Years ago when Hatfield's Goode Grub was just about to open it's location on Lorain Rd in Cleveland my spouse and I were walking by and we looked in the windows... the owner Ken Hatfield came out and invited us in to see the place prior to opening! He is such a wonderful man, very welcoming and friendly! We had a nice little tour and planned on going back asap, upon the official opening. Unfortunately we didn't make it there for years! Funny though that over those years, we saw Ken Hatfield on the food network and we would see the food-truck that they own around town. Recently we FINALLY made it in for brunch. OH-MY-GOODNESS! We were SERIOUSLY missing out! Not only is Ken Hatfield a wonderful guy but he is an amazing Chef and Hatfield's Goode Grub is one of my favorite brunch spots now! I don't think Ken remembered us from all those years ago, but he made it a point to come out of the kitchen during our visit and stop at every single table to touch-base with his guests. I really wanted to give this place a 5 star, was excited about it since seeing Hatfield on Chopped. However, it may be a victim of the times we live in. Service was a bit slow, the table was dirty and the bathroom was dirty as well. Employees were standing talking instead of doing. Old days people wiped down tables, menus, shakers, the floors, etc. All that kinda makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like. That being said it has above average food. This is the first restaurant we've ever been to that flat out refused to even attempt to cook our burgers to order. My girlfriend requested her burger be cooked medium rare while I wanted mine medium well. We were informed that they cook all their burgers medium with no exceptions. My girlfriend settled for her overcooked burger while I resorted to finishing cooking mine at home. In addition, the burgers were quite skimpy on beef, certainly less than 4 ounces, or 1/4 pound. My girlfriend thought it tasted like frozen beef. Furthermore the attitude of the employees who interacted with us could best be characterized as 'annoyed' by our presence. She politely went and got,"Jessica" Co-Owner and Head of Operations there at the restaurant and at first, She told me "Oh no, I'm so sorry we're just so short staffed Our kitchen would become so overwelmed with that many people; We need like 2 weeks notice in advance for a reservation..." Stuff like that... Knowing my Husbands cousin isn't as used to traveling this deep with having a large family is exactly I felt I needed to introduce Myself and talk to them about the whole situation... Being understanding I went outside to talk to my husband who was walking up with my several brother in Laws and their Families.... Our group was mixed between Many Many Adults and even more small children... I continue to start to tell my husband what the situation was that they just couldn't accommodate us trying to be understanding that a party of Our size can't just "Walk in" somewhere and expect to be able to be seated right away... but also 2 weeks ago We hadn't the slightest clue that We would ALL be traveling from across the country to be here Celebrating the life of Our Family's Matriarch.... So Here We Go, Not only did Jessica Go talk to the Other Owner, "Ken Hatfield" about Our party but then came outside to to say," Hey I talked to the Other owner and "IF" you guys can be VERY VERY understanding of the time it will take to get food and drinks out to everyone and We can only allow 1 check per table" Being Understanding it was an Of Course We completely understand and away we went to be seated.... Now starting with 24 of us present; ending with 50 total in Our party Between Melissa, Kristen and Jessica On top of the Kitchen Staff whom We hadn't the pleasure of meeting Kicked some Serious ASS for us!! AND Lets just say ALL the Food I tasted made my tastebuds do the "Happy Dance"! I mean Smothered Fries, Amazing! My Cuban sandwich, Amazing! I said that would be perfect as long as the party could have access to the alcohol and she said yes, it was perfect. Fast forward to the day of Dec 23rd I called to confirm everything and no reservation was held and to top off they were closed that day for an employee party! No apologies... No follow up w the employee that took the message and the owner knew who the " assistant" was! No nothing. We get Hatfields all the time.. Either delivered or stopping in! I called back just to to follow up this past week to speak w the owner directly, if it was my business I would want to know.. spoke w the assistant Manager... promised a call back and well that was 3 days ago and nothing! So I guess I will take my $100 a month and find some where else to patronize they obviously don't need it. Caught this new food truck during Walnut Wednesday the other day. There was a huge line in front of it, but once I made to the front of that line, the food came out extremely fast. They have a pretty extensive menu of quick and simple southern-style comfort food. Had a pulled pork sandwich with a side of bacon mac and cheese. They were out of cole slaw by the time that I ordered, but even without the cole slaw, the pulled pork sandwich was flavored very well and the meat was sweet and tender. The mac and cheese was also great - they used shell-shaped pasta rather than your normal macaroni - it was a tad sweet, not overwhelmingly cheesy, with enough little bits of bacon to make you want more of it. Love the hype of Hatfield's but was really disappointed in the establishment. I love their food truck. It seems as though maybe the expansion is a little too much, as I was shocked that the interior was drab and gave a not very clean feeling. Staff was absolutely amazing but the prices are ridiculously high on their food; drink prices were average. I actually attended their comedy night it was nice to see up and coming people get the courage to go on stage. Hatfield himself may have reached a little too far with this one though, I mean food truck, store, nuts, sauce and a restaurant it is hard to excel at one thing let along all these things at once! read more
