I have been seeing Amy for over 20 years (where I got my first pair of glasses), and have received the best care and prescription every time. I recently had a lapse in judgement and had my annual exam closer to my house....a decision I will regret forever. Worth every minute of the short commute, don't know what I was thinking. After receiving an incorrect prescription at a Pearle Vision (that they would not correct), Amy corrected the prescription and made me feel confident in my vision once again, without making me feel guilty. Dr Amy and Dr Burmy saved my eye. I had a very bad corneal ulcer and they were both looking after me making sure that antibiotics and steroids are working. Dr Amy even called me on Sunday to check how I am doing. My eye is 100% healed now but I will stick with then for my routine eye checks and contact lenses follow ups. read more

My daughter and I had a very good experience here with Dr. Poran. It was my daughter's first time needing glasses, and what could have been a nerve-wracking experience was instead seamless and pleasant. Dr. Poran helped us pick out a great set of frames, made them as affordable as any pair of glasses I've ever seen, and was generally very easy to work with--and most important, sensitive to my daughter and her needs. I paid $900 for a pair of glasses and a 15 minute eye exam that didn't include anything other than sight exam. I have received a more thorough evaluation from LensCrafters for a quarter the price. I had a slight vision issue with long distance and when I asked about surgery she said it wasn't enough for a doctor to take me seriously. She then proceeded to try to sell me glasses for it. I chose to only buy reading glasses and walked out $900 poorer anyhow. I popped in last week to have my glasses adjusted and I was treated as a hassle. When I asked to have my sunglasses adjusted (a process that took 20 seconds for my eye glasses) which I purchased somewhere else they told me it was a $10 fee. Go somewhere else unless you love wasting your money. read more

For t he last two years I have taken my daughter to Oculus 20/20 for glasses and eye exams. Amy Poran, the optometrist, was gentle and thorough with my kindergartener, who I thought would never get into a vision chair ever again after our first nightmarish visit to an ophthalmologist in the Heights. While I wish they had a better selection of children's frames, we've found good glasses that my daughter loves four or five times now. We've timed our visits to match Oculus' year end sale, when their prices are really quite good. I have recommended Oculus without hesitation to other people whose children wear glasses, and I have only ever heard wonderful things about Amy. read more

Do not, I repeat, do NOT get your glasses here! The staff and owner are super friendly, until there is a problem. In which case they are downright MEAN. And if you are spending 400$ and up, they really should have better customer service. I bought 4 pairs of glasses here over the years, and they lost me as a client. I wear glasses all the time, so when one pair wore out after 3-4 years, I re-ordered another of the same pair from Occulus. I paid for them, and they put the order in for me. Well, it turned out the company didn't make that frame any longer. But Occulus would NOT give me my money back!! They said "no returns" but I was like: I don't have anything to return!" It was absurd. I tried to talk to the staff and the owner (Amy Doran or something like that) and they were truly MEAN and NASTY. I couldn't believe it. I should have at least used amex so I could get them to file the claim for me. It makes me sad cause I liked having a place to go to. heck, I used to even carry around business cards from the place cause I got so many compliments on the glasses. Ah well. hopefully karma will be a bitch for these people. read more

If you wear glasses and need to get them adjusted do not let the high end optometrist/eyewear place on smith fool you into believing they know something. Because they don't. The girl broke my Austrian made frames in less than 5 seconds of me handing them to her and had nothing to offer for the fact that she just broke my fucking glasses in half. This place gets zero stars and I seriously considered paint bombing them for a good month. Thank god for fabulous fanny's. read more

I am so impressed with Dr Poran and her dedication to spending the time to evaluate correctly and I appreciate finally finding someone who really cares! As a photographer, my eyes are my livelihood and I wouldn't trust anyone else to continue to examine me and evaluate my prescription. I went to her this past year for a second opinion since I wasn't happy with my first set of contacts at another place and the service and evaluation exceeded my expectations, and I left seeing so much clearer and with the added suggestion and many free trials of an expensive type of contact that works for my dry eye issue, that are worth every penny. Do not waste your money or time here! These people have not a clue about customer service. They are nice to you when you are in there about to spend a ton of money on your glasses, but later trouble ensues. I paid extra money for both a glasses and contact lens exam, but they never gave me my contact lens prescription. This is a little trick I've noticed some of these sleazy optometrists employ so that you feel in some way forced to purchase from them, which is stupid considering they charge way more than online retailers. To top it off, I emailed asking for a copy of my prescription telling them I needed to order new contacts and was sent some bullshit that doesn't hold up as a prescription. Next I called and received a curt notification that they wouldn't fax the prescription until the next day; they didn't even follow through on this. A couple of days later, the company I was attempting to order the contacts through then called and asked for verification, but they didn't bother to call them back. Finally they reached them with me the phone, and they verified the prescription but hung up the phone on us. read more

Dr. Amy is great! The shop has a fairly decent selection and I have to say that I saw A LOT of really unique frames. My favorite part of the experience was that Dr. Amy was right there in the trenches, helping me find frames that fit the shape of my face, etc. She's definitely a good one. Plus she was super mellow and not at all annoyingly salesy like others in the neighborhood. She sincerely just wanted to be helpful. I really appreciated that. read more

I stopped in last weekend to inquire about a scratch in my Ray Ban sunglasses and whether it could be taken out or if I had to replace the lenses. I told the woman that I lived nearby and found their store on the Ray Ban website as an authorized dealer. In a rude tone, she told me that they didn't have a contract with Ray Ban anymore and that scratches couldn't be taken out. The whole time, the woman treated me like I was stupid and she was better than me. I'll never go into this store again. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, their poor selection and terrible customer service won't let me. First, their selection is not great, to put it mildly. They essentially carry one or two high-end designers, as far as I can tell, and that's it. Of course, larger does not necessarily mean better, but c'mon, they really don't have much here. Of course, the limited amount of frames they do have are very nice, assuming they fit your face. So after trying on several pairs that didn't work at all, I finally found one that was pretty close, though I still wasn't sure. "No, no," they ensured me, "it looks great on you, and besides, you should take a chance on something new." OK, fine, so I spent close to $500 on the frames, thinking that a nice little shop like this knows what they're doing. It arrives a week or two later, and looks awful on me. I immediately complain, and ask what they can do about it. Um... nothing. I'm stuck. No return period, no discount on future frames, no offer of anything. But that's not why I'm writing this review. The frames they gave me included a hard case, which lasted about a year before it broke and wouldn't stay closed. So I stop by my little neighborhood glasses store, and recognize the guy working there as the same one who sold my frames. I tell him what happened, and ask if they have any extra cases. Also, my girlfriend is with me, who says she needs new frames and starts looking at their stock. The clerk confirms my info on their computer, then says, "We actually sell the cases. They're five bucks." Um... what?! My girlfriend and I are shocked. We're clearly interested in becoming repeat customers, and you're going to charge me $5 for a new case when the one you gave me a year ago for my FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR glasses broke? Infuriating. Neither me nor my girlfriend will ever go back here. read more

I was extremely disappointed and angered when ordering contact lens from this place. I went in for an eye exam and was given some trial contact lens, then told to come in the following week. When ordering my contact lens, I was then charged for that 2 minute follow up which came to an additional $125 dollars. It is beyond shady to tell a customer to come in and then charge them that amount of money for a 2 minute consult. I will never come back to this place again and will never recommend them to anyone. read more

I keep returning to Oculus 20/20 for many reasons. Not only do I love the look, feel and style of the office and shop; not only do I love the wide selection of frames; most importantly, I love the way I'm treated by Dr Amy and her staff. She's thorough in her examinations, she's gentle and honest with her explanations, and I don't feel pressured or "sold to" when picking out frames. The first set of frames I bought from Oculus 20/20 were quite expensive, but I had picked out very trendy designer frames. Since then, I've gotten several pairs of frames and many boxes of contacts - all priced cheaper than the online stores. The consistency of stellar experiences is what earns this place 5 stars from me. read more

I was just looking up their phone number and felt they needed a new updated review. Let me start by saying I have been seeing Amy Poran off and on for 9 years.. and its correct, her exams are expensive but she is worth it. There have been times where I did not have insurance./ $$ to pay the $ 175 fee and I went elsewhere for my contact exam and let me tell you what a mistake it was, I wound up being talked into contacts that didn't fit my crazy eyes bc the dr did not want to deal with the amount of follow ups that went into the Standard Exam. Maybe if you have simple eyes, you do not need more than 1, but when my eyes change, I need 3 appointments. And yes, her glasses used to be expensive as they were all designer. But she too has changed and recognized that there are people that max out at $200 and now she has those types as well. and they are MUCH better quality then what you get on line or at other mall stores. Oh, and I live in Queens and take the F train there- she is that good. read more

After months of walking by this eyeglass shop on Bedford I was finally lured in by the signs on the window of 80% off liquidation. I bought a pair of sun glasses and 2 eye glass frames for a rediculous low price and proceeded to let them cut the lens. One month later still no lens, and finally when they came in they were incorrectly cut. I compared their presciption to the one I gave them and it didn't match. Do-over, I wait another month and they are still wrong. This time I decide to get a professional opinion and take the single pair of frames (that was all they gave me this time) and my optician confirms that not only are they incorrectly cut, but that they have reversed the prism and have given me the wrong magnification. On top of this the lens do not even match the frames. I return them and go for 3....at which point argument begins with the owner who bounced between his Carroll Gardens and Wililamsburg stores. It turns out they have lost the original lens and have been making up the shapes. I'm going nuts at this point as I am about to leave the country for 7 months and need my glasses. They actally convince me to pay them extra money at this point...(how they duped me into paying them extra for the delay and having screwed up the glasses and lost the original lens samples is beyond me.). Another month later I go directly to teh Carroll Gardens location and put on the glasses. The lens are so misshaped that you can see air between the lens and the frames at the corners. The owner explains to me that these are the best they can do. In fact the two sides of the single pair of glasses (who knows what happened to the other pair at this point) do not even match. Assymmetical lens, and the frames have been warped to fit the misshaped lens. I finally give up and just take the frames and lens as is. At which point they ask for more money and withhold the second pair of glasses. At the end of the day I just gave up all the money spent and have no glasses to show for it. Stay away from these professional sheisters at all costs. I almost lost my sanity. And by the way the staff are highly untrained and useless. read more

After trying several other doctors in the neighborhood, I've been an Oculus customer for several years. Dr. Poran is very thorough and helpful, and she has given me a better prescription than I have had for several years. I have been very pleased with the quality and selection of eyeglass frames as well as contact lenses. It may be a little more expensive than some other "chains" in the area but the level of service makes it worth it. They also take most insurance which is helpful (including VSP, which many others in the area do not). read more

The experience - exam and frame choice, plus free frame adjustments for both me and my husband - lived up to the classy exterior. Several years back my wife told me that she thought she was having eye problems and our eye doctor at that time wasn't taking her concerns seriously and just gave her the standard cursory exam. I said let's find another doctor then. That is when we went to see Dr. Amy Poran. She took my wife's concerns seriously and gave her a thorough exam, uncovering early onset glaucoma. Thanks to Dr. Poran we caught it quickly and are able to manage it. My wife is doing fine and we feel like we've found the perfect, professional, eye doctor for us for years to come. These guys are the bomb! I am having a hard time transitioning to wearing glasses, and even though I'm not quite "set" yet, they keep holding my hand throughout the process. The glasses are beautiful! I mean really high quality stunning choices. But the main thing is I'm struggling with my prescription, and the doctor insists we will work on it till it's right. That is a huge deal. A pair of glasses is an investment, so I worried about making the leap. But they are committed to helping me get set. As I had no others to switch it with I thought I would have to go without having vision for the next couple of days. Had a great experience with Dr. Poran today. I was having difficulty with my contact lenses and have always been wearing 2 week lenses. For some reason, the other office who I used to go to kept on offering me these lenses. They are okay but Dr. Poran offered me a new lens today ( monthly lens called Ultra). I was super shocked by the comfort level of the lens and the price point of the contact lenses. After taking my insurance, I only had to pay a few dollars. The experience during the eye exam was spot on. Very thorough and seems very knowledgeable about all states of the eye. For the other reviews on here, I find them inaccurate as the price you pay is based on the level of service I received today and would recommend coming here! read more

Dr. Poran has given my family eye exams for several years now and we are very happy with the thoroughness of her exams (for me and for my two young children) and the service we receive! She remembers me when I come in, is clear about insurance coverage specifics, is patient and never rushed, very professional. I've stopped in several times to have my glasses adjusted and they've happily adjusted the frames each time. I was also fitted for contact lenses there, and Dr. Poran diligently found the best lenses for me when it turned out my eyes seem particularly sensitive to wearing lenses. She was great with my kids during their exams. We will keep going back! I'm surprised to read the negative reviews because we've always had such good experiences. read more

I had an eye exam at the Smith Street location today and I was very happy with everything - basically, everything went quickly and smoothly. The woman working at the front desk was pleasant and efficient, and Dr. Poran was very nice and took good care of me. I didn't order any glasses - I'm getting contacts instead - so I can't comment on their selection of frames. But overall, I had a very good experience and got just what I wanted - a simple eye exam, done quickly by a friendly doctor with a nice staff member! Best of all, I was in and out in under an hour. I've been going to Dr. Amy Poran for a number of years now, and think very highly of her as an optometrist. She's very competent and thorough. The selection of eyewear is more limited than some other places, as others have noted, but I feel that Dr. Poran has a very good eye for what looks good, and have been pleased with her recommendations. The service is professional, if occasionally a bit restrained, but I don't mind that. In fact prefer it to pushy or gushy hard sell. If the eyewear suits your taste, you'll be happy with your choice and with the fit that Oculus 20/20 provides. And if there's a problem with the fit, just return and they'll fix it. You'll most certainly get a terrific eye exam. read more

I purchased prescription lenses for frames that I had already purchased because the selection is very limited and over priced. My prescription lenses were completed in a longer time than was originally quoted which was not great because I had lost my old glasses and it was a struggle to see and read. It was August and I did not blame the Oculus/Dr Poran for this inconvenience. Within a few weeks of receiving my prescription lenses there was a heavy fog on the center of both lenses. I took them back to Dr. Amy Poran who said they were defective and needed to be replaced by the lab they were made at. Because I had lived through August without being about to see and read properly, I tried to find a way that would make this inconvenience more tolerable. I took in old prescription sunglasses and asked if the the tint could be taken out in order for me to use while the defective lenses were replaced. At the time I thought that Dr Poran agreed this was the less painful resolution. I was never informed of an additional charge for the tint to be taken out, I thought is might be done in house or certainly by the same factory that created this problem for me. I took in my prescription sunglasses that I normally use for driving to have the tint removed. When leaving them off, I was not informed of an additional charge for this, I thought the service provided I would be done in house or at the same lab without additional costs to me due to this huge inconvenience, after all, Oculus 20/20 was the retailer and made a profit from my purchase. When my sunglasses were returned with very little of the tint removed, I was told there was a charge for the services that Dr Poran provided. When I explained that on principle I felt it not appropriate since I was being inconvenience due to defective lenses that needed to be replaced, I was told that Dr Poran is only the "middle man" and she should not have to incure the fee due to the lab making inferior lenses. Dr Poran blamed it on my insurance company and took no responsibility for having sold the lenses to me for a profit. I tried to discuss the matter simply on principle, it was a $20+ fee. I was told by Dr Poran that she should not work for free and she "has a family". I agree, no one should work for free, however when you have a business there are certain costs to doing business. I too have a family and while Dr Poran may consider herself the "middle man" her store/practice is who I paid at my over $600 only for lenses in addition to what my insurance pays. What I have an issue with is Oculus sold me lenses that turned out to be defective and yet Dr Poran will not take accountability. The customer should not be penalized or told that she is only the "middle man". As the customer, with my own family and who I currently cannot read to my young child before bed, I am very disappointment in the customer service provided at Oculus and Dr Amy Poran. I am the one who is now paying additional costs and being extremely inconvenienced due to this problem. It was not a great situation, but the lack of accountability from Dr. Poran made it worse. I am very disappointed. I don't recommend Oculus on Smith Street. Find a reputable place that will stand behind the product they sell. read more

I've been seeing Amy Poran for years and am always happy with my eye exams -- she has a positive, calm presence, takes her time and is thorough in checking on everything. My prescription has been shifting slightly (my sight is getting better!) and she's done a great job working with me on testing out different lens options. The frames can be a bit pricey, but they have great sales and since I only use mine for reading both pairs have lasted for several years now with the staff readjusting them as needed. They also did a great job helping me select the frames, finding styles that really suited me. I definitely recommend this place, and have to several friends over the years who have all had great experiences getting glasses here. read more

Amy Poran is fine for routine vision checks but did not do a thorough job in a specialty contact fitting nor dealing with a persistent eye infection. I don't recommend her office when there are so many others in NYC. read more
