Helena's Café
Mark M.

Torrance Food Crawl #276 Helena's Café is located on the second floor of the West Tower at Torrance Memorial Hospital (TMH). It serves the west side of the campus while Yang Cafe in the Main Building serves more of the east campus. The hours here are more limited than Yang Cafe and it's only open from 7:00am to 2:00pm Monday to Friday. Today I got here just a few minutes before closing, the doors were closed before I was seated, so I probably didn't have the best choice of all possible items. I tried their entree dish for the day, The Mediterranean Tortellini, along with the sautéed Spinach, and a slice of Garlic Bread. The tortellini contained cheese and included bits of tomatoes, artichokes, olives, onions, mushrooms, and oregano. Even though it had obviously been sitting there for a while it was decent, though it would have been nicer had it been warmer. There was an ample portion of spinach provided and it was quite good. The garlic bread had been sitting there too long and was closer in consistency to crunchy bread than a soft bread, a disappointment. The food here, like most food in hospitals, is clearly nutritious. There is a nice choice of different items to choose from. There is lots of seating and the place is very clean.

Simple but satisfying grilled cheese.

Are you in search of a breakfast burrito in the south bay? Well look no further! Here is Phanny's…read morefor ya. Located on the corner of PCH and avenue C, Phanny's has been a staple in the breakfast burrito game. I have been coming here years ago, but have not been in a min. Welp, I had an urge to get a breakfast burrito and Phanny's is the first place that will come to mind. I ended up ordering a bacon, sausage egg breakfast burrito with diced jalapeños. PHEWWWW. Wow Phanny. You did it again girl. WOW. 5 big booms all AROUND. There is no salsa needed. The flavor from the meat is enough. The perfect amount of saltiness, the perfect tortilla, the right amount of meat to egg ratio. This burrito did it for me. The added jalapeños add that extra spice and crunch. I love crunchy texture so the jalapeños def hit that need for me personally, and plus its a nice kick to it if you like spicy! Just do yourself a favor and try Phanny's out. Service was swift and kind. They are fully takeout only. I am unsure if this was a conversion after COVID or not, but it's a little sad to see you are not able to enjoy their breakfast burritos fresh and hot there. I believe there is only 1 outside bench seating off Avenue C. They do take apple pay, which I feel like they did not in the past. so no cash needed! There is a parking lot being the business off avenue C which is nice so you do not need to park on PCH or in the neighborhood to try to get to this business. I will def be coming back to Phanny's soon. Unfortunately no pictures because I scarfed it down. its one of those, love at first bite. it was our honeymoon night and I devoured the burrito. no crumbs left behind. no ketchup or salsa required.

Came back here to try few other options and here are some additional notes:…read more * The coffee menu is hidden and posted on the right side of the wall inside the cashier counter window & separate from the breakfast burrito menu. * On weekends, the pickup counter is located behind the building in the parking lot rather than at the front window facing the street like on weekdays. * Free salsa, but customers need to ask the staff for it when picking up their order. * The drip coffee was surprisingly good & just as good as drip coffee from other third-wave coffee shops. * 2 Meat Combination burrito (bacon and sausage $13.75): It was not as good as the carne asada burrito. The sausage was slightly too salty for my taste. * Carne asada burrito ($14.75): This is definitely the one to get - amazing carne asada and a soft wrap. The price-to-portion ratio is a bit too high to come here regularly, but it is still a solid staple for anyone looking for an above-average breakfast burrito in the South Bay.

It came with a cilantro sauce as well as some pickled red onion. I also tried the turon pancakes which had slices of jackfruit on top to give it an extra Asian flair. There is seating indoors and outdoors. I had the thin mint iced latte which was good and not too sweet. There were lots of flavor options for lattes. They had a kids menu as well and lots of side options. There were lots of Korean-inspired dishes as well like Kim chi fried rice. There was an entire menu just for different breakfast burritos. The turon pancakes really tasted like the real caramelized turon. It had a nice sticky syrup on top that wasn't too sweet. The pancakes came super hot and were fluffy. The portion size was great. The cilantro sauce on the burrito was delicious. The pickled veggies added nice acidity that I appreciated. The bad: I don't know if there was any parking other than street parking. We parked right out front which was 1 hour parking and to the side is 20 minute parking. The interesting: You order and pay at the counter and the food gets brought out to you. I saw they had fresh cookies baked as well. Inside, there were festive balloons. I am not sure if it's always there or if they were from a special event. I've tried their catering company too and it was great! I really love how both the cafe and catering company use fresh flowers on their food to elevate their presentation.

We still live in the South Bay area but haven't been back here for many years. We decided to pay them a visit and see what's changed. Obviously the prices has changed. Since over 20 years ago, the menu looks a bit different as well. We ordered the cob salad and veggie burger. The salad portion was plenty but the burger could've been better. The price was a bit expensive for the quality and type of food. It was plain salad and the burger was also plain, no flavor or seasoning. Overall the service was decent. The gentleman who served us came back a decent amount of times and helped get us everything we needed. We ordered, ate, and also got a dessert on the way out. Their mini strawberry pie was okay. I would probably go back, hopefully the business remains open.

It's a place that holds a lot of nostalgic memories for us, so it was sad to see it like this. My wife ordered the soup and salad. The salad was fine, but the broccoli cheddar soup was completely inedible -- it was loaded with pepper to the point where she couldn't eat more than a bite. It honestly tasted like someone dumped an entire container of pepper into it. When we mentioned it to our server, instead of acknowledging the issue, he told us that "everyone has been loving the soup today." That came across as dismissive, especially considering she didn't eat it at all. I ordered the meatloaf dinner, which came out cold and extremely salty -- also not good. I still ate it, but it definitely wasn't enjoyable. The server offered to bring a different soup, but didn't offer to remove it from the bill, even though it wasn't eaten. Between the poor food quality and how the issue was handled, this was a pretty bad experience overall -- and honestly disappointing given how much we've enjoyed this place over the years.

There is a small playground where your kids can play, but it can get pretty crowded. I wish they had a bigger playground structure, or even multiple because the space is so large. They have some tables, but you can also just bring a picnic blanket. There isn't much shade unfortunately so bring an umbrella because it can get sunny! They do have plenty of tables inside too that overlook the turf area. We ordered our food ahead of time via online order, which was definitely the way to go. There was some kind of large event going on at the same time so it was really crowded and can definitely add to the wait time. It was pretty confusing when I just wanted to go back in and order a drink. The street corn pizza was delicious and loved the crust. They also have a small arcade inside if you need to get inside for the air-conditioning. Parking isn't too bad but because of the large event, it seemed a little hectic, and the parking spots are really narrow. Overall really unique spot since you can see the planes flying just above you - but if you have infants or kids that don't like loud sounds, you may want to avoid it.

I actually have the Yelp Maverick check in badge which means I have checked into places with subpar average ratings in the past. The Marie Callender's in Torrance has since closed for good a while back so it's just Pedro and Gardena left in the South Bay. You order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. The hubby and I had brunch here. The dining area only consists of 10 table and chairs. There is no AC and they have a fan blowing. Our brunches were mediocre. Hubby's meatloaf, mash/gravy, and veggies needed a lot of oomph. Seasoning for sure. My breakfast croissant was on fast food level. Tater tots were A-OK. Finally, for dessert my banana cream pie looked so sad. Not the Marie's of yesteryear. It was meh and needed more love. The service was actually fine. There are some nice people working here. Anyway, I would score them a 2.5 but round down to 2 stars.

If you are dining in, they will give you a flag, You select a seat, and they will bring your order to you. I have no complaints about the service. I had not had a turkey pot pie in years. I ordered one, for the sake of nostalgia. I was disappointed. The crust was very nice--but it was practically all gravy inside. I can see them being stingy with the turkey; but they skimped on vegetables, too. I am sure that the pot pies are assembled off site and heated at the restaurant. I am unsure if this is a indication that this menu item offers very little value, or if there is a quality control problem at the co-packer. The low score awarded reflects the poor value I received on this menu item.
