Ladies should AVOID this place for any major repairs! I first came across this quaint little garage while driving past. I was in need of an ABS wheel sensor replacement for 1 tire. They fixed it but I was back the very next day as the ABS wheel sensor light came back on again. I had already purchased the part needed BUT Greg, the shop manager, told me I needed a specific brand, otherwise their code reader wouldn't clear the code out. So I went to the parts store THEY used and paid $15 MORE than the AutoZone part....the exact SAME part....just the manufacturer was different. Luckily I was able to return the unused part to AutoZone for a refund. The mechanic checked it out, drove the vehicle several miles and gave it an "okay". I was told that the light might come on again because I needed to have both the upper AND lower suspension arms replaced. Because my experience was so intricate, for the sake of the Reader's time, I will try to summarize everything. I went back to have the lower suspension arms done first. I normally buy my own parts and only pay for time and labor.... saves substantially. Greg convinced me to apply for a repair financing service that they were promoting. It's actually a good deal where the financing company pays the repair shop up front and the customer makes monthly installments. My repairs were going to be a little in excess of $1,000. Since I got approved for $1600, I decided to have any small additional work needing to be done... done....like oil change, spark plugs...little things. So far, so good, right? WRONG! I looked at the itemization of everything being done and noticed two things: this itemization didn't include what the original mechanic working on my vehicle had recommended and that the markup on the cost of parts was DOUBLE what I could have gotten them for at AutoZone had I bought them myself! The mechanics were then told NOT to talk directly to the customers anymore which I didn't like. If YOU are working on MY vehicle, I need to be able to talk to YOU, given that Greg had only been the shop manager for a couple of months and knew very little about auto repair. I had to call Harvey, the owner, to get the whole mess straightened out. I understand that mechanics need to make money but the markup on the auto parts is DOUBLE and is ripping off the customer! I ended up staying in excess of 8 HOURS, until well AFTER closing while Will (one of the mechanics at the Norfolk location) worked on my vehicle! And he STILL didn't finish! He ended up breaking the ABS wheel sensor on ANOTHER tire and had to replace it!! Over 8 hours! And Greg made SURE to spend as close to the $1600 as he could! Granted, the vehicle is an older model with some rust around the nuts and bolts but what happened next is reprehensible, totally unprofessional and dangerous.... the mechanic filled several parts and spaces with grease! I can only assume that he was pissed that this had taken until 2 hours past closing ... and he STILL wasn't done! The owner called me and asked me to bring the vehicle to the Virginia Beach location. I did and that is when I found out about the grease being just packed everywhere in the ABS wheel sensor and other places that SHOULD NOT have had grease! This caused the sensor to not register properly and, once again, the sensor light was back on! The mechanic at the Virginia Beach shop cleaned everything out but I will NEVER set foot into either one of these garages again! I don't feel safe and cannot confirm that my life may have been in danger BUT ANYTIME you have someone either deliberately (as I suspect) or because of lack of knowledge.... mess around with your vehicle, it can have deadly consequences! Post Note: It has been several months now since last being seen at Harvey's and the ABS sensor light STILL makes an appearance every now and again. I am having the upper arms replaced by someone else more reliable, transparent and honorable. Harvey seemed nice but at the end of the day, it still comes down to money. What I experienced should NEVER have happened!!! read more
