Lots of unique flavors of ice cream! I had the lemon poppy seed cake batter and ube with a chocolate shell topping and it was delicious. I would definitely come back if I'm in the area again.

It's clear from the never ending line that Hartzell's is a popular ice cream shop in town. It was clear why from the very first sample. They make ice cream in house daily and have very unique flavors, such as: chocolate basil, ube, mango, lemon poppy see cake batter, green tea, etc. I opted for one scoop split between ube and mango. It was truly the most perfect combo as those two flavors were meant to be together. The ice cream is sooo flavorful. The staff were nice and accommodating as I tried a few flavors. I'd 100% stop again if I were ever in town.

Based on all the local reviews, I was super excited that we had time to try this place today. We did not run into overly helpful or friendly staff but that's fine. What was shocking for me was the price. Hubs paid and I did not know how much it was until after we left. Reviews weren't mentioning any issues with price and they looked reasonable on the menu but I didn't study the prices. The two scoop cup was $6.25, tiny, and I'm fairly certain I received a scoop and 1/4. Petty? Perhaps, but I like to get my money's worth. The ice cream was creamy. The pumpkin pie had nice flavor but the treat was not worth the price for me. Disappointing.

Hartzell's is your typical neighborhood ice cream shop with a colorful interior and some limited bar top seating. The pricing seems in line with what I've seen at similar shops. A small line was forming when we arrived, but the staff came off a bit abrasive and seemed more interested in rushing everyone through so they could sit in the back of the store. Overall the ice cream had good flavor and was very creamy. I'm a bit more basic and got a small cup of Oreo Cream, but my husband has a Chocolate sweet tooth so he got the Chocolate Lovers Sundae and said it was delicious! Note: they do up-charge you for using a credit card vs cash.

Hartzell's had a good variety in flavors and decent prices. They were all out of waffle cones, but I survived. I got one scoop of lemon custard and one of lemon poppy seed, both were really good!

Yo. If anyone is in town you must go. I repeat. You must go to this ice cream parlor. They have multiple flavors and varieties but I will say this sherbet was amazing. I literally devoured it in about 2 minutes. I kid you not. Atmosphere Great clean and lots of smell good ice cream Pricey: Not to pricey. The price will make you want to come back for more. All in all this place great. When ever we come back to Bloomington best believe we will stop here and get LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF SHERBET. Yummy I approve always. Scale of 1 to 10 for ice cream. I give it a 25

I LOVE Hartzell's ice cream. I love a good unique ice cream flavor, and boy do they have unique options. However, they also have a wide variety of traditional flavors. So this ice cream shop can accommodate everyone's tastes! This time around I got the mocha chip and it was delicious. I'm a total sucker for coffee flavored everything. I also tried a sample of their cake batter and it was also amazing. Now, I think this is the only ice cream shop left on Kirkwood. In the warmer months, students are lined up out the door, but the line moves fast.

Hartzells is my go-to ice cream spot in Bloomington, a title which is not earned easily as ice cream is one of my favorite foods. You may be overwhelmed with the plethora of options upon walking in (there are so many!), and that is fair. Let this review serve as a guide to help you order. To start your decision making process, you'll want to determine whether you're in the mood for a scoop or two of classic ice cream, or if instead you want a soft-serve based treat. If you're looking for the former, you'll be excited to know Hartzells has many flavors, including a number of non-dairy/vegan options. Take a moment to glance over the few freezers full of many flavors. The staff has always let me sample a flavor if I'm stuck between a few options. If you're looking for something other than the typical scoop in a cone or dish, I highly recommend their Spinners, which is what I get every time I go. Spinners are soft-serve based treats that you can mix toppings into; it's basically their equivalent to DQ's blizzards or Culver's concrete mixers. I'm not sure what they do differently, but Hartzell's has the best vanilla soft-serve I have ever had... it's pure magic. It's the key to making my decision to order a spinner so easy every time. They also do not skimp on the toppings they mix into the spinners, making it the perfect frozen treat. The Hartzell's service, which usually consists of IU students working as a part-time job, is always friendly and helpful. I know they appreciate any tips you'll give them! The inside is a bit small to eat in so I recommend taking your ice cream to go and walking down Bloomington's Kirkwood Ave, a busy stretch of shops, bars, and restaurants. Overall this is a must-stop if you're in an ice cream mood in Bloomington, but warning: be ready for lines, especially if the weather is nice!

Do not bother coming here for non-dairy ice cream. They only had vanilla! The kiddo liked the Blue Moon ice cream!

They also have paletas (Mexican popsicles), aguas frescas, flavoured cappuccino, crepes, tortas and more sweet and savoury Mexican snacks. I've had tons of gourmet ice cream, and this was up there with the best of them. I wanted to try one of the less common Mexican flavours but lots sounded good, and they let me sample a few. I sampled the ron con pasas/eggnog with raisins and queso fresco, and both were really good but I decided to get a scoop of queso fresco. I expected it to be like a cheesecake flavour but it was a little different in a way that's hard to put my finger on, so I can only advise you give it a try if you're curious. Besides the flavour being very interesting, the ice cream itself was fantastically creamy. Their homemade waffle cone was also very good. I also got esquites and horchata while I was there. The esquites cup was pretty good but didn't particularly stand out to me. I would advise mixing it a little before eating so you're not getting spoonfuls of mayo off the top with the first few bites. The horchata was great - smooth flavour with lots of cinnamon. The shop is very nicely decorated. There are a few tables and even a swing inside and outside. It looked clean inside. The people were very nice! I would love to come back even though it's across town! I would be interested in trying out their other desserts but it'll be hard to pass up on that ice cream.

Wow! The Chocolate Moose Moved!…read more Who knew? Not me that's for sure! What can I say is that I was desperate for Ice Cream. And not just 'any' Ice Cream' either. But I wanted the ice cream only 'the moose' has. It was one of those moments after 10 pm at night, and I was without wheels, wondering how I was gonna get a little satisfaction for this craving I seem only to have late at night while having no transportation. Ironic, ( kinda like my nose itching every time I get my hands in dishwater). Perhaps you can relate... maybe not. Anyway I am a 'local' here in Bloomington, which is to say I've lived here almost all my life, ( except for those 'lost years' in Indy.... wherever they went.), Where DID they go? Anyway, I sure can remember the Chocolate Moose, as I'm sure many can, where it once stood in its original location at 401 S Walnut Street, in a tiny little A-frame building, which was actually located in a rather inconvenient spot if you think about it, although I doubt that ever affected it's business negatively. To be honest I had thought the Chocolate Moose just went out of business and closed down. This was just what I gathered when I pulled up with my Granddaughter to get Ice Cream as we had done many times before and the place was just... gone... like it never even existed. Was I in the wrong place? I felt lost, betrayed even. , Why didn't anyone tell me? Am I the only one that didn't know they didn't shut down, but simply relocated? And why did no one find this information newsworthy or important enough to mention? this was a part of our lives, for Chrissakes! My kids and I, trips with their gramma when she was still with us, rest her soul... More than that, it's a pice of history, a place of nostalgia, of good memories... how could this have happened ? Well, my friends, as it turns out, 'The Moose' is very much still in business, yeah, it just relocated to a bigger, trendier, commercial space, one of the new things here in Bloomington, new apartments buildings with retail space below , and they are EVERYWHERE! New buildings that is. It bears mentioning I'm not exactly happy about that, but change happens, and they tell me 'change is good', but I've not found any personal evidence of that as yet, I'm not exactly comfortable with 'change', but whatever. I had to do this thing, so I contacted the 'delivery app' people and placed my order, I had to spend $20 to get it delivered so I made sure it was worth it and started it off with one of my personal favorites, the lemon custard, it's quite 'yellow'! And although yellow is not one of my favorite colors, LEMON is one of my favorite flavors, at least as far as Desserts are concerned. It tasted the same as I remember, and I couldn't help wonder why they didn't just keep the old location and 'expand'? But I'm like that, very curious and always wanting answers to random questions no one else concerns themselves with. This could explain the passion I have for writing, for me it's like a 'feeling validator', works better than Therapy in my opinion, but in my opinion, Ice Cream IS THERAPY! And it saves money and is yummy, what is there not to feel good about? But I didn't stop at the Lemon Custard, I decided to also try their 'Latte'. Save your money for Starbucks overpriced, selection, just as good but... well.. overpriced at $6 for a large. So feeling pretty confident I would probably want more ice cream from the moose before I would be getting sufficient transportation, I also added an ever popular 'Banana Split' to my order, struggling with the options of both 'home made' and 'soft serve' but keep in mind you are limited on the 'soft serve' somewhat. There are three (3) choices; chocolate, vanilla, and 'twist'. I opted for a custom concoction which consisted of strawberry, chocolate, and Grasshopper, ( think mint Oreo). For toppings I chose black raspberry, hot fudge, and marshmallow, I think the whip cream and nuts were extra, jus sayin. Keep in mind they also offer 'vegan' ice cream. I'm not sure what this is but I'm guessing it's for those of us that are lactose intolerant, like me. However, this only affects me sometimes so I admit I totally ignore it. I risk it much more than I should, Good thing on this particular occasion my system found my choices agreeable.
