    Dead silkie :(
    Karen H.

It's not a bad store in general. Went to chick days with my son and grandson had a good experience. Unfortunately, my silkie died in less than 24 hrs. I called Hawthorne's they said maybe give it electrolytes. I went to a closer feed store to buy it. The feed store said they just had another customer complaining about one of their chicks from Hawthorne's not doing well. I called again after the chick died and was told the only thing I could do is go back and BUY a different type. This was a huge disappointment. The other chicks we bought are doing great! Many other places have a 48 hr window. Do better Hawthorne's.

I'm only giving stars for the inventory and convenience of our little town. However. They order way too many ducklings and chicks. The last couple of times we've been there, they've had a lot of chickens and ducks that just looked horrible. To the point where we wanted to take them all home. (If we had the space we would). The last time we visited the store, all of the pullets and cockerels were in horrible shape. Missing a ton of feathers, some bleeding from their bare butts. These babies are all thrown into over crowded runs once they're fully feathered and out of the brooders. We ended up asking to take one home because it had been bullied so bad that it only had feathers on its wings. The employee said that they had put them in the bigger run and they were bullied so bad that they had to put them back into the brooder. We took the naked one home. They asked if we wanted the other one in bad shape, and my husband declined. However, when he got home and opened the box, we found both of the injured babies in there. So they snuck a chicken we didn't ask for, into the box. Now here we are, one teen with hardly any feathers and the other with a bare butt who can't even walk. Which is fine, he needs more help than we originally thought so it was fate. We had to syringe feed the one that can't walk and thankfully he's getting better, but are now going to treat for coccidiosis. Definitely paralyzed for the time being. Hoping not mareks for our flocks sake, although these two are in quarantine. We are committed to getting these babies in better health because of the terrible conditions they came from. I will add that two deceased babies were pulled out of the brooder yesterday because a customer had mentioned it. So In conclusion, it's a great feed store. But they really need better conditions for their babies that don't get adopted. Maybe not order so many?? There isn't enough room in the runs for the amount of chickens they have so they're just pecking each other to death. I hate talking bad on any of our local businesses, but this isn't fair to the chickens and ducks they sell.

    So cute!!

Over the past year everytime I go in they are out of yet another item. Very little Inventory now to choose from to where i now shop elsewhere for supplies. There is a Thick layer of dust all over the products and shelves. We had previously gotten chicks here in 2025, so when ready for new batch for 2026 went back to Hawthorne. My kids left in tears! There were chicks getting out of their bins and running all over the store. Chicks were hopping from bin to bin so the breeds were getting mixed up so no clue what chick was what. There were dead chicks in the bins , and lots of chicks bleeding, saw one with broken wing and couple with deformed/broken beaks. it was very heartbreaking to see. Nothing at all like it was when we came here in 2025 to get chicks. I felt horrible for all those babies, we rescued two chicks. Within 48hrs of having them home one passed away. The store was nice and let us get a replacement chick for one that died. Got that chick home and settled in. Next morning I check on the chicks abd see bloody poop in the pen. The chicks, most likely are infected with Coccidiosis, so had to run out get medication to hopefully be able to save these two babies. Never again will I step foot into this place. Sad to see the state they keep their birds in now a days.

I dropped in to check it out and Deer Springs Feed & Supply had exactly what I needed. They also had other things that I have appreciated picking up over the years, such as; solid toys for power chewers, horse shampoo for a shiny coat and barn jackets perfect for travel. Fast forward to the days of COVID. I had a lot to accomplish one day and I was heading to the gas station on my way home. I didn't quite make it and pulled in outside the shop. The owner appeared and assisted. I was quite embarrassed but the owner was kind. He ran to get a gas can and filled my car with a quarter tank of gas. I tried to give him money, but he would not take it. This was at a time when gas prices were on the rise. I was so appreciative of the kindness I received. I will always be a customer of this business because of this good deed. Sometimes I just stop by to purchase some dog treats or people treats from the fridge. This is a family run business and they really care about animals, people and their community. Not only did they help me as a citizen but they support causes such as the Teri Campus of Life down the road. Thanks Deer Springs Feed & Supply for your help that day and for services you provide to all.
