I ordered a large box of medium Big Jim Chilis from this company. Spent hours roasting cleaning and vac sealing only to find out the chilis had zero flavor and no heat. I have been buying Hatch Chilis for around 50 years and have never experienced this. I suspect you never rotate your crops and have ruined the soil these were grown in. I was offered a 20% discount on future purchase but why take the risk, just buy elsewhere. read more

Very disappointed. We've ordered from this vendor several times and have always been thrilled to see the white box on our doorstep 2000 miles from NM. Order fulfillment has always been great and on time. This time however we discovered our "Hot" chiles were lacking any noticeable heat. They also look unusually long for Sandias, so I suspect they might be Big Jim or Joe Parker instead. We reached out to customer support who let us know we were probabaly "removing the vein". We've always followed the same process. Roast over an open flame, peal, remove the seeds, bag, and freeze. We never wash or de-vein the chiles and have always had a rich warm burn. After discovering the total lack of heat in this batch, we even left them roasted peeled with the seeds intact for two days in the fridge, hoping they'd develop some kick. Nothing. We're not heat chasers or "chile heads." Heck, we're from New England, not exactly known for spicy food. Usually, one pod is enough to add the perfect amount of heat to a dish. This time, I used five pods in a succotash, and the heat was barely noticeable. Honestly, this batch has only slightly more heat than a bell pepper. That's a big and disappointing departure from what we've come to expect. It really seems like we were sent the wrong chiles. But since they refuse to even consider that possibility or make it right, we'll take our business elsewhere. It's a lousy way to end what had become a beloved fall tradition for us. I'm sure our small 10-25 lb order won't matter to their bottom line, but we're genuinely bummed out. read more

I would simply stay away from this company if you can. I just ordered 10 lbs. of green chili and two jars of red chili ($164.15 for the order) , and since I no longer live near Las Cruces (I now live in Michigan), I was hoping for the best. They shipped me 9 lbs. and then tried just today (an hour ago) to tell me they shipped my order as ordered. That's a complete lie, and I feel like they are trying to gaslight me (like I cannot count, though I hold a Ph.D. in English. Really? The majority of our population can count to 10, unless you are 0-2 years old.) This is a joke of a company. I told them it's the principle of the issue and that I do not like to be lied to, but that I'd take one for the team and eat the cost. I will never order from them anymore. I'd rather drive to Hatch, NM, and buy the roasted chili myself--at least I will be able to get a good southern New Mexican meal made by family owned businesses who are about their community. We Lived in Ruidoso NM for 31 years and recently relocated to Florida. It is nice with no snow but you can not find a good Hatch Chile anywhere. We have ordered a few time and have never been disappointed. Just got 5 pounds of roasted whole Chile. Arrived in perfect condition and we had rellanos that night and a green Chile omelette in the morning. Savored every bite. read more

Lived many years in Texas, and counted down each year until the big roasters in front of Central Market were filled with fresh hatch chiles. Those sights, smells and sounds get in your blood, and the roasted or fresh hatch options in much the rest of the country are pretty sparse. I tried to resist the urge to order from the Hatch Chile Store because it seemed so expensive and indulgent. Finally I caved and ordered a 10 lb box. Shipped overnight, the chiles were about the most beautiful I'd ever seen, fresh and big. 10 lbs felt like a good generous amount, and not so much as to be overwhelming to deal with. Didn't take long at all to give them a roast on the grill, peel, seed and prep for the freezer. So high praise for the store delivering on the promise of authentic hatch, trusted to be the heat level I desired. Is it worth it? Locally they're about $2.40 for a 4oz diced can, and look to be around $4 each via amazon, if the local is out of stock or doesn't carry. Those cans give you some hatch flavor, but are kind of sad, especially when only the diced version is available. The 10 lb box ended up being 5 lb prepped, or about 20 4oz freezer portions. Considering the cost of the shipped chiles and premium overnight shipping, that's about $3.40 each. So it's not the cheapest way to get your hatch on, but opening the box is exciting, roasting and prepping is a labor of love, and you end up with a much better product for a somewhat comparable cost per serving. As long as I'm far from Texas and the Southwest, come hatch season each year, the Chile Store will definitely be getting an order from me. read more

I received my first, but not last, order of New Mexico Hatch Chile from the Hatch Chile Store. I'm usually too hardened to be impressed with shipping companies these days but this Company really has their act together! I ordered Two Cases of Red Chile for the upcoming holidays. I was worried there would be some breakage (refer to my Monroe Chile experience) but The Chile Store uses a molded cardboard case that cradles 3 16 oz. Glass jars of Chile. The Company sells breakage insurance you can purchase, which I purchased but did not need.....No breakage whatsoever. Every jar was intact! The Sun Dried Chile I purchased is awesome. Kind of thick almost like reconstituted red chile powder but it's great! I added a bit of water because of the thickness, it was dense and I wanted Sauce. I will be ordering again soon. I am extremely disappointed. This batch tastes more like bell or banana peppers or tomatoes than green chile. It has absolutely no taste and would not peel after roasting. This is not authentic Hatch green chile that i get every year. Somebody tried to pull a fast one on me. read more

I really don't understand so many negative reviews here. I've been ordering from The Hatch Chile Store for several years and never had a problem. They have a support team available whenever I call. Last year they sent me one of my packages wrong, but immediately replaced it without having to return the mistaken order. I always make sure that I'm receiving the new crop of fresh roasted green chile. This year I was on the website and the order page didn't look right showing me a limited chile choice. We purchased several jars of "Pure Green Chile Hot" and the "Fresh Red Chile Medium" from this store while visiting Las Cruces, NM. We previously lived there. Upon returning home we tasted the Red Chile and both agreed that it was neither tasty or medium heat - it was boring. This morning, we opened a jar of the Pure Green Hot and mixed a heaping teaspoon with scrambled eggs. We tasted no heat or flavor with the first bite. I sampled it directly from the jar - the taste was disappointing and the heat was non-existent. I do not exaggerate, there is easily 3-4 time more heat in sriracha sauce. Anyone who grades these products higher than a 2 are either the company's family or friends. Most probably, many of those who approve of the products are visitors who have no tolerance for heat or knowledge of how good hatch chile should taste. They need to have someone knowledgeable of chiles and peppers perform their product's tasting and grading. Considering the quality, their products are significantly over priced. read more

The chili might be good but you'd be wasting your money buying their chili rellenos or their tamales. Not only are they ridiculously small, they are outrageously expensive( $4.00-$5.00 each item!!). They are, by far, the worst I've ever had! Save time and money and buy the frozen tamales at Costco or Sam's Club. They aren't great, but they are far better than what you get from this place. When I wrote directly to the company I got the standard "we are so sorry it wasn't to your liking. Here's a coupon for 10% off your next order." I spent $115 for one dozen chili rellenos and 10 tamales. They refunded me a whopping $17.00! By the way, their response to my critique on their website: they removed my comments! I've ordered from FCC about 4-5 times over the past few years. Their products were fantastic but pricey. I ordered 2 3 pks of salsas and sauces on 5/11. Today 5/26 we were notified it was finally shipped? No reason was given when I contacted customer service. My shipping charge was refunded because I had trouble getting the free shipping offer the night before when ordering online. I went ahead and paid shipping to make sure it arrived by 5/26. Here is the problem: I suggested to the "VP of Operations" that in order to avoid all of the above, the invoice could have indicated that the rest of the shipment was on backorder. She stated the program does not have that capability. I explained about "customer service" thinking it would HELP the business (as I am a business owner also and think that would be helpful). She agreed superficially and said she would forward it to the owner. She couldn't seem less concerned about the inconvenience. I am too busy for this hassle. In searching for Hatch Chiles I happened upon an ad for The Hatch Chile Store, which offered free shipping for a 10lb. box of mild chiles. I tried to order, but couldn't find how to take advantage of the free shipping offer. I emailed customer service, who replied that the ad was an error and they didn't offer free shipping on 10lb. boxes. I asked if they would be willing to honor the offer, since I had a screenshot of the still active ad showing free shipping. They would not honor it. Terrible customer service. I've had trouble with improperly roasted and peeled chiles from other places, and peeling off residual chile skin is a pain. The frozen chiles come shipped in dry ice. Five pound orders are separated into one pound packets so you can defrost only what you need. Prices are reasonable. Recommended. read more

Since I moved away from New Mexico, my sweet mother has sent me an annual green chile care package from the Hatch Chile Store. Up until this year, I had a good experience with the company and the taste of home they offer. This year, however, was a major bust. First off, there were major delays in shipping the product. I'm talking over a month after the initial estimated shipping date. To top it off, when I received the chile, it was already past the expiration date! It makes me think I was sent product that had been sitting in storage for some time. My mom contacted customer service and was told the date on the box was a mistake. I'm not buying it. We've purchased this chile for a number of years and even the individual bags of chile looked different--plain bags with no branding, whereas they've always had the Hatch Chile Store label before. My mother explained this but was completely dismissed with no refund or fresh batch of chile. Incredibly disappointed with the company's customer service. This company says they try hard, but in my case it did not work out well. First off, I ordered fresh red hatch peppers. I was not aware how fragile and easily spoiled this product was. And Hatch Chile Store (HCS) did little to make me wiser. Then, they have problems with their shipper, UPS. They deliver large numbers of orders to UPS at once and UPS does a poor and slow job of getting the orders into the UPS system. So if you ask UPS where your order is, they will likely say they don't have it. If you are dealing with a stable product (like dried, smoked peppers) this may not matter too much, but with a products where days matter (even hours), it is very confusing. And if you are planning on sharing a big order among a number of folks, this just does not work. I think they have good intentions, but I would recommend you shy away from the fresh products. Better off to buy them locally after someone else has taken the risk of shipment and you can just walk away from their deal if it turned out poorly. I ordered my Hatch chili's to be delivered with the 2 days shipping as recommended . They got here and where fresh and I roasted them here! Hatch Chile is the best chile!! I would give it 5 stars for taste..but 4 stars is for the price. I feel that it is a tad expensive for 5 lbs. By the time you roast and peel you are left with maybe 2 lbs..but, on the other hand, there was a time where I could not even get my beloved chile from NM..so I am happy for the availability..maybe higher demand will drive down the cost in the future..roasting, smelling, eating chile takes me back to the land of enchantment.. read more

For four years straight I've received rotten peppers in my box. I usually shrug it off as normal given 2 day shipping. This year, half of my 25# order was rotten. They sent me 12# (not 25# like they said they did) and even some were rotten in there. It's unacceptable given the $55 price tag and $55 shipping fee. Since sending me the 1/2 replacement order (some were rotten in there, too) they have been calling and emailing me asking me to change my review. Today, I picked up the phone and after explaining why I wouldn't be doing so the customer service agent HUNG UP on me. If it was a dropped call she would have called back. Look elsewhere. DON'T ORDER FROM THESE PEOPLE! I ordered Big Jim medium hot green chile for the Easter weekend. They sent me mild red chile. When I called to complain it took 3 days to get a call back. They wanted to reship the right order but at the same price. I said I shouldn't have to pay air since it will take me a week. They agreed to credit the shipping. But, when they shipped out the second order supposedly the correct product, they shipped it ground knowing it would be spoiled when it got here. I just tried to call them back at 4:20 NM time and of course no one answered the phone. I sent an email demanding the product not be delivered to my door because it would be rotten. I lived in NM as an adult for over 25 years always put up hatch chile while I was there. I plan on moving back this fall. Never again will I do business with this company. They treat people who are out of town and out of the area like they mean nothing. The hatch store provides horrible service when it comes to getting product to people outside the area. Don't waste your time or money use the New Mexico Connection I have ordered from them 4 times and NEVER had one problem. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I had a horrible experience last summer with another supposed "company" selling green chiles so I was a little nervous on my second try which was through Berridge Farms, no need to be!! Everything went exactly as promised and the chiles are fantastic! Outstanding folks to deal with!
