After a hard slog through the bush we were out of supplies and starving. So with 20 minutes until the next train, rumbling stomachs and a little apprehension we decided to check out Heathcote's seemingly deserted shopping strip. We weren't expecting much-burgers, fish n chips, maybe a charcoal chicken. The decision where to eat was easy-as there is only three choices-so we settled on a tidy looking shop next to the over-pass. Honestly, I was expecting the worst. Soggy chips, dead flies in the display, surly service...but we were pleasantly surprised!
After a terrible experience trying to find late lunch in the 'hip' part of Redfern yesterday, we had a much better time in the bush today. I wish I had taken a photo of the excellent grilled fish and garden salad we both had. Good, well cooked chips, flaky fish and crisp garden salad-all for $10.50. Something like this in 'Bondi's best' chipper costs $16. Nice presentation and a clean, 90's retro shop. Nothing fancy. Just good ol' fashioned fish n' chips (we skipped the Chiko rolls and Dim Sims.I am fairly health conscious). Food for the soul. This is one of those 'hidden gems' you hear about from time to time.
