The receptionists are horrible...very rude and even did not try to provide prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses until I asked and they couldn't send via email and even then just gave me my glasses prescription and then I had to ask for my contact prescription. Also, the frame selection wasn't to my taste so I went to another eyes doctor and I found that they put in through my insurance that I was looking for frames. I had to call them and have them remove and they were STILL rude. Strangely enough, Dr. Nguyen was AMAZING! Super friendly, thorough exam, and very kind! I have been going to this office since I moved to Brooklyn Heights 11 years ago. The doctors are always professional and accommodating. I have also always had good experiences with the optical staff helping to fit glasses. I do find the receptionist staff can be unfriendly and sometimes impatient, but I find this quality in so many reception staffs throughout NYC that I can't hold it against any one office. I recently had my yearly exam in order to reorder my contact lenses. I saw a new doctor, Dr. Patel. She was very friendly. The exam took nearly no time at all (a bonus to me -- and I know she did a full exam, so it's not that she was skimping or rushing). I was very happy with my experience there. read more

I came in to get a contact lens exam and training after consulting a few other places. I have astigmatism and this was the only place that didn't charge extra for an exam with astigmatism, which my insurance barely covers. Speaking of insurance, they accept Eye Med, which isn't listed under their Zocdoc account. Dr. Patel was friendly and informative. She addressed all my questions and concerns. The assistant who trained me was also great. My training took about an hour and she never lost patience with me. I wasn't having any fun poking my eyes for an hour, but the trainer made it a better experience. read more

I've been going to Heights Vision Center for a few years and every time I go in I am not disappointed. Finding a good eye doctor can be HARD and I'm so happy I found one. The staff is nice and Dr. Friedman is friendly and really explains everything to you. They have a great selection of frames and I've already purchased 2 pairs from them. Only reason I give 4 stars is because of their hours. Closing most days at 6:00pm can make it difficult to get there after work. Other than that, I don't have anything bad to say about them. I am a patient of the practice and today had to run there because of pain in my right eye (I am severly myopic and wear contacts). My eye was heavily tearing when I approached the doctor on staff (it was someone other than Dr. Friedman). She directed me to the front desk, who pulled up my file. The admin instructed me to give her my medical insurance card, which i didn't have because i was there in a rush. I thought they would have all this information since I had already had an appointment with Dr. Friedman, but they didn't. I asked if she can call Cigna while the doctor took a look at me and she said it's not her job. The doctor was sitting next to me, listening to the exchange, not looking up the entire time. Since it was clear she wasn't going to be helpful, and the front desk receptionist wasn't going to do anything for me, I left. On my way home, as I was thinking of how much pain i was in, i was struggling to understand their attitude. I called back to let them know i would be leaving this review. I got yelled at. Screamed at, talked down to, by Carlene, who wouldn't shut her mouth to let me say a word in edgewise. She was still talking when she slammed the phone on me. I can't believe what i just experienced. I have spent a lot of money in that shop and am severely disappointed - in the attending physician, and the complete lack of professionalism by the very first person you see when you open the door: Carlene.I understand you don't like hearing the news of an upcoming Yelp review, but to be verbally abusive to a customer is beyond belief. read more

First optometrist I tried here in NYC. The doctor was nice and straight to the point. Not a ton of chit chat but not off putting. Was able to book a reservation on zocdoc and didn't have to wait when we arrived. The staff however left something to be desired. The lady who checked us in wasn't mean but didn't seem too interested in customer service. The person who was helping my wife try on glasses seemed annoyed every time she had to get a pair out to try on. Seemed like a hassle to do their job. No one was mean but, not really a willingness to help. Advertises some higher end brands but, selection was lacking in my opinion. Seemed slanted towards women's glasses. A ton of frames so probably not an issue for the average glasses shopper. read more

Luckily I only came here for a quick eye exam and Dr. Friedman was OK enough but even his speeding along cold treatment didn't leave a positive impression. Central location, lots of people come through here, hence don't expect to receive a warm welcome. I got my eye exam and that was that. But, I will not return. I was seen exactly at the time of my appointment and Ms. Dr. Komel Patel was the sweetest and smartest eye Doctor I've ever had. I normally hate going to the eye doctor due to my vision being so very bad but she took all that feeling away and made it a very nice visit. The worst and will never go there again. The guy behind the counter tries to be funny, instead of just doing his job, which he doesn't do very well! Went there to replace my frames because they broke. He tells me they are not covered, but he knows the guy that he can call and see what he can do about getting them fixed, but I will still have to come out of pocket and would have to do WITHOUT the glasses for about 5-7 days. Wasn't worth the headache and ended up buying another pair of frames. this place is a ripoff. Initially when I went there, they tried to sell me the MOST EXPENSIVE frames in the display. MY GLASSES SURVIVED AN ONSTAGE STAMPEDE! I know I should've been wearing contacts but without health coverage, I couldn't afford them nor a replacement pair of glasses. I walked in sheepishly hoping I wouldn't have to explain what happened to them & for a moment I thought they couldn't be saved. Prayers later, the warm technician/optician handed me my glasses intact & good as new, complete with new nose pads, all FREE of charge. Of course, he had to ask & I had to confess. As I walked out, I realized what really made all the difference: the mercy & grace of God along with some sturdy metal frames & lenses. Even my plastic frames never required adjusting until 2 years later when it was time to replace them. The African American guy at the counter always managed to pick frames that favored my face. I ended up here 3 years ago because my previous optical servicer tried the ole switcheroo with my union insurance policy. It hurt to leave them since I had been a patron as a teen covered under my mother's policy, but the staff turnover & dwindling customer service cemented my decision. Steps later, I found HVC & have gotten the most compliments on my 2 pairs of glasses from here than all the other frames I selected from their competitor in prior decades combined. read more

I have to agree with Cydney T. and other reviewers who experienced poor customer service. When I walked in, there were 5 sales people on the floor, two of whom were obviously chatting with each other socially. Not one of them acknowledged me or made eye contact and finally after several minutes of waiting I had to break in on the conversation between the two young women at the desk, who seemed pretty annoyed that I was bothering them. After filling in my card and sitting down, I waited 15 minutes only to have Dr. Friedman call in the person sitting next to me. I asked the woman behind the desk why I was being made to wait and she said in an accusatory tone, you came in 5 minutes late. I said that's true and I'm sorry, but #1, no one acknowledged me when I walked in, which made me even later, and #2, the person who just went in was sitting here when I arrived, which means the doctor is the one running late. She just sort of shrugged and didn't have an answer for that. I decided then to just walk out because I'd be waiting another 1/2 hour at least, and I was fed up with the attitude, and I said so. As I was walking out a more senior employee named Susan followed me out the door and convinced me to stay. She apologized for the poor service and said that Dr. Friedman is a really great doctor. I appreciated her making the effort so decided to stay, and she took care of some preliminaries for me like the glaucoma test so I didn't have to wait as long. Dr. F was fine and he seems to know what he's doing, but I really can't recommend his practice because his staff (except for Susan) are unpleasant and unhelpful and just plain rude. I bought glasses for myself and my wife from this place several times before I switched to another optician. So, my experience is not a one time incident. The sale staff are surprisingly rude and disrespectful, as if you owe them or you are wasting their time!! Really disappointing. They show up late to open the store and close early - really helpful to those of us who have tight timetables. I recently had to change from my Upper East Side optometrist to Downtown Brooklyn--and boy, do I notice the difference! Customer service is seriously lacking. Every time I walk in, I feel like I'm interrupting the staff's personal time--quite a change over the perky, attentive, high-energy atmosphere I'm used to from Park Ave! Especially the male receptionist is practically impossible to understand on the phone and rather slow on the uptake in person. Dr. Friedman seems knowledgeable, but really isn't much of a people person either. Very reserved and relying on the patient to keep the discussion going. I don't know why I've continued to come here for the past 2 years, I guess I like a feeling of having a security blanket with Doctors. The customer service has gotten really poor since I started going here, and it wasn't faulous to start with. The last time I was there, I walked in to the front desk and neither woman addressed me. I was supposed to be seeing the Doctor, and instead I saw an assistant of the Doctors. Most recently, I had a visit where I updated my contact information because I had moved. My contact order came in and I wanted them to send it to my apartment. Two weeks pass and no contacts. They sent them to the address I had over 2 years ago. When I specifically gave them my new address. And I got charged! So now I have to wait another week to get them. Overall just bad service. The Doctor is friendly, that's about it. I've been wearing glasses for more than ten years and this is hands down the best experience I've ever had. At other places, I'd been used to waiting upwards of an hour past my appointment time, but here, I was seen right away and was out the door in less than half an hour. This was exactly what I needed: convenient and fast. The only downside is the hours: they aren't open past six during the week, and they aren't open at all on Sundays. I've been a customer for about 10 years and I don't plan on going anywhere else for my specs! Dr. Friedman knows his stuff, always checks my eyes and eases my concerns about my vision. I don't feel pressured to get laser surgery, which makes me feel comfortable about picking the lastest in eye wear. Matthew always helps me to pick out frames that suit my face and my taste. I think the girl's behind the desk could be a little more friendlier, talk less (especially about their personal business) and smile more...but, they still get the job done.
