Dr. Penshorn really takes the time to listen and lay out your options. I will definitely be coming back!

The worst customer service I've ever had from start to finish. Both receptionists are casually rude - answering people in abrupt fashion, not providing any information via email (requesting to call them), and refusing to do anything, other than bare minimum, to deal with insurance. I requested my VSP WellVision Exam results multiple times and they never responded. I have medical condition (severe astigmatism and large differences in diopters between eyes) that always has been covered by my insurance (good one from Big Tech company , not a cheap one), but they refused to even inquire about it to my insurance company. They refused to provide me a quote via email either and spent all time on the phone telling me what they cannot do. The Dr. PENSHORN is nice though and I am not sure if she aware of how rude her staff is . read more

I went to this doc in March of 2020. The optician offered digital lenses which never worked (they did refund this part). After several, several visits, glasses exchanged, contacts exchanged, we eventually reverted back to the old prescription. They were extremely unhelpful in this process- it was a total waste of time and money. read more

Just a heads up that they price match.. this wasn't mentioned while I was ordering contacts. So I basically over paid. Check 1-800-contacts before ordering. read more

Great service from all the staff. Lisa, Maribel and Michael are super helpful and welcoming! Very knowledgeable and patient with explaining vision insurance benefits. They have a fantastic selection of frames and definitely know what they are doing. Highly recommended read more

Great shop that has a wonderful selection of unique and fun high-end frames. My prescription is the best it's ever been. The Dr.'s bedside manner is a *little* chilly but I'll take competence over warmth. The staff, specifically Jessica, makes up for it with their knowledge of all the latest eyewear trends and technology and they only offer the best stuff. Jessica was more than accommodating and spent a generous amount of time helping me pick out my frames and choose the best options for my lifestyle & work needs. I would go so far as to make sure she's in when you go. Highly recommend. read more

Some of the rudest staff (receptionists and doctor) I've ever had the misfortune of interacting with. Was going to buy lenses from here due to convenience, but a final unsatisfactory customer service interaction tipped me over the edge. They even had the audacity of trying to deny their rudeness and get me to make a followup when I explicitly told them that I would rather go elsewhere. Not worth your time and energy. Edit/Response to the comment below, which makes me frustrated because it feels like gaslighting: Just wanted to say that I am giving a totally honest opinion of your customer service. I will happily answer follow up questions, as long as they are asked in a polite and reasonable manner-- which did not happen. Don't twist the story. You also chose to focus on defending one thing instead of acknowledging an overall bad experience. Please own up to your staff's behavior instead of making excuses. read more

A fantastic neighborhood (shop small) opticians shop. Great selection of frames, tasteful, with all the top designers, but without any pretentiousness. The staff is friendly and super helpful without being pushy. The quality and care of their work is absolutely first rate. In fact, I am wearing my second pair of glasses that I purchased and had made here as I write this review. read more

Throughout the years, my wife and I have had a myriad of experiences at the many different stores where we've bought our glasses. There's not a one that has equaled the quality of product and customer service that James Leonard has. Always a great selection of styles in frames and sunglasses and the customer service is just tops particularly Jessica who has a great knack for making you feel most welcome and assisting you in making the choice best suited to you and your lifestyle. The eye exams are extremely professional and personable. Shopping for something as personal as glasses isn't always easy yet the staff at James Leonard have the know how to make it so. We are already looking forward to our next visit. New York City offers a great wealth of choices. We are so glad we made our choice James Leonard read more

James Leonard Opticians - Eyewear & Opticians Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

James Leonard Opticians is my go-to place to get my glasses, optical and sun shades! I have been an extended customer of their both upper east side and Brooklyn locations for more than 10 years now. I love their always up-to-date collections and choices of the most unique, fashionable and prestige eyewear brands on the market. I love their honest opinion when I am selecting a pair. Currently, Jessica at Smith street location is my personal assistant. She knows my taste, my style and the existing collection, which is very helpful when I am in the mood to shop for a new pair to add to my favorite accessories! My glasses are my face, I wear them every day! There is noone else I would trust to help me choose and purchase a new pair of frames! read more

Super professional and friendly staff. Doctor is so nice, eloquent and very put together. I came through a referral and was really happy to do so. Eye exam was easy and fast, the doctor explained everything as she went along. When I came out to pick glasses, the girl at the front was so helpful and knowledgable. She listened to what I wanted and gave me really good suggestions. She was the one who helped me pick the glasses that I got and I am so happy with my purchase. read more

I came in for my annual eye exam with Dr. Ilyayeva and she was great! She recommended I get a specific pair for computer use as I was having eye strain and migraines. I worked with Jessica with picking frames and had a great experience. She was honest, thoughtful, and down to earth, and it was such a fun and pleasant experience when eyeglass shopping can be stressful. I ended up with a really stylish pair I wouldn't have picked on my own. Best of all, I decided to go with the blue light blocking lenses and I couldn't be happier with them! read more

I'm so happy with the service and glasses I got from James Leonard. (My last pair of progressive glasses were from Warby Parker and I was so disappointed. They were inexpensive but the quality and clarity of the lenses were just poor.) I'm so glad I splurged and went here the next time. The customer service was very helpful and the staff very patient. I brought my own prescription from my optometrist so I can't judge the exams they give but the frames and Zeiss lenses are spot on. FYI_My eyes get tired and red after being on a computer all day so I added the extra "blue" tint they offer to reduce eye strain when using a computer. It works! My eyes are less dry and don't hurt! Thanks! read more

I just had another great experience with my favorite optical shop! I have been coming to James Leonard Opticians for years and am always impressed by the quality of the service and the knowledgeable and professional staff who know me by name when I walk in the door and treat me like a valued customer. Jessica has taken care of me during my last two visits and I thank her again for her excellent advice and customer service, as well as the rest of the staff who have been wonderful and patient with my questions in the past. They always get my prescriptions and adjustments just right and are great working with a teacher and editor on a limited budget (who depends on perfect vision for a living) helping me to find the most amazing frames and lenses available that fit me perfectly. I will be back for another pair of glasses soon. Kudos! Keep it up! read more

I am a new customer, and a very happy one. From my eye exam to the top of the line lenses for my Mykita frames, the folks here have been attentive, good humored and all around pros. If you need new frames you'll find everything from your favorite classics, to high tech, to fashion forward design. Sunnies, too. My husband picked up a gorgeous pair of Thom Browne frames. And, if they don't have it in-house, they'll wrangle it for you. They worked with me to get things just right, thanks guys! read more

Came in here to find a pair of sunglasses for our son. When we asked to see some options, we were immediately told that what they had was" not cheap $100". Wow. First, $100 is cheap. Secondly, we didn't even ask for pricing. We just wanted to see options. The guy with the heavy accent literally put the Giggle website in front of us, showed us $10 pair of sunglasses on the site, and told us "that's where you should go". Then when confronted with his rudeness, he tried to back peddle and said that he wasn't being rude. I'm sorry, but sizing people up and throwing them into the arms of another retailer clearly shows that you are rude and not into customer service. I would highly recommend going elsewhere. Moscot just opened in Cobble Hill and is worth the trip. If you are into rude service, this is the place for you read more

It was fine. Good eye doctor. Got the job done. Was looking for a place that is welcoming and friendly and grateful for our business but this was not it for us. Not the warmest reception (the man). Felt judged. The lady worker seemed much kinder and down to earth than the man and the eye doctor. Eyeco set the standard for us--always the epitome of respect and kindness and warmth. Eyeco has moved to Wmsburg and we will be traveling there from now on. Another person could have a different experience here. So give them a try. ;) But not for us. read more

Great selection and fantastic service. This particular store has a fantastic variety of unique glasses to chose from. Not the same old ones everyone else stocks. The service I received from Jessica was excellent. She did all the leg work for me with the insurance, the glasses company and looked around to find the best prices. Wonderful service all around highly recommend read more

I have purchased both my regular glasses and sunglasses here, with a great experience on both occasions. The specific frames I had in mind for my regular glasses were not in stock, but they called in and ordered them while I was in the store and I had them in my hands less than a week later! Sunglasses I took home same day as purchased! I checked around with the other shops in the neighborhood, and from the info I got over the phone, this one was the most reasonably priced. There was also a pretty good coupon on the website that I took with me and was redeemed without a problem. Staff has been friendly and helpful every time I have been there (including stopping in to get my frames readjusted a few days after picking them up), and has been very good at helping me find what I want within the price range I ask for. read more

Got a nice pair of glasses here. With VSP the cost came to a reasonable cost and the lenses are of decent quality. Shaved off a star because the cust service left a bit desired and also because one of the lenses is kind of loose and prone to popping out when I wipe them. However, on 2nd visit, "not so good" (read it with a Trump voice) :) Don't come here if you're just looking to get "reasonably priced frames". Seemed they would not really want to deal with you unless you can shell out hundreds of bucks for a silly frame. C'mon. read more

James reached out to me and helped me sorted out the situation. He has been extremely helpful, listened to my requests and examined my lenses and found the root issue. The store replaced a new set of lenses and they are working great! He has extensive knowledge on this field and place customer satisfactory first. Although it was really frustrating at first, I sincerely appreciate his willingness to listen to feedback and act accordingly! read more

My fiance got me a gift certificate for James Leonard for my birthday so that I could get prescription sunglasses. I've had a lot of trouble getting Rx sunglasses because I have a really strong and difficult prescription, but James Leonard were able to fulfill my order easily, and all I needed to do was bring in a copy of my script (they also offer eye exams on site certain days of the week). I was very happy with the selection of sunglasses they offered and even had trouble deciding which ones to get. The staff were not only friendly and helpful, but exceedingly knowledgeable. A few days after I submitted my order, I called the store to check to see when they would be ready. I was told that my lenses were scheduled to arrive that afternoon, and my order was made a priority because I was going away over the weekend and wanted to wear the sunglasses. I was able to swing by on my way home from work to pick them up. Because my Rx is so difficult, the glasses were not as dark as I wanted them to be, so I took them back that same day, and they said I could take them for the weekend and just return them the next week to get them darkened, no charge. They are really flexible and accommodating. Even though the glasses took a bit longer than expected to get darkened, the shop called me to let me know the timeframe and the reason it was taking longer, which I appreciated. If you ever need sunglasses or glasses, I would highly recommend visiting James Leonard. It's worth it. read more

Great service, they went the extra mile to make sure I had my glasses before an important trip. Life savers!

Came to pick up contact lenses, and they fixed my glasses w/no charge. Follow up was great as well. Definitely recommend them!

I've been using James Leonard Opticians for all of my eyewear needs for many years and have never been disappointed. The doctor and all of the staff, including Irene, Jessica, and Sam, are attentive, helpful, and friendly. James Leonard offers a myriad of product options and styles that satisfy a variety of individual tastes. Overall, I love this company and its staff and would highly recommend it to anyone. read more

My experience was not that good. Dr Radmila Ilyayeva was not kind, condescending, seemed bored while taking to me. She should treat her patients with respect. I don't recommend James Leonard on Smith st. At least, I'd avoid Dr. Ilyayeva. read more

Got new glasses from them. They were extremely nice and professional, they worked with me to get a discount through my insurance company. I wear progressives and have a very high prescription and they helped me to get the right glasses. I knew that my old glasses which I got in my neighborhood were not doing the trick, but did not realize how bad things were till I put on my new glasses from James Leonard. Thank you so much Eugene and Leonard I could not be happier! read more

So I actually found James Leonard online, while shopping for new sunglasses for vacation. I shopped their site, bought the sunglasses and then realized they're in NYC. I called them and decided I'll pick up my order and see the place and see what else they have. Great selection of unique stylish frames. I like it because they set themselves apart in the product that they carry. Optometrist is also available, thorough and professional. I'd recommend you call ahead of time and check for availability. Ever so often they have nice stuff on sale, but generally these are luxury frames and will cost a pretty penny. I actually lucked out, bought an expensive dita pair and received a pair of Ray bans for free. Cool and friendly staff. Saved me the shipping from the online order and gave me some free rows. Will shop here again! read more

James leonard opticians has one of the best and thoughtful front counter reps in jessica. After my eye exam I was shown a wide variety of frames throughout the store. I tried on plenty of frames inside the store and asked for feedback. Whether positive or negative. I respected her honesty and we finally settled on one. After picking them up I can't tell you how many compliments I received. I highly recommend going to James Leonard if you are in Carroll gardens. You will not be disappointed read more

My go-to eyewear store in Denver enthusiastically recommended James Leonard to fill my latest prescription. My prescription has changed many times in the past year, and it's been expensive, stressful, and concerning. James and his staff went gone above and beyond (and beyond that) to accommodate me and my unusual situation--and I could not be more thankful for their time, patience, attention, and kindness. They provide the kind of dream service you hope for when spending a lot of money on something as essential as seeing. If customer service is your priority, then James Leonard is your store. Victor helped me decide on my lens (extra points for his positive, upbeat attitude). Jessica fielded all my calls, and diligently explained any detail that was unclear to me. Because I needed special attention for my situation, James himself adjusted my glasses and was as thorough as humanly possible. I cannot gush enough about this store, and I am forever appreciative for the experience they provided me. read more

I purchased a new pair of everyday glasses and prescription sunglasses. They have great quality products and styles. Customer service is fantastic. I love this little store. They worked with me to fit old frames with new lenses and then even replaced a part a few months later that had nothing to do with their own work, for free. The shop might be easy to overlook or pass over for glitzy places, but don't; they were very professional and knowledgeable. read more

Can I give zero stars? I would if I could. The staff here are incredibly unprofessional and more concerned with flirting with hipsters or up-selling customers on absurdly overpriced glasses than actually being helpful. The doctor had no clue how to even read the prescription on my current glasses. He just stood there literally scratching his head, completely confused and helpless. I ended up leaving the appointment somehow knowing less about the health of my eyes and what kinds of lenses I might need. What a waste of time. On top of that, they completely screwed up my insurance information and had the audacity to charge my provider over $300 for what turned out to be a completely inaccurate eye refraction. Do yourself a favor and go to one of the dozens of other opticians in Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill. There's no way they could be worse than this place. read more

I have been using James Leonard Options for about 10 years and I had no complaints until 2011. Ordered 3 pair of glasses. 2 with progressives lenses and one for only computer use. I thought and wasn't corrected that these had 2 parts to the lens. One for close up, reading, and the other for talking to someone across the desk, if you will. I went to an opthalmologist as I had been very ill and wanted a dr to look at my eyes to see if there was anything creepy behind my eyes. I got script, brought to Jimmy Ziskin and ordered my glasses. Total price was $2,800. I bought expensive very chic glasses. 4x Jimmy had to remake all 3 pair of glasses. In order to correct the incorrect prescription that Jimmy and his staff must have entered into the computer incorrectly he wanted more money. After he called my home with threats yelling and a basic meltdown he went to small claims court and sued me. The clerk told us to try and work it out, again Jimmy went off on me and told me how horrible I am. Demanding was the biggest issue. My husband and I did go back to small claims court on the appointed day and Jimmy never showed. I know at least 2 other people in my apt building that just by chance told a tale of Jimmy. And trust me we were talking about other things, so imagine my surprise. Truth his frames are beautiful, he can't read a script, he is scary when he thinks he has been wronged. Today is 9/11 I sill need new lens. It's really too bad. I think he is unprofessional, a bad technition and a bully. Remember for spending $2,800.00 this is how I got treated. I give him 0 stars read more

I have Davis Vision insurance and came in to ask about getting contacts under my insurance. The woman at the counter was very forceful and rude. She pushed me to get glasses instead (she said they would be a better deal - although the actual amount covered by insurance is very similar). When I told her I was sure I wanted contacts, she only read me part of the insurance plan and told me the lens I wanted probably wouldn't be fully covered and the fitting for the lens definitely wouldn't be. I checked with the insurance company, who told me that this woman was wrong and as long as I ordered the lens under the Davis Vision formulary (which did in fact carry the contacts I wanted), it would be fine. The whole trip was a very unpleasant experience and a waste of time. The staff was rude and unhelpful, and worst of all, completely wrong about the coverage I had. I would avoid this place. I went to Oculus 20/20 instead and they were much more helpful and pleasant. read more

When I need a new pair of glasses this is where I go. Jessica, Sam, and Irene always have that sophisticated look that gets me noticed as soon as I enter a room, but still looks sleak and appropriate for the office. The doctor keeps my prescription in check and the whole visit is always smooth and quite fun. Best part is that the staff really understands aesthetics and I always walk out with a pair that looks great on me that I would likely never have thought to try on. read more
