It's been awhile since I ate at the Heat at EDSA Shangrila and I still remember vividly how good it was. Celebrating my nephew's birthday, we ate there again last night.
Compared with Makati Shangri-la, they have a little more food options, but, unfortunately, have little less flavor. The best thing I had last night was the roast beef, and it might also be because I hadn't had beef in a very long time. The rest I had, however, was disappointing.
Soup station: tried Sinigang, Hot and Sour Soup, and Lobster Bisque. There was no hint of sourness from the sinigang. The hot and sour soup tasted more like sweet and sour soup. The lobster bisque was generally ok but was very concentrated and salty. And as you drink more of it, you will somehow realize that it is not made from lobster, but I am guessing for the cooked curacha they are serving. Just a thought because it would be a waste to throw the stock where the curacha were cooked in.
Dimsum section: tried Spinach Dumpling, Scallop Siomai, and Xiao Long Pao. The scallop siomai was a favorite. It is somewhat a hakaw then topped with fresh scallop. Xiao Long Pao, on the other hand, was nothing to be proud of. The meat was grainy and dry. The soup somehow disappeared. The wrapper of the spinach dumpling had a very bitter taste and the filling was bland. The wrapper texture was also too rubbery. I think they were trying to copy the wrapper of a Chiu Chow Dumpling but failed.
Arab/Indian station: tried Shawarma, Chicken Curry, and Paneer. Shawarma has good flavor with the onions, it is pre-wrapped for you on a pita bread. I just wished they didn't use pita as it didn't fit. Chicken curry was very good. The paneer was also good and the spicy sauce was great as well.
Seafood section: tried buttered curacha, buttered prawns, cold prawns. Curacha meat is grainy, which is a sign of it not being fresh. I don't remember it to be grainy when I tried it in Zamboanga. Buttered prawns were bland, there was no sweetness from the shrimp. The cold prawns was better, as it tasted like giant suahe.
Japanese section: tried Okonomiyaki, Salmon Maki, and Salmon Sashimi. Okonomiyaki was truly a disappointment, it was too starchy. I tasted better on those served at food parks. Salmon Maki was okay, nothing special. Salmon sashimi was okay as well, not a feel of freshness though.
Fried food section: tried beer-battered fish fillet, shrimp tempura, breaded chicken skin, and fried calamari. Well, everything was crunchy but slightly salty. I felt the chicken skin weird because it was breaded. It's basically chicken skin, breaded then fried. I think I would appreciate it more if they just fry the skin without breading it.
Dessert station: tried Turon, Walnut Tart, Egg Tart, Strawberry Cheesecake, Bread and Butter Pudding, Halo Halo Panna Cotta, Churro, and Brownies. Turon is not crunchy, it just goes with the banana when you bite it. Walnut tart and brownies are stand outs. Egg tart is bland. Churro is great when eaten immediately.
It is sad that a once sought-after buffet place is not as great as how it used to be. I do sincerely hope they improve. read more
