Happily, we noticed the space with its large door open on our next pass and we popped into view an interesting comics exhibit. They had a nice art activity set up on a stage in the corner, which a number of kids were enjoying. The space is nice - very high ceilings make it feel pretty roomy. Celebrated my husband's early birthday here on a Friday night. Short North was busy but we got…read morethere early to make a candle before our class so we had plenty of time to get settled. The team did a great job helping us celebrate by making a subtle birthday sign. They were also all very kind and helpful throughout the entire night. The candle making was easy and straight forward, and it was able to set while we did our class. Before class started they took our drink orders and they came quickly. We got a lemon drop and a paint water martini. Both were very tasty! Only a few people were on time, but they did give a few minutes grace period to let people find parking. By the time we got started the vibes were fun. Yahfa was our artist and she had an awesome Y2K playlist going. She explained all the steps clearly and gave us ample time to paint. We did a black light picture so most of the class was in the dark with the paint glowing. As someone who is not an artist this was so much fun! The whole process took about 2 hours, and it was easy to follow along from both her instructions and seeing her work projected on the tv. The team also made sure to regularly check in to see if we needed anything or wanted any drinks. At the end of our time, our paintings were mostly dry and our candle was set. We were also able to choose a painting from a number of options as a birthday gift for my husband. It was very sweet and a nice cherry on top of our night! We are so happy with how it went that we are already planning to go back and bring some friends along too! The concert…read morehall was very comfortable, seating was cushy, temperature varied a bit at times when venting fans kicked on, and sound and light features during the show were both fantastic. We were several rows back (ten?) from the stage and views were terrific. Security upon entry was professional. Bar service was fast and appeared to have ample selection. Backstage area was also comfortable and allowed for table and chair seating in lounge meeting room. Building is easy to access via ride service with drop off and pick up point nearby.

Each production has pushed a boundary, and while a few company members reappear in different productions, they generally bring fresh faces and voices to each new story. I'm really excited for what the AVLT company plans to bring with the new season, and I encourage people to try them out. One of AVLT's best features is their "Pay what you want" program - just show up, and if the show isn't sold out you can get in for as little or as much as you can afford. If you like the show well enough to throw a few more dollars at the fishbowl on the way out, so much the better! These guys are good, they're local, and they're unique. Go see a show!

I found a Groupon for a discount (although if you go on their social media they have an even better…read morediscount for April classes). I came here on a Thursday evening just to do something creative and explore Columbus a bit more. Despite the GPS getting me there fine, i struggled a bit to find the entrance itself but came in to find a big bright studio full of color and fun paintings, with the instructor on the phone helping other lost folks guidance on how to get there. I did manage to find signs that guided me to the entrance thankfully! The instructor and owner introduced herself and we eventually got started. She took us step by step and broke down each step to the size of brush and way to do each technique on the canvas. She walked around and helped all of us along the way. It was a small class of 7 so we got lots of one-on-one attention but I can see how in a more packed class that would be a challenge. She was very patient, encouraging, and super complimentary which I loved! She didn't rush us out of the studio even though we ran late, and since we were a small class she even gifted us a free glitter application on our paintings which is normally $1 extra. The cool thing is she also sells older paintings for $5, so you can check out previous projects and shop before, during, and after you paint. It's a BYOB kind of place but she has corkscrews, wine glasses, and a deal with the bar next door if you choose to order food. The only negative is that the class was supposed to start at 6:30 but we didn't start until after 7 which ended up having us end much later than 9:30, but nothing that would deter me from coming back here and bringing friends as well!

The studio space itself is well-maintained, organized, and conducive to a productive and focused creative process. They offer all the tools you need to create and additional clay can be purchased throughout the session if needed. The selection of glazes that they offer to finish your projects are beautiful. Additionally, the Peggy McConnell Arts Center frequently hosts events and exhibitions that provide opportunities for students to showcase their work and connect with the local art community.

The theatre is intimate and there is no bad seat in the house. The chairs were comfortable too. Columbus is so lucky to have such great talent like Derek DiCenzo, Reggie Jackson and Robert Floyd. The Bobby Floyd Trio's show "All That Jazz" began with a documentary about this incredible photo taken for Esquire in 1958 Harlem that gathered together so many great jazz musicians. Bobby, Derek & Reggie rocked the stage with Dizzy, Sonny, Basie, Thelonious. The ticket prices are quite reasonable too.

Independents' Day is the background of Grand Theft Auto meets New Age wonderlust. It is Thrash…read moreMetal mixed with childhood innocence and unvarnish creativity. It is Gallery Hop circa 1994. In the ubex cool section of Franklinton ID decks the rusted industrial remains of Rich and Town streets and everything inbetween with gritty street paintings, dilapidated sculptures, wood works, and various other crafts from local artists and artisans; from hippies to hip-hop, from punk to pedestrian, from the quintessential quirky to the conspicuously clean, it seems everyone here is independent of the social memes dictating art and are free to be themselves. Sideshows and psychics add an out-of-the-margin and off-the-mainstream appeal, while a zone of mythic creature and exotic cultural performances add a wonderment even the most discerning fantasy geek will love. Other areas featured an off-the-wall future-seeing exhibits, a graffiti beautiful urban jungle, and an area dedicated to sustainability themed by the four elements of classic thought. A children section rounds up the zones of the 2016 ID. Art is everywhere: out in mud meadows, on sidewalks, down alleys, a visual feast of beauty and weirdness. The air is filled with music, live bands spanning hip-hop to grunge, from electric jazz to hot R&B. Beer tents of crafts, 20-some food truck including the best in town are there for hunger and thirst while venders with unique and fun products add a look-see rivaling art fest. Of quick escapes from the elements are The Rehab Pub, Land Grant brewers, and the stripped down environs of Strongwater. The Idea Foundry is good for a walk through as is 200 Rich. My first time experiencing Independence Day finally, after years of it, my schedule, and my motivation not being in the same place at the same time. I could kick myself for not forcing myself into going in years past. This goes on my yearly summer festival must-do list.

I loved ID back on Gay Street, but now we have Moonlight Market to fill that void. So I definitely celebrate the move to Franklinton. Franklinton Arts District is reminiscent of the Short North of yore -- it's so raw and alive and bursting with potential. That's exactly why ID belongs there. I swear each year the festival manages to up its game, with better art, more organization, and tastier food and drinks -- all while keeping the feeling that a bunch of friends threw it together overnight. To me, the image of simplicity means loads of well-orchestrated details happened behind the scenes. Some highlights for me: +the art -- it's truly spectacular and wonderfully bizarre. +the food/drinks -- so many local choices! +idea foundry -- this is such a seamless fit for ID; I loved watching all the local artisans working on their craft. +the craft show -- I'm not really a crafts person, and I couldn't get enough of this area. So many beautiful and affordable items! +the music -- several well-placed stages with awesome local bands. Independents' Day is my favorite festival of the year, and I can't wait to see it get better and weirder each year. It has great energy and is hosted by truly fantastic people.
