So on my last visit, we had a little incident. Out of loyalty, I'm not gonna drop a star. Why? Because my family has been eating here since 1969 and this was only ONE incident out of 52 years. But, I am gonna say what happened to make you future patrons more aware to pay attention to the prices when they're ringing you up. Long story short, girl at the register tried to over charge me THEN argued with me about why she was over charging me by claiming: 1) The Menu was old (lie) 2) It was higher because of the tax (lie) 3) An extra credit card charge (lie) One of her Coworkers came over and helped her out on the register. He rang me up correctly. So I'm guessing the girl is new? The owner came over to check what was going on and I told him straight out she was trying to over charge me. He apologized. She, however, did not apologize. She tried to argue with me when she was the one who made the error. Then, she started talking about me in Spanish to her coworker as if I didn't understand her. So! Be mindful of the prices when you order because you may be overcharged, which personally I don't think is okay. Did I mention my family has been eating at Helen's since 1969? 52 years! I'm happy to say Helen's is still serving delicious food. Seems Italian, but the family is Greek! Highly recommend trying the other items on their menu! Pizza is good, but you gotta try the other items as well! The food...still delicious! 52 years in my family and they're still consistent! A staple pizzeria in the heart of JC. I'm glad they're still around :) I will always hit up Helen's whenever I visit JC.

I attempted to get food here. I was at the counter for a couple minutes but was ignored by all the employees. So I very loudly said "is there anybody that can help me" and they still continued to ignore me. I'm really not sure why. I think that if you are the person that makes the pizza, it doesn't hurt to say things like "you can order over there", and if you are the person who takes the order but are busy, you can say things like "I'll be right with you". I'm not sure how a customer can walk into a business and their presence not be acknowledged. I don't like to write reviews like this but Helen's Pizza deserves 0 stars for ignoring me the way they did.

Grilled Chix Broccoli...

Ordered our usual grilled chicken and broccoli pie from Helen's since we were in the hood. Called ahead for pick up. Located on part of the Newark Avenue strip closed off to cars which makes it extremely difficult to find parking. Parked and walked several blocks to pick up the pie. The pie itself is well presented. The ratio of toppings was good. The grilled chicken had an unrecognizable taste almost like a hint of bbq. The crust was crunchy and a little doughy. The bottom was nice and dry (a wet center of pie is the worst). Overall it was ok but expect a little more for my pizza dinner. I would stop in for a slice if in the neighborhood but would not make a special trip to dine there due to the traffic and difficulty with parking.

Stopped by for a few slices. The pizza was a bit on the expensive side at 4.5/slice but I suppose that's expected these days. The slice had good texture but was overly salty. Every bite made my brain hesitant to take another bite. Weird pizza eating experience. Service was reasonable for a pizzeria.

Pizza is good, not the thinnest crust. Grilled chicken in garlic/olive oil with broccoli is good. Good service. Value is good for the price.

Reputedly one of the best pizzerias in the New York City area…read more Cavolini Pizza: Fresh mozzarella, Brussels sprouts, shaved onions, anchovies, parmigiano, and garnished with half a lemon's juice. This is a niche, even unassuming, option on the menu, but the ingredients alone are intriguing and suit my taste perfectly. The pizza was baked to order and eaten fresh; the heat and smoky aroma were satisfying. The crust was thin, yet still achieved a perfect balance of crispy crust and soft, chewy interior. A thin layer of cheese provided just the right amount of creaminess; the Brussels sprouts offered a subtle yet rich flavor, while the salty umami of the marinated anchovies occasionally shined and, accompanied by a very subtle hint of brinyness - seafood lovers will appreciate it. A squeeze of lemon juice brought a refreshing twist to the pizza, making it a perfect accompaniment to seafood. However, a touch of lemon was recommended; otherwise, the acidity will overwhelm all the layers of flavor.

Around the corner and there is more seating there. I made a reservation and they honored it even though we were about 45 mins late, (oops!) but I completely appreciate them getting us in. We ordered kale salad, and garbanzo beans to start and meatballs then a margherita pizza.... everything was delicious and fresh. The quality was def there! My only complaint is the tight spaces , you're all up in each others spaces but it's not all bad. Also we ordered our kids Shirley temples and they charged us for "mocktails" meaning they were $7 each! For some sprite and a few cherrie?! Excessive! You've been warned lol. Try this place when you're in JC!

Staff is very professional and friendly, always making sure everyone is having a good time. Honestly, all the food is great here but some of my favorites are definitely the carpaccio and calamari appetizer (the calamari is the BEST I ever had, hands down) and their coffee panacota for dessert is also out of this world, just amazing! If you are a bread lover just know they make their own bread in house. 5 stars always!

For appetizers, we got zucchini chips, fried calamari and mussels. The calamari was fried too hard and it had a very salty, spicy Chilean type sauce over it. The zucchini chips were thinly sliced, lightly battered with Parmesan cheese sprinkled over them. They were decent but nothing to write home about. In fact, after having about six or seven of the zucchini chips I began to experience heartburn from the grease. For entrees, my husband had the chicken parm. He said it was too thick and should have been flattened more before frying. It was also very breaded. My brother-in-law ordered the chicken and waffles and he said the chicken tasted day old so after having a bite of one piece of the chicken he pushed the chicken aside and called it a day. I called the waiter over and informed him about the chicken tasting day old. He didn't try to change it out or take it off the bill or get a manager. He just apologized by saying I'm sorry. My crab Mac and Cheese was decent. It wasn't seasoned the way I would have liked but the huge, plentiful chunks of crab made up for that. I ate a third of my dish and packed the rest for home where I will doctor it up to my taste. I've never been to this particular restaurant before. The only reason we came today is because my brother-in-law was here on business and staying at a hotel in the area.

Perfectly cooked pasta. "Everything is homemade," Angelo explained later. Smart and fairly well-priced wine list. Honestly this would have paired perfectly with the toast but it was brought out after the toast was finished. We ordered two pastas: the rigatoni and the malfadine. Both were great and cooked perfectly. The quality of ingredients were a standout in both of the dishes. Pork pampanella was the most tender pork I've ever had. Basically melted in your mouth. This was creamy, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The now classic honey ricotta toast never disappoints ($14). They currently have my favorite, the Malfaldine with speck, grana padano, and black pepper ($22) - Get this. They no longer have the baccala and potato skin with chive ravioli. This was a fun play on potato skins. Some of the pasta had the baccala while others had the potato mascarpone. Although entertaining, it was less memorable than the other dishes. The smoked paprika pork shoulder was a dish that could feed 4. It's a massive cut of meat. While I did enjoy this, I needed more of polenta or a sauce. As anticipated it was very meat forward ;) For dessert I highly recommend their classic olive oil cake. This was moist and had a small Tablespoon of a guava sauce. For $10 don't miss this. The salted chocolate cake was a bit dry, but satisfied the sweet tooth. This went well with a double espresso. We stayed until closing and in fact were seated 15 mins past closing. Our waiter was kind and charming. He gave us his recommendations. Despite the menu being small and rotational, it always feels like there is something new and exciting to try. The Rutabaga and leek was that for me this time. I assume this is a winter dish. I recommend trying this before they move to a Soring menu and I wouldn't miss it!
