If you are looking for beautiful art and craftsmanship as a souvenir, I'd suggest going to Havaiki. It's such a beautiful shop that seems like a museum. They have Hawaiian and Oceanic art that are both old and new. You can spend hours looking at each piece in detail. Many of the pieces have amazing stories behind them and the newer ones are from local Hawaiian artist and craftsman. The staff member I spoke to was kind and let me roam freely while explaining which items were made locally. Beautiful art, jewelry, woodcarvings, some items are for sale and some on display, there are many exquisite rare pieces in the store and the sales staff are very knowledgeable - more like museum docents. Very much worth taking the time to learn and understand the cultural significance of the statues, art, paddles and maps. Outside there are some benches and tables to relax and take in the beautiful trees and more exhibits. I learned a lot, and really enjoyed the store & exhibits. In the garden the volcanic steppingstones were beautiful. read more

This store is lua 'ole on Kaua'i, offering nothing but Hawai'ian, Polynesian, and Pacific Island art and artifacts. I love coming in here to ogle the exceptionally crafted and beautifully-made items. Everything is spectacular and maika'i. Most of the inventory is pretty pipi'i, but there are a few more affordable items if you really do your browsing. The last visit we bought a wonderful, hand-strung lei with hand-polished kukui painted with silver honu, Ni'ihau kahelelani, and fragrant maile which we framed and hung in our entryway to remind us of the spirit of the islands, even in the dead of a DC winter. It was relatively inexpensive, and a gorgeous souvenir -- a lei that will last forever. This year we picked up a delicate woven honu ornament with a puka for its shell -- a handmade, $8 purchase that will add Aloha to our tree every year. What I really wanted was a traditional hardwood eye-gouger (what girl wouldn't, really?), but it was prohibitively expensive (and for such a *small* eye-gouger...) much like a lot of Havaiki's products. Everything in here is nani and covet-worthy. I had my eye on a palm-fiber kupe'e with a vanilla bean woven into it, the scent of which the shop owner swore would never fade. But you could literally turn around 1,000 times in Havaiki and see something you desired at every turn. An awesome stop on any Kaua'ian vacation. read more

I was drawn to this store on my last trip to Kauai...how can you not stop in here? It's just a short cab ride from Princeville to Hanalei, across from the Ching Young shopping plaza. Many items in here are expensive but amazing to look at. It's like getting a history lesson when you walk in here, no tour bus needed. The details and selection of unique goods are very well presented. The owners are helpful and explain what each item represents. I would like to own something from here one day but all I bought was this conversation-starter tote bag (in my price range). It ended up being a nice souvenir because it will remind me to visit this store again soon. read more

This is well worth parking your car and coming in. As others have pointed out there are many unique pieces. I found two pieces of jewelry that were priced fairly and excellent quality. Havaiki is the most amazing store I have ever entered. Spending one hour admiring the pieces of artwork in this collection, was a divine gift, from the Gods of amazement. These Gods came in the form of three wonderful people named Jim, Vicki and Dylan, who spent the greater portion of six years traversing the Pacific on their 84' sailing ketch "Firebird", while amassing an incredible collection of indigenous artwork and carvings. Vicki explained to me "that at some point the collection became too large" and they opened a retail shop, in the picturesque town of Hanalei. As we approached the shop we heard rumbling drums and walked up on local percussionists holding life's rhythm captive in an ensamble of native instruments. On lookers feasted on the large complimentary picnic offered by the hosts. Though enticing, I walked past the food, having eaten lunch 5 minutes earlier. Inside I was instantly mesmerized, by the different spears, daggers, swords and war clubs handcrafted by local hawaiians and greeted instantly by Vicki, who was very kind and welcoming, unlike any salesperson I have ever encountered. I felt relaxed, unpressured and curious. Vicki began showing me around a little and explained to me the origin, use and backstory of everything I was interested in. My three favourite things were the Samoan war clubs, a handcarved blow gun- with detachable dart quiver and a handcarved walking stick. This walking stick was the single most amazing carving I have ever seen. It had an octopus handle, which curved perfectly into a sea of life motif. Dylan explained to me how "the wood is worked using all native tools such as chisels and mallets and other old-school carving utensils". They also have a large selection of handmade Jewelry,masks, clothing, tools, ornamental carvings, benches, bowls and much more. To truly appreciate a place like this you must witness it first hand. If ever in Hanalei make sure and stop here, you will not be disappointed. I'm a collector of primitive PNG artifacts so this place is always on my mind & usually visit several times each week when we stay here. Helps when we are staying within walking distance. A lot of their stock is overpriced so I really hunt the store inventory. I usually can find something to add to my collection. My only complaint is the addition of African artifacts- I noticed several there yesterday that to me detract from the South Seas Polynesian/Hawaiian flavor of the store. I love to watch people walk in for the 1st time. While my wife shops the other stores, I come here. read more

Love this store. It is so much more than a shopping experience, it is like a mini museum showcasing wonderful objects from the Polynesian islands. On a previous visit we met one of the owners who shared sorries about travelling throughout the world on a sailboat in order to find and bring bank the treasures for his store. Many of the items in the store are much to valuable for my shopping budget but I always manage to find some small item to bring home and enjoy. read more

Great place. Kind of has something for all price ranges. I talked with the owner and he was friendly, upfront, and knowledgeable about his inventory. Some of the items there are museum quality so it is really cool to be up close and to read the descriptions. We bought a turtle bowl and he shipped it for us so it wouldn't get damaged in our luggage. I also bought a ring for my wife which he notices me sneaking it over to him to purchase behind her back and he knew what was up. Definitely recommend this place. read more
