They have a huge selection of dried chilies, chili powders and knick knacks for sale. The lady who was helping me was was very nice, and as I was telling her I was going to be shipping them to a friend advised me against shipping green chilis which were frozen due to them being out of season. They also offered to ship products for me. I would definitely stop by the next time I am going through Hatch. read more

We love this place- have bought big bags of fresh roasted green chiles (and lots of dried red ones, too) the past two years in August while passing thru. (when the green ones are fresh and actually in season-- ). They are a great family owned biz - and its an amazing treat for us to bring them back home to CA where I immediately vacuum seal and freeze all that goodness. Hit Hatch yesterday from Tucson to pick up 160 lbs (4 40-lb bags) of Sandias. Little did we know that Hatch was hit by rain for the previous 4 days so getting out to the fields to pick was difficult. Went to our usual place to get the chiles and they had NONE. We were told they weren't going out in the fields and warned that it was unlikely we'd find any fresh chiles, especially Sandias at any other vendor in town. Terribly disappointed we decided to try Hatch Chile Sales and were so excited when we were told they had been in the field that morning and had all varieties available. A little skeptical about the freshness since we had been told at our usual place to be careful not to be sold chiles picked right before the rains, our guy at Hatch Chile Sales opened a bag, let us dig around towards the bottom to inspect and he even took one out and snapped it open for us to see the freshness. He offered over the chile for us to taste and it was bright, crisp and spicy! Perfect! Placed our order, left to have lunch and came back to find all four bags roasted and ready to go. They carried them out for us and put our order in our ice chests. As we were getting ready to leave, a pickup truck came in from the fields with bags of just picked chiles stacked as high as possible. I've learned my lesson and will be hitting Hatch Chile Sales up for all my green chile needs in the future. This smaller, less commercialized place is not only cheaper but they try harder and I appreciate the customer service and warm smiles. Plus, how can you resist their guard dog? Fun place to stop to pick up some of the famous Hatch Chiles to take home to friends and family. Reasonably priced. Very helpful sales person that advised us on different types of green chiles. Dried, other peppers that looked like pretty red beads, that just need to be pinched every so lightly to sprinkle over the top of your food. We also purchased some dried, for the son who loves to cook with green chile. It's the kind of place you want to stop when you've been on the road, need to stretch the legs a bit, and buy some local flavor. read more

They didn't have much while I was there. No fresh chiles and no ristras. They had exactly 3 bags of the xxx hot chile powder and 2 bags of crushed pepper flakes. That's it. We bought out our 3 bags which were marked 2 for 10. They tried charging 2 for 15 until we pointed out the pricing on the bag which they honored. They did have sign on their door stating that if they were closed and you wanted chiles to call the owner at a certain number, and they'd come open for you and give you a discount for your inconvenience. read more

I absolutely love this place! My husband and I drive through Hatch on our way to and from Arizona and we always stop to get some chilis on the way home. This place is top-notch and the employees are really knowledgeable. Also, the last time we were in, the employee showed us some of their home-made, specialty spice mixes which, after smelling, we bought immediately! The prices are really reasonable and they really talk you through their selection to ensure that you leave with exactly what you want. We will continue to stop here on our road trips. read more

The place smells deliciously of peppers and has quite an assortment to choose from. Not sure how to cook with the peppers? Just ask the friendly young lady working the counter who is a wealth of information! Can't wait to make my own red chile sauce and cook with ancho peppers! We stopped in Hatch Chile Express and felt that they were a little too commercial. We looked around and found the little shop of Hatch Chile Sales. We picked up a bag of their Chipotle Chili Powder and fell in love and decided to buy three bags as well as two bags of the Chipotle Chiles themselves. We drive through Hatch at least 4 times a year and always stop for fresh chiles. Usually we stop at Hatch Chile Express because parking seemed easier with our travel trailer but, this last trip, we were trying to get to the Pepper Pot to pick up some take-out for dinner. We were too late and they had closed so we went across the street to the Hatch Chile Sales and were pleasantly surprised at the selection and price. (They also have a large lot beside and behind the store so parking was easy.) The store is not as "touristy" as HCE, but that's irrelevant. We bought some fresh chilies, chile powder, and 10 lbs of onions. Bottom line is, you're not to going to go wrong buying chiles anywhere in Hatch. If you are in town, I'd recommend Hatch Chile Sales for the price. If you are ordering online, then Hatch Chile Express seems to be your best bet. Enjoy! UPDATE July 2015: We just made another of our regular visits to Hatch. (My orignal review was demoted to "not recommended" for some reason even though someone marked it as helpful.) This trip we passed through Hatch on a Saturday afternoon on a very hot day. There were no other customers at the store so we had plenty of time to talk to the owner about chilies, recipes, and his time on the rodeo circuit. He had some new chilies for us to try (G-76) but no Big Jims. No problem, we grow our own Big Jims and still have a lot frozen from last year. The G-76s are similar to the Jims but are supposed to be a little milder. To us, they are pretty much the same on the heat index. We also bought a few pounds of Pasilla chilies, some hot chili power (in Ziploc bags), and 10 pounds of onions. The onions were half the price of those in the local stores. No change on my rating. Our stops in Hatch are always fondly anticipated on our RV trips even if we have to detour an hour or so occasionally. Again, you will not go wrong at any of the chili shops in Hatch, NM. read more

What a marvelous place! They have all kinds of chili, both fresh and dried, plus onions, garlic, dried pinto beans, cinnamon sticks and other assorted spices. We had them roast half a bag of mild chilies (about 20 pounds) for us which is now in our cooler for our journey home. Well worth the stop. read more
