A hidden gem, off the beaten path. Dean, the owner/potter is awesome. He gave us a tour of his workshop and man what a dedicated man to his craft. Blown away by his process and that he self learned everything. He was a therapist/psychologist prior to making this his career and I am so glad he did...bought some beautiful ceramics (mugs, ring dish) and highly recommend visiting and supporting such a beautiful craft. You don't find them like that anymore...until you go to LightWave and it gives you hope and appreciation that good workmanship still exists!! Absolutely beautiful and a memory I will have forever.

The shop front. It's not visible from the street but there are signs to guide you.

Almost all of Dean's works have some island flavor, including some clay made with Kauai red dirt.

The…read moresign outside says "A Candy Store For Art Lovers", and is probably a better name for the laid-back Hawaiian art gallery within. I like art and always like to check out galleries when I am traveling. Bustling Kapaa is only good enough for a pit stop between the north and south shores in my opinion, so I was surprised to find a gallery here when strolling around looking for something to eat. The gallery has some beautiful Koi Fish paintings, which are probably the main attraction. The artist of most of them, Seamus, was in the store both times I went in there (and I got the impression he is there a lot) in case you have questions for him. I'm not into Koi although I know a lot of people are for the symbolism, but the Koi paintings (and other ocean/water themed works) are vivid in color and worth checking out if passing by. If you are into fantasy-type ocean scene paintings, the ones in this shop are on par with Wyland and much more reasonable in price! I'm not into Koi or fantasy-art, and ended up going for an abstract piece that resembled waterfalls, painted in blues/greens with gold leaf, on a piece of birch wood. Very beautiful and changes with the lighting. The store curator, Ray, is a flexible on price and delivery methods. I left feeling like I paid handsomely for the art, but I got a deal. Maggie had just viewed a ton of lovely local birds at the nearby Kilauea Lighthouse. There was calming feel to the Kong Lung shopping center. I spotted a lovely fountain and listened to the soothing sound of running water. Next to the fountain was the Lotus Gallery of Fine Art. I enter and breathe in a delightful scent. There is a sense of age in the wondrous artworks here. I saw many different jewels. So beautiful. Then I glanced upon silver turtles. Maggie placed them upon her neck and they sparkled in the mirror. From the look on her face I knew she was sold. Price was reasonable averaging $100/turtle. Shop owner was very helpful and knowledgable. While we did see live turtles from a distance in Poipu this is the tale of the origin of the 3 turtles Maggie has around her neck and her 2017 birthday present.

The outside mini garden complete with white Thai spirit house is so pretty, and in keeping with Thai traditions. However, when I noticed one Thai gold Buddha statue would set someone back $18,000, well, I decided I may be in the wrong shop. Perfect browsing for the hope-to-win the lottery set, or already minted millionaires, which makes sense since Kilauea is the home of many a newly minted tech millionaire --or really billionaire now, as the millionaire thing has become passé. Not to discredit, its not an easy feat to get Buddhist statuary out of Thailand, and requires jumping regulatory hoops (for good reason, to be sure you are not removing real antiquities of cultural significance) but shopping here is just not realistic for most mere mortals.

We've passed by this shop over a few dozen times over the years & decided to give it a go. The items are handmade from the Koa tree that is found in Hawaii. There are pens, jewelry, bags/purses, wallets, key chains, cutlery, ornaments, vases, kitchen items & other curious artwork displayed for sale. Candace was manning the shop & she was so friendly & welcoming. She even suggested a lady who might be able to create what we're looking for. This lady works from home & has a website (Tropical Isle Music). I love to support local businesses & Candace was so charming, I bought a couple of Aloha Hula girl ornaments & a pineapple (see photo) ornament. There's a few spaces for parking that it shares with Mankoa & a granola shack. It was lovely speaking with Candace, who I learned is actually half Filipino & half Japanese, born & raised in Kaua'i. Her grandfather was one of the first Filipinos who arrived from the Philippines to work in the plantations in Hawaii. It's always interesting to learn about people & their heritage. I'm very pleased with the experience & my purchases at this shop

He was loved by so many & we all struggled with his loss & how to best honor his legacy... Kailon was the kind of human that made an impact on random strangers. He brought joy to everyone who knew him. Even Kyle had a story to share about our brother; it was memorable to say the least lol. Kailon was like that... So when it came time to do the ashes, many of us wanted to enjoy a little sliver of physical love, a token to cherish. Enter: "Cremorial Glass Charms." Wow.... Kailon's ashes were mixed with glass & some green (his favorite color) & these amazing little lifetime beauties came from that mana mixed with the master glass man himself. Kyle was very considerate, respectful & really went above & beyond for us in a time of grief. His "bedside manner" was much appreciated in a time of chaos, grief & heartbreak. Now KailonStoked is all over the place. Many have his charms on them at all times, because we know his spirit is with us, but we also have a daily reminder of whose legacy we are honoring. Priced very fair & provides a unique way to preserve our loved ones.... Work with Kyle for your beloved; you can even get unsealed charms as well (in case you want to take the ashes & spread them around). From all of us in the Kailon Stoked Ohana; mahalo to the Glass Shack, owner Kyle & his amazing staff.
