This is one of the most fun birthdays I have ever had and it is all thanks to Hatchets and Hops! A group of us went out and it was so much fun. You get the instruction and the tips on how to throw the hatchet and then boom, you're off and running. (Not actually running, but you know what I mean.) The instructors are all great and really liven up the whole experience while also giving you tips along the way. This kind of activity really brings out the competition in people in the best way. Many of us had ever thrown hatchets before and those who had, aren't masters by any means. It was just a really enjoyable time to all try something new together. The drinks help too! Not with the throwing (I mean I don't think so) but with keeping the spirits high and having a good ol' time. The space itself is very big but with the cages for throwing, it can get a little tight with a lot of people. There is a bar there with some great beers on tap including the mystery beer which is always fun to try to guess. Food is limited to mostly pub grub but honestly, you're here to throw hatchets, not eat a ton. The pizza we had was good though so check that out. Overall, this is a really cool place to try out. We came here for a work team event. We were able to have our own cage with our own staff member Kai that kept score and made it a fun game for us all. We played several rounds then a final elimination game. Kai guided us through it all. Another staff even took time out to help me practice because I really sucked at throwing an axe. Tonight we went to Hatchets and Hops for a family night out. There 14 of us, a big party but the venue handled it perfectly. Everyone arrived had a few drinks ordered some grub and prepared for the Burns Clan axe tournament. Our host and coach Elijah was GREAT! He was a good teacher but a better Host and Entertainer. That is the guy to request when you book a party. He organized the event and kept the night and crowd going. Super guide for our axe throwing tournament. Came here with my cousins for a fun night out and enjoyed our experience. I sadly don't remember the staff members name who was with us but wow I have to say he had a lot of energy and brought a lot of fun and excitement to our experience. He really seemed to enjoy his job, or at least he could fake it really well. He must go home without a voice every night he works for all the shouting and cheering and jumping around he did. It is a somewhat price night out, I think it was like $40 a person for 2 hours, and in that time it doesn't seem like you get a ton of throws, but it was still a fun and different way to spend a night out. I personally was having a lot of trouble getting my hatchets to stick, and while our staff member was energetic he didn't seem to have many tips for me, one of my cousins had been to a similar place in Syracuse and felt that they had been more helpful and gave more practice there. At one point he basically said to not give a crap and just chuck it, luckily I kept trying the general throw and got it eventually, but with the few amount of throws we got I felt like just went I got the hang of it I was done. Also be aware that they will mix you with other groups. There were 6 in our party and we got matched with another group. It seemed like it would be ideal if your group was at least 8 people, maybe 16, that way you would get more out of it. They kind of run it like a tournament with a sort of finals bracket and only 1 of our six made it to that, so the last half hour we basically watched the other group throw, not the companies fault that we weren't as good, but still a little annoying. Overall it was a fun night out and I would be willing to go back but wouldn't be in a huge hurry to do so. I would definitely have a different size group to try to maximize if I did. read more

We had a reservation for 5:30 and were there for a little over two hours. There are three areas for throwing with two spots in each. They assign a staff member to give helpful tips and to keep score. You get a round to practice then a few rounds are kept score then you do a tournament bracket within the group. I cannot rave about how much fun this was. The experts are so fun and made it a point to make sure we all were able to throw the correct way (which was hard for some of us). I finally got to experience this place with their Sunday Funday $20 special. We arrived around 6:30 p.m. We had to wait a few minutes to see if anyone else would arrive, or if we would have to be paired with a group after receiving instructions. The lady giving the instructions was great. She worked with us to improve our form, and make sure we got it down before facing off against some guys from the Air Force. Turns out she was a great teacher, because we kicked their butts. The score keeper was great, and made sure we all had fun and encouraged us. I definitely recommend checking this place out. Axe throwing has been on my to-do list for ages now and Sundays they have an open throw session for $20 (normally $40 with reservation) so I made plans to go. First thing I noticed is the staff was friendly, helpful and enthusiastic! Also, a pretty decent craft beer list is offered. ($7 for most pints) I tried a Strawberry Sour and was quite pleased with it. There was three rounds of axe throwing .... first practice, then scoring for points, then a championship/elimination round. I was quite pleased at myself and hit the board more than I thought (no bullseyes but came close) I was getting hungry and decided to order a pizza (the Fun-guy one, $12) it was just ok, kind of tasted like a pie at Chuck-e-Cheese, with no feta as described on the menu. Came out on a Friday afternoon for the first time. Reservations were made a head of time. It was $40 per person for 2 hours. When i got there just had to give my name and show ID. Had to scan QRS code for check in and to sign a waiver/Covid questions. Had a really nice time. This was my first time ever axe throwing. They give you instructions and practice time. It is located on Main street in downtown Buffalo. As any Buufalonian knows parking can be a hassle. There is off street parking if you get lucky enough. After reading some good posts, I finally change my mind and decide to give a try while jumping out of my comfort zone. And I bring a party to play together! Overall, not a fun experience for me, it really needs certain skills and practice to master it. I barely axe anything on the board, lots of time I had the handle bounce off all over the place. Fortunately, I only did during Sunday night casual hour ($20 per hour) and know it's not my favorite now. The instructors are very good to work with, they gave tips and ensure no one is going into the target area first without the other done throwing. Going to preface this review by saying we went on a Saturday evening, so it's possible our experience was skewed by going at the busiest time. Check-in was very easy, just had to scan a QR and fill out a COVID form. They sat us down in one of the throwing lanes and said we could get drinks or food. About a half hour later we started getting the pre-throw instructions. We were grouped in with about 15 other people and ended up doing a sort of tournament as a group. Maybe it's on me for not doing more research, but I would have liked to be able to throw when our reservation started and not have to cycle through a much larger group. The whole time, the middle of three lanes was being used for seating instead of throwing (covid spacing, maybe). All in all, the hatchet throwing was fun and if you want to drink and just throw a few times this is fun. If you're trying to just throw with a couple friends, it's a bit of a letdown. I'd like to come back on a weekday to see if there's less of a wait to get going and a little more consistent throwing. read more

You can drive on this area of Main now, park in certain places however you will find it easier to park on the streets around Main. What can I say but man o' man this is going to be an awesome place to be! After watching FB updates the reservations board finally opened so my friends and I booked a lane. Each lane has two targets, when booking you will need a team of 6 and will be paired against a team for friendly competition. Your axe masters will walk you through the rules and regulations they have in place to ensure everyone's safety. Upon entering through the glass doors you'll be greeted and required to sign in and read and sign a waiver, once in the mail floor you will immediately see the throwing lanes. There are 4 lanes on total, each with two wooden targets. The lanes are marked out by chain link walls however have some open space available between lanes in the standing area. In the aisle behind the lanes you will find coat hooks under the railing and a few stools, depending on where the teams stand this area maybe a bit cramped. Towards the back of the facility you will find one large table, washrooms and the bar. On opening night the instructors walked us through the process and allowed for several axe throws prior to starting the game. Scores tallied during the practice placed the two teams in our lane against each other in a bracket style tournament. Once in the tournament we threw our hatchets against one another advancing to the final and a champion. Overall this is amazing experience and I can't wait to do it again, in about a month the bar will be serving beer and they will be in their flow everyone. Everyone we talked to was great and so friendly and coached us through the whole game wanting us to hit the target and get it to stick. If you have the desire to throw a hatchet, maybe let our your inner Paul Bunion get a team together and give this place a try. read more

When I travel, I like to do things that are different. Things you can't do other places. Throwing deadly weapons while drinking alcohol? That's new. What could possibly go wrong? A friend of mine made reservations for 5. They are only open certain days of the week and things fill up fast according to the front check-in desk, so plan ahead! The organizational scheme is great. They do a little safety talk and then lead you into metal cages with targets at the end. You take some practice throws while an attendant gives you pointers on your throwing motion and how to grip the hatchet. If it doesn't stick on the target you get zero points so getting the motion down is crucial. Things move at a great pace and they cycle everyone in two at a time. This prevents injuries and I will say that I felt very safe (as much as you can hurling deadly weapons). Since you're cycling in with your group and the other people in your cage, it makes it easy to socialize and grab a beer in between throws. Beers were roughly $6/piece with a handful to choose from. They also have food available but we had already eaten. Attendants were friendly and helpful. They kept score and rallied the points. Tournament winners get a free beer- yay! Of course the one guy who doesn't drink from our group won. Causation or correlation, we will never know... read more

A fun night out if you get a large group together, book ahead, and can secure your own throwing cage. Going earlier when the instructors are fresh and you're less inebriated also helps. At $40 for the axe throwing plus $7 per beer, it's not particularly cheap, but the staff are energetic and helpful, and I saw my technique improve throughout the night. You get about 10-20 throws depending on the size of the group and how well you do; I wished for more practice and some bonus throws for the group members who were struggling to make contact with the boards. Pizza was solid and we devoured several. Misuta Chow's is next door and makes a great spot to continue drinking, eating, and playing. There are 3 cages with 2 targets in each cage so 3 groups of 12 can be going at the same time. I was surprised, but they let you drink during your hatchet session! We did a initial throwing (5 tosses each) and our instructor ranked us on our points we scored. After that, we were placed into a bracket for double elimination (3 tosses each) and found a winner! He was patient with us and really took the time to make sure we knew how to throw the axes and were having fun, not getting frustrated. I loved the bracket tournament style, but would have liked a double elimination or a losers bracket, with less round robin time, so you could continue playing even after losing after 5 throws. I'll be honest: I was not expecting to have fun. I was expecting to be bad at this and only went because it was a friend's birthday. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was I not as terrible at it as I expected, but the whole atmosphere and team interaction was actually really fun. The practice round was useful. I definitely appreciated that each person got some individual feedback. Everyone in our group was new to axe throwing so we all did a basic overhead two-hand throw. There is a limit to how much practice you get but most of us had something of the hang of it by the time the round robin portion started. After everyone goes the same number of times, you do an elimination tournament. You get a couple minute break in between so your instructor can tally up the round robin results and set up the brackets. Great chance to grab a drink from the bar or laugh about how many times your hatchet just ricocheted right off the board. In all seriousness though, the best part is when you get to swagger up to the board and pull out the hatchet with a little oomph because you sunk it deep into the wood. A large group of your own people is probably the most fun, though cost can be prohibitive. Definitely worth trying though. read more

My friends and I try to do a monthly outing and this was it this month. I was hesitent at first, unsure if I'd really like it. But I ended up having a blast and would highly recommend it!! Came with a group of 12 on a Sat at 5:30. You do need to make a reservation expect for Thursday evenings is open throwing. The whole event took about 2 hours, which makes the $40/person worth it. If your group is less than 12 you'll probably get paired with others for the competition. But since we had 12, we started off with the instructor (who was awesome!) teaching us how to throw. Two people go into the cage at a time. You can't bring beer in, have to wear close toed shoes, and no hoodies. After we learned how to throw, we started to compete on who could get the most points. After all took their turn our instructor tallied it up. Then that started the elimination round. We went head to head throwing 3 times each until we had a winner. The winner received a free beer and koozie. You can drink as much as you want while others are throwing. All the staff were great. I had never thrown an axe in my life. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would end up going to an axe throwing party with a group of friends (and live to tell the tale) but I did! Prior to our planned gathering, I spoke with a few healthcare workers at my institution who had a work outing there and they all had a phenomenal time, so I was excited to give it a try. When you walk in, you sign a waiver (not a shocker) and they make sure that they are never at capacity inside of the establishment for safety concerns. There are multiple cages, each one with an instructor inside it during all of the rounds. The instructors were fantastic - they explained the rules clearly and repeatedly went over the proper technique to help improve your score (yup, they keep score for you!). I felt safe and secure the entire time. On another note, you can purchase wine and beer in the back, but they make sure the people participating are not inebriated. They do sell coffee too - I even purchased one of their awesome mugs! They have other items you can purchase too (shirts, etc). What an excellent concept and a great time! We visited last night with a 10:30 reservation for two couples. None of us had been before and we had no idea what to expect, well besides throwing axes and drinks. All I knew is I wasn't playing goalie. We got there early and watched as other groups finished up. Everyone was high fiving, yelling and having a great time. We weren't sure how well we'd do but it looked like a ton of fun. When our turn came up, we were grouped with another 8 people we didn't know. The staff ( I don't remember his name) really did an awesome job of getting everyone talking, rooting for one another and basically having fun. First was the short instruction. Throwing axes and having them stick is harder than it looks (at least for me, I ended up sucking at it.) The guys didn't seem to have an advantage as it seems to be more technique than power. I did get a few to stick. Next was a round robin tourney where we faced off for points that resulted in a ranking for everyone in the group. Then came the brackets which are single elimination with the last person winning. All in all is was a really fun and interesting experience. The girls had as much fun as we did and we met some very cool people we ended up seeing down the street at another place afterwards and had a drink with. (we're in our 50's and they were probably in their 30's) This was us with strangers. I can imagine that this would be a tremendous team building event for an organization. We were all talking and rooting for/against one another and talking crap. It was great fun and so interactive! The staff really made that part happen. Top grades for the folks that work there! There are no walk in's so be sure to get a reservation. You do have to pay ahead of time. Also, having a group of 6 or more gives you the opportunity for an earlier time slot. We had 4 and got a later one. The two hours went by in a flash and was more than worth it. For team building or just having a great time with friends, I'd highly recommend Hatchets and Hops. I had been wanting to come here for the longest time but wanted to have a group big enough to go with, as we were told that if you have less than 12 you get paired up with anyone that comes in. So, we came with my group of friends that get together on a monthly basis for a fun friends activity. Based on the name and premise of the activity, you might assume it's just willy nilly axe throwing whenever and wherever, beers in hand and drunken times a rolling. It's not (which is actually sort of a relief). It is actually really well organized and run, and very safe. Yes, you can drink beer and other libations, but all drinks stay outside of the throwing lanes. Yes, you throw axes, but only when specifically called upon my your instructor. Our instructor was great! They call out two names at a time to come and throw against each other. There a multiple rounds of throwing while she keeps score, and it all boils down to the championship at the end where one person in your party is crowned the axe master (my term, not theirs!). The instructor keeps score throughout and gives great instructions on how to throw, demonstrates for you and gives you tips the whole time. Apart from the axes, their draft list is really quite nice and provides a little liquid courage for anyone who is a bit nervous or needs to loosen up. A group of 10 of us visited Hatchets and Hops this weekend. We made reservations several weeks in advance and were told groups of 12 are ideal, so a few people may join us if there are walk-ins. Another couple did join us and it was fine - you have as much or as little interaction with others as you want. When you get there, be prepared to show ID and sign a waiver. Once you're in, there's a small bar that had about 8-10 beers on tap. While I love IPAs, I'm pregnant and had to settle for water. (Probably my only complaint about the whole night. They make you get your own water from a tap on the wall - it's warm and disgusting. They don't offer ice. Seems like they could offer bottled water.) The beer selection was good - IPAs, sours, stouts, etc. Good breweries - not just the standard Bud Lights and Labatts. Once your group has their drinks, they start you off by briefly teaching you hatchet throwing techniques. You basically get in a large cage with two boards and you and another person throw hatchets at your marks until it's someone else's turn. You get practice turns, a round robin, then you're placed into seeds and there's a tournament, with the winner getting a free beer. It takes about two hours - not too long and not too short. While your friends are throwing, you stand outside the cage but can watch them and chat amongst yourselves. Be warned, it's in a tricky spot so parking, especially in winter, is a nightmare. As is typical of Buffalo, plows had left huge mounds of snow in front of the business so you couldn't actually park in the few spots that should have been available. I enjoyed my time there but based on the location I wouldn't go back in the winter. We didn't order food but I did notice small menus posted where you could get things like fries or (I think) pretzels. Cost is $40 a person before drinks, so $20/hour which is reasonable. I planned a last minute shindig two days before and ended up gathering a much larger group than anticipated. The staff was very patient and accommodating of our group, we were lucky that there was an extra lane open and last minute additions were able to throw as well. We started with a brief orientation and coaching session, then were divided off to compete. Even though it's not as easy as it looks, it also isn't as hard as it looks either. They are clear with the rules on what to expect, so the only surprise was how much fun it would be! I highly recommend this experience for anyone looking for something fun to do. read more
