The WORST experience. The unprofessional front end staff was the start. They do a lot of socializing in front of patients, eating chips at the front desk, loud and just not a professional office setting. Then one of the staff members comes out to call the patient in he is texting on his phone. Then a staff member calls me in to do the initial screening, I asked him if he had my records because I have a certain lens in my eye. He told me he doesn't think they still have my records, but he said I've only been here five months so he is not sure. Well, that doesn't make me feel great that the person who did most of my testing has only been there five months. Meanwhile, still joking around with other staff members. It was unfortunate that with my insurance which is widely usedI was told only one doctor accepted. I didn't feel like he spent any amount of time examining my eyes. He just reiterated what I told him already that I have dry eyes. Within not even 10 minutes of leaving the office I get an email that I have another appointment scheduled for a week from then. I called back, but the woman told me that office already closed which I find hard to believe because the office was packed when I left. So I'm not sure if I was reaching a switchboard somewhere else. With numerous numerous texts, reminding me of this appointment that I did not make, nor did I need I was unable to cancel this appointment, even though I had canceled many times when receiving the texts. I continued to get phone messages I tried calling the office three times on Monday morning where the woman told me just ignore it. It was canceled again to be followed up by another phone call, reminding me I had an appointment. How can I trust this office with my eyes if I can't even trust the office with basic reception duties. It's sad because Stahl Eye Center was a team that I felt confident with my eye care needs.

I immediately called his office to tell him something wasn't right, but nobody returned my calls. I called repeatedly before I *finally* reached someone. They told me to come back in. Upon doing so, Dr. Galst found an astigmatism he had missed a few weeks before, and he gave me a new prescription. So far, so good. Then I went to the front desk to check out, and they wanted to bill me, even though I had already paid at the first appointment. They argued that this second appointment was a new examination. I contended that it was a follow-up to fix an error that had been made the first time and that I should not be charged, since it was not MY error. They argued that I could've developed the astigmatism in the short period between the two appointments, but said they would see what they could do. Shortly after, I received a bill in the mail--so much for seeing what they could do--and when I called to contest it, they again argued that the second appointment was a new examination. What a crock! When I took the new prescription to the glasses place and told them the story, they were as aghast as I. They said that patients regularly need new prescriptions tweaked and that they have NEVER heard of an eye doctor charging for such an appointment. Lucky me--I'm the first. I will not be returning to Dr. Galst. Everyone sometimes misses things; that I can live with. I can also live with the inconvenience of having to go in for two appointments and with the pain of having to have my brand new glasses sent out to be corrected to match the new prescription. (Thank goodness the glasses place did NOT charge for that!) But to have to pay for two separate appointments, when the second one was to correct something that was missed at the first? C'mon. That's unfair. The cherry on the sundae? I dug up a prescription from an eye doctor from the year before and she had noted the astigmatism. So, as I suspected, it was there all along.

On the day of my LASIK surgery, they did even more tests right before the procedure. I felt so safe. They gave me cute little stress balls to squeeze right before the surgery. I was scared, but the procedure was so quick, easy, and painless. The whole process was less than a minute. After the surgery, they went over next steps and gave me a pouch with things I would need to use during the healing process. I went home and slept right after. I didn't experience any burning at all throughout the night. I barely felt any discomfort. When I woke up, I was able to see without glasses. It was a bit blurry at first, but slowly cleared up throughout the day. They asked me to stop by the following day to make sure everything was okay. During the follow-up, they gave me more next steps and days that I should visit for future follow-ups. It's nice that the price of the surgery includes my three prior visits and a bunch of follow-ups. LASIK is pretty expensive, but they have payment plans, which made it more affordable for me. My husband had LASIK at another location years ago for the same price and said that they didn't even do most of the things that Dr. Khosrof and his team did for me. I'm so grateful to have such an amazing doctor.

However, convenience wouldn't matter if the service wasn't good. Dr. Schlussel and his staff provide excellent service from the time patients walk in the door until they leave. Everyone is polite and considerate, appointment times actually mean something, and there is very little time spent waiting to be seen. The tests administered are explained thoroughly, the services and corrective lenses recommended are top notch, and the prices are quite reasonable, especially with my employer's vision coverage. Talk is cheap, of course. The best recommendation from me and my wife is that we won't go anywhere else.

SUMMARY: (1) Wasn't given the doctor I asked to see. (2) Did a lazy MACHINE test instead of the more accurate manual vision test. (3) The prescription turned out to be very off. (4) It took 7 calls over many weeks before someone who could address my concern called me back. (5) Refused to refund me the measly $150 when I requested it, but my credit card company stopped payment and I got my refund the hard way. THE STORY: I called the office to make an appointment with Dr. Spitzer because a good friend of mine recommended him to me. I made it clear that I wanted to see Dr. Spitzer. But when I showed up for the appointment and said "Hello Dr. Spitzer" when he walked in, he said, "I'm Dr. Cohen." I explained that I came to that office specifically to see Dr. Spitzer. He offered to reschedule, but at this point it was awkward and I felt bad rejecting this guy. So I said, no, it's fine. Dr. Cohen's assistant tested my vision (refraction test) using a machine. The doctor never did a manual test (you know, where they flip back and forth between different lenses and you say "one" or "two"). This bothered me. I wondered if this was the new standard. He wouldn't write me a monovision prescription when I asked for it even though all my prior ophthalmologist did so, and who, in fact, recommended it for me. So all of the above made me have doubts. I didn't want to spend money on expensive lenses with the wrong prescription. I called a few optometrists with high Yelp ratings, and ALL confirmed that they do MANUAL refraction tests, that the machine is simply used to measure a starting point. In addition, they said that of course they would write me a monovision prescription. I went to one and low-and-behold, the prescription I was given was VERY different from what Dr. Cohen prescribed (not counting the mono-vision difference). Naturally I got my new glasses with the better, manually measured prescription. I called New York Laser Eye LLP to get a refund explaining all of the above. I was told a billing person would call me back. No one did, and it took 6 more calls to finally get a call back. In the meantime, I called VISA to dispute the charges since my deadline to do so would pass otherwise. When I finally got the callback, she put me on hold to talk to Dr. Spitzer, who denied his office failed at all, and that it was standard procedure to only do a machine vision test. He refused to refund me the measly $150, even after I explained to him I paid for another eye test and used that one for my glasses. Any good high-profit business would never make a fuss over $150. $150 matters to me because I'm on a tight budget.

When we both agreed my cataracts had gotten to the point that I really couldn't see well enough to drive at night and it was time for surgery, Dr. Spitzer referred me to Dr. Raviv who explained the current options available for my type of vision. I had astigmatism as a large component of my poor vision, along with near sightedness and cataracts. I opted for the toric lens. I had the surgery at NY Eye & Ear where the staff was highly competent and the procedure went well. Using local anesthesia enables you to recover quickly without the after effects of general anesthesia like nausea and grogginess. The anesthesiologist was congenial & added a sense of humor, so important when you are on an operating table! Everyone was kind and respectful. At my follow up visit I HAD 20/20 VISION IN THE EYE THAT WAS OPERATED ON!! I will be going in for my other eye in about a week... I can see without glasses for the first time in 50 years! I will need an over the counter pair of reading glasses for close reading but am glasses free for most of my day. I am so amazed!!! Thank you, Drs. Raviv and Spitzer!

It pains me to write this review- because I understand what a bad review can do to a small…read morebusiness. But this was my experience and the truth of it. My review is not meant to deter anyone from going here, but to inform so that people can be prepared and aware. The first issue was with scheduling. I made my appointment through the website Zoc Doc. At around 11:45 AM- I chose a 1:45 PM slot for the same day. All the slots were available, so I figured this place wasn't too busy. A few minutes after making the appointment, I got a call from a very nice lady there. She asked if I could come at another time because the doctor "goes out" from 1-3 PM and he won't be there. Due to the timing of transportation and other errands I had to do- we agreed to change the appointment to 1 PM. I hustled out of my house and made it there at 12:45 PM. When I arrived- the same nice lady said "Oh good, he was just about to leave." ... I'm sorry what? He would leave when a patient is still on their way? And I made it there early! I chalked it up to making a same day appointment. However- they really need to block out what times are unavailable on the Zoc Doc website. Both the nice counter lady and doctor made comments on my eye color, asking if they were real and complimenting them. Now don't get me wrong- compliments are great- but you don't expect it from a doctor/nurse. It's like going in and being told your arms or spleen is beautiful. Although appreciated, it made me uncomfortable. Settings matter- a compliment like that in say, a makeup store- wouldn't faze me. But it did here. I wear contacts- and when I told the doctor I was a customer of Hubble- he then spent the entire exam ranting about how Hubble is bad, how they make cheap lenses, and so on and so on. I wouldn't have minded if this rant lasted a few minutes. It's his professional opinion which I respect. But the entire exam I was made to feel like I was making the worst decision of my life. The equipment used is severely outdated. The first part of the exam where you look at a hot air balloon and they blow air in your eye was standard. The second part of the exam where you read off letters has not been updated since the 90s- maybe even older. I was asked to read letters off a sheet (made of plastic or paper) on an opposite wall. Because this sheet is printed and is not digital- the letters don't change. Changing letters help me really think about what I can or can't see well. I found myself repeating what I knew was there, based on reading it the first time. In addition, the back rooms where this exam took place was not well lit- which added to my uneasy feeling. I found the exam to be quick. Good? Maybe. I'm sure he was in a rush because of the aforementioned scheduling issue. I got no information about my eyes and whether my prescription changed because he was literally still ranting about Hubble. He gave me a trial pack of contacts by Acuvue which I was very grateful for. I noticed one box was opened already with a contact missing- but I figured beggars can't be choosers- so I accepted it. After a week of using the lenses, I noticed my eyes were burning. I thought it was lack of sleep. Fixed that, still burned. So on the 6th day I finally thought to look at the expiration dates. No, the opened one was not expired- but the other box was by 2 years!! I called the store to let them know they might have more expired stock on their hands. I was told to stop using the expired contacts and to go back to them (the store) when I was ready to order. They did apologize once, but that was it. No offer of a new trial box. Nothing. Granted I had already decided to not go back there- but it didn't seem like a big deal to them. I would have given 1 star based on my experiences, but the glasses I ordered from them I love and were made really fast. I think they were ready by the next day. Old fashioned is the best words I can use to describe this place- in both mindset and equipment.
