Once you've been to one handroll place in DFW, you've been to them all. Because they all kinda taste the same. Not to say they taste bad, they don't, they just taste similar. I went to Heian for a quick lunch and got the 6 handrolls and one extra piece of nigiri. I was satisfied with the quality of the rolls. The nigiri piece was really fancy; gold flakes and all. I believe Heian, at the time of this review, is still the only handroll bar in McKinney. So they have this advantage going for them. read more

Situated at the front of a strip mall, it was easy to find. Unpretentious on the outside but looking in through the glass window it looked modern, clean, and organized. The center was the sushi bar and then maybe a few smaller tables against the wall on one side. Our first time here, we came on Valentines Day evening with dinner reservation, Feb 14, 2025. They had a mandatory special Valentines omakase so we didn't have to do much thinking, just go with the flow. Everything is fresh, flown from Japan. A couple of the sushi chefs are obviously tenured, they made the nigiri fast and skillfully. The chef making the handrolls was not as great, they came out loose and falling apart, even though it was still fresh and flavorful. I would say make reservations and come on a weekday that they get their fish flown in. Sit at the bar and order your favorites according to what is most fresh. The set menu actually was not the best way to highlight what they can do best. They tried too hard to make it "Valentine-y" instead of just serving great food. read more

Stopped in for lunch, it's not in a nice strip mall but it's amazing once you go through the door! Very nice inside and great atmosphere. They do not do omakase, but they have a set course that includes a few appetizers, handrolls, and chef's choice nigiris. I ordered 5 sets of handrolls with a couple of nigiris and that was a perfect amount. FYI If you are a sushi connoisseur, their rice is on the little more seasoned side. Few of the stand outs: (4/5) Salmon Handroll First of all they stuff it with loads of salmon the meat is almost coming out of the roll. The nori was crispy and complimented so well with buttery salmon. (5/5) Uni Nigiri They really loaded up the nigiri with at least four pieces of fresh uni, or sea urchin eggs. It tasted fresh and not fishy, and I thought it was great for the value. (4.5/5) Crab Handroll Also stuffed full, these finely shredded real crabs are tasty. Just slightly salty with umami. Would definitely order this one again. (4.5/5) Chutoro Nigiri I mean it's chutoro, you can't ever go wrong with buttery delicate piece of medium fatty tuna. It melts in the mouth just the right amount while still having a slight chew. (4/5) Tuna Cheeks Btw the service was excellent here, and our sushi chef was generous to give us little pieces of tuna cheeks on the house. I have never had cheeks of tuna before, and they were delicious while having good kind of chew. (5/5) Yuzu Ice Cream An absolute must order. This flavor of icecream may be seasonal, so be sure to ask them if they have it. Yuzu is a type of Japanese citrus that has very bright lemony but distinct taste. I've been in this strip mall a handful of times and never noticed Heian, but when we had a Girls Night planned for the Escape Room across the street, Yelp directed us to Heian for a pre-game dinner. I am so glad! The service was top notch and the sushi (and more) was delicious! Usually sitting at the counter where the sushi is rolled is too loud, but this evening it was quiet so we treated ourselves to a front row seat. Funnily enough my friend and I ordered the same thing - Spicy Tuna Handroll and the Kawaii Shrimp. The Kawaii Shrimp reminded me of boom boom shrimp, the sauce was delicious I ended up dipping my Brussel Sprouts into it later on. I'm not usually a fan of handrolls, I'd rather take my time with individual slices, but that wasn't an option so I went with it. The Spicy Tuna was incredible. The spice was spot on, the filling was plentiful and there was more tuna than rice. Well worth the $6. I was still hungry but didn't want another hand roll or sashimi so I decided on the Brussel Sprouts. The eel sauce and seeds were just right and the portion was decent for $6. I am a California transplant so I miss Sugarfish deeply. I was planning to drive to Nobu Dallas today but was surprised to see Heian up the street from me and decided to try them out since they are much closer. I am so glad that I did! The food is delicious and fresh, and well portioned. My favorite item on the menu was the Hirame Carpaccio. It was so satisfying and tasty. The dish is giving Nobu's Whitefish Sashimi a run for its money, and half the price. I also had the Yellowtail, Salmon, and Spicy Tuna Handrolls. All 3 were pretty good, but the spicy tuna was my least favorite. I tend to like my spicy tuna with a little more mayo, which this did not have. The yellowtail Handroll was my favorite here. Finally, I HIGHLY recommend the Kawaii Shrimp. If you're a fan of Boom Boom Shrimp (or some places call it Rock Shrimp), you'll like Kawaii Shrimp because it's very similar. Lovely restaurant with a traditional Japanese setup where everyone is seated around the chefs as they prepare your meal. My friend and I tried their omakase. They give you miso soup, an appetizer, sashimi, nigiri, two handrolls of your choice and dessert. The food is excellent and the chef explains the elements of each dish they hand to you. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. If you're not willing to pay for the omakase, they offer plenty of handrolls and other options where you can mix and match different types of sushi. My husband and I were super excited that a new handroll place was opening up 15 minutes away from our house; I've already been twice, once with him on his birthday and once with a friend last night. The sushi bar seating is very cool because you get to see the chefs hard at work preparing your food; I'm not the biggest fan of the lack of lumbar support for the bar stools, but that's just a minor concern. Also note that if you get seated on one of the side tables (not at the bar), all handrolls will be cut into maki for you. When my husband and I came last week, we sat at the bar and ordered completely a la carte. In order, we tried: the chicken karaage, the takoyaki, the kushiage set, two types of sashimi (kanpachi and hotate), four types of nigiri (kasugodai, mahata, ishidai, and kamasu), and the red crab handroll as well as the ikura handroll. They didn't have the geso karaage or the yuzu ice cream, but I ended up trying the geso karaage the second time around, along with their signature nigiri omakase ($50) and the unagi and kaisen creamy hand rolls. First thing's first: the fish was super fresh and delicious, and the sushi rice here is excellent. Love the level of tanginess from the vinegar as well as the flavor profile overall; no need to dunk anything into soy sauce as everything is seasoned well. We loved the torched items we got (I think the first night that was the ishidai and the kamasu, and the second night a couple of items on the nigiri omakase were also torched), and the flavors all melded super well. The appetizers were a tad pricey for the portion sizes - $5 for three pieces of takoyaki is a bit much even when the takoyaki is excellent, and likewise $6 for three pieces of karaage - but the quality of the meat and seafood was great. Geso karaage was also well-battered and the dipping sauce was much preferable to the one that came with the karaage in our opinion. The sashimi fell a bit short for us, mostly because the dry slices of black truffle felt like they interfered with the textures of the rest of the dish without adding much flavor. The hotate sashimi was also pretty small in portion. I skipped those offerings the second time I came, because what I really enjoyed was: The nigiri and the handrolls! As mentioned, the sushi rice here is great, and all the fish here is super fresh. The second time I visited, the chutoro nigiri was so creamy and delicious. I also really really loved the ikura handroll that we got the first time we came; highly recommend that whenever ikura is on the menu, which isn't every day. The unagi hand roll I got the second time I came was also great, with a perfect char flavor and not too much sauce to overwhelm everything else. I ended up not getting the sashimi omakase that they also offer for $60 (11 pieces), but that's an option if you're looking to try more types of fish. The kushiage set is very simple but also very tasty! The batter isn't too thick which allows the ingredients to shine; there's not too much seasoning in the batter itself, but the skewers do come with a radish/soy dipping sauce mixture that helps to flavor the items. My favorites were the sweet potato and the mushroom. Looking forward to seeing how this place grows, and wishing them continued success so we can visit again soon :) read more

Came on a Sunday around 7pm & the bar was completely full, so we were seated at a regular table. We were about to take our business elsewhere when the server finally came over to give us menus. We were told that since we were not sitting at the bar, our rolls would be regular rolls instead of the signature ones because the freshness of the special prep method of the wrapper couldn't be guaranteed. We enjoyed the mackerel appetizer & the yuzu sorbet but the rolls were nothing special, bit lackluster. Haven't decided if I'll come back to try their signature handrolls. read more

Came in for my second visit after a craving for sushi and celebrating my sister's first week at work! This spot is super inviting with the pink lights and calming atmosphere. I didn't catch the name of our waitress but she was honestly one of the nicest and coolest waitresses I've ever had. Loved the hand rolls here; we ordered the 3-set for $16, which is a great price and can fill you if you're not especially hungry (though I'd recommend ordering more). They're really generous with the fish meat inside the hand rolls too. The chicken karaage is juicy and succulent; they don't over-batter the chicken either. Heian is a new handroll bar in the north end of Dallas. I went during their soft opening and everything exceeded my expectations! Service was impeccable and every piece of fish was very fresh. Since it was their soft opening, they gave us complimentary miso soup and Brussels sprouts as appetizers. The sprouts were lightly charred and mixed with eel sauce and sunflower seeds which was perfect in between handrolls. The menu isn't too large but the quality of each item is amazing. I went with the 5 handroll set which included salmon, crab, yellowtail, spicy tuna, and one of your choice. Each handroll is filled with plenty of fish and the nori was very crisp, which is an essential part of a great handroll. Heian is a great addition to the food scene in north Dallas. They specialize in individual sushi pieces, hand rolls, and cold tastings so people who are saying they didn't get full after 3 rolls...duh... The staff is great. I wanted to give this restaurant a 3.5 start but not an option in Yelp. The food was ok but the price is ridiculous high compared to the quality. One piece of uni is $20 but the sea urchin is not even close to the top quality (dark color, tiny, not sweet at all), which dont worth the money. I expected watching nigiri making process or having interaction with the chef as it's a reasonable expectation in a full-OPEN sushi bar. However, my friends and I sat there for 20 -30 mins watching chef's back only and waited all sushi coming together? 0 visibility of how the sushi made and almost 0 interactions. Finally went to see what the hype was all about at Heian after reading other raving reviews about it. Walked in to a beautiful U shaped sushi bar, brightly lit and tranquil atmosphere. Waitress was very attentive, sushi chefs were not super talkative (which I'm actually ok with). We tried to see if they had an omakase option but they told us they basically just had a nigiri or sashimi chef's pick of the day so we decided to try one of each. Presentation on the nigiri and sashimi boxes was beautiful. Quality of the fish was ok, although there wasn't really anything fancy to match the price or portion size in my opinion. It honestly left us still hungry so we decided to order some hand rolls and this is where the "problem" arose for me. The hand rolls were prepared by a different chef and let's just say he didn't wash his hands prior to the preparation of those hand rolls. I tried to tell myself to give him the benefit of the doubt and maybe he washed them in the back where I didn't see.. however after he served us the hand rolls, he was clearly bored because it was not busy so he started reaching his hands in and out of his pockets, touched his mustache, rubbed his nose.. I get it, we are human, but let's just say I didn't see him wash his hands after that before he continued working. Completely unacceptable.
