They were able to see our dog quickly and gave good service. Our Miniature Dachshund seems to be responding well to treatment. Thanks, CAVH! read more

I have been a longtime customer of Cape Ann Veterinary Hospital and was disappointed to learn that the practice had joined a private equity-backed veterinary group. Its prescription policy now leaves me feeling that corporate financial interests are taking root in a relationship that should prioritize pets and their owners. In my experience, electronic prescription approval is available when you purchase through the practice's affiliated online pharmacy. But when I wanted to use an outside pharmacy offering a better price for the same medication, I was required to pick up a paper prescription and mail it to that provider. Why does choosing better value mean extra travel, paperwork, and delay, while buying through their affiliated pharmacy gets convenient electronic approval? To me, this feels like pressure to purchase through their preferred channel. I understand Massachusetts allows veterinarians discretion to provide paper prescriptions. My concern is how that discretion is being applied depending on where the client spends their money. I have requested a written explanation from the practice. Longtime customers deserve transparency about this policy, the financial relationship with the affiliated pharmacy, and why outside pharmacies are treated differently. If you have experienced the same issue, I encourage you to document it and ask the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office to review it through its consumer complaint form: https://www.mass.gov/how-to/file-a-consumer-complaint Pet owners should be able to seek affordable medication without unnecessary obstacles from the practice they trust. read more

This office doesn't care about pets only the $$$$ I was stuck on 133 road construction and late 6 minutes when they told me to reschedule and they charges me $ 88.00.I couldn't help the line of stopped traffic letting back hoe off the truck. They refused to not charge . I refused to go back.Clearly exploiting people for money. The ladies that the desk was rude and the vibe in the office is rushed tense .In and out next. Go somewhere else like anywhere else. DONE ! read more

Don't bother. Not accepting new patients. Not particularly helpful if you have an urgent veterinary need.

20+ years going to CA Vet, I choose them specifically because they are 10 minutes away in case of an emergency! They always made me feel as though I wasn't a good pet parent, very unsettling. They fought me tooth and nail about cheaper meds ordering online, (only flea and tick Meds), for the dogs, again unsettling. There are other things but I will not dwell on those. A Thursday morning came when I needed them the most, one of my dogs was breathing heavy, vomiting, lethargic, and appeared to be distressed. I called them for professional advise and they would NOT see her immediately, WHY??? They told she could be seen at an appointment 4 hours away or I could bring her to a Petco Urgent Care 30 Mins away, WHY AGAIN??? She has NEVER been anywhere but CA Vet and she would have been extremely uneasy with her surroundings. Desperate I made my way to Petco, she died in my car on the way there, not surrounded by loved ones, or at home, or in a facility familiar to her. I have been paying CA Vet BIG Bucks every year just for the convenience of a local small town Vet. Shameful, Cruel, Heartless, with a total lack of Compassion! Never again, no animal or human deserves this treatment after 20 years. They are Horrible! read more

On August 10, 2023 my 15 year old dog got up to use the bathroom & collapsed on the kitchen floor. My husband made him as comfortable as he possibly could. I called the office as soon as it had opened asking about in home end of life care. The woman who had answered the phone confirmed mine & my dogs name and let me know she'd email me some veterinary offices that do in home end of life. I made phone calls all morning. Of the five places she gave me one was on vacation, one didn't come to Gloucester, and I left message for the three others.I also called every veterinarian in town. My dog was at the end of his life & was suffering. I placed a call back to my vet ( Cape Ann Veterinary) and spoke with the same woman who had answered the phone ( I wish I had asked for her name) I asked if I could speak to the Vet. She asked me for my name again & what the problem was. I let her know that I needed to euthanize my dog. She would not let me speak to the vet ( I just wanted to know if there was anything I could give my dog over the counter to make my dog in the very least in less pain. The following took place after. I know it long but this is the context of our whole conversation which is important. She instructed that I would have to wait for someone to call me back.it could take several days for someone to come to my house to euthanize my dog. I could not bring my dog in cause he hadn't been seen since 2017 and wasn't up to date on his shots. Which he was. My dog has been fairly healthy & extremely nervous at the vet. When 2020 rolled around you were not allowed to in the room with the vet ( several conversations happened with them & what our options were) She argued with me saying my dog wasn't up to date on his shots- He was. She didn't believe me & when I told her he had a 2023 dog license with the city she asked me where I had his shots done. I told her Petco. She asked how I was able to do that- I let her know my husband held him. She told me I couldn't bring him in & would have to bring him to the Emergency hospital in Woburn. It was noon time. She also explained if my dog bit anyone that he would have to quarantine for the days.I let her know he didn't have ten days. At that point she said there were other ways they could take care of him. At that point I didn't want to know what she was talking about. I thanked her for her time & hung up. This was a very emotional & stressful day & she did nothing but make an already emotional & difficult day worse. After I got off the phone Dr Parrott's office returned my call. He was able to come out to my house & euthanize my dog without incident. I not aware if that veterinarian knows how his help talks to people but shame on her. I would never bring another animal to this place ever. This woman has no compassion & shouldn't be working with the general public. read more

We were so grateful that Dr. French made himself available over the holiday weekend to return a call about our 16 year-old Yorkie, who is at the end of his life. Dr. French walked us through a few assessments by phone to determine that our little guy did not need emergency attention, and that we could follow up with the office later in the week. read more

I've been taking my dogs to Cape Ann Vet for years. I have had 3 dogs that have gone here religiously for about the past 24 years. I adore Dr French, his son and Dr Powell. I recently went in to have my dog Willows check up and met with Dr Orr, so that we could renew her levothyroxine for her thyroid condition. She has had multiple rabies vaccines in the past. She was due for an annual rabies shot. We have done a lot of research on dogs being over vaccination for rables. Our friend, out of state , takes her dogs to a holistic vet, who claims, vets are only vaccinated for rabies once and that if a dog's titers are tested and they have immunity there is no need to over vaccinate them. Our dog has several health issues, a thyroid condition, Lyme and an immune disorder. She is an older dog and arthritic as well. I told Dr Orr that we'd like to have her titers tested before choosing to over vaccinate her due to her health. She told me that it was the law in Massachusetts and if I did not vaccinate her not only would they not continue to treat her but would not refill her prescription. I asked Dr Orr how many times she has been vaccinated for Rabies during her career and she responded once. I said that's right because after that shot, you have immunity. I said my dog will most likely show she has immunity with a titers test. My dog is currently on Levothyroxine and if she doesn't take this medication her hair falls out, she will start passing blood clots and will basically deteriorate close to death. She said she would not accept the titers as it was the law in Massachusetts. I told her Ok; we'll find a new vet after 20+ years or patronage. Well, I went home and looked up the law. Massachusetts is one of many states that allows for a rabies exemption by a licensed professional which can be based on the health of the animal. So she not only lied but lacked the empathy for our concerns with our dogs health after we have been loyal patrons of Cape Ann Vet. It clearly isn't about the health of these animals because I did offer to have my dog's titers tested to prove she did in fact have rabies immunity. It's all about the Benjamin's, not your dog. This was a blessing because I don't want to do business with people who lack integrity and vets who truly don't care about the health of my dog. I'm disheartened to have to leave Dr French and the other vets who go above and beyond. We will miss them but that was Dr Orrs choice to refuse further treatment of our dog, and her refusal to issue an exemption. My oldest son almost died from a hep b vaccine, they read him his rites at 3 days old, he had a dozen health issues for most of his life due to that injury, so I've spent 24 years studying vaccines. We will work with vets who want our business. read more

The very best in pet care. I have been going to them with my many cats for over 35 years. Dr. Reid is unbelievable. She nursed Katie back to health and would not give up on her, after she had all her teeth removed. The entire staff is loving, caring and very thoughtful. They understand what it means to have a pet and do everything within their power to make you as the owner of your precious animal comfortable. I cannot say enough good about Cape Ann Vet - the two Dr. Frenchs, Dr. Reid and Dr. Powell. read more

Complete ripoff! I leave there every time very upset. Over charge on everything. Receptionist was NOT helpful at all and all doctors do not care about the well being of your pets. Only interested in money at the Cape Ann Vet. Just lost a customer! read more

Where to even begin ... I will start by saying that ALL the docs and ALL the staff at Cape Ann Vet Hospital have been amazing. I purchased an English Bulldog puppy 8 years ago. I had never owned a dog before and had no idea that the dog I purchased was going to have an enormous amount of medical issues. This Vet helped me through every issue ... Ear infections, allergies, eye surgeries and many more. They loved and cared for my dog, Abby, until I had to put her down recently. They were very supportive of my decision and helped me through a very difficult few hours. Abby loved going to this vet and wasn't scared at all on that final day. It was so comforting to know that she was surrounded by people who loved her as much as I did. I would highly recommend this Vet. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE IF YOU LOVE THEM! No personal contact, talk, soothing, etc with animals. Did not pay attention when I told Dr. Bradley of my pets symptoms, only to have my pet die two weeks later from what I wanted them to check into. Very uncaring practice and over charges in a big way. read more

This was our go-to place for our animals. The only doctor we liked was Dr. Powell. He was great with the animals but if it was anyone else they didn't help out or explain anything to me. Thankfully I switched over to the Seaport Vet which was so much better now only if Dr. Powell would switch over too! read more

Do not use these folks. They almost killed my dog by Rimadyl toxicity! They never explained the risks or what to look out for....

Although competent, you always feel very rushed here. The charges are ridiculous and I always leave feeling very taken advantage of with double the bill one would expect. Not friendly either but somewhat condescending. When I was out of work they constantly mentioned I owed $50 which was the remainder of a totally ridiculous $400 bill. As I write this I realize I don't want to go back. I hope I can save you the trouble. read more

Dr. French saved our cat last year with a difficult surgery to remove a tumor on our cat's tongue - 90% of the time, these tumors are cancerous and difficult to operate on. So happy that we gave Dr. French a chance because he saved our cat's life. Reasonable prices as well. Thank you Dr. French! read more

Many thanks to the Cape Ann Veterinary Hospital for their help above and beyond the call of duty in helping me get emergency medical care for my dog, Rosie, in Washington DC. My heartfelt gratitude to Jeff, Jerr and Helene. Thanks to all the good caring people who helped us, Rosie is on the mend! read more

After several years at Cape Ann Vet, we switched away. While I never had any horrible experiences here, I consistently felt overcharged (I would see tests/vaccinations on the bill after the fact that were not authorized or warranted) and in general the staff just never seemed to care all that much. Unless you specifically ask, you don't know what vet you will see until he/she walks in the room, and the receptionists are hard put to make eye contact. You should expect to wait a good long time both before and after your visit. After one too many visits that felt impersonal, rushed, and very very expensive I decided I was done. There are some truly fabulous veterinary options on Cape Ann. Cape Ann Vet is not one of them. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about this practice. The vets at Cape Ann Vet go above and BEYOND what most practices do (I'm a technician at a Emergency hospital and have worked multiple other places to compare.) In no other General Practice that I know of does one of the owners personally go in for a few hours every Sunday and take phone calls with questions from their clients and encourage them to come in even if the owner is stressed though they aren't even technically open! People here on Yelp I've noticed accuse many people in the vet industry that they are all about the money well you should all know all medical fields are incredibly expensive and in order to buy the products your pets need they need to make money as well. Oh if only we had such good health insurance for our pets (and there are some great pet insurances out there) as we do ourselves :)If you are looking for just cheap services rendered then you are not thinking of your pets best interest and should evaluate having a pet as it is like having another child. I have met all these doctors at some point or another and know that unlike other practices in the surrounding area ALL of them have nothing but good reputations in the inter-veterinary field and you want a doctor or doctors that have good reputations with other doctors and veterinary hospitals for the safety and benefits of your pets should your pet need to ever be transferred to an emergency or specialty hospital. read more

this review is about 5 years too late but i would like to say anyway . i thought i would forget and move on. i have not forgotten. about 5 years ago my indoor cat cheerios who i brought to cape ann vet regularly had grown listless and was sleeping alot. she was 16 yrs old at the time and i thought it was old age. i was on vacation and home one week and noticed she was not urinating regularly. the next day i brought her to the cape ann vet to see if they could help. i went without an appointment thinking i could wait for an opening with the vet. when i got there the receptionist actually said " what do you want me to do i dont know whats wrong with your cat" when i said maybe the vet will know she told me i would have to come back tomorrow, but i see you are overdue for your rabies shot. i explained she was an indoor cat and zero chance of rabies. and she obviously had more serious issues. the receptionist threatened it was illegal to not have a rabies shot. so i consented to it and she gave my litless cat in the waiting room a rabies shot and charged me $65. cheerios died the next day. there is now another small pet vet in gloucester. i dont know anything about them but sight unseen i would recommend everyone go there. do not ever go to cape ann vet west gloucester read more
