Dr. Heaton himself did my cataract surgery. Now my right eye has horrible floaters in it. I wish I had never had this done. I went in to see another Dr to get my eyes checked for glasses. A tech did the check a Dr signed off on it. The Dr can't be bothered to make sure they get it right. The didn't. Went back requested an appt with the Dr. A student Dr came in and did the check up. Not my Dr. still wrong. Today I'm just having them put my old prescription in the new frames I had to buy. Now I will have new glasses that I didn't need. Still haven't spoken with my Dr. what a money grubbing place to go. STAY AWAY!!! They don't care about you just your money. read more

Do NOT get MONOVISION Lasik without knowing that you LOSE THE ABILITY TO: read a medicine bottle, read highway signs at any distance, easily read a book in bed, thread a needle, remove a splinter from your own finger, read a cereal box at the grocery store from the center of the aisle, read the computer screen while standing behind someone to assist them, read something on your phone except at arm's-length, use a sewing machine comfortably, make jewelry, read Netflix movie descriptions from your couch. The concept of your brain adjusting to seeing most anything is clearly FALSE and or was not explained appropriately. The surgical procedure was excellent; but when I questioned (afterwards) why I could not do these things I was told that was explained to me beforehand. I was told what monovision WOULD DO, but not what I WOULD NO LONGER BE ABLE TO DO. read more

Cataract surgery and eye care these are the only people I would trust with my eyes and have them more than 10 years. The office staff in the Athens location and Tyler location I've been nothing but kind loving and making you feel like you are a person to be taken care of at all times. After I moved I drove more than 100 miles for nine years I have my eyes taken care of by the Athens office, and I'm thankful to have moved to East Texas and can see Christy in the Tyler office. Dr. Heaton himself did my cataract surgery, back right after Covid. I even paid $8000 out of pocket for the the upgraded lens. When I went back to get my eyes checked by one of the other doctors in there, he said the lens was foggy in one of the eyes. That scared me so I never returned, but I did go to another Eye Doctor just this weekend and my left eye is seeing one letter half implanted on top of the same letter That could indicate poor placement of the lens. I have never been happy with my eyes since getting that done. Please do not go to this place. I'm going to find somewhere else to fix my if it can be fixed. One of the most efficient eyecare operations I've ever encountered. Yes there are a lot of patients and it's a clinic, but there's great division of labor. One set of expert test your eye, so that the ophthalmologist can devote all his time to focusing on you. He even has a person that takes his notes so he can focus on his work. I recommend Dr Dossey, highly. The eyeglass store connected is also great, not the cheapest, but they grind the best lenses. read more

On Tuesday October 29 my wife and daughter helped an elderly lady who was about to fall outside Heaton Eye Associates. The elderly lady said she was going in for an appointment but felt dizzy and could not stand. My wife and daughter helped the elderly lady into the office and asked the front desk personnel for help. They asked if she had actually fallen which my wife responded, no as they had caught her before she hit the ground. The response was, put her in one of the chairs cause we can't really help her or else we become responsible. What type of answer is that especially when someone needs help, is elderly and alone. None of the ladies got up to check on the lady and it wasn't until a person from the glasses section of the business came out and said she would help. My wife then asked the front desk group for a cup of water for the lady and none of them got up or acknowledged the request. I really hope that this is not the way this front desk staff really responds to their patients because it is a terrible way of showing concern for a fellow human being and terrible customer service. We were very disappointed for the overall lack of attention, professionalism, insensitivity towards their patient and lack of responsiveness from this group of front office staff. read more

I have worn glasses since I was fifteen. I am 72 and have, for the last 7 years or so had really erratic vision. I went for a new prescription and was told I had cataracts and my optometrist recommended Heaton Eye Clinic. This was the best news in the last decade. Dr. Nichol performed the surgery and today I have better vision than I have EVER had. i have near 20-20 vision and have no need of corrective lenses other than for slight astigmatism and reading. For those of you contemplating or needing this surgery, i can't recommend these guys enough. I took the baseline correction and the results were fantastic. Good doctor, horrible billing department. I've been fighting HEATON billing for months now. They continue to send me inaccurate bills and lose payments that I have made, I even sent them copies of my bank statements and then I hear nothing. I requested an itemized bill which was sent to the escalation team then again, nothing. I contacted them again and was told that they rebilled my insurance and I would have to wait. wait, wait, call again, and go through the whole mess again. I complain and get a bill with a higher amount. read more

Dr. Heaton didn't care about me as a patient. He treated me like cattle. I went there and asked if they could do anything to get rid of my FLOATERS. The girl at the front desk told me to make an appointment and ask the doctor. I showed up on the appointment day and was taken from room to room, machine to machine for various tests and long waits. I OBJECTED TO THE REFRACTION TEST, because I don't need a prescription, but was told "it's just our procedure". I spoke up several times about my floaters but was ignored by the clinician. I WAS NEVER ASKED WHAT MY VISION CONCERNS WERE! Hours later I finally saw Dr. Heaton. He droned on and on about cataracts. AT NO TIME DID I ASK THEM TO LOOK AT MY CATARACTS! I brought up the issue of FLOATERS and all he said was "You have a lot of floaters." He never mentioned treatment options and by then I was too worn out to ask. Now he is pursuing me to pay for a Refraction test that I never wanted, asked for, or needed! I never asked for a comprehensive, thorough eye exam, I just wanted to know if they could get rid of my FLOATERS. They have a one-size-fits-all process that you get shoved into, whether you need it or not. read more

I arrived at 8:10, 25 minutes ahead of my 8:35 appointment. I left the office at 9:05 and had not been called for my appointment. I routinely schedule all appointments early in the morning, as it hard to imagine being over 30 minutes behind schedule when you have just opened. I am certain that no one in the office cared that I left. My time is just as important as any Doctor in the building, and I do not appreciate being ignored. I assure you that Dr. Heaton does not know how patients are being treated at Building 2. Hopefully he will after this review is posted. By the way, this is not the first time I have waited more time than I should have at this clinic. This was just the proverbial "last straw." read more

I asked the lady who did my vision screening what her credentials were and their was zero school just on the job training. I am pretty sure I could go to Walmart and get more professional people doing my exam. Besides that the wait time is awful. And office staff are rude. This is a hard pass. read more

I went in for an exam they told me I needed cataracts. I attempted to make a confirmation for cataract surgery more than a half dozen times over a 2-month period but never once returned a call from scheduling. I believe they just focus on the high dollar LASIK or anything else more expensive than simple cataract replacement. I don't recommend them at all. read more

Awful customer service. It is such shame for this small town to have such a business that treats patients the way we were treated. The staff at Heaton Eye Associates sat on my son's pediatric referral for 10-days, were oblivious of the plan of action that was previously discussed with Dr. Spindle's referral coordinator and technician to get my 4-year old son in for an appointment, and unresponsive to calls. Our pediatrician resent an urgent referral to Dr. Spindle for our son to be seen immediately and the staff decided it was not urgent and they would not schedule us an appointment until January. Such a shame this business is treating people like this and forced us to go to Dallas where a pediatric ophthalmologist did deem the case urgent and got us in on Friday. Do not recommend this establishment. read more

My optometrist set me up with Heaton for a Yag laser procedure. I was early for my appointment but had to wait a long time to be called in for my eyes to be dilated and numbed for the procedure. I paid my copay of $40 but I had to pay them an additional $45. for the preparation of the eyes for the procedure. I was told the $45 was not covered by insurance. Finally, Dr. Heaton came into the room, did not check any notes nor my eyes and simply advised me that he would schedule the Yag laser procedure for another day. I stated that my eyes had been dilated and numbed and why not proceed with the Yag laser procedure. Dr. Heaton stated that he does it by the book and it helps to improves his billings. To this point Heaton Eye collected $85 from me and billed my insurance $200 without having performed the Yag procedure. I also would be charged an additional $250 copay for the use of their clinic. My out-of-pocket cost would be $335 while I had all of this done by Eye Care Associates of East Texas for a one-time cost of my $40 copay and nothing else. read more

I went in for Lasik Consultation at Heaton in June. Prior to that I had a Lasik Consultation in Abilene before moving back to east tx. I found out through Heaton that I had dry eyes and Dr.Riesner treated my eyes for a month before performing Lasik on me. I had Lasik on August 8th so I'm still healing and going to post op appts. Dr.Riesner was very caring throughout the process. As for the procedure it was not painful but it wasn't comfortable either. So if you decide to have Lasik go straight home and go to sleep. I don't like how irritated my eyes look and feel but so far I can see better than I could with my prescription. read more

My experience with Heaton Eye Associates (Tyler) and subsequent LASIK surgery, could not have gone better! The employees were friendly throughout, and Dr. Nickel was phenomenal. Highly recommend! He answered all my questions, explained exactly what to expect, and really helped me to feel comfortable with the procedure throughout. And it went like a dream! (Even though I didn't opt to use the anti-anxiety pill they offer. Not many surgeries can be effortless without meds for nerves! But this one was. Once he started I was completely at ease. It was totally painless and quick.) The first few hours after surgery were painful, but not unbearable. Probably a 4/10 on the pain scale, lots of stinging and constant watering (just like when you cut an onion and your eyes get irritated) but I slept and distracted myself and within 2.5-3 hrs my eyes felt normal again- albeit a bit dry. Faster than I expected! 10/10 would do again. In a heartbeat. I had realllly bad eyesight, like -7.5 and -8 (which approximates to 20/700-1000 vision) and I am at 20/15 vision day two. I could not have hoped for a better outcome. Thank you, Dr. Nickel, for my new eyes! You've given me a gift I will treasure. read more

I did not personally have a great experience with Heaton with their LASIK service. When we initially discussed pricing, I was told the pricing and advised to pay $140 for an eye exam as part of the qualification process. I was informed that that $140 would apply toward the procedure cost. When I later called to finalize pricing and pay for the procedure, I was told that I could choose to either apply the $140 OR have a discount. So in other words, my $140 - paid to see if I would qualify for the procedure - was a total loss that I will now never recover. It feels to me that what I was told before was not entirely accurate. I personally cannot recommend Heaton as a result. read more

I don't know why I keep doing this to myself but every single time we come here we have to wait 1-1.5 HOURS! Every single time!! I recently had LASIK done here with Dr. Nickel as a birthday gift to myself for turning 30 and oh my gosh my experience was amazing. As soon as I checked in I was greeted with a smile and from there on the staff was so kind and amazing. Dr. Nickel came in and went over my procedure again with me and prayed with me before my surgery and it was so nice and reassuring. The next day I was already seeing 20/15 with both of my eyes! I am so thankful for Heaton and to be out of glasses!! I would recommend them over and over again. read more

My husband and I both have went to dr Heaton and the staff was great. Dr Heaton was alright but His breath wasn't hideous. We both had to hold our breath to sit in front of him. We both complained to his staff and suggested a mint or a quick brush before visiting patients. Each time we went it didn't change. We got eye exam and when I go my prescription all I had was bifocals in it. Then I had to go to some one else out side of Heaton to get a correct prescription. It was a waste of time and money. Not to mention having to smell the mans breath. If you're gonna be in some ones face at least do something about your breath. Very disappointed since we heard he was the best. After 600 dollars for glasses to find out I only had bifocals was upsetting to say the least. Then I had to wait another 2 weeks to get new glasses. Over a month in all just for glasses and out too much money. read more

My husband had lasik eye surgery a year ago at Heaton Eye Associates. It was scary wondering if it was going to work, how well it will work, and how long it would take to recover. We own our own business so there isn't any time for "down time". With several appointments, he had to have his eyes dilated which makes for a hard day at work. The day of surgery was the worst for him. It did hurt while recovering. My suggestion is to take Tylenol with you so you have it. I had to stop at Walgreens and get him some. Prior to surgery, he could not see if he didn't have his contacts in. It was all he remembered so he didn't know any different and wondered if it was even worth it to have the surgery. He is so happy he did it now. His sight it better than 20/20 now. The only regret he has is that he did not do it sooner. Through the care credit card, we were able to pay it out with 0% interest. The staff and doctors were great, very friendly and helpful. read more

Visited for a LASIK consultation, had to pay $140 up front for the consultation, no problem... 2 1/2 hrs later after some pretty basic screening, most of which I have done at my yearly visit to the Optometrist for new glasses; I was told I would be a candidate for the surgery but that the Dr cannot tell me how long it would work because I'm 33 years old and farsighted. So for that reason, he said I don't recommend LASIK, you can get a second opinion elsewhere if you want. Quite depressing, a waste of money and a waste of time. Don't pay $140 and waste over 2 hours to find out they can do the surgery but don't want to because they can't garauntee how long my results would last and it's "not worth it" Isn't up to me to decide what is worth it? read more

In 2016 I was refered to Heaton Eye Assoc. Dr. Nickel to see if I needed Cataract Surgery. I did and met with a gentleman that showed me three options. I chose option three which I was told I would be able to see at a distance , at my computer and be able to read without the use of glasses. Option three cost me $5,000 + my surgical co-pay of $195 for each eye. After having my right eye done I could do all three. Once I had my left eye done I could no longer read. I also had halos so bad I could not drive at night. Dr Niclel had ask me if I was left eye or right eye and I told him I did not know. He then asked if I was left or right handed. I told him I was right handed and he said then I was right eye dominate. Each time I came in to see him I still could not read unless I put what I was trying to read on the floor. His assistant had me do a little test and told me I was left eye dominate. Once we told him he said I did not have enough area to cut or trim to make my sight better. After growing tired of my complant he finally did a surgery that made me able to read at arms length.. meaning the entire length of my arms. I also each time asked about the halos and he said some people take three months while others can take up to a year. Well, fifteen months later I still have halos. He also at on point told me he could refer me to someone else. I have NEVER had a Doctor tell me to get a referal from another Doctor. After thinking about it for a while I decided to get a second opinon and I was glad I did. That Doctor told me he had tried the lenses that I have and every patient complained about halos and said they could not read. So he stopped using them. So I paid $5,000 to get option two which you may have to wear glasses to read. NOT GOOD.. I feel someone owes me a refund. I went in for my last visit EVER with him to be told he could send me to Dallas and they could change out my lenses. Hello, is he going to pay for that surgery? I went to a site to see his reviews and most were two stars. I guess I should have done that before I ever went to him. I would not recommend him to anyone. read more

This place is excellent. The nurses and the doctor were friendly, prompt, and concerned about my well being. The front desk girl seemed a bit spacey but I still didn't have to wait all that long until a nurse took me back. They saw me in less than two full days from my initial phone call when the office that my optometrist recommended needed more than a week. The building is very nice and I got the feeling that this is the top of the line place to be in Longview for taking care of my eyesight. I don't know why anyone in Longview would consider going to Tyler or Nacogdoches to see an eye surgeon. read more

I had LASIK here 2 days ago and am already seeing perfectly! I've been wearing glasses and contacts for 20 years and have always been terrified to let someone do a procedure on my eyes....it was so quick, completely painless, and the recovery was super easy!
