Great for Late Night Not much to review here. It's a small hot dog shack in a parking lot on 44. However, it's been a late night staple in the area for decades and for good reason. Reviewing Firehouse Hot dogs is a tricky task... as every time I have ever been there has been a late night, just left the bar at 2 AM... want to eat bad food sort of adventure.. and let me tell you... at 2 AM it hits the spot... doing its work of sopping up all that excess alcohol.. and easing the hang over that is surely to come the next day. After checking out a band at Escada, which is in the same plaza, I wandered over to grab a late night snack... not inebriated. And I was pleasantly surprised. The wieners were damn good... like easily good competition for NY System. They also have regular dogs, chili dogs, burgers, fries and a awesome Delmonico steak sandwich.. so good.. So definitely do not let the appearance of this little red shack on the edge of a parking lot in Johnston, or the parade of fist pumping, Ed Hardy shirt waring crowds disuade you.. Firehouse does the job of a great late night snack.. in the Johnston/North Providence area. read more

Not too much has changed here since the days when I was a Thursday through Saturday late night (early morning) regular. Other than moving across the way from one side of route 44 to the other and prices that account for inflation, it is pretty much the same greasy, made to order red box on wheels that it's always been. After stepping up to the tiny window, "no fries, chips!", your order is repeated verbatim in a loud bark, over the cashier's shoulder to the master of the tiny flat top, just about four feet away, "two chili on a bun!". Your chow is ID'd by giving your first name (which for me always changes) and then you are expected to wait. Just stand there and participate in drunken tomfoolery until the magical moment... "Jebediah!!". A rush to the window, a snatch of the brown paper bag, a return to the automobile that brought you there, a jubilant tear and out spills the contents right to the tabletop - aka the hood of the car you traveled there in. Approximately two minutes later the damage is done and the self-pity is high. For late-night, post-partying eats, this (barely) Johnston spot throws down - right before you throw up. read more

Good food if you are completely inebriated, and have a cast iron stomach. I've gone to this place twice, and both times it made McDonald's seem like fine cuisine. Sloppy, undercooked burgers by people who don't seem to remotely care. I suppose they just assume that most of their late night crowd are coming from the bars, and won't notice the lack of quality. A red trailer parked on the corner of a strip mall marking lot. You walk up to the order window, the woman will open it just a crack...just enough to take your order and money. Then you wait to hear your name over the crackeled speaker. Decent, cheap food for late night tummy rumbles. Most weekend nights, they'll have a line of buzzed people waiting. Seriously though, I wouldn't mind if they charged a little more, but bumped the quality of the burgers up a notch. They use cheap buns and cheap frozen burger patties that look smaller than a Micky D's patty. They use wonder bread for the hotdog rolls and the fries are usually undercooked. It doesnt matter though, you'll woof it all down and probably wont remember it the next day. The only thing you'll have to show for it will be an empty greasy paper bag on the counter. With more and more fast food placed open late, you think they would improve their offerings. Can't they get a grill in there? I guess you get what you pay for... read more

I can't explain the appeal of this place. They sell basic hot dogs and hamburgers. Sure, you can get a chili dog or a sauerkraut dog, but its nothing fancy. But here's the deal...the food here tastes incredible. Is it because I am usually slightly inebriated when I finally make my way here at 2AM? Do they line the buns with crack?? The cheeseburger costs $2.95 and is smaller than a BK double cheeseburger off the dollar menu. Its not just me that is drawn to this place; the parking lot is a bustle of activity during the late night hours and it doesn't matter if it is winter or summer. They're open LATE and that's good, especially if you're coming out from a bar or a concert. TASTE of the Burgers, Chili Dogs and Steak sandwich are OK but not great. For the price, you can get something better.. but they're probably closed anyway. The people running the place, particularly Deb are wonderful and that's what makes me come back every week.. Was not impressed by this place at all. Hot digs were alright but fries were soggy and gross and chicken fingers weren't anything to write home about. Called on a Thursday night at 12:20 after excitedly seeing they are open until 2am. An oldeer woman answered the phone ande fun of me (kind of) because I asked "Are you guys REALLY open". What she didn't know, was that she was the roughly (20th) restaurant I called listing late hours, but discovered that the kitchens had al closed at 10-11pm. I had almost surrendered and started dialing Vasilios when Firehouse popped up on my "open now" feed. After confirming with the woman that they were in fact REALLY open, I told I was heading there now and would see her in 10 minutes. At 12:41, I pulled into the parking lot where the truck is parked and see that the boards were locked over the windows and there were no lights on. Rage starts to creep up my neck as I walk back to my car and press re-dial. This time and ignorant male answers the phone and proceeds to say in a condescending way, that he was "sorry" but they had closed early because it had been slow. Even after I explain that I had just called 10 minutes before, spoke to the woman, and told her I was on my way, he just repeated, "yeah, sorry" -"you should have placed your order. I would've had it ready for you". Now, I'm pissed. I'm sorry (not). Who would think you could call an order into a LATE NIGHT FOOD TRUCK? Sorriest excuse for late night food that I've ever encountered. I drove away, muttering "asshole" and knowing that I will eat food from Shell gas station before I ever give even $1.00 of my business to this establishment. I'm so disheartened by Ri's late night food options. I'm done trying to find new spots. I'll stick with NY System. There's a reason they have been around as long as they have and continue to have the same same loyal following that continues to grow. This place is awesome. It's really only open on weekend nights- I think maybe just Friday and Saturday nights, late. Always busy with the after-club crowd. It's a small food stand that sells hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, steak sandwiches, and maybe a few other items. Chili-cheese is always an option for anything. There's usually a line so you may have to wait a few mins for your order, but its worth it if you've been out partying all night and find that you're super hungry at 3am. If you have a large order you can call it in, so you don't hold everyone up at the stand. Very cool place. Very similair to Gilley's up in Portsmouth, NH. read more

This review is based on taste and service only, right? Not for the health conscious!!! Hot dogs... awesome, however getting a little color of them would be nice... grill them, they taste like the are steamed. Get some char on that dog!!!! Burgers... awesome Steak and cheese... while the steak isn't the most tender, you shouldn't be looking for that anyways... buttered toasted bun, nice flavorful piece of meat, and just the right amont of cheese... yep, its a winner.
