The best game store in SLC!!!! Whenever I'm looking for a new board game, Pokémon card or pieces for DND my first thought is to go to Hastur. They'll have everything you need and more! I have been on the hunt for Fromage for months and they were the only store that had it!! Staff is super helpful and willing to double check stock. They're also happy to suggest other games based on your areas of interest. They have a huge selection of games that you can play in the store! My son and I went in with his birthday money and he had been saving for a card that was over $200 and the guy working on 7/9/25 completely disregarded my son and basically told him these cards are for adults. My son has been been collecting pokemon for the last 4 years and has a collection that is valued at over $13000. Not a very good idea to judge a book by its cover. The employee that "helped" me was very rude and condescending, assumed I did not have the money to buy the cards or the knowledge of pokemon to understand how overpriced they were. Went into this store to show my son and his GF the establishment. It was during a pre release night for MTG and it was busy. We asked for assistance, and they ignored us and eventually they helped us. We wanted to buy some MTG singles and they told us "If you dont see it we dont have it!!!" Dont they have a database to search cards??? Highly unprofessional, Glad my wife stayed in the car when we went inside. Hastur has been around forever. You don't get that kind of durability in a store that's cutting corners. Their game selection, especially RPGs, is immense. You'll see stuff at Hastur that you won't see anyplace else. They have a solid comics collection, a phenomenal miniatures collection, lots of dice and CCGs. They're one of the only game stores in the valley that maintain a used games-for-sale inventory (though it's shrinking). The store has gone through some pretty significant changes over the years, showing they are trying their best to offer customers what customer's want. I've never had an issue with customer service. Even on Free Comic Book day they manage to keep things going. For me, the long-time manager who knows almost everything about games has always been helpful and considerate. Their prices are pretty much MSRP. They will buy used stuff, but they pay fairly low and sell the good stuff maybe a tad high. Then again, nobody has to buy or sell (obviously). And the shop's got to keep the lights on, so you can't really blame them for that. The kiddies that drop in with huge piles of Pokémon cards and expect to get what the magazine price lists show must surely be annoying... Nobody's going to buy cards if they can't see 'em! read more

*THESE PEOPLE WILL SCAM YOU* Went here to sell around $850 in a commander deck. Got offered $120 for the whole deck I looked up how much the cards were before I went in so I knew this was a red flag. Went to another place sold around 15-20 cards from the same deck got offered $255 cash. Sad thing this was the one of the managers. Stopped by Hastur Games to check it out since I just moved to the area. Pretty nice selection, store is pretty full with all types of items. However, the prices are terrible. I ended up buying a couple of their own MTG card packs. Was surprised at how many duplicates I got from just two packs, and the value of the cards was abysmal. Went here looking for a new D & D starter kit. Didn't find the kit, but they had lots of other games and trading cards. It's always intimidating walking into a gaming store, with people playing games at tables and on computer, because the nerd level is on overdrive and you never feel as nerdy as the rest. Even so, I didn't let it stop me from having a good experience. I had went on a Friday and got some Magic: The Gathering cards as I wanted to start playing. I went the following day and picked up Muchkin and a copper set of role playing dice. I was very excited to get those as they are solid copper and shinny *OH SHINNY!*. They had gemstone ones as well. Bob the owner was there that day and was very informative, knowledgeable, and friendly when helping me. He attended me and when I was done he helped others. I found that the second day when it was more empty, the atmosphere was much better. The manager that had helped me the day before must have been on some serious games since he was friendly, but no where near as relaxed as the owner! Their comic section is very small, just a rack. It's mainly dedicated to gaming and all the supplies. They carry the games you most likely won't pick up at Walmart and Target, like D & D, Pathfinder, Elder Signs, Star Trek, Star Wars, Warhammer, Muchkin and so on, but may find at bookstore chains like Barnes and Noble. read more

I had been to Hastur a couple of times in the past and have always had a good experience there. This time however, today, wasn't so great. The store itself is awesome and has a ton of stuff. On this particular visit we were looking for a wash for a couple of miniatures we had just painted. Their selection was awesome. They had I think 3 different paint brands to choose from and a ton of colors. Not only that, miniatures selection was fantastic. We ended up picking up a new one that we didn't need but we really liked it. So, from a selection perspective- 5 stars. Would recommend. So why a low rating? The wash we were interested in didn't have the price marked. Not a big deal. We were close to the counter so we asked the associate there if he could tell us how much the washes were. He responded by saying he didn't know at all. They range from $3.95 to $7.95 but he would have to ring them up to find out. It just wasn't helpful. At all. We looked at the rest of the paints and they seemed to be prices by brand, so it should have been kind of easy to tell us based on the brand we were asking about. But, besides not knowing right off what the price was, he also was not wearing a mask. He had just been helping someone and maybe he had worn at that point, I don't recall but at that point when we asked him he was not. He did have hanging around his neck, I think. Then he stepped away from the counter and was working on something in a corner of the store. We made our final selections and then kind of hung around the register waiting to make our purchase. He didn't move. We were right where he could see us. Thankfully another employee saw us and left where he was arranging things in the store and helped us. He apologized for the wait and was very courteous. While he was helping us. The first employee not wearing a mask and working on the sales floor started sneezing. All of a sudden we were glad he wasn't helping us. If not for the overall not helpfulness of the first employee or him sneezing without a mask, this would have been a 5 star visit. The selection is amazing. And the other employee was great. Today must have just been a bad day for the other guy. And those happen. read more

I absolutely love this store. The owner is incredibly friendly, and offers so much help and advice. He has played nearly all of the games in his store, and will even sit down and play a game with you! Great environment, large selection and a TON of demos to try out. I visited a Game Haven before coming here for my first time because I wanted to find a shop I wanted to regularly go to. I'm absolutely blown away by the difference in displays. I can't even compare this place to Game Haven anymore. It's just absolutely amazing. Very cozy atmosphere, a massive selection of MTG, Flesh and Blood, Pokémon, and various other tabletop games. If you're interested in Warhammer, MTG, or D&D, they seem to be the biggest games here. Pokémon also seems to have a pretty steady flow of players. The employees here are also very helpful and either know their info or are readily able to look the info up immediately. I live a little ways away from here and I refuse to go to another store. Great for picking up games and hobbies, however their comics selection is lackluster and they hardly keep said comics in a condition making them worth buying. Go here for picking up supplies for roleplaying and strategy games, but for comics I'd head over to Dr. Volt's Comic Connection or Night Flight Comics. read more

I would honestly give this store negative stars if it was an option. Me and my best friend are Whatnot live streamers and we went in there to purchase some Pokémon Tina and Holo cards for our stream. The staff was only helping ONE female when there were 6 to 7 others needed help. 3 dudes swarming this girl and only helping her. There prices are ridiculous and up charged on Holo cards. I wouldn't recommend this to any of our followers or anyone looking for a good collectible trading card game shop period. Worst experience of my life. Will NEVER go back. You want fair prices and top notch customer service then drive the extra 10 minutes and go to game grid. Save yourself the trouble and waste of a trip. Staff needs some serious customer service training. The boys in particular. It's not about flirting with a girl at the counter guys. The employee here today (I think he's the owner) can only be described as a jerk to kids. My 7 year old picked out a comic to buy and was walking around the store with it while we browsed other games. He came stomping up to him and angrily said "IS THIS YOURS?!". My boy had no idea what to do when a full grown man was trying to intimidate him. Two minutes later my two boys were a little too silly (playing tag) and I asked them to stop running and come over to me. The same 7 year old walked by the employee on his way to me and the man stepped out quickly in front of my son and threw his hands up in the air like he couldn't believe what he was witnessing. I told him to calm down, back away from my son and let kids be kids. It's too bad, this guy ruined this shop for me. Now I have to find another game store to go to. read more

Great selection of products! The store doesn't look that big, but you'll be surprised how much of a supply they have. The real reason to go here is the staff though. I love the staff here. I went into the store looking for a board game. I didn't know that it had been out of print for nearly 10 years, so of course they didn't have it. I felt really dumb and apologized, but the owner was very friendly. He did some research on the game while I was shopping around, and he found out that it was coming back into print in about 6 months time. He offered to put in an order for one and hold it for me, he didn't make me pay him up front. Sure enough, 6 months later I get a call from them to tell me that they had the game! read more

Very, very, very extensive and nice selection of dice, board and card games, extremely impressive there. There is a smattering of other stuff, such as non-game related accessory and figure items, but not any great amount. They also had a few boxes of comic books, though it is not clear why as there clearly is no special prominence given to them at all. There are quite a few gaming tables set up, so this is well worth a look if you're into any of the types of games I mentioned. read more

It's a great store and they have a great collection of Magic cards. I love going here to pick up Magic singles because it's close to home. Sometimes I would visit their website to put in an order so I can pick them up on the way home from work. They lose two stars because their inventory is not up to date. It's the 4th time, I've made an order on their website then I show up and they tell me that they can't either find the card or don't have it in stock which is kind of a waste of my time stopping there when I could've went to another store that has it in stock. There was one Magic card that I was looking for and many of the game stores I looked at didn't have it in stock. So I stopped by at Hastur to see if they had it in stock, they have this kiosk where you can check their inventory, which is nice. So I used their kiosk and found they have a card that I've been looking for in stock, as a matter of fact, their kiosk said they had 2 in stock, so I reserved the card through their kiosk. After I reserved the card, I approached one of the employees to let him know that I'm ready to check out and purchase the card that I reserved through their kiosk. So the employee saw my reservation and went to the back to look for the card. About 15 minutes later, the employee came out and said that they're not in stock. So again, they wasted my time and I left in disappointment. read more

Having frequented Hastur's for several years now I can say that this place is a gaming institution. It speaks volumes that they have been around so long. The stock is vastly improved recently, and notably in the Pathfinder game area. I have always been treated politely and attentively whenever I visit. It really takes a lot to run one of these shops as you get all kinds coming through. A good game shop is more than just a stop on the way to get a loaf of bread, it's a place where you get what you give, like Cheers! read more

Awhile ago I would have given this store a zero stars. The folks who worked there were rude, innattentive and plain unpleasant. I live very close by and have avoided this store like the plague despite being a fan of roleplaying games and Magic. However yesterday I found myself needing something I knew they carried and I knew my new hobby connection did not. So I braved the experience. And I was pleasently surprised. A helpful and polite young man helped me out. He answered questions and assisted me quickly. They have a wide and deep selection of nearly everything gaming related and that's always been a plus. It was only the personell that kept me away. I'm going to have to give this place a new look. EDIT: I've gone back a few times and have continued to see the improvement in behavior and attitude of the staff. Far more a fan of this place now. read more

I've been going to Hastur's for many years, and at times they've been uneven as far as stock and service. However lately they have taken a few big steps towards improving the layout and function of the store, the stocks of games and accessories seems the best it's been in a long time, and the staff are all doing a bang-up job on taking care of people. They have even responded to the pricing of some of their local competitors, by doing some price matching. They've really earned all of my gaming business lately, and I'm happy to go in. Customer service here is abysmal. I have shopped here for years and have always been treated like a wart. The employees in sales always treat you like you are an inconvenience. I attempted to exchange a Warhammer 40k part - a land raider for a land raider crusader. Both were equally priced. The sales clerk would not allow it. I will not spend another dime here. There's a much better wargame and board game shop in sandy on 90 s. I'd recommend their selection over this joke any day. read more

Folks, this is Yelp in action. Apparently the owner saw my post and he desired to make things better. He apologized for the poor customer service as well as lack of swords. He told me to tell him when I'd be by next and that he would personally help me with any of my hobby needs. I wish he COULD help me out but as I previously stated I was only there with friends and I am personally not into hobby games. It was not my intention to harm a business especially one that is locally owned, as I feel I want to support small businesses and local business owners. Although I write the majority of my reviews as a joke with a side of seriousness I do understand that these effect the outcome of possible future revenue. So I feel like Yelp truly is serving it's purpose in shining a light on the good businesses and giving advice to those that may be lacking. It is nice to see an owner scouring these pages looking for ways to better their shops. Robert seems like a very nice and sincere gentleman who wants to better any short or rude behavior of employees as well as give a great shopping experience. So for Robert's sake shop at Hastur if you're a Magic playing, puzzle assembling, model painting type of person. They have weekly tournaments for many of your favorite games as well as what I imagine would be improved customer service. How do I know the customer service has improved since I previously stated I won't be back? Im sad to say I had my first famous "bad costumer service" From the owner himself. I was buying single dice, and we went up to pay and asked how much they were. I wasn't paying attention to the prices because hell, I thought the employee would know what they would be. My friend with me said "I think they were like 75 cents or something" because he didn't know either. The man walked my dice in his hands over to the counter just to set them down in front of the single dice, and sift through them to try and match them from the categories. He pulled a similar one out and said "its one of these ones, they're $1.40 each". So he walked back over to the register leaving my dice behind, so I picked them up and brought them over and he was like "Oh you still want to buy them?" Like why was he surprised? Did he really think im that cheap? So I bought them even after all that awkwardness, and on our way out he said "Normally you could get away with stuff like that with my employees but because I own the store I know my product". So yea, that was my story, i've heard from people that they've had really bad costumer service, but now i've finally experienced it for myself. read more
