The double-hull canoe tour was definitely the highlight of our Oahu trip!!! This tour is good for adults, kids, newbies, and experienced canoe-ers. Tour takes a little over 2.5 hours. First, the shop is located in a big shopping center plaza (same plaza as Kona Brewery). You kind of have to go to the back towards the water to find it. There is a big parking lot, but arrive early so that you can find parking - it can get tough in the middle of the day. I corresponded with Lisa via email to book our tour and she was always prompt with responses and very friendly and accommodating. Once we arrived, everyone was very nice and helpful. Nobie led us on the tour, which included a short lesson about the canoe and how to row properly. Nobie is awesome! You can tell that he is very passionate about canoeing and knows a lot. After you learn about canoeing, Nobie will lead you onto the canoe. You work as a team and go into the ocean. The day we went, the water was gorgeous!!! So many different shades of blue. You get to stop at a certain point in the ocean and jump off of the canoe. You'll canoe out some more and head back to the shop after a couple of hours at sea. While you are canoeing, Nobie will tell you the history of Hawaii - probably my favorite part of the tour. He's super knowledgeable and really makes the tour great. Nobie takes pictures along the way. At the end of the tour, you can buy them for $30. It's totally worth it because of the quality of the pictures. We have been to Oahu many times but this is the first time canoeing! I was a little nervous b/c I am not a good swimmer but Lisa was very comforting on the phone and assured me that the water is calmed and with a life jacket, I would be ok . I was also worried that being on the water so long that it made me sick but I decided to give It try and boy am I glad I did! Nobe, our tour guide was not only entertaining but he was also educational. He shared with us the history of Hawaii and even a little about his family. This made the trip special. Canoeing is a team sport and everyone gets to help out. The view from the canoe was awesome! Even our teenagers smile and that is priceless! They brought us out on a boat to a surfing location where the waves were 2-3 feet high. We each had turns "catching the wave". By the second run, my daughter could stand on the board and rode it in. We had a wonderful time with Hawaiian Surf Adventures. They were very through and professional and even arranged for our surf lesson to be on another day due to weather conditions. They were very understanding when I had to switch from being a "surf lesson attendee" to an "observer". My boyfriend and best friend had a wonderful time learning to surf with Tom. He was caring, encouraging, extremely knowledgeable and a great teacher. They both walked away excited and ready to surf next year! If you purchased ahse a GROUPON, you will have to pay the non-local/non-resident fee and fee per person when you book online. So expect to pay about 6 dollars each person plus tax etc. Which I think sucks, but whatever! You do not need to pay this fee again when you get there, so make sure you mention that and show them your receipt so you dont pay double! Went on a double hull canoe tour. It was a great experience. Our guide was very informative and also laid back. I would recommend this canoe tour for anyone who would like to see the view from the ocean on in. I attended a special event being hosted by IDcard (Island Discount). A group of us did the double-hulled canoe paddling adventure. Nobi (aka Randon) was our guide, and he was fabulous. Made everyone feel comfortable paddling with his very thorough orientation to paddling instruction before we even left the store. Nobi was also quite handy with Hawaiian history, and he proceeded to drop little nuggets of history throughout the excursion. Made for a much more interesting paddle--especially considering most of us were working our butts off to keep the canoe moving. I'll mention also that there was a young girl (around 5 years old) on our trip. Nobi was incredibly attentive to this fact, and he made sure this little keiki was comfy in the canoe, and that her mother was aware that he was fully capable of keeping a close eye on her. He even gave her a shorter paddle, sized perfectly for her little body. Nobi brought a waterproof camera on the trip, and he was always snapping photos of the adventurers. This makes for a nice photo CD that you can purchase after your adventure (I bought the CD because I didn't have a camera that I trusted myself to keep dry). My only lament is that this was one of those waterproof go-pro cameras. Really cool for getting action shots, but because there's no viewfinder on these cameras, you're never really sure if you're capturing what you're intending to capture in the frame. Many of Nobi's pics could have used some better composing. But I suppose that's a limitation of the camera, not so much the photographer. Bring your own waterproof camera if you want (1) better-composed pics and/or (2) to avoid having to purchase the photo CD. The paddling was as I expected: tough at times and easy at other times. Listen to Nobi's instructions and pay attention to the rhythm of the paddlers and you'll do just fine. And don't forget to soak in the history of this majestic and spiritual place called O'ahu. All in all, I'd say you're getting a great time for a reasonable price. Do please tip your guides, though. They do work hard here to make sure you have a good time, and they're here to help you have fun. And after your adventure, have a good lunch at one of the fine eateries in the Hawai'i Kai Shopping Center. Happy paddling and a hui hou! read more

FOR DA LOCALS I bought the Groupon because I enjoyed paddling out to the sandbar as a kid in Kaneohe. My boyfriend and I are local ~ and really really enjoyed the double hull canoe excursion. Plus I'd rather paddle in Maunalua Bay rather than ...theAlawaiorKeehiLagoon*cough* I was a little worried because all of the reviews were from out-of-towners but don't fret. Nobi is an amazing story teller - EVEN IF YOU'RE FROM HERE, YOU'LL LEARN A LOT. I'm pretty sure you don't remember a lot from your Hawaiian History class at UH anyway. I really liked that Nobi let us know about getting Croakies as to not lose our sunglasses AND asked if anyone in the group had plans after the tour- so he knew if he had to keep the tour on a strict timetable or if we had wiggle room. We ended up staying until 5, probably because we asked a lot of questions and played in the water. I appreciate that Nobi gives an authentic view of our islands to the visitors that were on the tour- it's not a prepackaged Aulani or PCCC plastic luau feel- his message of aloha, island life and history are the real deal. The bottom line: if you want to get in touch with your inner Hawaiian, this tour is great for tourists, great for locals and a good deal. I had a Groupon for the double-hull canoe tour that was about to expire so I called them up. They were super nice on the phone and got me in on the following Saturday. I received an email confirmation and a reminder email a couple of days before (always appreciated). Good thing the email contained detailed instructions on how to get to the shop, because it was a little tricky to find (marina side at Koko Marina Shopping Center, near Zippy's). Sasha, who checked us in, was very nice. It thought it was a little weird that they charged tax on top of the Groupon (I use a lot of Groupons and haven't run across that before) but I didn't mind paying an extra $4 (and they told me about it when I called to make the reservation). It was my first time in a canoe (same for the other 10 people in our group), but the instructor was awesome. He was so friendly and went through all the details of how to hold the paddle and perform the strokes in the most efficient manner. The whole tour was a pretty nice pace. Training was thorough, but not too long. We didn't rush to board the canoe (he made sure everyone was comfortable). We paddled out to "open ocean", stopping a few times to take breaks. On some of the breaks he encouraged folks to jump in the water and swim around (it was too cool and windy for me to wanna do that though!) and some people did. The water is SO clear and the views are beautiful. Wish I'd taken more pictures. The instructor talked a lot about the history of Hawaii and how our islands came to be. Very interesting! I've lived here most of my life, but I still learned a lot. (I hadn't read the Yelp reviews so the history lesson was a surprise!) I wish I'd known ahead of time that we were likely to run long (we got back 30 minutes late) because some friends were baby-sitting my kids at a nearby beach and I couldn't call them to let them know we would be late. Wow! I live on Oahu and bought a Groupon for when my son visited. We enjoyed the canoe experience. So much fun, and Nobi was a wonderful tour guide and instructor. We learned more about our islands then I ever had, and really had fun paddling. Wife got us a Groupon for a two-hour canoe tour, which actually turned into a three-hour canoe tour. If you're going on the canoe tour, be advised that this is not a sit-back-and-enjoy-the-view sort of tour -- you are going to have to work for it! This was perhaps even more so in our case, as we had the minimum number of people (6) that they would take out, and it was a bit on the windy side. Despite the exertion (and the sore back the next day!), this was a great experience. Once we had paddled out into the bay, we were able to do a little swimming, and then our guide gave us a lesson on how the islands were formed (I'll never look at Oahu on a map the same way!), and the rich heritage of the Hawaiian people. This was definitely the most educational calorie burn I've ever experienced! read more

The Good: great customer service, good surf instructor, and they take you on a boat out beyond the reach of the surfers by the beach; definitely not very crowded. The Bad (and the reason for the 2-stars): out near the waves you can be fully submerged in the ocean.. however, the waves end right on top of the reefs.. you have 1-2 ft. of water between you and the coral/rocks/sea urchin, etc... yes, they warn you about how to fall in the water but as a beginner, it is often difficult to control... several people on our trip got cuts and bruises from the coral as well as some sea urchin in the skin. Nothing serious but I would not recommend this for first time surfers (like myself)... you will get scratched up... and potentially get hurt even more seriously... The Ugly: unfortunately I wiped out early on and was scraped up by the coral; although I wanted to go all out and catch the waves, I ended up being more wary about the coral so I would get back down on the board sooner than I would have wanted = not a great experience Maybe if you go during high tide it may be less of a concern but just be careful. read more

We had a wonderful time in our SUP lessons. Our guide was patient, helpful, and very positive. It was a little bit of a workout, but nothing that was too taxing. I don't exercise much and I was able to do everything just fine with only a little bit of soreness the next day. Our lesson had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather, and they were able to get us in quickly and with very little hassle. I was also very appreciative for the company looking out for not only our safety, but also making sure we got the most out of our lesson. This was a great experience for us and we fully plan on sharing this with any friends/family who come to visit! read more

Im giving this 5-stars because Nobi did a very good and thorough job with my family on our Outrigger trip. He made our time very enjoyable, fun, and educating! Everyone at the shop was very helpful and prepared us before we went on the ocean. They made sure we had water, sunscreen, life jackets (if needed), and a thorough knowledge of what to do while on the trip. One thing to note is it is enduring and does take some energy & strength to paddle out. Be aware of this. I liked the excersise but I imagine some people might not feel the same. For years, I've admired Stand-up Paddleboarders from the shore. Whether gliding across calm water or surfing massive waves, this graceful sport left me thinking, "I've got to try that sometime"! Friends encouraged me to rent a board and learn on my own, but being athletically challenged and also a chicken, I decided to wait until a professional company partnered with Groupon instead. Glad I did--it gave me the chance to work with the terrific crew at Hawaiian Surf Adventures for my very first SUP lesson! From the first point of contact setting up the lesson appointment through the end of today's lesson, I was impressed with everyone's professionalism, graciousness, and patience. We were slightly delayed arriving to our lesson thanks to Hawaii's notorious congestion on the H1 and road construction, and when we called to explain the situation, they took it in stride--no worries. (We are really happy they allowed us to do the lesson at all, since they told us after the fact that we were the only two signed up!) We were blessed with a beautiful day for our inaugural paddle. Randon (aka "Nobe-wan Kenobi") was our instructor. He patiently covered all the basics of SUP, repeated instructions as needed, and gave positive feedback as we began to get the hang of it. The two-hour lesson format was enough time to get to the site, unload the gear, go through all the basic techniques, give us plenty of practice time, and get back to the starting point. It left us ready for more another day instead of wearing us out completely. When we returned to the shop, we were offered digital photos at extra cost that Randon had taken with a pocket sized camera. My friends and I bought a Groupon for the double-hull canoe excursion for 2 people. We had a third person with us and they gave us a deal on the third person which was very nice of them. Nobie was really knowledgeable and passionate about his culture. The instructions he gave for rowing were easy to follow. I learned a lot about Hawaii from this activity! Tip: There isn't room for any bags on the canoe so you can leave it in your car or they will lock it up in the store for you. I was here with my fiancee around December. We did the stand up paddle and the canoe tour. I highly recommend the canoe tour. Overall, Hawaiian Surf Adventures did a great job in accommodating us. Lovely staff members. Remember to bring sun block - it is a must unless you are immune to UV rays. Stay hydrated as well. Our tour guide, Nobi, did a fantastic job in taking us around and explaining the history of Hawaii. I'm a big history nerd and I can tell you Nobi knows his stuff. I remember spending at least half an hour just talking to him about history. Once you walk out of the tour, you will gain a deep appreciation for Hawaii. Nobi, I do not know if you remember us. My hubby and I wanted to do a physical excursion in the water, so we found a great groupon for Hawaiian Surf Adventures. We elected to do the double canoe ride which was a workout, but really fun and informative. We were out on the water for about two hours and our guide was Lissa, who was a great instructor and really sweet. We had about six adults on our tour, and one child. We had a good group that was really interested in the stories and history Lissa shared with us. I've been on a lot of these tours/excursions and I can tell you that the tour guide can make or break this experience for the tourists. Lissa was great. The conditions were perfect on the day we went out. There were low winds and it was sunny, but not too hot. It was beautiful. We did our test run in the canals of Hawaii Kai, then we made our way over to Moanalua Bay, which was pretty cool. I am ashamed to say I've never really explored Moanalua Bay, but it really pretty and provides great views of Hawaii Kai. Lissa was a great tour guide and spoke a lot about the history of the Hawaiian Islands and the Hawaiian people. It is a great story for people to hear because Hawaii is definitely not all mai tais and luaus. There is a rich history filled with traditions and turmoil that most people don't bother to learn. I enjoyed the history lesson a lot. We saw a turtle pop its head out of the water during our tour, and we learned how to properly paddle. It was fun and while we did get our moments to rest, it was a great workout. You can't coast on this excursion. Everyone needs to paddle and contribute to the cause. Loved the double rigger canoe trip! Nobi was very informative & passionate about native history and culture, and as we paddled in the traditional double-rigged canoe he built, we learn about the history of the island and the peoples that inhabit it. The cultural aspect really enriched the trip - elevating it from an average, I'm-a-tourist-in-Hawaii kind of thing, to a history lesson and a lesson in respecting ways of the past. He was a great teacher - patient with those that had trouble keeping the rhythm, and made the experience really fun. The tour lasted about 45 minutes longer than scheduled, so I don't recommend it if you are a tight schedule, but it's definitely worth while. We had the chance to swim which tied to a bouy out in the bay and saw several sea turtles near our canoe. The surf shop is hidden on the backside (facing the marina) of a strip mall on the outskirts of Honolulu. We had a bit of trouble finding it with our Garmin directions, but the staff was really friendly and laid back when we checked in. We used a Travelzoo voucher that made the trip 1/2 price, but I think it'd be worth full price (I thinks it's ~$48?) to get a great history lesson from a native Hawaiian trained in the traditions of his ancestors. We really loved it and it was great way to finish off our trip to Hawaii. read more

We came in for the SUP class and tour. Our instructor Matt was great, really calmed my terrified inlaw and yes I was abit nervous too...but 10 min later we were good to go, I can't believe we were nervous at all. It was an amazing experience and i now can't wait to get my own board. Matt was great, he took a million pics at my request and I in turn taught him what a plank was :) and so the whole group ended up planking for about 30secs. Really friendly staff!! Awesome time! The HSA team was so nice and very professional. I took my two nephews (ages 14 and 12) and niece (10) out for a two-hour surfing lesson and they had an amazing time. The instructors were super-nice to the kids, covered a lot, and really made sure they had a fun time. They were all standing by the second wave and were smiling ear-to-ear the entire lesson. The surf spot, out in Maunalua Bay, is beautiful with virtually no other surfers. You see Diamond Head on one side, Koko Crater on the other, and the amazingly blue/green ocean all around. I completed a surf lesson and a stand-up paddle board lesson on a same day. You can do both on a same day if you're tight on schedule and want to experience both leisure sports, but I must say, it's tough and very tiresom after you're all finished with both. Each activity takes about 2 hours. But keep in mind that those two hours include transportation time from office to the open waters, basic safety lectures, and techniques. Your actual enjoy time would be about an hour or so. Lisa, at the office, who handles most of administration, is a very pleasant lady. A mother of two little children, she's busy playing with her children but also executes your needs very well. A perfect lady to see when you run into any water sports activity shop in Hawaii. I've been to many dive shops and many are just so chilled they don't even really say hi. My surf lesson instructors, Dan and Tracy, were super cool dudes. Dan, from Chicago, is extremely chilled and knowledgeable man. I failed miserably at surfing but he kept his cool and encouraged me entire session. Tracy was his side-kick and took pictures and videos as I struggled to stay above water. My stand-up paddle board instructor, Brandon(?), looked more like local Hawaiian dude with super tanned skin color. He too was very chilled and laid-back. He was always in our sights and instructing us to relax and bend our knees more (which is super hard when you're just trying to balance). When you're all done, you can see your pictures and videos in the office. You can also purchase it in a CD for $30. I did both activities on a same day and maybe Lisa was being generous, she gave me the surf CD for free -- as a gesture to go see it more often and learn from mistakes. I'm sticking with snowboarding. Sorry Lisa. Definitely recommended. It's located in Koko Marina Shopping Center. So once you're done with activities, you can just find your sweet spot for great foods -- I recommend Teddy's Bigger Burger. read more

I live in the area and stumbled on Hawaiian Surf Adventures after they moved downstairs to their new location. Its always nice to be able to direct people to something near by, so I walked in and had a chat with the owner. They offer surf and stand up paddle board lessons and canoe rides. After talking with the owner, I recommended our guests do the canoe ride. They were thrilled. Our nieces are 12, 15 and 18. The loved the tour and Hawaiian history lesson about how Polynesians got to Hawaii. Throughout the rest of their stay with us, they never stopped talking about how the stars are used for navigation and the rights of passages of canoe navigators. They said it was one of the highlights of their entire stay. Our guests loved this experience so much, that they went back the next day for surf lessons. They were just as thrilled with the lessons and the location in the bay is as other Yelpers say, basically deserted. The one caveat I have for others is to check the tides. The day our guests went, the tides were incredibly low, which made for some rough landings on the reef. But despite that, I think they'd go back again. They loved the location and their instructor. From our perspective as hosts, we were thrilled at how easy it was to work with Hawaiian Surf. You can't believe how hard it is to make reservations at some places - but here its easy and comes with email confirmation. The staff is great and I know we'll be sending guests over there for it again. So if you go: check out that canoe ride. Check the tides. And bring your Aloha, because the staff at Hawaiian Surf has lots of it too! read more

Came back in the other day with my friend to rent paddle boards. We were given the free rental, as offered from them due to my last experience. The service was friendly and helpful. We were 100% accommodated. The guy working helped us carry the boards (because they're huge) and he gave us a bunch of pointers so we wouldn't die. The only thing that could make this place better is if they offered hourly rentals because we just went out in Maunalua Bay for a couple of hours and paid $35. But, they do rent out quality SUP boards that are kept up so you definitely get what you pay for! I will definitely be coming back! read more

Amazing Surfing experience. Nobi, Lincoln, and Alissa were all wonderful. Nobi made my sister and I feel comfortable with a quick lesson before we got on the water, and once in we felt right at home. We even got a history/geology lesson from Nobi on the boat ride out and in. We had a small group of four and were able to take waves at our own pace with the help of Lincoln and Nobi. What made this experience even better was that since it is down in Hawaii Kai there are no crowds, we basically had our own little channel of waves. I bought the groupon deal for surfing, 4 people for 2 hours, during our Hawaiian stay. And I must say it was totally worth it!!! We had a lot of fun, and the instructors were great! Our land instructor was Nobi, who was very friendly and entertaining. Our surf instructor was Matt, who was really chill and very helpful. Because of their great instructions, my brothers, my best friend and I were able to catch some waves. Although we were only able to go out 4X each, I completely understood since we had a bigger group. Our experience with Hawaiian Surf Adventure was really positive. I wish there were more than 5 stars to give! They were so amazing here. My sister bought a groupon for all of us for Christmas. They worked extra hard to be able to accommodate or large group. We had to split up so 4 of us took surf lessons and 5 of took paddle board lessons. I was in the group that paddle boarded. SSSOOOOO AMAZING! I had done it before on a previous visit to Oahu but only had a less than 5 minute land lesson. It picked it up fairly well so I thought I was good. Little did I know there was so much more to learn. Nobi was outstanding. My previous profession was education so I understand what makes up good teaching and he exceeded all areas so how to teach. I loved it so much that I want to get my own board and more to Hawaii! The others in our group talked as positively about their instructor so I'm just guessing that this place just knows how to get it right! The only negative (wink,wink) I could say is I told Nobi not to take any pictures of me and he didn't listen. Hahaha! I am really glad now to have them! read more

Awesome experience. Our guide Nobi was extremely friendly. The canoe adventure is suitable for adults of all skill levels. One of the best parts of the entire trip was the history and information Nobi shared with us about the Hawaiian culture. He is clearly someone who enjoys doing this and sharing it with other people. So my girlfriends and I like to do something fun and different on Fridays while living here on island. Most of us had taken surfing lessons, but when we saw this groupon pop up, we knew we had to try it. First, the location caught our eye. Nowhere else (that we know of) do you take a boat out to the break. Made is seem mysterious and special. And we weren't disappointed. Besides it being an absolutely beautiful morning (which helps!), the spot was secluded and just for us! Second, our captain and surf instructor were great! They were super hospitable and knowledgeable. The individual pointers really helped us catch the waves and feel like pros! ;) I feel like we had plenty of time on the water too. Never felt rushed. The only disappointment: the pictures. We were all pretty excited to see how we looked "hanging ten" and the slide show that was presented was less than stellar. :( I don't know if it was the camera or the photographer (sorry!), but none of us bought the disc. Not that the pictures were the only reason to take the classes, but it would've been nice to have a memento from the experience. We are just lucky that we live on island and can get out and surf again. If I had been a tourist, I would've been pretty disappointed (then again, maybe we're just spoiled!). It did work out for the one gentleman that was visiting though - for whatever reason, he had good pictures! :) All in all, a great experience and I couldn't have asked for a better way to kick off the weekend! My first experience of surfing was wonderful! Thank u Jon and Henry! you are so helpful! and thank u two lovely girls that encouraged me so much (hope u will read it some day, sorry I could not make it to the brewery). I accidentally stepped on a sea urchin at the end of the lesson. ouch! Its still hurting now. however, the happiness from surfing totally triumphs the pain. I'll be back next time! read more

Just had a great experience with Tom during a private surf lesson. We went over the basics first on land, then on to the boat and out into the water. He gave great tips, gave positive reinforcement the entire time,and made sure I was in the right spot at the right time to catch my first ever waves. Will recommend to all my friends and family when they come out here to visit. read more
