When a simple spot has been featured this much, it is a true institution of its own. Crazy part is that not only is it on wheels as a food truck, it's a MUCH bigger than the usual food truck you're accustomed to. Having been around this long and operating at crazy hours that obviously cater to late night crawlers and drunken fools, you must have built some solid grit to be a dedicated feeding hole around a university/college town. The staff greeted me fondly as I walked through the door. If you've never seen this on TV or online before, you wouldn't have imagined a diner within a truck designed that way. You wouldn't have been able to tell the difference from them vs a small restaurant in a city. TV, lights, posters and everything anything restaurant that you expect was there...except for the chairs this particular night. I'm guessing they removed it to better handle crowds coming through...after all, too many people dining there, lining up, and trying to order food is a classic fire hazard 101 within such a small space. I am glad to have a chance to visit this time around. I've been wanting to try it for the longest time since seeing it on Man vs Food. However, I don't know why but I just wasn't craving a burger in the moment. Maybe if I did order the burger, this would have ended up as a 5-star review based on how most people rave about it. But for now, I'll glad to still say that I'm a true fan. The Haven Dog with celery salt was simple and a quick fixer-upper for anyone slightly hungry in the moment. The steak and cheese sandwich, however, is a loaded mother-f-fer with a LOT of sliced beef atop a TINY bun with some shrooms and peppers. There's a burger joint inside this small truck. It has a few seats but it seems traffic is mostly takeout. I enjoyed the murder burger adorned with bacon and onions and the first hot dog listed, called the "Haven" onsite but listed as the "classic" on Yelp. In other words it's the one without chili. Presumably no locals are reading this, so for the tourists: get a coffee milk! Open super-late. TV plays Metallica and Jimi Hendrix videos. Growing up in RI, there were only two true kings of late night food for decades: Haven bros and NY System. No one could ever beat these and all true RIers would agree that there's one place they would rather be at 1-2am if they were hungry or smashed or both. This place was and remains classic, and the authentic burgers are damn good and serve the double purpose of soaking up some booze consumed earlier in the night. But alas, times have changed unfortunately...and we always thought this became overpriced and didn't go back or maybe were just tempted by newer, cheaper options that can do it just as good now like Shake Shack. read more

This has become my go to late night uber eats order. I swear the murder burger is probably the best burger in the state. Love the bun it comes on. A small is perfect size, like actually kinda big! And their fries are the best! A generous serving and they are super crispy even after an uber eats drive to the house. Theres something to be said for visiting in person. I used to love going down at night after a few drinks and sitting on the city hall steps to eat. But, if you can't get there in person - order some delivery. You wont regret it. After a night out on the town, we were looking for a quick late night bite before returning to the hotel room. One of our bar tenders suggested Haven brothers as it was only a short walk down the street. It was amazing to walk to the little truck. The truck was all lite up with different decorations and multiple colored lights. Like something out of a movie. Very small in side, but it is to be expected. There was a short line that moved fast. Everyone said to try the dough boys. So we did. It a beautifully fired piece of dough which you can add many different toppings to, including Ice Cream!! Many different choice for burgers. Which if you're a little more on the healthier side you can substitute beef for a well made veggie burger. The truck is Smokey inside and you leave smelling like food, so I would make this place a night finisher, not a night starter. read more

A Rhode Island staple and always there for your late night hangover cure! While out late one evening, we knew we needed to put something in our stomachs before heading home to bed. You can always rely on Haven Brothers to be there. We both ordered a cheeseburger from the walk-up window and within a minute we were shoving it down our throats. I would say that it did the trick in that moment but it wasn't the best burger I have ever had. The pattys seemed like frozen already made ones rather than fresh hand packed ones. Stopped into this truck prior to WaterFire last night and I have to say...it's essentially a greasy spoon on wheels. Decent truck stop style food. Grabbed a burger with cheese fries and a coffee milk. I ate it, called it good, and went along my way with a slightly bigger waistline and satisfied appetite. Would I go out of my way to do it again? Nah. I'd go if it were me and a group who wanted something quick. But it's good for what it is...a divey diner style food truck. These fries are so lacking in salt it would take Gandhi leading his people to the sea to remedy the situation. As far as appearance: they are so pale that they could be mistaken for a bunch of cs majors, with the exception of a few fucking brown spots-- an unbelievable blemish in what was already the worst possible fry: Haven bro's have managed to make the nasty factor on these fries go to 11. To help you understand how bad they are: if I were in a room with Hitler, Osama Bin Ladin, and these fries and I had a gun with two bullets, I would shoot these fries twice. Fuck it, it's a disgrace to call these fries... they're more if you lightly sautéed the contents of someone's cyst. They are the reason I live to forget... trust me, you will never come back from eating these... below rock bottom lies a mushy pile of repulsive potato slices, a putrid cesspool from which you will never escape. As truck based food, you cannot beat Haven Brothers! A Providence landmark! Haven Brothers is a whole restaurant on the back of a truck that parks next to City Hall in downtown about 6 pm nightly. It's a haven (har har) for bikers, late night drinkers, college students and the normal menagerie of freaks who populate downtown at night. The food is standard diner fair, all cooked on the smallest cooktop I have ever seen. You may have to wait for a little to get your food at the busy times, but it's worth it. If you are in Providence at night, you need to stop by Haven Brothers to complete your Providence experience. read more

Go to Haven Bros. enough and you can just about see it all. Its like a watering hole in the Serengeti during dry season. All species of creatures show up. 3. free milk shake samples while you wait. Chocolate chip is goooood. get a full size and dunk your cheese burger. just do it. 4. Though there are the occasional exceptions (its late and bars are closed) folks are there for the exact same thing: satisfy the buzz hunger at the end of the night. Most people are pretty chill. 5. We were walking around Prov's Art District, minding our own business, wishing for a cuppa'......hey...what's that? Oh, a diner on a flatbed truck? ....seems like a perfectly safe place to grab some grub on-the-go, non? ((gulp)) But my incessant need for cheap beverages warm enough to bring life back to my New-England-frozen-winter fingers was greater than my instinct to run away from dark, un-lit trailers....so I took to the metal-grate staircase leading to the dark unknown that was "Haven Brother's Diner!" The interior was unlit and not especially warm, my cohort and I lingered a moment at the counter. "Hello?" I called out....nothing. Then, out from behind a corner, a small man appears! He waits - apparently I should have already known what I wanted to order? - and finally I pipe up and ask for two hot cocoa's and "one of these DARLING 'home-made' cookies, please!" (Man is unamused by my cheerful demeanor and sets to whipping up cocoa order; and I set to inspecting the long list of simple sandwiches/wraps/fries that can be ordered from this "establishment"). Two cups of cheap-A chocolate, one cookie, and 2.75$ later....we were back outside (though we COULD have chosen to eat in the glory that is a grimy trailer). This is for their main diner. I have written many reviews and rarely have ever given anyone a 1, especially an iconic restaurant/diner/food truck such as Havens Brothers. Serving since 1888 obviously they have to be doing something right to last all these years. Unfortunately, I think they have hit a brick wall. We ordered two double Patty murder burgers one with and one without onions. First off the Patty looks like something, I would get in elementary school, honestly you would get a better value at Wendy's or steak and shake. The Patty had zero flavor, looks frozen, the only flavor you get is from their toppings. They charge $10 dollars for this burger, in no way would, I ever go back. We ordered a side of onion rings for $6, these onion rings were tough, chewy, and horrible, easily some of the worst onion rings, I have ever had. We also ordered the garbage plate, which comes with 2 chicken tenders, 2 mozzarella sticks, and onion rings and fries all covered with nacho cheese sauce. The mozzarella cheese sticks had no cheese in it just the breading. The onion rings were just as stale as the side order and the chicken tenders were soft and flavorless without the cheese sauce the garbage plate would simply be garbage. In all honesty, I hope this establishment returns to what made them great to begin with. They have been serving since 1888 in beautiful downtown providence RI. Maybe the late drunken crowds are keeping them in business, because drunk is the only one would find this food great. Very disappointing. Thrillst and other magazines that are judging most iconic restaurant in each state, need to take into account the actual food, the age of the restaurant alone is not good enough to justify this iconic status. In all honesty there are many clam shacks and seafood restaurant that deserve this spot much more than Haven brothers diner. So much history and it was very cool to be inside the truck. I can't believe the city was trying to make them move before. This place is a staple of Providence. RESPECT! We went to the food trucks event in Pawtucket over the weekend and stopped at the Haven Brothers truck. Let me start by saying that the food was absolutely disgusting. I ordered some fries, double cheeseburger and a hot dog. About an hour after eating, I felt nauseous and had a stomach ache the entire night. Worst burger I have had in my life. Burgers from five guys or even smashburger taste much better than what I had. Shame on you haven Brothers for serving such trash food.
