I can't say enough good things about our surf instructor Jill and this company. My family was here visiting me and before we knew it, they had one day left and we hadn't done a surf lesson yet. We called up Beach Boy Hale and asked if they could fit us in before they left. Mind you, my family had a mid-morning flight, so this was a SUPER last minute request. Beach Boy Hale was so accommodating. They booked us a lesson before their official opening time, and our surf instructor Jill showed up with her 5-month old baby and husband - THAT is dedication! I believe they own BBH and their dedication to their customers is so apparent. We all had such a great surf lesson with Jill. She is so knowledgable, a very effective instructor, and she made us all feel comfortable and safe. We all stood up on our first or second tries! I'd highly recommend taking a lesson here whether it's your first time (like most of our group) or if you've had a lesson before. I've previously taken a lesson elsewhere and this lesson was WAY better. Lots of people know how to surf well, but to teach it well is harder, and Jill does a fantastic job. I thought the 1-4 instructor to students ratio was perfect - it gave us a few minutes to get back in position and rest our arms for a few seconds without feeling like we were just sitting around doing nothing. Jill had us catching waves so fast, I actually felt like I never waited for it to be my turn again. Beach Boy Hale also offers a really nice military discount, which I really appreciate. We've also rented beach chairs/umbrellas, and paddle boards from them at great rates. read more

We visited Waikiki and stayed at the (Military) Hale Koa. The umbrella and chair rentals in front of the Hale Koa are pretty expensive. Found this company online and they were really great. Easy pickup, easy drop off, right near the hotel. The equipment was well kept and the owners were very helpful. I recommend if you're looking for a family owned business that's both a good deal and good people. read more

Had a great paddleboarding lesson with Jill! She was VERY knowledgeable and patient. I paddleboard semi-regularly at my jenky urban beach back home, and came for a lesson while in Honolulu for work because I have no idea what I'm doing out there. Jill was super helpful in teaching me how to adjust my stance, how to turn, and how to deal with a bit of chop in the water. We also caught a little wave. AND saw a turtle! Great lesson. read more

Five stars for the surf lessons!!! Instructor Dane was AMAZING with my husband, son and son's friend! All three were standing up almost instantly. The 12 year olds had a blast and got worn out doing it!!;) fantastic instructor! Location... location is decent. Being military we went and cooled off at the Hale Koa pool after. Price was amazing!!!!! Definitely worth what you pay FOR THE LESSONs! The ONLY reason this review is 4 instead of 5 stars is the cost of pictures. You do get a few decent shots but to get the video, it's more than the cost of the lesson itself. Way way too expensive. I settled for photos only at $25 a person instead of video at $66. If they made this more cost effective than it would be hands down a 5 star review! Dane needs a raise! He rocks read more

Great deals for renting stand-up paddle boards! Only $15 per hour, plus they give kama'aina discount (an extra half hour for free). Other places along Waikiki Beach quoted me at least double that price per hour. I don't get it. Their boards were of high quality, too. Great spot for beach rentals! We booked 2 beach chairs and an umbrella.. The owner (Ron) provided us a rolling cart to help us move the equipment and he threw in a cooler bag to store our drinks free of charge. Definitely recommend, a bit hard to find as it's located in a plaza but overall a good experience. 5/5 read more

I think it really depends on the instructor you get. My boyfriend and I went to just rent paddle boards, but glad we listened to the "receptionist" and took lessons. Now at least we know how to catch a wave. Def think that if we hadn't taken lessons, we wouldn't have had fun because it would have just been us trying to figure out how to ride the board. Our instructor was more of a trial by error and learn as you go kind of guy. Which i liked. Our instructor stayed out with us for a little bit longer than than the hour. Again, I think it will depend on your learning style and the instructor you receive. They are pretty cheap when compared to the rest of the businesses on the beach in regards to rentals. read more

This was...kind of a disaster, but I want to say up front that it was at least partly my fault. It was the morning of my last full day in Hawaii and, after having eaten a big breakfast, I decided at the last minute to sign-up for a private surfing lesson. This was a mistake. It turns out that you have to paddle about 400 yards to the west to get to the location where the lesson actually takes place. Not something you want to do on a partially full stomach even if you're in good paddling shape, which I am not. Things didn't start out very well. I got the distinct impression that my instructor, James, didn't want to be there. He wasn't unfriendly, but not what I would call personable, either. Let's just say I don't recall him cracking a smile the whole time. After some lessons about standing-up on a surfboard on the lawn behind the rental shack, James decided, for reasons known only to him, that he was going to give me a paddleboard instead of a surfboard to learn on. A paddleboard is easier to stand on in the water, but much harder to paddle lying on your stomach, because they are heavier, obviously, but also because they are wider, which means that, instead of your whole arm going in the water, it's just your hand and forearm. Long story short, by the time we got to the waves, I was worn-out. I actually stood-up on the second wave we tried, but there was no way I was going to be able to ride multiple waves and paddle back out to the starting point, so I called-off the lesson. Things got a little worse after that. Another difference between a surfboard and a paddleboard is that a surfboard has a smooth finish that's waxed for traction and a paddleboard has a non-skid mat that glued to the board, which is great for standing on but not so great for crawling around on. It turned out that the non-skid mat had taken some chunks of skin off of both my feet, all of which were bleeding pretty good. Anyway, two morals to this story: 1) Treat this like a workout at the gym, and 2) insist on getting a surfboard and not a paddleboard. It might take you longer to stand on a wave, but your shoulders, knees, and feet will be better off after. read more

My GF and I rented stand up paddle boards from this kiosk by Fort DeRussey. Everyone was super friendly and took time to give us tips on the art of SUP (it was our first time). By the way, everywhere else charges almost 2x as much for rentals. I wouldn't go anywhere else, and they are steps away from the water. read more

Not bad for renting water things. Surf boards like $10-$15 for 1st hours and $5-$10 there after. Right now they were working on the beach shore to make more room for people. Water is nice and warm once you get in. Loved it! read more

Just finished some great surfing lessons with Chris. It was fun and he was encouraging and patient as my wife and I figured things out. I would recommend him to anyone. It was a "group lesson" but there were only 3 of us to 1 instructor which seemed ideal. All in all it seemed like a solid value for a great experience. read more

I had an awesome time with Chris this morning. He is a very knowledgable surfer and instructor and creatively figures out how to get you up on the board and riding a wave. He was able to assess my abilities on the water and helped me to adapt. Chris was extremely patient and very positive with this first time surfer. He was very careful to explain surfing safety and what to do if any other surfers happened to get too close to you, how to steer your board while paddling and while seated when waiting for a wave. Safety really came first with Chris which was extremely important to me. What a nice guy! I was nervous but really wanted to surf so he kept me relaxed and positive. The next time I am at the Hale Koa on Waikiki I will definitely try to get another lesson with these guys. They deserve the five stars I gave them!! read more

The people here are nice enough, but the surfing lesson is *VERY POOR VALUE* and after it's over, you just can't shake the feeling of being just another stupid tourist who has been seriously ripped off! Beach Boy Hale has a prime beachfront location and advertise a rate of $45 for a 2 hour lesson. Seems fair enough, but what they don't tell you is: 1) Even when you show up on time, the lesson can't begin until the instructor and other members in the party show up - and when they're running 10-15 minutes late, you can subtract that time from your lesson. 2) You will spend another 25 minutes or so on the beach while they get the boards ready, find some (dirty) long sleeved shirts for you to wear, and then give you a mini lesson on what you need to do in the water (The lesson I can see paying for, getting the equipment ready, no). 3) With well over a quarter of your total time used up, they finally tell you that you have to paddle out from their prime beachfront location to the "beginner waves" in the far distance, which takes about 15 minutes of very hard paddling, and by which time beginners like ourselves are completely exhausted. 4) Add the 10-15 minutes it takes to paddle back to shore and you can see that you are actually left with less than an hour of wave time, and that time is shared between your group. 5) Not wearing a watch out in the water, you can only go by the instructor's timing. I was a bit surprised when after about 5 wave opportunities each, our instructor said it was time to paddle back. A grueling 15 minutes of paddling later we were back on the beach where we noticed that it was only 10:30 and we should still have had another 30 minutes of lesson time left! However, by this time, there wasn't much we could do. Our instructor had long disappeared (he made it back to shore ahead of us) and the other workers there were busy chatting and we didn't want to create a fuss. We were also completely sore and exhausted from all that paddling! So, all in all, the two of us paid almost $100 (incl. tax) for about 30 minutes of *shared wave time* or about 5 waves each. I suggest looking into other places and doing your research, asking lots of questions before shelling out your hard earned dough! read more

My fiancé and I walked outside the Outrigger Hotel on Waikiki Beach hoping to surf and we came across this stand. They were able to accommodate us right away with Jill and Cody who gave us pre-surf lessons on the sand and then they took us to the water and guided us to the best beginner waves to learn. They stay with you the entire time to help you paddle and catch waves, and they even bring a photographer into the water to catch the action. Overall, we were very happy to have taken a lesson and we were even more pleased with the advice and patience from both teachers! read more

Our 7 year old daughter got an excellent surfing lesson from Aaron C yesterday! He was extremely patient and professional with her. She was a little worried about being out on the waves because she hasn't spent much time in the ocean, but AC motivated her so much, she was riding on his shoulders on a couple waves and having a blast! Rented SUP from here. The staff was so friendly and the prices were really good. I think they charged me even less than what they advertise. Was supposed to return for surfing lessons but decided to do it in the North Shore since we were staying there and it's known for surfing. So we spent all day at a 'surf school' and ended up being disappointed by the lesson and the cost. Wish I would have just taken them here! read more
