Very nondescript outside facade - no sign telling you what it is other than a small "BSC" (for Bovine Sex Club) painted near the door. Hard to miss though as the exterior is made up a punk rock style sculpture of rusted bikes & other assorted ephemera. The interior is similar, visually. Great sound system & chill vibes pervade throughout. Weirdly the stage is right in the entrance of the club, on your left, with a long bar along the right side, heading back. Great, crowd, great location in cool area with lots of restaurants & plenty of parking - both on the street up to 2 hours & extended parking for a flat-rate of CA$20 (~$14 USD) from 6:00pm until the next morning, just 2 blacks away.

Are the beer cans running out? It's possible. But, it's a dive in the way of the old dives. And the acoustics for bands are... not great. But they are a sign of what once was. Without attempting to try to present a front of a time long gone, The Bovine simply exists today as it once did in that time long ago, before Smokes stickers, before iPhones, back when people would just go to a bar to talk with those they didn't know the morning prior. Last time I was there $17 for 3 large bangers, mashed potatoes and an assortment of steamed fresh vegetables. Plus gravy. Come on. Excellent. They redid the outdoor patio last year and even though it's in a parking lot they did a nice job. Downside this location has been home to at least 2, maybe 3 failed restaurants before. John's came in and did a dust and clean repairs and paint. But you can't get away from the old restaurants. Oddly there is a second room that is large that used to have couple poor tables and a bunch of tables that only gets used for parties and occasional overflow for the main area. Washrooms for men is tiny and needs a makeover, so is the main area. Really dated decor. It's tough. Do you renovate and raise the prices to cover the costs or do try to keep costs down and keep the prices down? For this location it's starting to feel really worn. However the food is still great and we have even used it to cater a small party of 16 last year. I only took one star away because of the lack of any ambiance and the need of updates.

To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement to say the least. We walk in to find a very relaxed, comfortable environment, nothing fancy. Some booths, a nice bar, classic rock music playing, lots of TVs for sports and a friendly greeting upon our arrival. Great selection of beers and a big menu. We tried the burger (they put it together exactly the way I asked), the Grilled Vegetable Sandwich and an order of Buffalo Hot Wings. All were excellent and perfectly presented. The wings especially were great! Wings were huge, perfectly cooked, crispy, Buffalo hot sauce was spot on. At first glance, the pub looks small, but if you go towards the back of the restaurant, you'll see an open door to another section that has pool tables, more seating, a big screen TV and a cozy fireplace. So if you haven't tried Castle John's yet, it's time to check it out. Highly recommended!

Tried it twice. Wish I could leave a better review…read more Old location and the new one. First visit was escargot (so greasy it was inedible). And a burger, which was average but not stand out in any way. Overpriced for what we got, and service was extremely slow. (It was about 30% full at this time) Old location was divey, but not in a cool quirky way. The 'guest book' had a VERY lewd comment in it (quite long winded and extremely vulgar) the book was left open to that page, Which was in view of my 6 yr old. The comment also mentioned 'Santa' so of course caught the attention of small eyes. The owner was there and when I mentioned it,he laughed and thought it was hilarious. How classy. Second visit was to the new location. Went with a group that had pre arranged. Had the breakfast 'marche'. Which was the only option and had very limited choices if you aren't into bacon and eggs. I did Have a fresh omelette with spinach and feta which was quite good, but there were very few other choices that were health conscious. Service consisted of gesturing toward the other room to find the food, and bringing one round of drinks and then the bill. Entire diner smelled badly of grease and I had to go home and change and launder my clothes afterward to get the smell out. Can't say I'll be giving this place a third try.
