When we came for our tasting, the table was set up beautifully, and there was literally so much food. Everything tasted amazing and Sandy was so hospitable and kind. - Since we made a lot of changes to our wedding and even had to change venues, we opted for heavy appetizers all night instead of a traditional dinner or buffet. At one point I even changed the entire menu to serve more carb-heavy food. I felt so bad because it was only a few weeks from the wedding, but Sandy was more than happy to make the changes and was even going back and forth with menu ideas. - Sandy was very understanding about our budget concerns. At one point we discussed removing some items to slightly lower the price, and she was really honest with our expectations and what she could do to help. - We wanted to include a kid's area for my husband's nieces and nephews, and Sandy was all about it. She took the idea and had fun with it - she covered the tables in white kraft paper, brought mini pumpkins, candy, cookies, and water-soluble markers. The setup was amazing and the kids had SO MUCH FUN. Some people even came up to me and said they wished their kids would have come just for that. I love her for that! - Some of my friends are vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free, and Sandy was so considerate with the menu items. She offered to make the mashed potatoes vegan (made with water and vegan butter) and to make the quinoa cakes vegan and gf. - Lastly, the food was amazing. Deborah Alessio does an amazing job. We hired her to cater a 60th birthday party with a Casino night theme. She developed a menu that was high quality and just as fun as the games were.
