I have never been treated so poorly in my life, as I was at this location tonight. The young girl at the window couldn't have been more brazenly irritated that I'd asked to see the difference between a small and large cup! I was polite and short, I never gave her any trouble.. yet she took this nasty tone with me, glaring eyes, she slammed the window in my face and again after I paid! I was appalled. If I were manager she would have been fired on the spot. I thought, surely it wasn't because she was so busy.. at 8 o'clock on a Tuesday night in December.. we all have bad days, but I've worked in the restaurant industry for years and have never treated someone like that. I've also had plenty of bad service in the past, sure.. but THIS is the first time I've ever taken time out to write a bad review. I hope the manager will address this. Went to Hawksies for the 1st time today & it won't be the last! Ordered a medium cookie dough & moose tracks in a bowl w peanut butter sauce. The serving size was HUGE, so this ended up being my lunch. It was the best moose track I've had. The cookie dough was very good also. Hubby was crazy about the strawberry cheesecake he got! So, my wife and I live in Boston and rarely if ever find an excuse to make it to NH. However, we were visiting friends in the Salem area and stopped at Hawksie's for a little dairy refreshment. Whoa! That's all I can say about the selection. So many flavors to choose from. We ended up getting frozen yogurt that tasted just like real ice cream! So good!!! The place was clean and the staff friendly. During our visit the owner happened to be there. He has big plans for Hawksie's; I can't wait to see. Quite possibly the worst milkshake/frappe ever. Like everyone else in New England my wife and I asked for milkshakes. What we received was a large glass of semi-flavored milk in a styrofoam cup. My wife went back up to tell them this isn't what we wanted and she was told that she should have ordered a frappe. So they proceeded to gives us two frappes and upcharged the difference. The frappes were gross. No real vanilla or coffee flavoring. They were only slightly thicker than the glasses of milk they first gave us and called them shakes. So for 18 dollars we got two frappes and two scoops of chocolate ice cream for our daughter. We will never go back and will defintely tell our friends not to bother either. Honestly, you could get a better shake at McDonalds. Oh sorry, frappe. read more

The owner here is not the nicest, to put it lightly. I went with some of my friends after school one day and we all got ice cream and were talking. I was sitting on the end in a chair because there wasn't enough room for me to sit. The staff didn't have a problem with this until the owner came out and took the seat and said to everyone would have to squeeze in and said I couldn't sit there. His request was impolite to put it mildly. There was nobody else there at the time and it wasn't busy AT ALL. Now, I completely understand people have their ways, but then the staff should've told me in the first place that I couldn't sit there. Another time when I went there with my cross country team, all the booths were full except one even though our coach had planned this and told the place we were going to be there. There were probably 20 of us, so most of us had to stand as we couldn't all fit into that one "open" "available" booth. If you want good ice cream in Salem, I'd recommend just going to Peach Tree Farms. The staff is friendly, they have a great view of the golf course nearby, and they even have goats! read more

I've been going to this place for years all year round even during blizzards. The ice cream is super fabulous! They use Richardsons ice cream which has a high butterfat content and the reason it is so good. They give you a good portion and the prices are reasonable. They have regular ice cream, nonfat frozen yogurt and soft serve. The only thing you have to watch for is sometimes they give you the nonfat frozen yogurt instead of ice cream and it is just not the same. But do try this place. You'll be addicted! read more

Blech. this used to be Glenn's Kreme and Cone and was where I got ice cream on my bike a s a kid. Small sizes at Hampton Beach prices. The service is awful, not a slam to the high school kiddos that work here, but to the new owner who hides in the back until he hears the bell ring and the change jingling in your pockets. He''s an odd duck for sure. As the place shares it's tables with Sammy J's, he'll put out signs on the tables on his side that says "for ice cream customers only" at noon when the place doesn't open until 1. He'll also chase the kids walking home from the middle school like an old man going after the frisbee someone threw on his lawn and the kids mess with him because of it. That small bit of entertainment and watching the vein throb in his forehead while I'm eating lunch at Sammy's is the best thing about this place. read more

This place was great back when it used to be Glenn's Kreme and Kone, however since the new owner has taken over it's gone downhill. The scoops have gotten significantly smaller - a small used to be worth the trip but now its virtually a sample - yet the prices have gotten beyond exorbitant. It's $3.75 for 1.5 scoops of ice cream. That's virtually beach prices! I was a regular of Glenn's, and continued over to Hawksies, but have recently stopped going. They change their hours pretty frequently and I got tired of showing up at 9:02 and being denied service because "everything has been cleaned." Hard to blame the Jr. High girl just trying to do her job here, but frustrating nonetheless. This place will always be there because of the location and the great reputation Glenn built up for it, but I'll take the extra 5 minute drive across town to Peach Tree Farm on Brady Avenue for the same ice cream at better prices and friendly owners who always say hello. read more

I stood in their establishment for 15 minutes while the people working there either talked to themselves or on the phone. They knew I was there but made absolutely no effort to serve me. I wanted a single scoop of ice cream to eat as I finished my walk home from work but I find it offensive that nobody could be bothered to help the only customer in the ice cream section. I mean, even a simple, "be right with you" would have sufficed but I got nothing along those lines. Honestly, not even a single word was said to me. That's just bad form, especially in the food service industry. I will not recommend this place to anybody based on the sheer rudeness of the employees. Judging from the other reviews, the ice cream is good (wish I could have tried it) but what is the point if you're not going to get a level of service befitting a well established eatery such as Hawksies? This place still has my favorite ice cream flavor but everything has been going downhill for a few years now, probably since Glenn sold the place. The prices keep going up as the sizes go down. The service is not great either. A few times there has been a line inside without one at the outside windows and the workers at the windows say you can go outside so they can help you rather than helping you inside. Usually if I am inside it is because it is hot outside or there are mosquitoes everywhere, frequently both. It seems strange that they can't just walk over to the counter and take my order. read more

went here today after mini-golfing nearby. we both got "large" watermelon slushes.. which were a small anywhere else. I thought they were good.. there were a few ice clumps but whatever. The place is big, a bunch of tables. It is cash only, but there is an ATM inside that you can use, although it is slower than anything. They have a large ice cream selection, especially in the summertime, and their portion sizes are HUGE! I really love this place. They have a very large variety of flavors including some hard to find ones like my favorite "Coffee Kahlua Brownie". I was in there just yesterday and noticed that they are in the middle of some renovations so I'm excited to see their new dining room. I noticed they've received a less than great review on here and I am very suprised by that because I've always had such good experiences. When I was there yesterday I didn't have quite enough money to pay for my order and the owner told me not to worry about it, and this is typical there because I've seen them do this before with some of the junior high kids from the Woodbury school that's just down the street. The service here is great and the new flavors Apple crisp and pumpkin are yummmy. The staff and owner are supper friendly and I go there almost twice a week. I don't mind paying for great service and high quality ice cream , you get what you pay for . I go to a lot of icecream places and this is now me and my daughters favorite. BIG FAN! I've been going here for years and it keeps getting better. They're always adding new things I love that they stay open ALL WINTER LONG. They give a very big portion at a very fair price and unlike most other places in the area the price is always "tax included" which makes a big difference. I'm an ice cream-aholic so I've tried all of the local places and they're all good but none of them have the selection of Hawksie's, most of them don't have indoor seating like Hawksie's, and none of them are open in the winter like Hawksie's so for me there's simply no comparison. They're open til 9pm in the offseason and 10pm in the summer and there have been many time that I've showed up after closing and they were nice enough to serve me. The staff is always friendly and the property is always very clean so I honestly can't say anything bad about this place except they make it hard for me to stay on my diet...LOL. read more
