Wow! What a treasure. Superbly tasty food, excellent value and the warmest welcome! We always look for individually owned ethnic restaurants when on the road. Found Hector's and rolled up with high hopes of inexpensive deliciousness. Hopes were fulfilled and then some! The Cuban and Colombian food was as good as we've had anywhere - and we seek it out all over. We got the Colombian Piccadillo beef plate and every bite was better than the last, a fab mix of savory meat, rice and beans offset with the sweet plantains and yucca fries too! Seasoned just right, we didn't want it to end. Got two beef empanadas for the road also, and these were every bit as tasty even the next day - I bet fresh and hot they would have been superb! The flan was rich and authentic too. As well as the fantastic tasty food, excellent value, we were also welcomed most warmly and felt right at home. Staff were eager to please. The place was cheerful, interior simple bright and charming. We asked the desk clerk at our hotel if he was familiar with it and he grinned and agreed, he goes every chance he gets. Hector was cooking when we visited on a cool October Wednesday afternoon. The food was quite good and the service was excellent. I had the Colombian Special with shredded chicken and Banana Foster for dessert. Tell the wait staff if you don't like cilantro. It's used in many dishes, but they can leave it out in most/all cases. Cilantro tastes soapy to some people due to a genetic trait that's fairly common. There are a bunch of flavors in the Colombian Special. It's meat served with beans, rice, yucca fries, fried plantain slices, salsa, and an egg cooked however you like. Yucca fries are similar to french fries, but more earthy, and there's a nice mayo dipping sauce on the menu for dipping. The meats served with the Colombian Special are cooked tender, not dried out or burned on the edges. You pick one meat from four choices. Plantain is like a richer and denser banana. It's like a small dessert. The salsa is thin and light, served in a paper cup, with chunks of tomato. It's more like pico de Gallo salsa than nacho-dipping salsa. Put it on your rice and beans if you like. The Banana Foster dessert is rich and is easy to share. Ask for individual-size bowls to serve it in. Try the habanero sauce. It's a table condiment, but you have to ask for it. There is seating inside and outside, with a window on the patio for takeaway orders. The wait staff will come to your table outside, same as they would inside. Just announce your presence at the window when you arrive. I had a great experience and intend to come back. Give it a shot if you're in the area. Don't be scared if you're not familiar with some of the ingredients. It's all pretty tame and should be accessible for people from this area. read more

Had lunch at Hector's today. The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic, promptly greeted by friendly staff. I ordered the Chorizo burger, it was cooked just right. It came with a side of chips, and house chopped salsa. While I truly enjoyed my Chorizo burger, the pattie could've been a little bigger. That's just a personal preference though. The chimi mayo they give you to put on the burger was fantastic also. I would highly recommend this place. If you have not been here you are missing out. I will be going back. read more

This is the first Cuban restaurant I've ever been to, and I will definitely be coming back (maybe even tomorrow)! I had the Cuban sandwich which was quite flavorful. Before that arrived to the table, I had a garden salad which had cucumbers, tomatoes, and some diced pineapples in it. Usually, I only eat my salads with just lettuce and dressing, but the excellent flavor of this salad surprised me. For dessert, I had the Cayenne brownie sundae which had a very faint spice to it. The waitress who served us was kind and glad to help. Hector, the owner of the restaurant, certainly showed care and friendliness to the other customers around me. He asked my grandfather and I how our food was, and we both complimented it, which made his already-bright smile brighter. Highly recommended little spot that serves Cuban dishes. It's in the old Rays BBQ spot. They really worked hard to improve the facility. The decoration is trendy shabby wood/metal. The owners seem very nice. The retired couple each spoke to us and were very proud of their restaurant and very interested in what we thought and how we found them. The menu is very limited. I ordered the Cuban sandwich, my wife the chicken quesadilla. Additionally, I ordered a single empanada, my wife a cup of soup and chips and cheese. The good: the Cuban sandwich was excellent! Great bread, slow smoked pork ham dill pickles and a light smear of mustard all pressed in a panini press. A great sandwich executed well. The empanada was also excellent. Picadillo with herbs and seasonings, a little yucca minced in there fried to perfection. Served piping hot with some homemade habaneros salsa. There was some heat in the salsa and the flavor was very good. The not so good: the chips and cheese were bad. The chips were generic bag variety and the queso was jar Tostitos. It wasn't even adequately heated when we received it. It was cooler than room temp. The $2.00 happy hr cup of soup was served in a tiny styrofoam ramekin. My wife's spoon wouldn't fit in the container it was so small. It was a tiny shot of soup and way over priced. It didn't even contain enough soup for her to really decide if she liked it or not. My wife's quesadilla wasn't very special either. Pretty basic with not a lot of flavor from the chicken filling. Our server was not so good. We had to flag her down to order. Once she brought us our food she completely disappeared. There were no other patrons there. The owners sat at a table off on the side but no one else was there around 2ish. Apparently she was off having lunch or doing side work. We were not her concern any longer. I finally waved my hands and spoke loudly to get her attention for some beverage refills when we finished our meals. It was awkward. She didn't want to come back over. I would absolutely recommend the Cuban. I would recommend the empanada and the habanero sauce. I would like to see if they changed up the empanada like maybe a chorizo or other filling. I would not hesitate to try the Cuban specials/ Cuban food. I would not recommend trying the non Cuban items and I'd avoid the dips. The salsa served with the sandwiches was ok and likely house made but it could have been from a jar. Nothing special about it. Maybe my wife just ordered poorly and the young girl was trying to finish her shift. Either way wasn't a great showing for them. Next time we're in the area looking for food I could absolutely go for getting a Cuban sandwich or try a Cuban dish. My wife would take some convincing. read more

Hector's Hard Lemonade the bomb and a deal for $4. Columbian bowls were plentiful and all the flavors were different but paired beautifully. Server explained what we would be tasting and she nailed it. Cilantro not over done-yayy. I feel like a food critic here but this place is worth a visit.
