Male Manager should talk to owner and clarify what a service dog is and what is legally the requirement to qualify a service dog. Male manager rudely informed me that only service dogs with a vest were allowed into the restaurant as upon completion of service dog training that they were granted an official vest and that this requirement is "literally state law" - this is literally incorrect. If that is restaurant policy, it is unenforceable and illegal. Male Manager should take care to not speak rudely and passive aggressively about a topic that they are ignorant about. While I read from the ADA website about what defines a service dog, male manager rudely cut me off several times and spoke in an extremely derogatory tone. Advise the restaurant owner to clarify what the restaurant policy is versus the ignorant actions of this male manager (he maintained that this was restaurant policy and did not want to get yelled at by the owner). Please consult a lawyer or someone else with reading ability to review the ADA law and guidelines on service dogs. I have filed a civil complaint with the ADA and civil rights DOJ. read more

The food, service, and drinks were amazing as always! Our waitress gave us great recommendations and was really passionate about the food! This place is just lovely and the food is delicious. I read about difficulties getting seats but i had no reservation and no trouble - was seated as soon as I walked in. It was a Thursday night around 7pm. I read abt the menu item "*let the chef decide*" and couldn't help myself. It feels wrong telling you what was in it but I appreciated having read some examples of what I was in for from previous Yelp reviews so here it goes: chicken thighs (2) on top of faro mixed with sautéed veggies, in some kind of delicious gravy and pickles on top. It was delicious! I'm really glad I ordered it. I also enjoyed the bread bc it came with whipped butter with herbs. Finally I ordered the hazelnut butter cake bc the yelpers and it didn't disappoint. I think it was a tad overpriced but seeing as its locally sourced maybe that's why. Wonderful group dinner experience at Hazelnut Kitchen! This was a recommendation from a friend who used to live in Ithaca, and it was backed by a friend who is a chef/owner of a great eatery in Rochester, NY. So we made reservations for our group of 5 for 7:30 pm on a Saturday night, and then basically fasted all day so we could fully enjoy!! We arrived a couple minutes early and were immediately seated in a big booth towards the back of the restaurant. The place was totally packed, but the din was really reasonable considering 7:30 appeared to be peak dining hour. Two of our party had the 3-course pre-fixe menu for $35. This included a first plate of savory crepe filled with fresh crab salad - a generous portion for a first plate, this was easily a meal unto itself! Both eaters thought it was delicious, though the fact that it was cold was a little unexpected (but didn't really deter from the enjoyment...) That was followed by a bowl of seafood pasta in a tomato saffron sauce - house made (casarecce) pasta with calamari, scallops and shrimp, the sauce was really tasty and the dish was a generous portion. Course 3 was dessert, which was a nice slice of their hazelnut cake with salted caramel ice cream. The eaters didn't have any room left for this dessert, so our server boxed up the two portions, with ice cream separated, for us to take home. Another of our party had the steak frites. When we were seated our server let us know there were only two servings of this left, so our friend asked to have one serving reserved while the rest of us looked at the menu. When it was served, the steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly, and the fresh cut frites were really fantastic, and a generous portion. Every bite was devoured. Two others in our party had the winter vegetable pot pie, which contained a nice mix of root vegetables in a savory gravy, topped by a crust made with cheese. It was beautiful to look at, and delicious. Total comfort food. The serving was also so large that those of us that got it thought we probably should have just ordered a single serving and split it, but we each managed to stuff it in....which unfortunately meant no room for dessert.... To complement our meal, we had a bottle of red wine which was split by 3 of us: our friend who ordered the steak knows wine, so ordered for those of us drinking, and we were very happy with it. One person got a single glass of a dry white wine, and our designated driver got a non-alcoholic beverage. We felt well taken care of by our server and one other person supporting the server. We were all very impressed with the whole evening - the atmosphere, food quality, menu variety, service, and portion size/value - this is a special place that goes on our list of the best of the best in the central NY area. We stayed locally for a few days mostly hiking and seeing the falls. I booked the reservation about a month in advance and really looked forward to the email based on the reviews I saw in various places. I have written a few reviews praising chefs and the meal. This review will encompass those parts, but let me start by saying that I love this restaurant. Farm to table is a common theme in big cities across the US, especially in CA, TX, and NY. Hazelnut Kitchen brings the truth to those words with the menu catered to what they're able to source, locally. And by locally, I mean across the street, down the block at the actual farms where they're getting the veggies, meat, and milk from. Many restaurants say it, but veggies don't taste the same when the farm is 6 hours away from the table it's being served from. The menu was short and sweet, which I believe more restaurants should adhere to. No foodie I have ever met respects a kitchen or chef that claims they can make 30-40 entrees + apps and sides at a high level. This kitchen (open-air) delivers food at an expert, master level that features locally sourced foods that they highlight in their menu choices. If that doesn't get you salivating then not much in a restaurant will. I had decided before going that I was going to have the "let the kitchen decide" entree. I can eat mostly everything except avocados, so after informing the wait staff (also fabulous) that caveat, I waited with anticipation for a few apps and wine. I had the apple & roasted grapes to start with and a fabulous chardonnay. My wife had the squash soup, which she loved. The granola as part of the dish was homemade and tasted like this should be boxed and served as a breakfast cereal, it was that good. The idea of roasted grapes is something that shouldn't be a surprise to me, knowing how often raisins are incorporated into meals, but somehow the roasted grapes in this dish surprised me, delighted me is probably more accurate. For the entree, the surprise was this wonderfully cooked braised rabbit with this homemade pasta and local cheese that came together in such a pleasant way. The braised rabbit was clearly cooked with a red wine that made the flavor burst and created a wonderful smell and gravy for the pasta. I can still smell it. I had the hazelnut butter cake for dessert and asked after tasting it if I can have one to go, yes for breakfast, don't judge me. Hazelnut Kitchen is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The fact that they serve locally sourced food exclusively is like a win-win for everyone. From the nuance of the small menu to the wine selections (locally sourced) to the small and mighty wait staff this will be one of the best meals you will ever eat period, no matter the state or country you are in. I plan on coming back - braving the 6-hour drive from NYC again. But, I have no limits in cost or distance for food. You should make reservations now if you are considering this place. My experience with this restaurant has spanned three owners, each with their own particular sense of culinary interest and commitment to the concept of farm to table and fine dining in the small village of Trumansburg. For a friends birthday four of us decided to take the plunge and order full menus. I made the order directly with the Chef Matt. He was hospitable and humble. Our food was promptly served to us for takeout. As such, I can't speak to the table service. Though as many of the front of the house did not change, including Breanna, as I expect it to be wonderful as always. Breana actually texted me and my fiancé popped over and got the food right on time. The food: we ordered the Schnitzel, the chicken and the Bass. For apps we had the delicata squash, the broccoli rabe and the salmon collar. The chicken was amazing, tender and fresh. Finished with a mint. I had mine dairy free due to an allergy and they served weight a take on home fries, which was incredible. my friend had it with the dairy option and raved about the mashed potatoes. Nothing was too salty or over done. It is likely one of the best chicken meals I have ever had. The schnitzel was reported as "wow, that sauce" incredibly fresh and exciting. The bass, which was original in its presentation, a whole fish, fried and finished with a red sauce. Stupendous. We found the sides to be amazing as well--the brócoli rabe was smoky and had so much flavor to it. The salmon collar, tasty and seasoned to perfection. Since I didn't try the delicata I can't speak to it but I heard everyone was happy. I really am serious when I say this--Hazelnut has now excelled in its reputation and found itself as the best of the best dining experiences in Tompkins County, if not the entire region. Bravo. Waited for menus. Waited for drink order. Waited for appetizer and dinner order. It was casually elegant or unmindful. Glass of red called Rihannon was unpalatable. I added ice and let it water down. An apple cider, ginger nonalcoholic drink was delicious. Beer selection nothing to write home about yet many local choices should be made available. They have a Mystery meal but we were not adventurous (was fried chicken with string bean casserole) that we would have eaten. Oh well. Miso glazed zucchini and eggplant was outstanding. Sweet and savory with crunchy tofu squares. Braised pork shoulder was soft and yummy if a bit too salty. Pasta with sausage and ricotta with blueberries was the winner. Absolutely flavorful and interesting. All portions sizable. Bread with butter served first was a meal in itself. Warm and perfect. Didn't have dessert, had an interesting assortment but nothing that jumped out. About $50 per person with drinks and 2 apps to share: focaccia - yummy. And cheese board was perfect. My wife and I enjoyed a lovely meal for our anniversary that we will remember a long time. It wasn't crowded or noisy early on Thursday night. Our server, Matt, was attentive and timed the arrival of each dish well so we didn't feel rushed. The raw oysters were delicious and the roast oysters were amazing - cooked just enough to unlock the oyster flavor while retaining their tenderness. Tempura delicata squash was, well... like a ballerina. The charred broccoli rabe had a big flavor with nicely managed notes of bitterness and the roast beets had a likewise engaging personality. I don't think the menu's categorization of these dishes as "small" or "smallish" did them justice -- "wow" would have been a more appropriate characterization. Our cod and schnitzel "bigger" dishes that we would normally have applauded as stars had been upstaged by our earlier selections; we were simply too full to really appreciate them, or even consider dessert. Special attention is given to the flavors of each dish. Dense fresh bread with a nicely crisp crust, served with a pumpkin spice butter. Jonah crab salad, green gazpacho, sambal aioli. The aioli had a nice heat to an otherwise lightly flavored dish. Parmesan risotto, brussel sprouts, pepitas. Under cooked risotto was a bit crisp, heavily creamed. Seared duck breast, squash puree, braised greens, bacon, maple jus. Duck was a bit dry and chewy, one piece still held some pink. Maple jus flavor really came out and flavored the dish. Gnocchi carbonara, house cured pork belly, cracked black pepper, golden raisins, mahon cheese. Delicious, raisins added a nice sweet undertone. The pork belly was charred a bit on one side an tasted a bit of butane. Shaved brussel sprouts, corned beef lardons, maple hazelnuts, poached local egg, local greens, apple cider vinaigrette. The egg was perfectly poached. It seemed as though the salad came on a bed of water. If it was the vinaigrette we couldn't tell. Chorizo poutine, fabulous rich gravy, super soft cheese, not so heavy on the chorizo that it overtook the dish. Bread pudding, milk and dark chocolate, dried cranberries, creme anglaise, vanilla ice cream; may favorite, but I'm a sucker for a good bread pudding. The cranberries had plumped and gave a nice savory tart to the sweetness of the pudding. House made donut with mexican hot chocolate, cinnamon ice cream, whip cream. Voted best dessert by the table. Hazelnut butter cake w salted caramel and chocolate hazelnut ice cream. Dry throughout, the nutty crust portion was the best part. Pumpkin spice pot de creme with whipped cream, snicker doodle. Texture and taste were spot on. Everything was kind of hit or miss for whole dishes and parts of dishes. We appreciate the work that went into all of the dishes and the local emphasis but I think we had hyped ourselves up for better execution and bolder flavors. After hearing rave reviews, I finally decided to try Hazelnut Kitchen. To start, I had the fried ferns, which were alright. It said it came with a sweet and sour sauce, but I felt as though it was barely there (3/5). For my entree, I ordered the "Let the Kitchen Decide" and it was a rabbit stew. I thought it was ok, lacking much flavor but an interesting dish (3/5). To finish, I got the hazelnut butter cake, which was probably the best thing there. We ordered the prix fixe takeout menu for New Years Eve, and it was just outstanding. It really made our New Year's special. There are three people in our household, and each order (salad and bread, main course, dessert) was meant for about two people, so we got two orders -- one with each entree (1. pork shoulder with spaetzle, brussel sprouts, cranberry. 2. mushroom risotto.) All of it was so thoughtfully and perfectly done. I was impressed by the way they crafted the menu so that it would travel well and stand up to reheating. Opening all the little containers with different elements of the meal was like opening a bit package of presents in our kitchen! So fun. On top of that, the quality was just fantastic -- perhaps the best risotto I've ever had. This was our first restaurant meal since the pandemic began, and we loved it. I was delighted to hear that they opened up for dine in by the time of our wedding anniversary. I made a reservation a week in advance for a weekday evening. When we got there, they asked us to take our temperature and provided hand sanitizer for the table. We ordered cocktails, which are always good here and they use local spirits. They are only doing a prixe fixed meal at this time and you order all your starter, entree, and dessert at once. It's not listed on the menu, but they had a special that day as well. It happened to be lobster pasta. The green beans with heirloom tomatoes was so delicious, especially the sauce. The lobster pasta was also very good with the mushrooms. This place is for the elite. Prices are so high $47 for a NY Strip steak. My husband didn't like the sauce they put on the steak, this place is NOT customer friendly. I wanted to order there kitchen special, she absolutely would not tell me if it was something I could have as I am diabetic and have breast cancer, she absolutely would not work with me. I did order it and it was pasta with short ribs sweet potatoes and spinach, I can not handle spicy foods and this was very spicy. If you can't afford $100. For a meal for two this place is not for you. This is why we have such division in this world. We will not ever go back. So sad to she this type of service is happening. read more

My wife and I have lived in Ithaca for a few years now and have been hearing good things about Hazelnut Kitchen. Then COVID hit. Now that things are opening up, we decided to make the trip (25min drive). We started with the sunchoke ("Jerusalem artichoke") soup, which was very nice. The roasted hazelnuts in oil, sprinkled on the top were a bit of an unusual, toasty contrast to the soup. Good, but not great. My wife loves steak, so ordered the NY strip, medium-rare. Feeling a bit adventurous, I ordered the "mystery meal." The steak arrived medium, not medium-rare and was slathered with the house's steak sauce; so much so that the flavors of the meat with completely overwhelmed. Not only that, the sauce was far too salty. If we were to order it again, we would definitely ask for the sauce on the side. My "mystery meal" was rabbit meatballs with chopped mixed vegetables and cranberries, on top of gnocchi. The meatballs were coated with a white sauce that, like the steak sauce, was far too salty. So much salt in the food that we drank an entire carafe of water. The desserts, on the other hand, were quite good (hazelnut butter cake and apple crumb cake). The latter would have been better with a dollop of ice cream than with whipped cream. The presentation of the food was very nice. The quality...well, we can do as well in Ithaca for less (Gola Osteria, Mia, Mix, The Rook, among others) and save a 50 minute round trip drive. Epic! An adorable restaurant in Ithica! I was down here for a few days and we were told we must try the food. We got here at about 7pm on a snowy Tuesday and it was surprisingly packed! We had the cheese and meet platter which was a great appetizer to share. We then got the vegetable pasta, braised beef and "let the chef decide" which was a wonderful surprise of slow roasted duck confit on a bed of red cabbage and Italian sausage. The food was all delicious but the only thing I would point out is that we found the food to be extremely salty...which is something that's never really stood out to me at other places. Snagged the last seating time slot for the evening and after a long day of hiking to some amazing NY waterfalls, an even greater meal was definitely needed to cap off the night on a high note! If you can, since they don't take reservations for them, the BEST seats in the house are the 4 tall bar stool seats right in front of the open kitchen! It was great to watch chef and his crew methodically go through the paces of getting each and every order that was placed cooked perfectly, plated beautifully and timely getting it to the table for each guest. This night being the first visit of hopefully many to come, ordered the creamy pepper soup, that was accompanied by a creamy cheesy arancini in the center. Flavors were smoky, creamy with a nice roasted pepper flavor and a little heat too. The rice back really gave the soup a ton of body and texture as well. The Confit Rabbit appetizer was just so succulent and moist! The flavor combos of a bit of wilted spinach, squash puree, toasted (what I thought were) pumpkin seeds with the rabbit really melded so well together. Opted for a 3 choice charcuterie housemade roasted chicken terraine, a pork rillette with duck fat, and fried hake brandade: the chicken terraine had fantastic flavor and an interesting spongey texture to it. The rillette was over the top delicious, the generous dollop duck fat during on top have it such amazing complexity, and the hake brandade was fried to a perfect golden brown and the filling reminded me of a cross btwn an empanada and croquette. For main ordered what they called "let the kitchen decide" a dish the chef comes up on the whim and stays on the menu anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks. This night was a lovely story rib, gnocchi and brussel stories that were sauteed in brown butter and then tossed with a touch of hoisin sauce. I was a little hesitant on the hoisin but man it was exactly what was needed to bring the dish together. The gnocchi were like uber light clouds, just melt in your mouth and the dirt ribs were soft and not mushy or stringy. Ended the evening with their shishito pepper ice cream and a squash ice cream. Both refreshing and delicious. Chef and his kitchen team were really nice to check in on us periodically and I loved how meticulous the communication between the kitchen and FOH was. Nobody missed a beat. So very looking forward to my next visit! read more

A sweet surprise gem in a tiny town. Excellent food. Good service. Interesting cocktail menu. Better to have a reservation in busy season.

Right up there with the last 10* meal that passed my lips at a London eatery in 1984. I ordered The Kitchen's Choice - Perfect Short ribs with a creamy, veggie filled sauce. Have been trying to duplicate the delicious Lemon/Cranberry Chutney served on top of the ribs all week. read more
