How much is that puppy in the window?
    Toshi I.

The place looks closed from the outside. After I rang the doorbell, I was greeted by two eager chihuahuas I wanted to check it out since it's the only store I know of that sells these addicting, delicious, hand-made almond toffee that make great gifts and is very popular at Christmas. I have a heart for earnest Mom n' Pop shops and support the American dream of trying to operate a business. The merch that this store carries is name brand, mostly kitschy items like Mickey Mouse accessories, costume jewelry, chotchkes and affordable $20 scarves. Reminds me of a tourist shop. If you are bi-lingual, no problem. I think the clientele is mostly Japanese or Japanese Hawaiian as the owner spoke almost exclusively in Japanese to us with very limited English. I absolutely will drop in again near the holidays for their biggest seller, the almond toffee!

Coffee sticks, crazy colored lipstick that becomes red/pink shades, manuka drops, popcorn. Lipstick stayed on even though I ate everything.

The storefront appears closed, but the sign says they're open. You will be greeted by two tiny dogs at the door and the kind shopkeeper comes to grant you entry. At first, it looks like a bunch of knickknacks and novelties. Then you'll see Coach, Kate Spade, LeSportSac, Kipling, jewelry, Japanese cosmetics, and other more luxurious items further inside. The shopkeeper is very friendly and seemed ecstatic to have a customer she could talk to in Japanese and broken English. (Because of the pandemic, I figured times are hard for the elderly...and so why not support a small business?) I bought lemon manuka honey drops, "magical lips" lipstick/lipstain, almond brittle popcorn, and some neat coffee sticks that Whoopi Goldberg raved about back in the day. Everything is dangerously delicious! This Magical Lips stuff is life-changing! It lasts nearly all day and doesn't rub off from wearing a mask just like the shopkeeper said! I had to return and buy more to give to friends! I want to try the other things she has for sale since I'm already having a good experience with her products. Unfortunately, the two adorable little pups at the door are not for sale.

I keep coming back to this place to get Paso Almonds which is my favorite sweets made in California. I can't stop eating this Almond Brittle!! I bought this as a souvenir for my family and friends too.

I've been a customer at this store for about two years now, and I wanted to share my recent…read moreexperiences that really stand out to me. Over the past year, l've noticed a big improvement in how things are run, and I truly think the new store manager deserves credit for that. In previous years, when I brought in clothes to sell, my experiences with some of the buyers felt very unprofessional, in fact I had multiple bad experiences with one of the female buyers that I notice still works there. She was very rude and condescending and now when I come in to sell I specifically don't want her to attend me. However, this year has been a completely different story. The newer buyers seem much better trained, more organized, respectful, and clear in how they take care of their customers. The whole process feels smoother and more customer-focused now, which makes a huge difference. In fact, today I had a question about the pricing of some of my items and the new store manager was very helpful and I left feeling very happy! Because of these positive changes, I actually look forward to bringing items in again, and I feel more confident in the process when working with the newer staff. Overall, I'm glad to see the progress and hope it continues in this direction. I have also recommended this location to my family and friends and they love the store!

The good: I love curated thrift shops like this because the…read moreclothes are already preselected for you and you don't have to dig as deep as you would in places like Goodwill (though Goodwill prices are definitely cheaper). So, there are definitely trendier items here and clothes are organized based on different trends as well (Y2K, designer, vintage, etc). I like the openness and brightness of the store. It resembles its other location in LA. I like that the racks aren't overcrowded with too many items so you can actually slide the coat hangers and look at the items. I got 2 jackets and culotte pants from here. Each were $12.99. The store was very nicely organized and even had an armchair to lounge on. The shoes were in good condition. The bad: I saw several tops with holes, snags or frayed fabric. They don't have healthcare worker discounts like the thrift shop across the street has. The interesting: You can bring in 5 items at a time in the fitting room. One of the workers at the register was on her phone a lot but perhaps she was looking up values/prices of the clothes she was labeling? They do buy clothes here.

Uptown Cheapskate is this fully stocked, stuffed to the brim, place to grab your vintage clothing…read more This shop really has a lot of clothing! I mean, really a lot! They have tons of a little bit of everything. They have tons of women's clothing, tons of men's clothing, tons of T-shirts, and a whole lot of shoes. Really! A lot of shoes! The store is what I would say is a step above shopping at a thrift store. What they do here is, offer the best of the best of vintage clothing. So, when you go in here, you know you're going to find high-quality items. This is not to say that they're cheap. For some, their prices may be considered a little bit high. But, again, what you're getting is the best of the best of vintage clothing, and sometimes you have to pay for that privilege. Depending on what you're looking for, this store may very well have it. From my experience, this store is most commonly geared towards a younger audience. They have tons of T-shirts, jeans, and a lot of stuff that could be considered on the more casual side of the picture. For example, when I shop a vintage store, I'm commonly looking men's sport coats and suits, and stuff along that line. They really don't have a good selection of these items. This is just something to keep in mind if you're looking for that kind of thing. But, on the other hand, if you're looking for all of the more casual style of clothing, they have a lot of it. Located on Hawthorne Boulevard, this store is fairly easy to find. They have a parking lot in the front and the rear, which sometimes can become kind of full. So, you may have to park on the street. This is because of the fact this store is a very popular shop. A lot of people come here, particularly on the weekends. And, when they have their sales, forget about it. The store is packed. One way or the other, if you're looking for that vintage piece of clothing, that really cool something, that T-shirt that you've been looking for forever, that pair of really cool shoes, or whatever else, this may be your place to find it.
