Without me having to say a word, Dr. Hayes understood exactly what Chelsea meant to us. She treated my sweet girl with such gentleness, dignity, and love, and showed me extraordinary compassion throughout the entire process. She made an unimaginable day as peaceful and comforting as it could possibly be. I will always be grateful for her kindness and the care she gave Chelsea in her final moments. Words cannot describe how much we love Dr. Hayes and the phenomenal work she does with grieving…read morefamilies and their beloved pets. This past weekend, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to put our cat, Kiki, to sleep after a long battle with her illness. Kiki hated veterinary clinics, and near the end of her life she had been to several. We wanted her final moments to be peaceful, at home, free from the stress of her carrier or the sterile environment of an animal hospital. Dr. Hayes responded to my inquiry immediately: a phone call, a voicemail, a text, and an email with thoughtful resources and her availability. When we finally spoke about Kiki's condition, she was calm, compassionate, and professional. She walked us through every option and was transparent about pricing from the start. What also set Dr. Hayes apart was her availability over the weekend, something that is genuinely difficult to accommodate and not something every provider offers. Her flexibility during what is already an impossibly hard time is noteworthy and deeply appreciated. The day itself was one of the hardest our family has faced, but Dr. Hayes brought a quiet, somber grace to it that was genuinely comforting. She was extremely patient with us, never once making us feel rushed, and gave us all the time we needed to say our goodbyes to Kiki, something that meant more than words can express. As someone who works in medicine myself, I was especially moved by the care and respect she showed Kiki's body after she passed, it did not go unnoticed. She was also wonderfully gentle with our 10-year-old and with Kiki's brother Mason, who wanted to be there to say goodbye. I highly recommend Dr. Hayes to any family navigating this painful decision. Her compassion, professionalism, and flexibility make her exactly the kind of vet you need by your side in those final moments. We are so grateful she exists and does this work. If you are facing this impossibly hard decision, you could not be in more caring hands.

He arranged for us to bring her remains to Nevins Farm's shelter on Sunday. When we attempted to do so, we had a very distressful situation with a member of the shelter's staff and, therefore, did not leave Scully's remains at the shelter, (see my review of Nevins Farm's animal shelter for more information). Dave personally went to the shelter Monday morning to address the issue. Meanwhile, we went to the shelter and met with Glen Gaccione, who was also very respectful and understanding of what we've been through. Due to what happened the day before - although it wasn't any fault of theirs - Hillside Acre gave us a refund for the cost of the burial. Hillside Acre staff also demonstrated sympathy and compassion three and a half years ago when my cat Mulder passed, as well as several years ago with my parents' cat Lego. Aero's Emergency Visit - April 29, 2025 (Saugus Location)…read more We rushed our dog Aero to VUCC after he was attacked and bleeding from the head. From the moment we arrived (approx. 3-4 PM), we were met with cold, transactional behavior. The front desk staff had no urgency, no sympathy (just asked about payment). Inside, there was minimal communication, no reassurance, and the stitches they placed were poorly done. We picked Aero up around 6-7 PM, and when I asked if we needed to check out, the receptionist laughed and said "yeah, your money." Not only was this unprofessional, it was cruel, we were traumatized and in shock. Two weeks later, we saw a plaque in their lobby demanding "respect" from clients. The irony was unreal. I do not recommend this location if you need true emergency care or compassion. We left shaken, disrespected, and deeply disappointed.

It is always important to interview any veterinarian and ask around for peoples' experiences…read morebecause my experience will be different than others based on several factors. We were regular customers of Bassler Veterinary Hospital for several years, beginning with when the doctor was on Bridge Road. When the doctor moved to the new building, it seemed as if the prices increased. We later found out that the doctor was including a training fee, meaning the additional fee was to continue to send her staff to training in the field. I can appreciate that and appreciate seeing all the certificates on the wall. At least it is assurance for you knowing her staff continue their education in the field. I can't tell you how many times I have been to other vets and they can't draw blood correctly. The staff here can do it flawlessly. We had our differences when the doctor moved to this location and it has been a few years since we have been to this doctor. The business is thriving in the area, so Dr. Bassler is doing something right. We would like to come back at some point to test the waters again, in the event there was some unfortunate experience with her and us at the beginning. I can say that Dr. Bassler does care about your pets. If you think prices are high, just shop around and ask around. Also consider pet insurance. We have Nationwide (VPI) Pet Insurance Superior and always recommend it. Be sure to ask the doctor and staff to explain all charges and ask questions all the time if you don't feel you are being informed. Prices can be expensive if you don't ask. The staff here are very friendly, educated, and caring. Dr. Bassler offers a general practice for your pet including dental services, in a new and clean facility. One of our shepherd lab mix had an end of life stroke (Dec '24) and the other shepherd hound mix had a debilitating cancer and lost key functions. (Feb '25). We were supported in our final decisions by the team at Bassler including Dr. Bassler herself. For anyone who has been through it, it is difficult to lose a part of your family. That said, I'd recommend Bassler. They are compassionate explaining the process. They have a dedicated room. They have a facility they work with for options and cremation, urns etc. Cost is around 300 for the procedure at the hospital and another 300 if you want to have the 3rd party do the arrangements for you. We did the free items they offered without additional cost. A basic box for ashes and paw print. You can spend a lot more if you choose for name plates and urns etc. For awareness, the Bassler group were very supportive and accommodating but they are not a 24 hour facility so plan accordingly. A few days later, we received a nice handwritten card from Dr Bassler that was signed by the whole staff who worked that day. None of it is easy or ok but Dr Bassler did the best for us in a difficult time. Obviously we stand by them as we used them twice. Best of luck.
