Once you've been to one handroll place in DFW, you've been to them all. Because they all kinda taste the same. Not to say they taste bad, they don't, they just taste similar. I went to Heian for a quick lunch and got the 6 handrolls and one extra piece of nigiri. I was satisfied with the quality of the rolls. The nigiri piece was really fancy; gold flakes and all. I believe Heian, at the time of this review, is still the only handroll bar in McKinney. So they have this advantage going for them.

Nothing special about their dessert, it's what you can get anywhere else.

Situated at the front of a strip mall, it was easy to find. Unpretentious on the outside but looking in through the glass window it looked modern, clean, and organized. The center was the sushi bar and then maybe a few smaller tables against the wall on one side. Our first time here, we came on Valentines Day evening with dinner reservation, Feb 14, 2025. They had a mandatory special Valentines omakase so we didn't have to do much thinking, just go with the flow. Everything is fresh, flown from Japan. A couple of the sushi chefs are obviously tenured, they made the nigiri fast and skillfully. The chef making the handrolls was not as great, they came out loose and falling apart, even though it was still fresh and flavorful. I would say make reservations and come on a weekday that they get their fish flown in. Sit at the bar and order your favorites according to what is most fresh. The set menu actually was not the best way to highlight what they can do best. They tried too hard to make it "Valentine-y" instead of just serving great food.

Wow this place took me by surprise! It's the best handroll in the area! The prices aren't too bad and everything tasted so fresh. Our sushi chef was so nice and personable! My husband and I would definitely come back Service was amazing, they treated us so well, granted we were the only ones in there but they engaged in us so well.

Stopped in for lunch, it's not in a nice strip mall but it's amazing once you go through the door! Very nice inside and great atmosphere. It's a very elevated classic sushi with every piece being perfected one by one. Had the 3 set of hand rolls and some individual Nigiri, everything was excellent!

After multiple recommendations from a friend, we stopped by on a Sunday night and were the only ones in the restaurant . The place itself is intimate as most seats are around the sushi bar, though there are a few tables. I love the decor as well. Everything about Heian was an amazing experience . The fish quality was amazing . Our main sushi chef, Cho, was very sweet and welcoming. We had the Spicy edamame, Muki Hotate ( absolutely delicious ) , Tuna Trio, Red Crab Handroll and Hamachi Handroll,, Osaka roll, Hiroshima, and a few other things that I can't remember off the top of my head. They also served us some dishes on the house . Everything was amazing and we will definitely be back. A gem in McKinney if you enjoy top quality sashimi, nigiri, and quality fish .

Heian specializes in handrolls and selections of daily special fish. If you want an authentic sushi dining experience in an intimate space, I do recommend it here. They do not do omakase, but they have a set course that includes a few appetizers, handrolls, and chef's choice nigiris. I ordered 5 sets of handrolls with a couple of nigiris and that was a perfect amount. FYI If you are a sushi connoisseur, their rice is on the little more seasoned side. Few of the stand outs: (4/5) Salmon Handroll First of all they stuff it with loads of salmon the meat is almost coming out of the roll. The nori was crispy and complimented so well with buttery salmon. (5/5) Uni Nigiri They really loaded up the nigiri with at least four pieces of fresh uni, or sea urchin eggs. It tasted fresh and not fishy, and I thought it was great for the value. (4.5/5) Crab Handroll Also stuffed full, these finely shredded real crabs are tasty. Just slightly salty with umami. Would definitely order this one again. (4.5/5) Chutoro Nigiri I mean it's chutoro, you can't ever go wrong with buttery delicate piece of medium fatty tuna. It melts in the mouth just the right amount while still having a slight chew. (4/5) Tuna Cheeks Btw the service was excellent here, and our sushi chef was generous to give us little pieces of tuna cheeks on the house. I have never had cheeks of tuna before, and they were delicious while having good kind of chew. (5/5) Yuzu Ice Cream An absolute must order. This flavor of icecream may be seasonal, so be sure to ask them if they have it. Yuzu is a type of Japanese citrus that has very bright lemony but distinct taste. This ice cream was so refreshing with the perfect amount of zest that I'm still dreaming about it to this day.

This is THE place in McKinney for sushi. When you pull up, you don't expect it to be such a beautiful restaurant inside, but it is. The staff is so knowledgeable about the menu and gave us great recommendations about what to get. We didn't eat all day, so we could try almost everything. The sashimi is some of the best I've ever had- especially the yellowtail! It's my favorite sushi place for any occasion or celebration.

Incredible meal-- this is high end sushi at very reasonable prices. I got the course A fixed menu-- the nigiri, hand rolls, appetizers were all melt in your mouth delicious. The service was impeccable.

The food was delicious. I ordered the 5 set with another salmon roll as my extra choice. Overall, the experience was good, but it did take a while to get menus and actually get served with a reservation. Once we ordered the handrolls were coming at a steady pace, and overall were delicious. Although the wait was long, the food was worth the wait.

Yum!! Quality was good and service is friendly. It's pretty casual but a good date spot too. They have daily and lunch specials, but I still think the menu items are reasonably priced! I recommend and will be back!

Ok I'm a fan again. I never really stopped coming here; just didn't come as often. They have new chefs I've come to know now and the feeling I once had for this place is back. There are now lunch special options. They still have the same quality of fish; more cold dishes to choose from and I'm sure happy. Lately my favorites have been Suzuki, Hirame, Salmon and Madai. Definitely still ranks the best sushi in McKinney with quality.

Ok I guess I am gonna be a negative one on this one, and I hate to be the one to be so negative -…read morebut got to be honest with what we experienced. First thing first if a restaurant mentions on their door and their website/Google maps that they are open till 11:30 PM - i totally imagine that they will be open till at least near that time. We were late, but life and baby does not work on a timetable, but knowing that we can still go out and celebrate was important. We reached the restaurant at 10:22 PM and were immediately told last call in 8 minutes. Weird, which restaurant does last call an hour before. Next we were absolutely rushed throughout the dinner. Again, we understand us being late and if the staff needed to leave early, just let us know to come back again and we would have been more than happy to go somewhere else, rather than plate full of food being tried to be cleaned up. Just change the restaurant timing if you cannot abide by your own time, we would not have chosen it as such! Sounds pretty bad to complain about the time when we came in at 10:22 but we came in then BECAUSE their times mentioned they were open for an hour more which any reasonable person would say is enough! Food was extremely mid - having eaten at many MANY sushi restaurants now, and knowing what we get for what we pay for, maybe it was because the staff wanted us gone The Bluefin Tuna sashimi was great, Yellowtail was very mid (like felt "slimy"which is a weird feeling to have when eating sushi lol), my wife obsesses over Salmon and this time she was being very generous to me with her pieces lol. The double pleasure roll was pretty good, but came too late to the story. Ambience is great. Staff was decent, except our server who was hovering hard. I totally understand you want us out of there, but just dont sit anyone if that is the case - dropping 100+ dollars to have that experience does not feel right. I will stop, I always read these reviews and imagine a crumudgeon somewhere angry and writing this, but this is just a warning to anyone who was gonna take a late night dinner option here!

All good there but when my daughter ordered the crème brûlée it came out with lemon ice and lemon topping, she doesn't like lemon. We asked to get the crème brûlée without the lemon on it and the manager said we would need to buy another. I was surprised as we had purchased an appetizer, 4 rolls and a dessert. And had we known that the dessert would have lemon on it we would have declined that combo. Sashimi was tasty, roll options are mostly boring basics. If you want a healthy fresh "fish forward" roll they don't really have it. Tons of fried or cream cheese with crab stick options. That's not really sushi. Edamame was good.

The portions were extremely generous as they also included salad, miso soup, tempura with veggies, and a double order of california rolls. Thats definitely a Texan sized meal. The staff was genuinely friendly and attentive, which immediately set a positive tone for the experience. The menu offered a great variety with plenty of options, and I really appreciated that items were clearly marked to indicate whether they contained raw fish. That's a thoughtful touch that makes the menu more approachable for guests who may be new to sushi or prefer cooked options. Presentation-wise, the rolls looked fantastic and were plated beautifully. The flavors were good as well. However, the one thing that held the experience back for me was the portion size of the rolls. Some of them were extremely large--my Rock & Roll was so big that fitting a single piece comfortably in my mouth was a challenge. Sushi is traditionally meant to be eaten in one bite to enjoy the balance of rice, fish, and fillings. When the pieces get too large, it can throw off that balance and make the eating experience a bit messy. I also found the eel sauce to be unusually thick--almost molasses-like--which didn't quite have the smooth, glossy texture I typically enjoy. Overall, it's still a solid spot worth trying, especially if you enjoy larger rolls and generous portions. For me personally, the size of the rolls disrupted the balance I look for in sushi, so it may not become my regular spot--but others may really enjoy it.
