Visited Bloomington and had to try the ube ice cream here! I'm Filipino, and wow it was so authentic and flavorful! I wish this was available in Indy. It wasn't too sweet, and they give a big scoop. There's so many different flavors to choose from, and everyone working there was very nice. There's not many parking options nearby, so recommend walking to it. There's a few seats inside. My ice cream-loving child cannot eat ice cream. He CAN eat frozen yogurt. Also, the "vegan options." There was one. A soy vanilla. So my child who wanted chocolate frozen yogurt got vanilla soy milk ice cream. Meh. But the scoops were very large. Good flavor. Nice creaminess. It's clear from the never ending line that Hartzell's is a popular ice cream shop in town. It was clear why from the very first sample. They make ice cream in house daily and have very unique flavors, such as: chocolate basil, ube, mango, lemon poppy see cake batter, green tea, etc. I opted for one scoop split between ube and mango. It was truly the most perfect combo as those two flavors were meant to be together. The ice cream is sooo flavorful. The staff were nice and accommodating as I tried a few flavors. Based on all the local reviews, I was super excited that we had time to try this place today. We did not run into overly helpful or friendly staff but that's fine. What was shocking for me was the price. Hubs paid and I did not know how much it was until after we left. Reviews weren't mentioning any issues with price and they looked reasonable on the menu but I didn't study the prices. The two scoop cup was $6.25, tiny, and I'm fairly certain I received a scoop and 1/4. Petty? Perhaps, but I like to get my money's worth. The ice cream was creamy. Hartzell's is your typical neighborhood ice cream shop with a colorful interior and some limited bar top seating. The pricing seems in line with what I've seen at similar shops. A small line was forming when we arrived, but the staff came off a bit abrasive and seemed more interested in rushing everyone through so they could sit in the back of the store. Overall the ice cream had good flavor and was very creamy. I'm a bit more basic and got a small cup of Oreo Cream, but my husband has a Chocolate sweet tooth so he got the Chocolate Lovers Sundae and said it was delicious! One of the best ice cream spots in Bloomington! Hartzell's is a small local business right in the heart of Kirkwood near Sample Gates. Most of the parking nearby is metered but there's a ton of it in the area (side streets and paid lots). We went in last night and had our ice cream within 5 minutes even with a line - the employees were on top of everything and very efficient. They have tons of different flavors with a variety of vegan, low-cal, etc options so everyone's included. I got the vanilla gelato which was super smooth and sweet, only a half scoop (smallest size) was more than enough for me. I could be saying this because it's National Ice Cream Day, but I feel like no matter how old you are, the words 'do you want ice cream?' evoke memories of a far-departed childhood: ice cream truck swinging by the house, rushing out for the standard ice cream sandwich that was oh-so-processed and, yet, oh-so-good. When I went to IU for college, I settled for dining hall ice cream for the first two years. After all, I had a plethora of meal points to spend and with no solvent income, hunting down the town's best ice creameries factored very, very low on my priority list. Cut to junior and senior year and I dove into the dining scene with a furor: it was ice cream season, and no one could (or would dare) stop me. On a Friday night, walking down Kirkwood, I discovered Hartzell's. A local spot that evoked fond memories of my Dairy Queen blizzards, the line was ALWAYS out the door, and one taste of the ice cream was all I needed to see why: it's creamy and luscious, but not overtly so, and each mix-in is given its place to really shine, from the most basic to the truly exotic. It's National Ice Cream Day, so we had to get some ice cream! It was a hot Sunday afternoon, and so they were busy, but it seemed we came in at a good time; the place was packed but no one was ordering; everyone was already eating or standing back trying to figure out what to order. The assortment of flavors is quite good; the pricing is a little confusing at first, but they do a good job of separating the lists of which ice creams have a 70 cent per scoop extra charge. I decided to go with some classic flavors since this was my first visit; mint chocolate chip and chocolate lovers in a waffle cone. Both flavors were excellent. The chocolate was a rich real chocolate taste and the mint chip was perfect - fresh mint flavor with just the right amount of real chocolate chips. The texture of the ice cream was smooth and wonderful. This is premium ice cream, but didn't seem over the top in the butterfat department; in other words, it wasn't too rich to still be refreshing on a hot day. The waffle cone was fresh and crisp. Next trip I will try some of the more unusual flavors that carry that 70 cent extra charge per scoop chocolate basil was almost gone today so I'm guessing that is a good one! Green tea, cold brew coffee and salted caramel all looked great! Seating was totally full, but there is a nice little park across the street where we found a bench in the shade. The dirty vanilla (has 4 different types of vanilla & vanilla bean or something to that effect) was pretty good but Ben & Jerry's-good is contestable. There is seating on the right and the food/order counter on the left as you enter. I guess I was expecting there to be a lot more choices on hand, but I still found some to try before ordering. I went with the coffee flavored ice cream and must admit I really enjoyed the flavor. Very creamy texture too and just cold enough to stay mostly solid, but not cause brain freeze. Service was friendly and efficient. Napkins and spoons are over along a wall in the dining area if you get a bowl like I did. This is a local Bloomington favorite, so of course I had to check it out for myself. It's at a busy intersection (Dunn and Kirkwood) but on this sunny weekday I managed to find a parking spot right out front, practically begging me to go to Hartzell's. I'd like to think it was in the cards for me to visit that day! Customer service was A+++, largely because the staffperson had a literal pep in her step and bounced around telling us about all our options. They didn't flinch when I asked to sample my sixth flavor as I tried to make a decision. I went with the cookie dough, and it was good, but not spectacular. They unfortunately did not have the chocolate basil I read so much about. Give their green tea ice cream a try if you like green tea - phenomenal! I want to talk to you about chocolate basil ice cream. (You read that right) One word: WHOA! What crazy genius put these two unexpected ingredients together?! Did he/she mistake the basil for mint? Could there even be a logical explanation for why one would use the same ingredient that one uses for a caprese salad in your standard ice cream shoppe? Regardless, THANK YOU. For someone who doesn't care for chocolate ice cream, my mind has changed thanks to this pungent, refreshing flavor. If you see it in the case, don't hesitate to at least sample it. You will be surprised in the best way possible. Yum, yum, YUM! The other flavor I tried, bavarian cream, did not have as strong of a flavor as the chocolate basil, which I found disappointing since I was spazzing out over the first flavor. It reminded me of an underwhelming vanilla. However, I can't be too harsh with this criticism, because technically bavarian cream is usually combined with alcohol or stuffed inside a pastry aka other flavors. I love the close location to IU. It's a small-ish shop tucked away on Dunn across from a park that I always see occupied with people. I'm not sure what they do there all day but I'm under the impression a number of them, if not all, are homeless. There's window seating perfect for people watching and other tables as well. The person wad really helpful and I got to try all the flavors I was curious about. They didn't have many crazy flavors (I wanted to try the cherry Wasabi I read about in a previous review) on my visit, which was on a Sunday afternoon. I tried the ceremonial green tea which was pretty good but I prefer my matcha to be stronger (if you've had traditional matcha, you'll know it's ridiculously strong and bitter). I ended up getting a small cup, which you're allowed one scoop. However, I could get two half scoops of two different flavors, so I got the lemon custard and the dark chocolate basil. As a note, each one of those half scoops was a full scoop in my eyes, so the portions are big and prices reasonable. I'm glad I went small! The lemon custard had a lemon flavor but nothing overwhelming. I used it to cut through the rich and dark tones of the chocolate that had a hint of Basil. The ice cream was creamy but there are some tiny ice crystals here and there. All in all, good stuff and I'm always up for supporting local businesses. I would have liked more exotic flavors, but I guess they were going the more tame route this weekend. Note: minimum $4 for credit cards. Also, it might be better to walk over. He was excited and chose the flavor after presenting the coupon. While I wasn't paying attention when he was ordering, he was asked by the staff if he wanted one or two scoops. Of course, he said two (without knowing the 2nd scoop is full-priced, NOT free!). So I ended up paying the 2nd scoop because it was already in the cup. I don't like the way they do business. It's pretty sneaky they do that to my kid by asking if he wants one or two scoops (which I am not aware of) without telling him or me that the second scoop is NOT free... I thought it would be an excellent experience for my kid to order something himself. Surprisingly underwhelming. I was invited to come here for their vegan options and left feeling very disappointed. Upon walking in, I couldn't find anything that was labeled vegan. Nothing on the menus and none of the ice cream or sorbet flavors below the counter were labeled, so i decided to ask. The young lady behind the counter was very quiet and hard to understand, but I eventually figured out what she was saying... It turns out they didn't have any vegan ice cream, but they did have two very strange sorbet flavors that were vegan and nothing else. The apple cider one was bleh and I settled on melon, even though I wasn't a big fan of that either. The prices were outrageous too. $8 for two little scoops of sorbet? I felt bad that a good friend treated me, so I didn't complain in person. The restroom was also locked up and we couldn't get anyone's attention for a key. It was busy, but service in general seemed slow given the amount of workers.
