We stopped here on our way home from the airport and were impressed immediately. One of the workers greeted us as we were walking in with our puppy, letting us know if we needed anything to make sure we let him know! we then went to find a seat, and another worker made sure to move some unused seats to another table so we would have somewhere to sit. We were highly impressed with the friendly workers! The atmosphere was very cool, clean, and fun. So, I finally come to Davy Jones Locker and what do I find? A lot of Pyrates who CarryBeerIn (say it really fast)...Ok, dumbest opening line for a review and I promise you, it isn't going to get any better. So, put your peg leg on, put a patch over which eye is better, grab your mug 'cos the Siren are calling you into Heavy Seas. Arrgghh! (Well, that was rubbish, i'm never saying that again) Came here for the annual Beer and Bar-B-Que fest and what a fest it was. As breweries go, we're lucky to have some great local places for beer, but thus far, none has been more fun than coming here and their fest. It's a pretty big brewery so between finding space in the brewery itself among the huge tanks (tempting to just dive in), the loading dock, and outside there was enough room to set up multiple tables for local artisans of que and beer related foods. Then you still had five different stations just for serving beer. Smart move. You had the greeting room which already is set up with taps and beer swag. Then are you kidding me...Are you Firkin kidding me (sorry), but between the firkins and fresh tappings of beer in two other locations, you knew you were going to have a good time. Now, being that they have done this before, there was barely a wait time at the various lines for either beer or for food. The fresh tappings were spread out between a two hour period, so that there was never a rush. The Imperial Stout with it rich dark flavors were great, but the two major highlights was the Red Sky at Night which is a Belgium Saison and the Siren Noire, a rich velvetly chocolate nib stout that by the end of the night will have you hear Sirens and you begin to understand why Ulysses had his men tie him up so he could hear their song. The food highlights: Too many actually...between their own house pulled pork and coleslaw sliders to the frito pie from another vendor. Or the chocolate using the Heavy Seas beer...you didn't want to escape the maelstrom of beer infused... everything. It also happend to be the owner, Hugh's birthday....so, needless to say. It was like a bunch of sea pirates doing a sea chanty on crack. So, is this place worth going to with an event? Hell, yea! Bear in mind, you go to one brewery tour, you've pretty much seen them all. What is going to make this different is that it's really great beer, great people and after you had too much to drink you can buy soap made from beer to clean yourself up. I have been to the tap room several times and am always very pleased when I do. I always order a Peg Leg to start, which is a delicious Imperial Stout. Then my eyes always end up wandering to the Cask Ale being served. I have had a wide variety of cask ales from Heavy Seas and they are always worth a try. When I was last there they had a Golden Ale that I really wanted to try, but they had just run out before I walked in. Another great part of Heavy Seas is being able to sit outside and get food from Pieces of Eight. Nothing is better than a delicious wood-oven baked pizza and a beer sitting outside on the patio. I always like going and will continue to visit. The service is always really good and the prices are extremely reasonable. read more

I have actually never been to Heavy Seas for a normal tour, but I have attended the Pyrates, Pigs, and Pints festival two years in a row. The brewery gets packed for events like it so get there early. What makes them stand out are the different foods brought in by local restaurants. However the food goes very quickly. Heavy Seas has some great brews. My personal favorites are the maizen, hang ten, and loos cannon IPA. The brews on tap are always changing so keep an eye out for the next big thing. Aside from a couple tap rooms the brewery is essentially a factory. However there are a couple TVs at one bar to catch some sports games. As long as you have a car to take you there, you can have fun hanging out at the brewery to watch a game or just relax with friends. read more

What a great time we had at the brewery. Living in Bmore I'm very familiar with Heavy Seas beers, I'm also a fan. Their barrel aging program is absolutely awesome, so I couldn't wait to take the tour. I would first like to mention we rolled in here with a bachelor party, so we were going to have fun regardless. For $5 a person you get a glass and 5 poker chips. These chips act as how you get tastings of whatever is on tap. I will say this, the pour does not equal a taste, it's more like half a pint! Outstanding. So after a few "tastes", we grabbed a full brew and took the tour. The head brewer gave us our tour, so he was very descriptive and seemed pretty excited to about the new brews that they were working on for 2015. The tour lasted about 30 minutes or so. We then headed back out to the tasting room and then to the deck they have outside. Prior to leaving was able to purchase a bunch of their Uncharted Waters bomber bottles. They were much cheaper at the brewery then they were in a store. We had a great time and I would highly recommend coming here for the experience and the beers of course. read more

They could have turned us away as they are in the middle of revamping the taproom but with a little elbow grease and a vision... we made it happen! Nice brewery, they had a great selection of beer on draft, as well as to take home! They also had an area for bags and foosball in the brewery area, a little warm that day, but still a pretty nice area to hang out and play a couple games. They also had a food truck outside, I didn't eat, but it looked to have a lot of food options, to enjoy with some great beers they had! A great place to get awesome, locally-brewed craft beer at a fair price. While most craft beers today are excessively hopped (in my opinion), they have a variety of hoppy and less-hoppy beers alike. Most pints are around $5 and growlers are very affordable too. They always have something seasonal or experimental to try, as well as always serving a cask-style ale. The room can get crowded during happy hour, but is otherwise very homey. Go on a tour and you'll see just how huge an operation they are running. For $5 you can get a souvenir class with a few ample samples. When the weather's nice, enjoy the deck. Also, all year-round they have a good selection of food from their food truck with many awesome pizzas, sandwiches, and sides. An all-around great place! read more

I stopped in here a few weeks ago with some friends after trying out the new Guinness spot just down the road. This place also had a delicious food truck outside so we were happy to grab some grub and good beers to finish off our afternoon. Our bartender, Ryan, was a huge help! He was very knowledgeable about their different beers and had great recommendations after figuring out what each of us were looking for. They also had a few games to play set up on the tables which were nice. Good way to pass the time while sampling all the new creations Heavy Seas has to offer! I would definitely suggest coming here, especially if you're looking to showcase some local flavors. It's close to the airport, so it's a great send off when people come to visit :) read more

This was the last local brewery on my list to visit. Their distribution is relatively wide -- I tried Loose Cannon for the first time all the way in Illinois. Little did we know we were trying this place out on a release night. Needless to say, Heavy Seas was the place to be! Their newest brew was Partnership (I love all the clever names they use) which was a collaborative effort with Union. I opted for tasting it from the cask. It was super smooth. I ordered the Siren Noire for Nina, which she enjoyed as well. They have an area just outside the tap room that serves food if you're feeling a little munchy, but we only came for the beer. All in all, they were a decent brewery and it's nice that they're so close to our house. P.S. They don't do beer flights on release nights. I'm assuming this is because of how busy they get and putting together a sampler can take some time. read more

Husband and some friends and I came to Heavy Seas for their Chili & Cheese Fest and had a beer-y good time (sorry, I couldn't resist)! Husband and I have appreciated Heavy Seas beers since discovering their Great'er Pumpkin Ale at the [now defunct, *sniff*] Best Cellars Clarendon last year. A pumpkin beer fermented in bourbon barrels? Yes, ma'am. When we learned of Heavy Seas Chili & Cheese fest, we signed up instantly. Chili + beer + cheese + a crisp fall day = perfection. Heavy Seas was lettin' it flow, endlessly pouring from their excellent beer selection. On tap were Classic Lager, Gold Ale, Loose Cannon American Hop Ale, Peg Leg Imperial Stout, Red Sky at Night Belgian Style Saison Ale, Winter Storm Category 5 Ale, Great Pumpkin Imperial Pumpkin Ale, Great'er Pumpkin, Holy Sheet Über Abbey Ale, and Smoke on the Water Imperial Smoked Porter -- to name a few. Amazingly, we didn't think there was a bad one in the bunch. My favorites are the Gold Ale, Red Sky, Great'er Pumpkin, and Holy Sheet. Husband loves the extra hoppy Loose Cannon and the seasonal, ESB-style Winter Storm. Heavy Seas is producing some darn fine beer in this vast facility outside of Baltimore. We also got unlimited samples of some fabulous chili from area restaurants and caterers like Alewife, KS Catering (loaded tots!), Captain Thom's Chili Pepper Company, and my personal favorite of the day: The Whiskey Island Pirate Shop's sweet & smoky with their own "dry" hot sauce on top. Exceptional cheeses were provided by Beecher's (their No Woman Jerk cow's milk cheese was to die), Beehive Cheese Co. (I could have eaten a whole wheel of Barely Buzzed, coated in Turkish ground coffee and lavender), and local Broom's Bloom Dairy. Rounding out the good eats were beer infused truffles and designer chocolates from Farfections chocolatier. Kudos to Heavy Seas for not overselling this event -- there was plenty of elbow room -- and doing an admirable job of keeping lines moving. We were Heavy Seas fans before this event, but after visiting the facility and sampling ourselves silly on some of their lesser-known suds, we love it that much more. They're definitely doing Charm City proud. read more

Heavy Seas is the great local brewery whose beer you see on taps everywhere in the Baltimore area. Tucked away in a business park just south of 695 in Lansdowne, the brewery operates a taproom five days a week. I don't really understand the five days a week thing, but since they sell their beer cheaper than at most bars I assume the tap room is more of an advertising venture than a revenue generator. They only serve their own beers, of course, but they have several styles available at all times, including two served cask style that are usually specialty blended with extra ingredients. There are a couple large TVs and many places to sit inside if you want to watch a game, and there are a few picnic tables on the outside deck if you want to enjoy the day. They also have a dedicated food truck on site, Pieces of Eight, which has great sandwiches and pizza. A wood-fired pizza stove. neat trick for a converted school bus, but just another little nuance that makes this place so cool. read more

To be completely honest, I'm not the biggest fan of the yeast profile of these beers, but visiting the taproom was a great experience in and of itself. I have been on quite a few brewery tours, but the size and scale of this one was quite impressive. You also get free pint glasses and 5 free samples with your tour, so that was a good chance to try some of their beers that I've never had before. There were a lot of diverse groups of people: older, younger, homebrewers, newbies to craft beer on our tour when we went, and it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and having a nice time. They also had a pizza truck outside the brewery, so although they themselves do not offer food inside, you're welcome to buy food and bring it in and eat it while drinking. The pizza itself was tasty and they had some nice choices available. read more

Heavy Seas is a solid crowd pleaser. Are you as hop-crazed as the rest of the modern world? They have some highly perfumed choices. Do you prefer more complex, velvety Belgian-style ales? There are a couple of those too. How about just plain old light-colored lager? Yep. There's something for everyone here, where hipsters, frat boys and construction workers coexist peacefully in a sea of many-hued glasses topped with foam. Seriously, the atmosphere at this tap room is so pleasant and comfortable that I'm not sure why I don't go more often. For $5 you get a tour, tasting glass and five very generous sample pours (basically half-pints.) Additional pints are $5 each, so a $10 bill could last you all night, but I have to insist you tip generously because the bartenders here are as friendly and down-to-earth as you'll find anywhere. We stop in frequently to refill our growler and they're great about letting us taste a couple of options before making a decision. Had a pretty goof time checking ‍ (get it.) Kinda what I was expecting I guess. They had a beer release going on, so it was pretty lively but that staff got through the rushes with relative ease. All the distributed beers you'd expect are available, as well as some fun taproom only stuff. There is a pizza bus permanently stationed outside, but didn't get a chance to try any as we got there right at open, and the pizza truck doesn't go live till an hour later. The (becoming standard) stack of board games in the corner. They do have a big place, and room in the back for more backyard type games (corn hole etc.) Beer was good, fun ambiance, definitely a positive experience. Drink local! read more

Since moving to the DC area, I have taken a very strong liking to Heavy Seas Loose Canon IPA, in fact, it is probably the brew I pick up most often when I'm at my local grocery store (unless DogFish Romantic Chemistry IPA is available, then I grab both!). Loose Canon is less bitter than what one might think of a typical IPA as it has a strong floral quality that subdues the bitterness, and it has a maltier finish. Bottom line: it's triple-hopped and it's good. While some may have visited the Heavy Seas Alehouse in Rosslyn, the actual brewery is located on the outskirts of Baltimore in what basically amounts to an industrial park. The tap room itself is open Wednesday-Sunday, and free tours (although you need to reserve) are offered on the weekends. The earlier tours fill up fast, but I had no problem booking a Sunday 12:30pm tour. The tours are open to anyone (including children as evidenced by two that were on our tour), however, you can opt for a tasting, which at $5 is well worth it. The $5 includes 4 samples (probably around 4 oz) plus a souvenir pint glass. The tour lasted about 90 minutes and went through the history of the founding of the brewery, the expansion that they have undergone (including a brand new canning facility on premises), and a look at their actual brewing and storing processes. In addition, being that the brewery is "pirate-themed", the tour guide gives you an ample amount of pirate history with some pop culture (like regarding Johnny Depp's walk in Pirate of the Carribean) thrown in. The guide was also dressed in pirate garb. I'll admit, the gimmick was rather cheesy, however, the guide was having a good time with it so it was entertaining. It probably also helped you could consume some of your samples on the tour! At the tap room, they had about 12 beers to choose from for the tasting. They also sold full pints for $5. Six of the beers are year-round; a pilsner, an Imperial stout, a session IPA, a pale ale, a double IPA, and the aforementioned, Hop3 Loose Canon. As far as the seasonals went on this visit, they had the Tropi-canon (highly recommend as a nice summery type beverage), the Deep Six porter, Yuletide (very heavy at 12% ABV), Hoppelbock (partnership with Troegs). They also had two casks, and were getting ready to release their limited edition Blackbeard's breakfast , which is barrel-aged porter brewed with dark Sumatran coffee. There was ample seating inside the tap room on this day, however, it was so nice we chose to sit on the patio to consume our beverages. There are several picnic style tables set up, but since all were occupied, we just claimed the steps at the end of the deck for ourselves. There was a food truck there thathad a wide variety of food, ranging from wings to pizzas to pretzels, with several specials for the day. My boyfriend had a soft pretzel and it was pretty tasty and not overly salted either. I saw several pizzas go out which looked amazing (for next time!). I would definitely visit the tap room again, but since it's an hour away, it probably won't be for some time, however, I do recommend anyone visiting the Baltimore area (or if you live in the area and have yet to visit Heavy Seas) to definitely make a point to do so, and take the time to reserve a free tour too! read more

I love brewery tours, and I love Heavy Seas Loose Cannon, so it was completely unacceptable that I hadn't yet visited this place. As expected, it was tons of fun. $5 gets you a Heavy Seas pint glass to keep, five tokens for 4 oz pours of any of their beers (which are realistically more like 6-8 oz), and the tour itself. If you want a full pint of anything, it's only $5. Tried a few of my favorites from them, as well as some of their rotating cask beers and year-round varieties that I'm not able to buy up in Connecticut. The Pumpkin seasonal was a little too sweet for my taste, but the cask-aged Loose Cannon, Winter Storm, and Small Craft Warning were excellent. The staff are incredibly friendly and quick to recommend a beer based on your personal tastes, and the tour was a great mix of info and humor. Whether you're local or just visiting, if you enjoy well-crafted beers and an enjoyable atmosphere definitely make time for a trip out to Heavy Seas. read more

Fun and informative tour. Hugh Sisson is quite a personality--I like his passion for beer, as well as supporting local businesses. The tour is a good value since you get quite a few samples, but I wish there was a bit more variety. I'm not a big fan of hoppy beers, although Hugh did make a good argument for why different beers are good for different occasions. I've been a Heavy Seas (Clipper City) Beer fan for over 7 years now and it's good to see the brewery expand over the years. The Heavy Seas Taproom opened on Nov 6, 2013 and is located in the most recently acquired portion of the building the brewery occupies. I visited for the first time on Dec 26, 2013 and was pleasantly greeted by Nicole behind the bar. She quickly had beers to me and my wife. The taproom features the year around offerings from Heavy Seas including Cutlass Amber (Marzen), Gold, Powder Monkey (Pale Ale), Small Craft Warning, Loose Cannon, Peg Leg. The current seasonal offerings are Winter Storm on tap and Yule Tide in 22oz bottles. They also have two hand pumped cask beer taps and Loose Cannon on Simcoe hops was available. You can check their website for current beer options. It's great the seen the brewery serving pints in the taproom which is a great addition to the current tasting available at the brewery tours. Growlers are also available for fill but doesn't seem cost effective unless you must have your beer out of the tap and not in bottles or cans. Loose Cannon, Small Craft, Peg Leg and Seasonals are $13 for 64oz and Gold, Powder Monkey, and Cutlass are $9 for 64oz. I'll stick to drinking Heavy Seas bottles at home and save a few bucks. Snacks are available at the taproom made by the Heavy Seas Alehouse located on Bank St in Baltimore: Old Bay Chips ($3), Caramel Old Bay Popcorn ($3), and Spicy Beer Nuts ($5). The taproom is much larger than the website pictures would make you think and they even built and outside deck with seating that will come in handy during the spring, summer and fall months. Because I'm that PITA, I have a grievance: started a tab on arrival, bought a few drinks for co-workers (in addition to my own drinks, of course), purchased a few tall boys and bottles to go. Opted for the bartender to go ahead and run my card; my receipt didn't list anything, only a total. I'm happy to tip 20%+ on the beers poured but I'm not going to do so on the carryout.
