I like coming here for dog and chicken food. Love that it was taken over by the Hawthorne family from Escondido. They are always so informative with my questions about chicken stuff as I'm a new chicken mom. Love their items that are holiday based - super cute things at great prices- even with everything super expensive nowadays. Worth it! Love their Pendleton items too! I can spend all day in this place and sometimes I do- I'm sure I'm annoying to the staff but they're all still very nice people and helpful. Most ppl don't know but they also sell vaccines and have the mobile vaccine people come monthly for puppies and kittens. Super convenient and affordable. When they don't have a food item that I hear about online, I ask and they usually are able to order it for me. Love it here! read more

This review is actually for the Fallbrook and the Escondido location and based solely on their chicks that they sell. We have personally bought an uncountable number of chicks over the years from online hatcheries and feed stores never even losing one, however this year we bought chicks from Hawthorne, both Fallbrook and Escondido for the first time. Many of the chicks were ill and had pasty butt. It's the first time we had to sign a paper at the register stating that the chicks may die and it is not their problem. With all that said for the first time we lost multiple chicks no matter how hard we tried to prevent that. It may be that the hatchery is responsible for some of this, but Hawthorne is directly responsible for not taking care of their chicks when they are in the store 100%. there were multiple with failure to thrive and that's probably based on the hatchery. read more

It's not a bad store in general. Went to chick days with my son and grandson had a good experience. Unfortunately, my silkie died in less than 24 hrs. I called Hawthorne's they said maybe give it electrolytes. I went to a closer feed store to buy it. The feed store said they just had another customer complaining about one of their chicks from Hawthorne's not doing well. I called again after the chick died and was told the only thing I could do is go back and BUY a different type. This was a huge disappointment. The other chicks we bought are doing great! Many other places have a 48 hr window. Do better Hawthorne's. read more

they sold me the wrong chicks. the employees sold me oriental chickens when I specifically asked for egg producing chickens. most of the chicks had pasty butt due to the stress this store caused them. one of them had crop impacting due to them not feeding their chicks and allowing them to eat the bedding. due to their incompetency I now am stuck caring for a flock of stupid oriental chickens (low egg production) for the next 5-10 years. thanks for nothing. owner and staff have refused to acknowledge their mistakes and laugh about it when called out. They are living animals and they should be treated with more respect. It's highly irresponsible. read more

I am now a customer for life. In the past I would call around for pricing and chase a few cents on my organic chicken feed which has really gone up since Covid. But through a series of coincidences yesterday, I needed advice not once, while I was in the store and was blown away by the helpfulness on questions about my cats but again later in the day when I was really stumped with a chicken question. Of course the conversation was pre-empted by see a vet, but the hand of experience offers a lot of wisdom and you just can't put a price on that. I appreciate that they are willing to help the average person by sharing their experience with their own animals. Awesome and great feed store. When you start to order feed there they get your information in their system and get all your information stored and then all you have to do is call and place your order and it's dropped... it's the Amazon of the feed world love love love it The people who work there are knowledgeable, and they have great prices. I've checked around the local area so I know their prices are good. They're close to my house so that's helpful but I would shop elsewhere if their prices were more expensive. They have items from horses...to chicks ...so they have decorative items and just so many items in the store plus they can order a lot of stuff ...it's a great resource If you live in the local Fallbrook area I really recommend this place go there peeps read more

Love this store! A great local establishment with knowledgeable and helpful staff. If they are out of something, they'll let you know when it will be in or order it for you. Also, they are amazingly respectful of the disabled, and even people with medical limitations resulting in mask exemptions. I'm only giving stars for the inventory and convenience of our little town. However. They order way too many ducklings and chicks. The last couple of times we've been there, they've had a lot of chickens and ducks that just looked horrible. To the point where we wanted to take them all home. (If we had the space we would). The last time we visited the store, all of the pullets and cockerels were in horrible shape. Missing a ton of feathers, some bleeding from their bare butts. These babies are all thrown into over crowded runs once they're fully feathered and out of the brooders. We ended up asking to take one home because it had been bullied so bad that it only had feathers on its wings. The employee said that they had put them in the bigger run and they were bullied so bad that they had to put them back into the brooder. We took the naked one home. They asked if we wanted the other one in bad shape, and my husband declined. However, when he got home and opened the box, we found both of the injured babies in there. So they snuck a chicken we didn't ask for, into the box. Now here we are, one teen with hardly any feathers and the other with a bare butt who can't even walk. Which is fine, he needs more help than we originally thought so it was fate. We had to syringe feed the one that can't walk and thankfully he's getting better, but are now going to treat for coccidiosis. Definitely paralyzed for the time being. Hoping not mareks for our flocks sake, although these two are in quarantine. We are committed to getting these babies in better health because of the terrible conditions they came from. I will add that two deceased babies were pulled out of the brooder yesterday because a customer had mentioned it. So In conclusion, it's a great feed store. But they really need better conditions for their babies that don't get adopted. Maybe not order so many?? There isn't enough room in the runs for the amount of chickens they have so they're just pecking each other to death. I hate talking bad on any of our local businesses, but this isn't fair to the chickens and ducks they sell. read more

We're new in town, almost 2 years now, and still finding our way but luckily a local pointed us in the direction of The Hawthorne Country Store for our dog food needs. We don't have a ranch or livestock other than our two pups but wanted to support a local business. We have 2 dogs, one 8 yrs old and the other 6 mos. we needed a good quality food to suit both their needs. Our older dog was just severely ill with pancreatitis and having trouble with food. I went in and the manager here was very kind in helping me learn about the different brands available and providing us samples to try. Granted we have done this at other stores before but it can all get a little gimmicky with so many options. This felt like no nonsense good choices. Well, we got a brand that both dogs love! No more upset tummies, and for the first time in years our older one doesn't need mix ins or enticements to eat. As a pet owner, maybe someone else can relate to finding a reasonably priced food that is both healthy (no fillers and grains) and well received. Such a relief!! Also I love their selection of canning jars!! I use them to store my pantry goods, as Tupperware, and for juice and smoothies. They have the best selection around. I really enjoy my trips here, the kind service, and a quick visit with the pigs out front. I know this sounds like a paid for review but I assure you, it's not. Just a happy customer that believes in supporting small local businesses. It's through Yelp that I often find where to go, especially in an unfamiliar town so good reviews for good service are appreciated. read more

What happened to NETTIE???? I love this place, close to home, they carry all my brands for my dogs and horses but Nettie makes the place worth going to, she always has a smile, is always helpful and knowledgeable and you always leave happy because if she doesn't have what you are looking for she'll get it for you and call you when it arrives. Buddy misses her terribly and so do all the customers. I'm afraid if she doesn't come back soon people will go elsewhere as it is a ways out of town and rather hard to get in and out of on that busy road. So my my family went there for the first time today and saw they had a bunch of books on sale for $1. We picked out a bunch of them and brought them to the counter. The lady at the counter all of a sudden told me the books were not on sale and they would be full face value. The sale was yesterday and they forgot to take the sign down and only told me they would give me a 50% off. I will not go back to this place since they will not honor what they had placed. Hawthorn country store is the absolute best !!! A few months back we went in and got 20 baby chicks , they are big loving fun chickens now and feeding my kiddos breakfast with their eggs now ! The feed is always the best quality and CHEAP ! I'm always welcomed with happiness and smiles . Abby who works the front is so knowledgeable and goes above and beyond for her costumers . The yard guys especially the bearded one are so helpful and will load your car with a smile and great attitude. Great place! It feels like "Cheers" when we go in, the staff always remembers us and are all friendly and helpful. Loading our cars in the heat, close to closing time always with a smile! We have been getting our supplies and feed there for the horses. We met the owner on one of our deliveries and he was great! However, we might start buying our hay at another feed store...Our most recent deliver charge went from $15 to $25 which really seems steep considering we live less than 5 miles away and others in the area charge $15 for that distance. Maybe they will reconsider this cost increase, it adds up! read more

My fiancé and I are new to the area and were told about this place froma client of ours. We were down in Escondido and decided to stop by. This is a very cute lstore and as far as selection of horse tack goes as well as riding clothes this place has it all! They have a nice selection of used saddles and a very nice selection of tack. Would recommend this place to all of our clients. We get our feed from a closer feed store in Vista, where we live. But as far as other equipment goes, nowhere we've found beats this place! read more

Until recently I had been having adequate service as they are the only local company that get the shavings that I use. Apparently now however I cant get the shavings unloaded where I need them... yep... I have 2 barns on the property and one indoor main barn uses the finer shavings, so I would want those shavings in that barn, and the breezeway barn uses the heavier shavings and I want those put in that barn... Apparently they can only unload into one spot and some yabber about we have to be able to get within 3-4 feet of the truck. The driver was an unpleasant gentleman whom I do not wish to engage with again. I am so sorry Hawthorne, I want to love you and use you as you are close to my barn, but this latest delivery snafu makes it impossible as I need the deliveries to go into the correct barns. Also, there was no discussion on resolving the problem...just NOPE, NOPE, NOPE. Wishing you the best. read more
