Aloha, Played at Hawaii Kai Golf Course with my boyfriend while visiting and the views alone were absolutely beautiful -- definitely one of those courses where you stop and take it all in. But I'll say this... the rough is no joke. The front desk lady warned us, "if you're not on the fairway, good luck," and she meant it. If your ball goes off, be prepared to really search for it. Aside from that, we had a great time and played pretty well. The overall vibe was relaxed, and it still felt like a fun experience rather than overly stressful. We also ordered food and drinks -- got the club sandwich with fries, and for golf course food it was actually really good and filling. Drinks were solid too. Great course with two 18 hole options, a par three or a regulation course. It's best to call and book over the phone if you are kama'aina, but for those on the go, they do have an online booking feature. The booking feature, however, is not managed by HKGC, and is operated by an outside vendor so any and all cancelation fees or issues must be addressed directly with them. I didn't use this service but my friend did, and I spoke with the proshop and learned more about it after he had an issue and I had to rebook for us. The proshop folks are very nice, both over the phone and in person. The clubhouse has quite a bit of clothing, hats, golf balls, and accessories to buy if you need anything. Only one visor option if you like visors, which I do so I was glad I had mine for the day! The restaurant was open and serving food early, which was nice. Some courses don't. The full bar was also pouring drinks to go for your carts! It was nice to take a Bloody Mary to kick off our tee time. They typically have cart beverage and snack service available too. We played a full 18 holes and it was not crowded. The greens played well. The fairways were a little dry in some areas but Hawaii Kai can get pretty dry so that is expected. This course was bad 3 years ago. I'd defend it saying yeah but... Not anymore the course is in terrible shape. I get bit watering some areas of the code but most of the farways? The greens are absolute trash. Buffalo grass growing with three other types of grass. It's an absolute POS now. Won't be playing there again until the get their back together it's gross. read more

January 2025. Hosted by my Honolulu resident fellow golf nut friend. My first time here. He downplayed his description of the course before we came. And after the round we just completed I know why he did not raise my expectations. The golf course is in ratty condition. The fairways barely have any green grass. There are way too many bare spots and burnt out areas where a fair shot lands . The putting greens are slightly better, just slightly. Sand traps do have a great looking amber color, but the sand is just 1/2" deep on top of hard pan. Most were raked nicely. Honestly the municipal golf course close to my home in Sacramento California that charges a $25 green fee is in way better condition. For the high price that a visitor must pay this golf course is not a good value. read more

I've been to Hawaii Kai Golf Course many times in the last 7 years or so. Today, I feel the course has been the greenest I have ever seen it! The Championship Course is loooonnnggg! Make sure you're hydrated! The front nine has many loooonnnggg fairways, but the back nine has a lot of dog leg turns! It gets you. Anyway, nice, long, fun Course. The price is pretty good, and the food too, not bad. The course is pretty busy, even on a Monday, so make sure you can keep up with the group ahead. Have fun! read more

Golf shop pro shop person was rude and dismissive. I called in advance to inquire about a driving range and renting clubs and the person working the driving range was polite and yes come on over. We took an uber paid north of $30 and walk into the golf pro shop. We were met by a young rude male you said we don't do that here. I went on to explain we are visiting and I called in advance and was told that they do. He said " oh just walk over there" Just rude and dismissive. How unfortunate as this was a special trip for my fiancé who has a terminal illness and just wanted to hit a few balls. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Played the Executive course with my wife. She's a decent golfer but often hits low line drives and some grounders off the tee. Well on this Executive course, that meant you were either going to spend 10 minutes or more looking for your ball or just giving up and hitting another ball because there was 6 to 8 inches of grass and weeds between every tee box and green, on every hole. What mowing they did was ugly and apparently done many days before. Some of the greens were in OK shape but the constant looking for your shot in these disasters of fairways was time consuming and frustrating. And cart paths, LOL! Probably last done in1970s.This course could be very nice if they spent any time and attention on it. read more

This course is crap. Basically brown everywhere. I'm on 13 right now swinging off a literally mound of dirt. To charge $74 to kamaaina is a joke. It might be worth $35. Ala Wai is nicer than this shithole. Definitely choose another course. Don't waste your time playing here read more

Drove out here 35 minutes just to be told that I couldn't take my son onto the golf course. I've taken my son onto the golf course more than 10 times here before. And now this one time can't do it. Be consistent with your policy or don't have any at all! You should make this very clear on your website or have somewhere displayed that you have the age available. Let's start with the "Bad"....which I think could be turned into a positive. The overall conditioning of the Championship Course is only "Okay." Lots of bare dirt patches, uneven sand in the bunkers and big clumps of weed growth on the greens. I think if Hawaii Kai did a marketing shift to billing themselves as a "Links" styled course, and fully embraced it, would help the business. The scruffy nature of the course, along with its ocean side location and strong winds, could be seen as a challenge, rather than a negative. I would try to address the weed growth on the greens as this should not be considered acceptable at any course. Now, to address the "Elephant" in the room - staff's attitude's. I found every staff member to very attentive to all of our needs. We did have some booking issues, but these were acknowledged as a technical issue and were addressed without question at check-in. All of the staff from check-in, cart loading, course Marshall, on-course food service and 19th hole were exemplary and made our foursome feel very welcomed. Pace of play was fine....no issues at all. Overall value was good (price, experience, etc). I'll likely play HKGC again in the near future.....I noticed that they allow walking, which is a big plus for me. read more

Called them to get their driving range hours. Korean man answers and says they are open until 7pm. When I asked if that means last call for buckets at 7, he said "yes". I drove here and parked at 6:30, only to show up to a sign saying "last call for balls 6pm, gate locks at 7" . Literally the worst course I've ever played. Terrible conditions - dried grass/dirt fairways. Greens are rough and patchy. The carts have ripped up seats. On the plus side, the carts are fast enough so that when you've decided to quit after a few holes of crappy golf, they can get you back to the clubhouse quickly. Reached out to management for a refund with no response. Ridiculous that they call this a "championship course". Even with the Kamaaina rate, it was a total ripoff. read more

Some of the employee's vibe match the dry dead weeds you play on for the executive course. What's with all the gloom around here? Executive course: -The "cart path" (if you can call it that) is a series of cracked pot holes and mud. -My husband stepped in a bee watering hole 3 feet from the white tee box so BEE on the look out! -To our bad luck (or awful timing) on multiple occasions, sprinklers were on for 4 of the holes and we found it hard to squeeze back into the flow at the end of our game since we were walking. We didn't have the time, patience, and endurance to walk around the course over and over again to fulfill our game so we were SOL. *Pro Tip: Ask for the times of sprinklers so you can plan accordingly (if you're walking). Championship course: We (group of 4) on 2 DIFFERENT occasions took the day off to have a nice day of golf and reserved 2 carts because we had 2 in our party who couldn't walk the entire course. When we arrived, we were told that they made a mistake and a tournament would need all the carts so we had to walk it! After telling them it wasn't an option for 2 of us, they said we should try one of the different courses on the island because there was nothing they could do. I know things happen but the "oh well" attitude was off-putting. read more

This course has been in increasingly worse condition every time I visit. The fairways consist mostly of dead grass and dirt, the greens are full of crabgrass, the tee boxes are lumpy, and the layout is terrible. It's extremely frustrating to pay full price to play on a course in such poor repair. read more

Came out last Saturday with my biddy and his GF, who rode along, at around 9:40. Had to scramble for a teatime late Friday afternoon and feel kind of fortunate they had decent times open. Maybe it's because they're not a teal popular course.l for what ever reason. Course has traditionally not been kept up that great and some fairways were a little dry but overall it's a fun course and I like coming here a few times a year. Plus it's the only course east of Ala Wai. Is $70 a round a reasonable kama'aina weekend price? $25 for a rider to Jon the group seems ok but I've not a lot of experience with that pricing. read more

I'm new to golfing and this was my first time playing at the Hawaii Kai Golf Course.  My family and I went to the Executive Course (Par 3 course).  It was super fun. The holes weren't too challenging, and I felt like I had a chance on most of them.  The grass on the green was well taken care of and our balls rolled fast and far.  Too much mana haha.  The rough was well a bit "rough and brown".  I'm not sure if this was due to COVID or maybe the summer months.  The sand traps worked well.  Haha I checked a couple of them out for you guys.  Overall though the views on the Executive Course are very nice, when you get high up into the mountain you can enjoy the beautiful sapphire blue of the ocean.  My favorite hole is the one where you get to tee off on top of the mountain and hit your ball over the ravine.  So much fun.    The staff were very friendly and helped us check in and get our golf carts.  We had an 8:55 AM tee time on a Saturday.  There wasn't really any waiting between holes, and we could move to the next hole without much trouble.  The golf carts were clean and drove well.  The bathrooms were clean and just your standard bathrooms.  There was a lot of parking and you can drive your golf cart after you play to your car to unload your clubs.  For COVID safety measures, all staff were wearing a mask, carts were wiped down, there are contactless flags (you use your putter to get your ball out of the hole), and there are no sand trap rakes or ball washing stations.  I felt very safe while playing.         For Kamaaina it's going to be $38 on a weekend.  I felt that price was right for the amount of time and fun that I had.  Overall this course is great for beginner golfers or people just wanting to relax.  My Grandpa and Father used to golf on this course so I feel like I was playing a round with them. read more

They get one star for the $10 discount to play kamaaina twilight. I don't think I have ever seen a course in worse shape than this. Reminiscent of the days playing at Mudkalena. No fairways here. Greens are bald in spots. Incredibly slow even putting downhill. Best lies are probably in the bunkers since they're fairly firm with not much sand. Massive gnat problem. I know there's gnats everywhere at certain times of year in Hawaii but other courses at least have bait stations to kinda control the population. Thankfully it rained for a couple minutes providing a smidge of relief. Stick to the west side until they figure out what to do with this course. Even at a Buy One, Get One I wouldn't book a time here read more

I golf the championship course and the Executive course about once a week. The championship course has tons of potential, but the greens are very patchy and inconsistent and the fairways are sometimes like hitting into the rough if you golf after a couple of rainy days. That said, the course is long and challenging for myself (newer to the game older golfer). Great for Kama'aina with friendly staff and reasonable rates. Heard tourist rates are pretty high though. The Executive course is awesome...greens are so much better than the championship course. A great way to work on your short game. They hidden gem is their driving range with multiple areas (mats, covered, grass) and only $10 per bucket. Cafe is good when open. Could use earlier AM hours and a food cart on the course every day would be a nice feature to add. read more

Not going to lie, my dad and I enjoyed our visit here at Hawaii Kai when we went on a summer vacation getaway. It was a much needed father-and-son time to enjoy a nice round of 18-hole golf with some of the friendliest staff members I've had the pleasure to be serviced. Let me go over some little details. -We booked the Championship Course 18-hole for a Monday morning tee time with rentals. -We get a box of complimentary Callaway Chromesoft colored golf ball. These are actually the nice ones, top of the line from Callaway. We chose pink because that contrasts with green/brown normally. -We rented Callaway clubs. Irons were Rogues, Wedges were Mack Daddy, and Fairway Woods/Driver were Epic Flash. The golf bags were 14 pockets and from Callaway as well. -Had one rental cart for us two. -We were ushered to the first hole of the Championship Course, since it can be confusing where it is given that we could've gotten lost at the Executive Course The greens were noticeably browner than what expected/would like. But we were able to find green keepers and landscapers working away. I let them know that it's our first golf course in Hawaii and immediately loved it, due to the scenery, the ocean view, the breeze from the shores was refreshing, and the soil was soft. No effort to penetrate the soil with the tee. Divots were easy to make and easy on the joints. It was enjoyable. They thanked us and apologized that we may experience browner than usual greens. They are working hard to fix that as soon as they can. The reason was because the irrigation system broke so now they have to hose the greens as much as possible. I thanked them for the heads up and the honesty of it all. They were accommodating and made sure that their job didn't impact our play. When we were about to hit, they stopped and observed. When there was a puddle forming on the green, they swept the puddle to the side. Service first, then maintaining. After all said and done, my dad and I actually broke 100 for the first time. What a place to do it. Overall, I hope they improve the greenery soon. But it was fun day for the both of us. read more

I haven't golfed in a while, especially the Par 3 course, and there were a lot of positive changes, but a lot of negatives as well. The Par 3 course finally fixed the cart path in a few areas where the asphalt was crumbling apart. Now it's a smooth concrete pathway has replaced the bad areas. Also, they got rid of the old, slow, and weak carts, and replaced them with the ones used on the Championship course, which are a lot more comfortable and has a lot more power, so going uphill isn't a slow crawl. Onto the negatives, the greens are usually not that great, but it's a lot worse now. There are so many dry areas and random overgrown bumps of grass on the greens that putting is even more of an adventure. The fairways (Yes, par 3, you should land on the green every time, but it goes sideways sometimes :) are so overgrown with grass that you can't even find your ball! That's utterly ridiculous! Even when I can see where it landed, it takes several minutes stepping down on the grass just to find the ball. Golf is already a frustrating game, and spending so much time looking for your balls does not help. A few of the water stations are gone, and so are several trash cans. It really feels like they have a shortage of a maintenance crew, or they are incredibly lazy. It's $25 for par 3 in the morning now. More and more expensive, and the upkeep is so poor! But I'll come back, as always. It's close by, and the par 3 is a nice and simple course just to cruise with friends. read more

The course is in horrible, horrible shape. They are not maintaining it. There is more dead grass than green grass. They must feel bad for the few patches of grass surviving in the fairway, as they're letting it grow to rough-length. You'll never have a good lie as everything is just wisps of grass or bramble. Hawaii Kai uses Hawaiian tee times as their booking company and thereby ignore your requests regarding unexpected charges. Besides this course being completely dry with deceiving conditions that were advertised. They will do nothing but give you the run a around if/when you have any troubles with credit card charges. Run for the hills to a public course like Pali Golf Course which offers the best views of any golf course in the world for a fraction of the extorted costs of Hawaii Kai. read more

The course was in bad shape. Not worth it for the price, especially if you are just visiting. The fairways were pretty rough. There was many holes with very little grass in the fairways. It's hard to hit a clean shot from the mostly dirt/dead grass fairways. Front 9 was better than the back 9 On the brighter side, the greens were nice. Some tee boxes had a narrow opening, which to me, was a nice challenge and didn't bother me. The staff was super nice too. read more

Oh where to begin.. You're greeted by a condescending and smug employee named Alvin who has the same amount of customer service as the amount of water used on the par 3 course. How he got the job as pro shop assistant is beyond me. He should be behind the shed working on cart parts and even then, should be required to wear a mask. He's the type of employee you want running the adult section of a JC Pennys. The par 3 course- the pathways to each hole is terrain that you need an ATV for. Hit a ball and it doesn't land on green? Well that ball is scuffed for life after landing and rolling on rocks, gravel, cement, pavement, and whatever else that shouldn't be on the course. Grass is a premium on this course. I guess if you pay $15 then maybe it could get a pass but anything above that, Hawaii Kai Golf Course is just ripping your $$. The "championship course (lol)". This is hands down the worst full course in the state of Hawaii and that's after experiencing Kukuiolono on Kauai. At least the Kauai one was under $30. This POS will run you about $70 if you're kamaaina. This place clearly doesn't get watered, doesn't know what a groundskeeper is, and like it's sister par 3 - grass doesn't come easy. The fairways, rough, and greens are like if the Ala Wai course was watered with Ala Wai water but even then would still look better than this place. There's what's supposed to be a pond on the back 9 which looks to be drained of every last drop of water at least 20 years back and is trying to become like an Egyptian desert. I guess the one good thing about this place is that because it looks like Satans hole, it was pretty empty when our group played. read more
