[Flatbush Location] I think these people do not know what they are doing. I came in for a routine eye exam but will not go back to them again. TLDR; I went there in person three times and still didn't get the right prescription, and twice they tried to bill me for $50 ($100 total) that I did not owe. FIRST VISIT: I paid a flat $75 fee. I have medical insurance but not optical insurance. The exam was very strange - quite fast and did not feel thorough at all. I've been getting eye exams for 35 years, and this was different than prior exams. Some parts seemed rushed or not present at all. I wore my glasses there but brought my contacts. Also, the person testing me when I had my glasses on banged some device against my lenses several times, no regard to the possibility of scratching the lens. I mentioned that I may need some light reading glasses It was my first time exploring this need (it's new). I was recommended to try some multi-focal lenses. I was advised that I need to test them in various light conditions and if they don't work then I may need to adjust. Unfortunatley, those were terrible. So I made a follow-up appt. Meanwhile, they mailed me a copay bill of $50; and the bill stated I had only paid $50 so far. In fact I had paid $75, and was told that covers the whole thing. I did not owe any copay. FOLLOW UP VISIT: I brought my bill with me to get the payment issue sorted. The front desk called someone from the back, who then told me, "oh just don't worry about it." Now imagine if I hadn't challenged this and just paid - they would have just gotten $50 out of me for no reason. I'm very sure there are people who do that. Between my first and follow-up, I found out from a friend of mine that you can wear near-sighted contacts and also have reading glasses that you wear over the contacts as needed. That seemed like a much better option to me. I came back in and asked if I can just get near sighted lenses and wear reading glasses as needed, and was told yes. But why wasn't that option presented to me in the first place? Part of their job is patient education and choice. When I was there, they did some optic testing again, which I stated I had already had done the prior week. The staff said it was like taking blood pressure when you see a doctor, they do it every time. That doesn't match any other eye experience I have had in 35 years, but I thought, well, maybe it's a new standard, whatever. However, he also did the whole series of exams before realizing that I was wearing contacts, and had me remove them, and then did it a second time. Why wouldn't he ask if I have contacts and then tell me to remove them before taking the measurements. I ended up getting the literal same prescription I had before I came in. But I know that's not right as I can't see as well. They ordered me a sample pair but I had to come pick it up. So I came by for a THIRD visit to pick them up. When I got home I realized that one of the samples was not the correct prescription. To get it right, I would have to go there a FOURTH time. I don't have endless time to keep going on errands so I just ordered the prescription they gave me. But now I regret this as I really think I need a stronger one. But I already spent my money for the year on their shoddy exam and on the lenses that are too light for me, so I'll just be a bit blind for another 9 months. After this third visit, I got a SECOND bill asking me for $50 copay for the second visit. Nope. This is a follow-up appointment. How are they charging me for this when it was a follow-up appointment? And not a medical appointment. I don't have eye insurance. I think they are probably charging my insurance plan as a medical eye exam for each appointment - even the follow-ups, hence the "blood pressure" optic tests, which is generating a copay. But they then aren't actually asking me for the copay when I complain. I was also told "not to give up" on multi-focals. Well maybe not, but I can't come back every week while you keep running my insurance. I have a job to be at. If I hadn't complained, I would have been out $100 for no reason. If I hadn't found out about how reading glasses work with near-sighted contacts from a friend, I would have just kept trying the multi-focals without a clue that there was a simple solution that worked well for me. Also, their bathroom is dank and weird. If people need to wash their hands and change out contacts, put a little table in there. I do not recommend this business and will not be back. Very disappointing as I live so close. read more

the clinician was fine but the business is poorly run. Never got a call back when requested, took forever to get a follow up appointment and when after a month-long wait my appointment was cancelled an hour before I was scheduled to go, hard to get in touch with a person and going by in person x2 during supposed opening hours the place was shuttered...and last but not least their system for appointment reminders is terrible...too frequent reminders and a broken link when trying to confirm the appointment. read more

The office staff is good but there is a constant turn over of opticians, endless waiting and the ophthalmologist is very aggressive, rude and not very good at listening. I cannot possibly recommend this establishment and hope that others will go elsewhere and not have the very negative experience that I have had. Zero stars and zero thumbs up. read more

Without a doubt, the worst place I've been to. They will gaslight you and scam you. I've gone to Downtown Eyecare twice for contacts and both times they scammed me. They made me to pay $200 upfront to order trial contacts and then they wouldn't contact me again about my contacts. Then, after weeks of trying to get in touch with them, (I tried to call the office 5-10 times a day), they tell me I needed to have made an appointment with them to try out my trial contacts that I already paid for. Like no... you should have called me to let me know. Then they ignored me for weeks after taking my money. Now I'm going there in person to figure it out, I bet they will charge me a third time for the same exact contacts thatve been sitting there that I already paid for. They love to steal money and waste your time. I care a lot about my eyes, and I want an optometrist who cares. read more

I didn't have a good experience at all. My visit was because of a recent visit to the DMV and I had to look in a small box and read the numbers to pass the eye exam at the DMV. The numbers were fuzzy around the edges so I failed the test, I was told to get an eye exam to get my license. I also told the tech I had an issue with the numbers on a digital clock had a fuzzy outline and sometimes when the light reflects off metal street signs at night it was blurry. I told the eye technician my issues and he wrote notes in a notebook. The doctor came in after a while and checked my eyes for about 5mins and told me I had a stigmatism and had it from birth. She walked me to the front after the exam with a prescription note and said lady behind the counter would help. I asked the doctor what the numbers meant on the slip she said it would help with the glare and with sharpness. I arrived today to pickup the glasses and asked to try on the glasses and look across the street at the sign. I told her I had no problem seeing the signs or the fine print on the poster on the counter. I told her what the problem is as stated above. The clerk said I never told her that and I said the doctor didn't tell me I had to tell you that. I said I thought that's what the prescription slip for was for. She said you need anti-glare glass. I said the doctor told me the prescription would help that. She then said to me, you have Medicaid you have to come out of pocket. I asked what the medicine in the glasses were for she said reading. I told her I didn't have an issue with reading fine print or anything. Then I asked if they put the notes I told the tech in my file she said yes. I told her I will try these out and bring them back if they don't work. She said again well the anti glare is not covered by Medicare. She never gave me a price sheet or anything. They essentially gave me glasses I don't need. They charged my insurance and all I needed was anti -glare glass after two minutes of telling the clerk my situation. Never gave me a price list just keep letting me know Medicare wasn't covering it and I had to come out the pocket. Dr. Nicole told me the prescription me would help after the exam, I assumed everything was on the slip. Then I get to the clerk and told it wouldn't help for my issue. I told them I would come back tomorrow. I'm highly upset. read more

Staff and providers (Drs. Dessner and Hoang) were exceptional. Like most of us, I was terrified of going in for an eyecare. However, Drs. Dessner was so thoughtful, kind, and understanding. He was very patient, which is a trait that I often don't see in healthcare providers anymore. He took time to explain my conditions and the next steps and options for treatment. When he instructed his staff to make referrals for a specialist on my behalf, he repeatedly checked to see if the referrals and appointments were all set for me. I really admired the interpersonal skills that staff and Drs. Dessner and Hoang presented consistently to their patients. While sitting in the waiting room, I was able to see first hand that my positive experiences were just one of many patients' positive experiences. Honestly, I'm really grateful that I stumbled upon Dr. Dessner's practice here in downtown Brooklyn, and his excellent bedside manner made all the difference. read more

Highly recommended. I was able to make an appointment immediately in early August, and then a couple of follow-ups later, after experiencing an emergency and some follow-up complications. The staff was very responsive and the doctors are knowledgable and communicative. I went to see Dr. Dessner and he did an amazing job, so I thought I would just go ahead and purchase my glasses there as well. Well that was the biggest mistake ever. I dropped $750.00 at their facility for 2 pairs of glasses. 1 pair was a new frame and the other was my old frame that I loved, so I figured I'd just have the new lenses put it. Big mistake. They now have yet to find them. This plc is closed every other saturday and I work till 4:30pm, so I generally have to go there on a sat that they are open. After 3 wks i finally went to pick up my new glasses only to find out that they only had 1 pair. I asked where is the other pair and the lady at the front seemed confused. So she started searching thru all of the drawers, no glasses. So she said to me oh the people that filled the script did not send the other pair. Say what now? I paid u in full for 2 pairs of glasses and only got one, they are closed next weekend, so now I have to wait till the following weekend. I am very dissatisfied with their service. I've been wearing glasses since I was 8, a very strong prescription (like can't function without my glasses). I also have an eye condition that requires fairly close monitoring. So I've been to a LOT of ophthalmologists. They are the BEST I've ever worked with. Dr. Dessner is thorough and thoughtful and all the doctors in training and the staff are professional and kind. I also bought my glasses here for the first time at the optometrist and Andrea Narine is fantastic. There have been times of a very long wait, which isn't great--so do plan ahead and be patient--but they are so good I don't mind waiting. Highly recommend. read more

First of all, the staff including Dr. Dessner are kind and helpful! Unfortunately, they overbook themselves or overestimate how many patients they can see. The waiting room is always packed. I've been here 4 times and every single time I wait over 45 minutes to be seen, sometimes longer. These are morning appointments too! It's not as if they get backed up and then late in the afternoon there is a wait. The doctor doesn't remember what's going on with my eye or why. It's as if I'm a new patient Everytime. At 2:30pm I was told there were still several people in front of me and that they didn't have any open rooms. Then why schedule a 2pm appointment? let me start by saying its been a long time since i had a nice experience at a doctor. this man is a good doctor. i went in because id been feeling sporadic, repeated eye pain after a scratch i got a year ago. dr dessner let me explain this to him without interruption or hurrying me up, when i was done he explained what he thought was happening in real detail, even taking out a model of an eye to help illustrate his thoughts it was amazing. not only did this guy care, he took the time to let me know what was happening. after the explanation he gave me a few options, always asking permission before he ran a test or dropped drops in. it all felt really good, like he was helping me help myself, rather than being thrown through an array of tests without any idea what was going on. i cant recommend him enough. read more
