So I'm a mother of two, a teen daughter and a younger son, and I'm trying to get back in shape and hopefully get them started on a healthier path too. Figured I'd check out some of the local gyms and see what's out there. I checked out health sport a couple weeks ago and wanted to share my experience. I live outside Arcata so first stop was the Arcata club. Idk, maybe it's fine for some people, but it kinda just felt like it was full of young meathead gym bros hovering around the weights and grunting. Front desk staff were friendly enough but the vibe inside just wasn't it for me. Weight room was honestly a little intimidating, especially when you're trying to bring your kids along. Then I checked out the McKinleyville club. It was super quiet and seemed clean, but also kinda boring? Not a lot going on there, like if you don't love cardio machines and weights. Not sure what else there really is to do. Might be fine if you just want a basic place to work out, idk yet. Then Eureka, locker rooms definitely needed some love. Pool had a bunch of stains at the bottom which just made it feel kinda gross. Crowd there seemed a little older though, which I actually liked better than the Arcata vibe. But good luck finding a staff member when you need one. Felt like nobody was around. Got roped into a "tour" by one of their sales guys as we wondered around. Dude's hair was all messed up like he just got up from a nap and looked like a gym bro in a polo. And worse, it looked like he was checking out my daughter whenever he thought I wasn't looking. Made me very uncomfortable and SO creepy. I finished the tour quickly and we left. I don't remember his name but if you go there, you'll know who I'm talking about. Will not be going back there. Heard they have a site down in Fortuna that's supposed to be nice but that's way too far for me, so not even gonna bother. Honestly not sure what my option is at this point. Arcata feels too much like a frat house, Eureka just feels sketchy, and McKinleyville, maybe?? I was told I could set up a trial so maybe I'll do that and see how it feels when I actually try to work out there. Guess we'll see. Anyway, that's my rant. Just wish it wasn't so hard to find a decent place to get a workout in without feeling weird or uncomfortable. read more

Arcata Healthsport swim program has been wonderful for my son. We really love the pool, the instructors have been kind and skilled in their work with him. She is a really good communicator and has done a wonderful job hiring the swimming instructors, and also supporting us in finding the right instructor for us and accommodating our schedule. Jaden walked me through an initial fitness assessment and was awesome. After an intake interview he ran me through a body composition analysis and "talk test" on the treadmill. I came away with a better feel for where I'm at physically, some solid benchmark numbers to use to gauge my fitness and progress, and great insights on how to improve my routine. read more

Doug and the staff are usually friendly, helpful and attentive. Prior to Covid the gym was already having renovations for the better. This could be seen in their workout room, their second floor gym and their main floor lobby area. Post covid, the gym has easily accommodated to create both an indoor/outdoor gym feel. Workout machines can be seen where the child day care center used to previously be present. This extends to the outside gated large tire area into the pool. Just be careful not to fall in hehe , joking aside, I always look forward to seeing how the machines moved around. It is a wonderful way to feel various flows of energy, if that is even possible :-) The reason for one thumb down is because my need to experience their classes again, such as Zumba, Cycling, etc. read more

So I'm currently in town for a LEO department training. I've been going to this gym for approximately three days now. I was given a membership pass from blue lake hotel in which they give as a complimentary perk. Today on 11/19/2020 at approximately 1725 hours, I walked into the gym and checked in with the front desk. The female employee shall remain anonymous. As I checked in, she stopped me and questioned me on why the hotel is giving passes out to their guest. She followed by asking how long have I been in town and where I'm from. So I explained to her about my visit. She then began giving me attitude followed by saying "go ahead and workout, I just don't want you to bring Covid here" I felt uncomfortable and I was not pleased to workout at this establishment so left within 30 minutes. I felt that I was being targeted due to being a out of town guest, why accept guest if you display disrespectful and rude services. For my entire week, I'm not going to be coming back here again. Trigger warning: sexual harassment HealthSport used to be a place where I felt like I could reconnect with my body after a long day. I loved working out there, the Zumba classes made me feel powerful and like I was finally getting in touch with myself again. But sometime around the month of August, when our classes were still outside, an older man in the jacuzzi decided to record us while we danced without my knowledge and consent. Our instructor knew and for a brief time stood between us and him but eventually she stopped. I did not understand this and it wasn't until the class was over that I learned of the events that were taking place. It was not the instructor who informed me of this but a woman who was dancing in front of me. I was mortified. When I confronted our instructor and asked her to tell me next time something like this happened, she told me that she would not because she didn't want me to "start something". The empowered feeling I got from dancing turned into gut wrenching disgust and fear. The person who made me felt strong now made me feel powerless and the autonomy that I had gained from taking her class was suddenly snatched from me. Additionally, this man attempted to make contact with another member, who was a minor, in a flirtatious manner. I later went up to her to make sure she was okay to which she responded that she was fine but me and the other women knew better. I knew that interaction would be seared into her subconscious for the rest of her life and it makes my heart ache to think about how a space that was meant for empowerment was turned into a place for people to ogle us. This man had taken my safe space and perverted it; and if it happened again, the instructor was going to let it him. After that, I never felt comfortable working out in that gym unless I was in a closed off room completely by myself; I still don't feel comfortable working out in that gym and don't think I will ever again. read more

You can go; just keep hold of your financial info. Pay cash. Otherwise, you might get deductions due to no fault of your own. Your debit information on your card is initially taken for the purpose of monthly dues and any other fees incurred such as purchases or rentals, and are covienantly processed in one transaction on a prearranged date. No employee of the club should be able to pull that info and use it for anything else. That is fraudulent. They aren't realizing what they cause the member. My cellphone bill was hitting. and I had to borrow money for that in the meantime. BEWARE, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. They don't even own up to their mistakes. They are funny to worry only about their own money. The Arcata location is a major violator of this. To resolve the matter correctly, I had to email the Founder/CEO, Susan Jansson. After filing a 'dispute' through my bank to get the overdraft fee removed, it still takes up to 10 business days. The thing that makes me most livid, is the the way that the management trIes to downplay it, and avoid a sincere apology because of sending the message that it was a bad mistake on their part. I just signed up for Health Sport. They flat out lied about the price. I was told multiple times it was $75 for the first month and $49 each month after. I payed $86 for the last 6 days of August and what I was told was the month of September. Then I receive a $50 bill for the month of September. When I went in to dispute the bill a different staff member told me the pricing was explained incorrectly and they would not honor the price I was told at sign up. Three stars because The kids Korner is the best!!! And I love the yoga and dance classes. The incredibly overpriced membership fee is what confuses me when the gym is filthy and so dusty. And there is always a broken shower in the locker room. And the bathrooms are kida gross. ...not sure why they can't afford to hire a cleaning crew to sweep up the huuuuuge dust bunnies floating around the basketball court or yoga room. Come on meow! I wanted to start a membership here but I was told the price is $150 a month instead of $40. I use to go to Gb3 In Fresno, Ca And it was a lot cheaper than this ran down place. The equipment is very old, clips are missing from bench press, and machines are unorganized. Manager was a bit rude, commenting on my appearance. Staff could be better as well. The Arcata location is pretty nice, especially since they have done the remodel to the Women's Locker Room. I go to HealthSport because it is the only decent option for a gym around the Arcata area. They have locations in McKinleyville, 2 in Eureka, and I believe one in Fortuna. In order to be able to have a membership to every location, you must have their Gold Membership. Their prices are alright, if not a little expensive for what you get. However, the monthly fee includes unlimited classes (yoga, pilates, spin, strength & conditioning, Zumba, etc) which is what got me interested in the first place. The staff that work here are very nice. The HSP Fit crew (the personal trainers) are especially nice. They always remember my face and are very motivational. I don't know if HS still does this but when I first got a membership, I got a month of personalized training for free. Definitely do that if they still offer it! Normally it's like $120 a month or so. The gym has all of your usual cardio equipment, and they have a small/decent sized weight room. Sometimes I have to weight (lol) around for a bench or to use one of the strength machines, but it is never for a long time. I wish that they would do something with the upstairs portion, however. There is a teeeeeeny tiny stretching room up there, an open studio that they are turning into a personal training room, and a small room with a few elliptical and rowing machines. It would be cool if they made a larger stretching room and another weight room that was dedicated to just hand weights, kettle bells, and stretching. The place can definitely use some updating, which it seems as if they might be working on slowly. They recently re-modeled the Women's Locker Room and it is so much better! If I could suggest anything, though, it would be towel rentals and small amenities such as q-tips, cotton balls, hair conditioner, etc. It's the small things that really make the difference. I frequent this location regularly, and encourage my friends to do so as well. read more

Pros: If you are looking for a place to work out on your own, this is a decent facility. They have a decent lap pool and hot tub, and I have seen their swim instructors for kids and they are very sweet folk who are dedicated & make young kids feel very comfortable in swim lessons.. Cons: They are the only gym of that size in town but there are other options popping up. For the most part there are only a few trainers left who are experienced and know how to work with special needs clients. A large number of the mature professional quality staff are being replaced with 30 and under folk who seem to have a lack of sensitivity, compassion and training. I used to feel welcome and cared for by staff. In the last year there has been a shift. I have felt alienated and discriminated against by the new staff. I agree with the last poster, The term "valued customer" I felt like they kicked me on my way out the door while spouting meaningless jargon. read more

My whole household [most of which are unemployed due to the pandemic, but still obligated to pay rent] is still being charged a "freeze fee" [for about six months] while the gym has been closed, despite my roommate [the main account holder] emailing and calling HealthSport multiple times, for months, asking to cancel our memberships. At this point it's valid to say they've stolen hundreds of dollars from us. Presumably they're also doing this to others. Still trying to get our money back. And now they're furthering their reopening [now that cases in the county have *just* begun spiking beyond any previous levels], having operated on a limited capacity for a while. I just don't see how some people can stand coming here. For what you're actually getting here, there is no way to justify it costing $50 a month. At first, I thought this place was super convenient since it was less than a mile away from my house. But then I really got a feel for what it was like. If you're familiar with Fitness 19, that is what you should expect this place to be like. The only difference is it's a little more spaced out, has raquetball courts and a pool, and its about five times the price. It's always sort of packed. By that I mean there's never a lot of people there, but there's not enough equipment to accommodate for everyone. Now I understand that there's not always going to be an empty machine or bench for everyone, but sometimes it's just ridiculous. It has made the gym almost useless to me since I can never seem to get done what I came there to do. On top of all that, most of the equipment is pretty old and worn down. To me weights are just weights and I don't usually care so much what kind of shape they're in, but for what you are paying, I would expect a little nicer. read more

Unfortunately, the homeless have taken over the parking lot and low class van transients have bought memberships to shower etc. Now the parking lot is a mess of needles and broken glass/car parts etc which have caused 2 flat tires for me. The locker room is now getting ripped off regularly and the bathroom always smells like poop. I am extremely disappointed. This is a great gym with outstanding employees and we all deserve better than this. read more

I love Arcata Healthsport for many reasons. However my favorite 2 piece Nike swim suit, pink and blue tye dye size28, was stolen the other night. I was leaving around closing time and thought maybe the ladies closing had taken it to put it in the lost and found. It was not in there. One other time I had seen a lady walking off with my goggles and water bottle and I had to let her know they were mine. Just when you feel comfortable going somewhere.. don't! Smh. Karma is real. I LOVED that suit. My suit is was hanging just outside my shower stall because the hook inside the stall was broken. I always keep my things nearby but now I realize my eyes must be on them the entire time. I realize it is my fault that I let my suit be out of my eye sight for a few minutes. My one star review is regarding the scum bag that took my suit. If this incident had not happened then I'd rate the faculty 4 stars. I don't typically let my guard down and let my things out of my sight but I was starting to get comfortable going there. I do appreciate the owner replying to my post. Considering the suit is over 4 years old and I can't find it online, I will know my suit if I happen to see it again. I'd do almost anything to have that suit back, it's extremely sentimental. read more

The building is crowded and labyrinthine. You learn not to take corners quickly. The front end employees are friendly but usually very busy. The actual gym section of the building is tightly packed and usually full, I wouldn't rely on it for a regular workout. The pool seems more often than not full of children learning to swim rather than adults laning. There is only one hot tub, and it is also almost always occupied. Out of paper towels in the restroom frequently enough that I wonder why there isn't an air dryer. I would give their HSP Fit program by itself 4 stars. It is a well designed program of studio classes with a variety of styles and class times that has been very effective for me. HSP Fit has it's own workout areas, which is quite nice. By attending two or three classes a week for most of this year and cleaning up my diet a bit, I lost weight and gained a noticeable amount of muscle tone and I didn't even consider myself overweight or out of shape. The trainers are great at motivation, evaluating your performance and showing ways to improve. The Olympic Lift trainer, Kerri, is amazing. read more

I was also quoted 2 totally different prices for my family memberships when i tried to set it up without going they work. I figure they have such a huge turn around in employees and don't care. Joe gave me a nutritional consultation that was transformationaly informative. Curtis is a dedicated professional trainer who got me started on Olympic lifting and didn't waste a minute of my time. Rebecca, Kalynn, and the desk crew are always smiling and are super helpful. Irvin and Drew got me started on my membership and helped resolve my concerns with a small misunderstanding. Thanks guys. Only gym in town. Pros: swimming pool, basketball court. never really that crowded, friendly staff. Cons: a little run down, a little overpriced, way overpriced personal training cost, sometimes its freezing inside and some times it's super muggy. With no other competition in Arcata you get what you get. I am grateful they are here and hope with time they keep making improvements but wont be holding my breath. No more steam room! One of the best things about this facility is going away with the remodel of the dressing rooms. GOOD-fit trainers and friendly staff, plenty of cleaning product to wipe equipment and ample, variety of cardio, sauna and hot tub with massage onsite. Best time for serious weight training is early AM on the weekends. BAD-Strength equipment area is neglected. Free weight equipment is way to close, so much so that a person can easily tap someone during a set. Squat bar padding is torn, cable attachments are rusty and not much of a selection. Backpacks are allowed on the gym floor. At around 330pm on weekdays, high school or junior high kids settle in, workout in packs, hogging equipment and don't re-rack plates. They tend to joke and giggle loudly. BOOTCAMP is quite obstructive and annoying, leaving no room for dynamic training. CONCLUSION, not the place for super serious weight trainers that rely on a timed, successional workout routine. Great place to pick up MRSA from dirty free wights and racks read more

Maybe it's because I've never been inside a swanky city gym, but I find HealthSport to be VERY clean and modern. The new floors, new lighting, and up-to-date weight machines give it a nice gleam. Their fitness classes are great, with a nice array of Zumba instructors (as of this writing, the current teachers all specializing in something different, such as hip hop, West African, and samba). I do wish they would offer some higher intensity yoga classes like you find out in the community. I'm also a fan of their cheap and delicious smoothies, and sauna and steam rooms. Good size gym with plenty of options for all. Good yoga and Pilates mat classes. Group TRX and CrossFit and HSP Fit. Weight loss challenges are conducted regularly for groups at an additional cost. I wish that the weight classes and yoga classes did not overlap (time frame) as much as they do! I wonder why there are no group classes at 7AM each day? Basically I'd like to do both each day, but I am forced to do only one activity. I enjoy the teachers. Worst customer service got double charged for a massage because I didn't give them a 24 hour notice which I understand but explained to them it was an emergency situation why I couldnt make it and still didn't give me the full refund. I get you lost money by me not showing up but my personal opinion is losing Customers from word of mouth is going to be worse than the little bit of money you could of just refunded. Pretty disappointed in this gym, I just recently joined and I'm already considering switching gyms. First of all, the start up price is expensive. Then $61 monthly membership fee? That's a little crazy in my opinion for what you get. I feel like the gym is really basic for the price. They definitely need to do some upgrading & getting better/more equipment. I understand that theirs a pandemic going on, but if you're gonna change the hours so drastically (8:00am-1:00pm) on weekends & close 2 hours earlier on week day's, not have all amenities available (sauna, steam room, jacuzzi), they should at least lower the monthly fees until members get full access to the club. Some people only use the facility for the amenities that we can't even use right now. Not to mention they have an annual fee (which is understandable, most gyms do) where they claim to use the money to update the club, but it looks like they haven't done that in a while. This is a great place to really work up a sweat. Great selection of classes, very friendly and knowable trainers and the sauna in the ladies locker room are a few of my favorite things about about Healthsport in Arcata. Minus one star, because the place can become too busy. I would suggest getting to classes early.
