I've been coming here for a few years now since the launch and their affiliation with Hot Ones series on YouTube. I understand their policy in not letting taste samples of Hot Ones hot sauces, but the woman with blonde hair who was curt when explaining that samples of those hot sauces aren't allowed. She was just downright rude about the whole manner. read more

Heatonist - Picked up a bundle! - Herbs & Spices Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

This place has hard to find well curated hot sauces and the staff seem like nice helpful guys. Picked my husbands favorite peach hot sauce up for his birthday along with a mango one called tears of the sun. I appreciated that they took the time to wrap the sauces so they would not break on the way home. The prices are good for the area. The staff were in the back with piles of papers and computers having a meeting. One of them spotted me and yelled out "hot sauce" and they all came out. I said oh I see the hot sauce is a front for some sort of business. The guy behind the register replied with a smile that the hot sauce was the business. Left thinking the hot sauce is the product- the people running it are the business. I hope they do really well! read more

When I walked out of here, I messaged my friends to tell them I fell in love. With Heatonist. This is one of 2 must go to places for any visit to NY. It can be overwhelming when you walk in. So many hot sauces. Where do you start? Ask questions or tell the staff what you like or don't like. What an amazing tasting experience!!! The lady who helped me asked me a few questions to start then selected a few she thought I might like. As I tasted each, we talked about them and she further tailored my tasting experience. Talk about passionate, knowledgeable and patient. She knows her hot sauces and was so kind about answering all my questions. Between selection, experience, cleanliness of the store, and staff, I can't rave enough about this place. I walked out with 8 items and had to buy some items for friends. Now I wish I bought more... Guess I'll have to go back :) read more

Disappointed with the service - my boyfriend and I placed 2 separate orders on April 19th. He received his on April 22nd and I got an email on the 23rd that they were going to be sending it out by the next day and apologizing for the delay- it's now April 27th and nothing has been shipped out just that it's still confirmed. I sent an email and they said they would be in contact soon and provided a number - I called the number and now they aren't answering their phones. How did 1 order arrive last week and then the other is still sitting in a warehouse? I'm giving 2 stars because I like their selection but the service is awful and very disappointing for my first time using the site. read more

COVID-19 review: stopped by the store's pickup window over the summer when I was in Williamsburg, and the staff amazingly helped me locate a hot sauce that I once tried at my ex-boyfriend's apartment, based on my description of the bottle alone (helpfully, I could recall neither the name nor the flavor profile, only that it was amazing). For the curious: it was the Heartbeat Hot Sauce Habanero flavor. Since then, I've ordered a few additional types of hot sauce from their site and really enjoyed them all! Shipping was also insanely fast. Love the variety and rotating selection here. read more

After being aware of this place for almost a year, I finally visited heatonist. Though I'm more of a junior enthusiast of hot sauce, I've been searching for new hot sauces in order to sub something into my rotation of sriracha and tabasco- this place initially seemed like the perfect place for me to do some self exploration. This place is accessible from the L, only about three minutes once you exit from the Bedford Ave station, so it's convenient to get to, so long as you're willing to go into Williamsburg. Stepping inside, you might notice that there is a long-ish hallway that extends to the back, but the actual showing room where customers are allowed is only limited to one small room, which was a little surprising. Contrary to what I thought, this place isn't quite a 'hot sauce museum/compendium' like I thought it would be. Rather, they only carry a select few hot sauces which are very high quality, and out of the mainstream. That means you won't be able to come here and buy run of the mill sauces like cholula or texas pete. Instead, you'll be able to view and buy sauces which are artisan, and have unique pairings. For instance, there are a lot of fruit based sauces that they sell here. There was also a very good maple syrup hot sauce that looked great. They luckily provide free samples here, though. I went through quite a few different hot sauces. I don't think I loved any of them however, except maybe two of the sauces that I wound up buying. The first was secret aardvark, which I know is a cult classic- as far as I can tell, it's almost on the cusp of becoming a mainstream hot sauce. Aardvark isn't actually very hot, but has a great flavor to it, and goes pretty well on plain chicken, as I found out later that night. I also wound up buying a pineapple habernero hot sauce, which actually didn't wind up being as good as I thought it was going to be. It tasted a lot hotter in the store, and wound up being way too runny- I would have liked it if the material had been slightly more viscous. Areas for improvement: first of all, I think it would be great if they included water here. It's actually pretty unfathomable that a HOT SAUCE store which runs free sampling of hot sauces DOESN'T provide complementary water. I suspect this is a business decision to assure customers don't spend all day lingering in the store and trying all possible hot sauces. While this could be a sound business strategy, I didn't appreciate the fact that they didn't offer water, mostly because I really needed a palette cleanser after trying various sauces, never mind the heat. Secondly, it might be a bit much to ask, but it would be great if these guys served some kind of crackers or cheese or something. I know it would rack up the costs here, but realistically, trying hot sauces by themselves is just not reflective of how most people would eat hot sauce. Unless there are weirdos out there who eat straight up plain hot sauce, most people will either put it on something like mac and cheese, or pizza. I'm not sure what the idea food to be served alongside a hot sauce tasting, but it would have been great. Thirdly, why was there only sauce? I had actually come here thinking I wanted to buy some powdered form of heat, but left a little disappointed, since all they had was sauce. Finally, I feel like a whole, independent store dedicated to hot sauces, like in this instance, is a little much. The showing room is very small, and I really don't think they need to rent out the whole space. It might make more business sense to partner with a local grocery store and have a dedicated corner for hot sauces, with a hot sauce specialist staff member. I get owning ones business is a great thing and all, but I don't think it's necessary to attract traffic, so long as your products are good. read more

if you look at their reviews elsewhere such as Facebook you will see the same customer service problem dating back over 3 years!!! Chronic no ship/no refund and then customer service delaying, stalling or ignoring. In my case, I ordered a bottle as a guest (did not register on their site) in September. Then...in November a second bottle appeared and they charged my bank for it! I called and asked what happened?! They said it wasn't them...it ws the bank. After a dozen emails they REFUSED to acknowledge the mistake and - get this - wanted me to PAY to return the bottle AND THEY STILL WERENT going to refund me! They wanted me to go to paypal and the bank to get my money that HEATONIST kept. Again...don't just take my word...see the other reviews read more

This place is AMAZING! All of the hot sauces I had here are really really good. The people who work here are super helpful and willing to talk to you about hot sauce forever! You can sample as many sauces as you would like and let me tell you I had my fair share. The staff is knowledgeable about hot sauce as well! Not to mention they give really advice about places to eat near by! Thanks for the advice, the hot sauce, and the friendly service! I would love to go back the next time I'm in NYC. read more

Avoid this place, bad customer service and selection and items are overpriced from what you can buy online, I can't recommend.

Big fan of the sauces! The delivery wasn't perfect. It took almost two weeks. But it was worth it.

If you crave capsaicin then this place is for you. They have quite a selection of hot sauces for you to choose from. You can browse the shelves of their numerous sauces, but if you don't know what you are looking at they are just bottles. The key about the Heatonist is that they will let you sample those bottles until you find one that is right for you. The staff will ask some questions and try to pick something that matches your taste. A couple of sauces stood out from the rest and I decided on them. I recently read somewhere that hot sauce and in particular capsacin prolongs life, so there is even more reason to stop by the Heatonist. read more

So much fun trying out all kinds of hot sauces!! Learnt about these guys from zagat 30 under 30, so I wanted to pay a visit for a long time! Host is super friendly. We tried almost 10kinds of hot sauces, ranging from hot, very hot to super hot! All of them are delicious! I also felt no pressure to purchase after tasting. Strongly recommended if you are a spicy food lover. Try out the most spicy one - it's like a paste and super delicious! Warning - no drinks in the store so bring some milk/water if you have low spiceness tolerance. read more

Hot Sauce!!! Who doesn't love Hot Sauces!! I have been trying to come here for a couple months and I'm glad I finally got to it yesterday! I spent a little time speaking with the lady and found out great things to do with the hot sauces that I bought.. I can use some in drinks, on salads, fish food. The advise she provided was amazing! It was great to find out that there are also open kitchen nights when we can taste the food with the sauces and that they filter out unpopular ones and use new rotations. They have seasonal sauces as well and a new collaboration they are working on which I'm excited to try. I purchased 4 different ones yesterday; can't wait to finish them so I can go back for more. If you love sauces.. This is the place for you-- Not all of them are spicy/hot so it's worth a little kick in your butt to try some of them out-- Trust me you wont be disappointed. read more

I've never seen a Hot Sauce store but I'm glad I ran into this one. They have a wide variety of hot sauce from mild for the lighthearted to blazing hot for the adventurous type. The prices are NOT average hot sauce prices. Don't expect a bottle to cost 5 bucks. Average bottle of hot sauce cost around 16 dollars but it also depends on the sauce. I purchased a mango hot sauce; I didn't even know these existed! A sweet mango taste that kicks after a couple of seconds. I would definitely come back if I need more specialty hot sauce. If your in the market for regular hot sauce, I recommend going to a supermarket, it's cheaper and quicker. They also they let you try a Huge variety of Hot sauces so you can find which one matches your personal taste. read more

This place is the best for even the over 50 crowd!! We love to cook and our whole family is crazy about sauces and hot sauce. Congratulations Noah and Tyler and newest addition Kristy to this unique and special place. We stopped here every time we're in town. Great product love playing hot shade challenge with friends. You'll be surprised the ones you love and the ones you don't! Great part game

Heatonist is the shit. Noah & Tyler dreamed up this hot sauce paradise that is lovingly curated in a slick, yet inviting show room. It connects to a test kitchen/dining area where they hold fun, imaginative events: just last week they featured a habanero farmer from Japan who not only made an exquisite dinner, but intrigued everyone with his life story. All the wares are delicious, interesting, and diverse. You can sample everything before you buy it--where else can you do that these days? Perfect for gifts, party favors, dinners, whatever! Go by, try the hot sauce, chat with the fellas, and leave with your sinuses clear and your spirits thoroughly warmed. My favorites include the Queen Majesty Scotch Bonnet & Ginger, the Ghost Pepper & Blueberry, and the Smoked Habanero BBQ. read more

Its not a hot sauce store where you see a fat guy wearing a button downed short sleeve shirt with a chili pepper and flames pattern like you see at a flea market. There isn't a million different little jars which all taste the same but boast "the hottest hot sauce" or have some ridiculous and borderline offensive name. Yes, some of the names are a bit cheeky but this place is better for FLAVOR. It treats hot sauce as a condiment that should sit next to your salt shaker not a dare or just a challenge. You can get some mouth scorching sauces but you will also find hot sauces with amazing blends like ginger, mint, honey and the staff can recommend foods that would pair well with it. There no gimmicks like, "YOU MUST SIGN A WAIVER TO BUY THIS HOT SAUCE." Its a refined store that isn't snooty. If you like heat, you're welcome here. read more

Pretty good selection of hot sauces! The store isn't huge, but there were still a decent amount being sold (from mild to very very hot). Heatonist is a curated hot sauce and condiment purveyor in hipster Williamsburg. The selection is incredible and varied, covering multiple types of peppers, combinations with fruits or honeys or other vegetables, sours and sweets. Most notably, they have a taster bar, where you and your friends can sample any of the wares, compare spice levels, and triple dog dare each other to lick the hottest of the hot. We happened to be go here on a whim while we were in the area having lunch. This is a really nice place. The shelves look like they were designed for high end perfume or something. The floors appeared to be wood and kinda matched the shelves. The hot sauces were laid out sparsely and purposefully. It was a very nice elegant way to display the different brands and types of sauces. They carry small hot sauce companies that make small batches at a time. I also believe they said the sauces were all natural. Each week they get new sauces so you will never get tired of just the same old stuff. They have a tasting bar with approximately 25 sauces of all heat levels and flavors. I liked this because you can try it before you buy. Some hot sauces are hit or miss, so this way at least you can pick something that is your heat level and a flavor that you are looking for. The staff is very knowledge about the sauces in their store and can help direct you to that perfect one you have been searching for. Price of the sauce was $10 for the 5 oz bottle of the one I chose. I'm not sure if the price differs with different brands or sizes. I cant wait to go back again and sample some more!! read more

It was well worth the travel as the sauces I got were amazing from the NYC to the Sichuan Ghost Pepper there is something there for everyone I assure you, so if your in Brooklyn and close by Wythe Ave this is a must visit heck if your in Riverhead Long Island and your into hot sauce get out there it is well worth the trip.
