Set B and Atlantic Gate roll
Rachel L.

I recently came here again for dinner with some friends! It's a solid and safe spot for sushi. I also tried their miso pasta and it was really creamy. Their sushi taco was crispy and so filling. I got a sushi platter this time to share, it was perfect for a group of four. My least favourite was the deep fried roll. The service is pretty good. The staff are very friendly. I love the tea they serve as well. The space is pretty spacious with comfy seating and a coat rack to hang up your jackets.

I have been loving Hay Sushi lately. We dined there twice in the past month and it has yet to disappoint! The restaurant is spacious and minimalistic and I haven't had a problem getting a seat without a reservation on weeknights. Some of my favourite dishes are: - Creamy Miso Pasta ($23): The sauce is creamy and flavourful and the masago adds a small crunch. My partner liked it so much we have set out to make our own miso pasta at home - Nigiri 12 ($34): I have yet to visit on a weekend so I haven't tried the Omakase Premium Nigiri but the Nigiri 12 is great! The sashimi is fresh and I particularly enjoyed the squid, scallop, ikura and ebi. - Yuzu Salmon Oshi Sushi ($6): The perfect torched bite! 2 pieces go by fast so be prepared to order more

Hay Sushi is my go-to sushi place! I have been here 5 times, and I love it even more since the renovation. The new lighting makes it cozy, the decor is more elegant and they offer more tables than the original one. The fish is always fresh. I always order set dinner menu B (chef selection), as it came with sashimi and sushi. The staff is super friendly, lovely and helpful. There's one time, my friend and I ordered tuna sashimi, it supposed was 5 pieces, but the staff added extra one piece to us for free. If you're looking for great sushi, check it out!

I did give 4/5 I've always ordered takeout from here and decided to dine here with a friend for birthday. There's alot of seating and bar seating, the interior is simple but really modern. The service was really nice and I would say we didn't wait too long for our food. The server was very knowledgeable and super nice. I would recommend getting the platters and we got the B one. It was a pretty good mix to try everything. I do not recommend the crispy tuna roll. the cream cheese is weird. the miso pasta was bomb, as someone who doesn't like pasta. the shrimp a mushroom were a nice touch. Spicy salmon taco was good as well. FYI, I usually get the salmon poke for takeout and it's the best thing ever so would recommend getting that :) also a downside: No free parking depending on the time but have to pay green P

This review is from two visits, the first one I ordered sushi and udon, and the second was sushi and fusion pasta. The sushi was delicious but their creamy miso seafood pasta was the highlight. We got the weekend sushi special it had premium fish. The creamy miso pasta came with generous amount of shrimp and it was plump and cooked perfectly. The udon soup was really basic and i wouldn't recommend it over the pasta. Lobster sushi was huge, along with the other black dragon roll that isn't pictured. The rice to filling ratio is my favourite, minimal rice and more filling. Place is always packed but we walked in both visit and got seats at the bar right away.

Had their Winterlicious menu and it was absolutely amazing! Angela was the cutest and friendliest server/hostess. Super cozy and perfect for a night out!

Cute newly renovated modern sushi spot in North York Area. Believe they just moved a few stores down and the space is minimal and nice. Came here during the summer month and the AC was blasting in here - a little too cold if I'm being honest. But I came here with one thing in mind only which was their nori tacos. Here's what I thought: Spicy salmon nori taco 5/5 - Came with mayo, salmon, crab meat, green onion and cucumber. All wrapped in a fried nori taco shell. I loved this! The flavours and textures were to die for. Tuna nori taco 5/5 - Similar to the spicy salmon nori taco, I loved the texture of this as well. Big chunks of tuna pieces and was absolutely delicious. Creamy miso pasta 4/5 - Delicious, creamy and cooked perfectly with their pasta. It comes with black tiger shrimps and topped with nori and scallion. Truffle aburi 3/5 - This was chef's selection of ten pieces of nigiri, lightly seared with torch and topped with house made truffle aburi sauce. This was definitely a miss since you can't taste the truffle at all. It was good but nothing amazing imo. Overall, I can't wait to come back for the nori tacos they have here. It was absolutely divine and worth a try!

First time dining in! Venue is cute, and sophisticated. Fish quality is great for non-omakase. If you're wanting value, I would recommend going to an ayce place instead. This place is great for catching up with friends or a casual date night. Lunch menu is only available during the weekday, so if you're coming on the weekend for lunch expect the regular dinner menu. Their rolls looked great, would definitely come back to try it.

Restaurant design is very stylish. Choice of chairs are very comfortable and very good looking. The menu covers are made of leather, which tells you that this restaurant pays attention to detail. Level of lighting is perfect for date night. not bright and not harsh, it creates a good mood for relaxation. We went for miso seafood pasta and steak tacos. the miso sauce had perfect consistancy that coats the with just the right amount. The spaghetti was cooked slightly al dente which makes it have some texture to the bite and not all soft. Comes with 4 big shrimp (makes it good for sharing because of even numbers) and some sliced button mushrooms. The steak tacos come with 2 per order (also good for sharing) the shell was made of thick crispy seaweed in the shape of a traditional taco shell. Filling from top to bottom was thinly sliced purple onions and chopped green scallions, then the diced steak was seasoned, charred and cooked well done, and the bottom layer was sushi rice, no sauces but still packing lots of flavour and not dry either. This is the type of restaurant i would keep coming back to just for the atmosphere and the prices are good relative to the quality of food.

Hay Sushi is my go-to since moving to Toronto! (6+ visits!) Great food quality and a really nice, comfortable atmosphere, e.g. the lighting Their Creamy Miso Pasta, Yuzu Salmon Oshi and especially the Spicy Salmon Taco are winners! Been here with small groups and even a big party (check my pics!). Price is a tad higher, sushi pieces tend to be on the smaller side and service is good, not amazing IMO. Sometimes not very attentive and a little rush. Worth checking out for yourself!

Sakura Blossom Rolls and Omakase Premium Nigiri
Aswini K.

I tried the sakura blossom roll ($26.95) and omakase premium nigiri ($37) on a weekend. I really liked the premium nigiri. Everything tasted very fresh. I found the sakura blossom roll a bit too saucy personally. Both dishes were presented beautifully and the interior was very aesthetic too. Our server was pretty friendly too. Overall, I would return to try their other items.

They have a new location! It's more sunny and open than the previous location, but not to worry, the new spot is only 1min away from the old spot. The new spots likes it seats more and has a lot more natural sunlight which makes for a cozy restaurant. We dined during lunch hours on Friday so it was quiet which means we received attentive servers! The quality of everything we order felt fresh and nicely presented. I highly recommend the sushi tacos here, they're crunch and quite filling!

Miso creamy pasta

Amazing service! My favorite was their taco sushi. The miso pasta was good too but the sushi taco is what I will return for!

Where improvement could be made, honestly, is upgrading to an ipad or some sort of ordering system. It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). Location is super convenient near Bay & Dundas, ambiance is very casual, and service is quick.

The fishes were plated very pretty and because it's sushi of course it tasted good. But I was surprised at the level of wasabi that was plated. Cleared up my sinuses for 30 seconds. The establishment is very clean and bright and a great place to head to if you're in a rush.

The space itself leans more modern and clean rather than the typical dark, cozy izakaya vibe, which I actually didn't mind. It felt comfortable, not too loud, and easy to settle into for a slow dinner. We ordered a mix of small plates to share, and everything came out looking nicely put together. The aburi-style salmon sushi was one of the highlights for me.. lightly seared, with a soft texture and just enough flavor on top without being overwhelming. The tuna tataki was also fresh and clean, simple but well done. Some of the fried dishes leaned a bit richer with the creamy sauces, but they were still enjoyable, especially if you're in the mood for something a little more indulgent. The beef fried rice was straightforward but satisfying, one of those dishes that's easy to keep going back to between everything else. The menu is set up to where you pick the entree and then what type of protein you want out of pork loin, chicken, fish, cheese, and sweet potato cheese. I settled on the sweet chili katsu. A piece of chicken arrived on a plate accompanied with rice and shredded cabbage. The chicken was breaded in a light panko like crumb and was half covered in the sweet chili sauce. I ate a couple of pieces and the crisp texture and flavor was wonderful. I had a bite of rice and when I got to the cabbage to my dismay I found a long piece of hair in it. I immediately lost my appetite and all I could think about was how great the two bites of chicken was. I gave up the plate and showed the staff what I found. They offered another plate a couple of times and after I declined a refund was issued. Katsuya. sucks for serving me one of the best pieces of breaded chicken in my life with hair in the food. I'm struggling to hold back the tears now as I write. I did get to try the parmesan fries which were ok. I also tasted the udon which is not one of their stronger dishes. This probably would have been five stars had it not been for the hair. I know this happens on the rare occasion but probably shouldn't if hair nets are worn. If you do try out this place, expect great katsuya.
