This is a small local bakery - otherwise known as a hidden gem! I purchased several item for a family activity: Cream horns, little cannolis, apple turnover, and iced cookies. All these sweet confections were scrumptious! Staff were friendly, helpful, and customer service was great. I need to go back. First off the hoosier older female cake decorator can quit talking to people like they are stupid. Just inform customers that you have minimal decorating skill ( tracing premade stencils) and dont want or to lazy to do any simple mods to the stencil. Sitting down and coming up with something to make it work for both parties. Instead of repeating " we dont do that" 100 times. Then i look in the picture catalog and i see pics that would take minimal modification ( mostly colors) to fit my situation. Had my wedding cake from there and ohhhh boy..... they could do i all then when i needed a large high dollar cake. Like just do better Harters, if u are just fishing for easy quick jobs ur on the right track. Just have a sign that says " any thing that requires effort and imagination we dont do" read more

I honestly don't know how anyone can rate Harter's less than 5 stars. When I was a kid, 50 years ago, Harter made the cakes for the roller skate birthday parties at the rink down the road where I worked. They were delicious. As an adult in the area, there is no place I'd even consider for pastries, stollen, bakery cookies, decorated cakes, seasonal delights, you name it. Their service is always great, whether walk in or order ahead. They're open plenty early and stay open I think until 6p most days. The Gooey Butter cake, a St Louis native treat. Is especially noteworthy. Their pastry dough has a delightfully different, unique flavor. The last custom item we ordered from them was a NY Cheesecake topped with Strawberries. My beloved is a great baker in her own right and has a keen palette overall. She said, after one bite, hands down, the best cheesecake I've ever had. I couldn't agree more. We used to love Harter's. Unfortunately, they have gone down hill. Every single time we have gone in there in the past 2 years for a cake they have been unable to do the design. These are not extravagant cakes we are asking for either. Just last week we were told they couldn't do a design, but Schnucks was able to with no problem. No way Schnucks should be able to do more than a bakery! Very disappointing. read more

My family loves Harters so we usually get cake for all our special days, I ordered my sisters birthday cake & cupcakes for her 30th Birthday! Gave them pictures of the theme we wanted and explained how we wanted the vibe of the cake. They did an amazing job capturing the theme and giving us exactly what we envisioned. We got white & chocolate cake with buttercream Icing, it was amazing! I will say I've always thought they are very reasonable priced for their quality of cakes but getting the number cutout was a little pricey, it's hard to complain though cause it turned out so amazing. I called them on a Friday and asked if there was any way at all to get a small (maybe 2 tier) weddings cake for the following Saturday. We absolutely lucked out and they were able to accommodate. We went in for a cake tasting a design meeting the next day. I shared a pic of the cake I really liked, and the color of my skirt. No problem. We ordered and paid for the cake and picked it up the following Saturday. We had a 2 tier, simple, elegant cake. On the larger, bottom layer, we had a strawberry filling done. If I had one critique, it might be to have had a little more filling. The cake was beautiful. It was delicious and it helped to make our small, intimate wedding just what we wanted. read more

Their cakes look very professional, but I cannot speak to their taste. My sister had one from here for her wedding about ten years ago, and I don't recall anything bad. However, this weekend, I was at two family events where cookies were served. One event had my favorite type of cookie, decorated sugar cookies. When I took a bite, I was very surprised by the texture and taste. They were really dry and worst of all, they tasted awful. They had a chemical taste that lingered in my mouth. I was disappointed. At another even, they served gooey butter cookies from here. I was hesitant to try them based on the taste of the sugar cookie. Of course, I just had to taste them. They were also very dry and not "gooey" at all. They weren't even moist. These cookies also had that bad chemical taste. I'm just a home baker who really hasn't met a cookie that I didn't like until I tried these. I can confidently say they were the worst cookies that I've ever had. I just couldn't get over the strange, artificial chemical flavor. All in all, I'd suggest staying away from the cookies. read more

I just found this bakery. The donuts are very good, great cannolis, cream horns and little pineapple upside down cakes. Everything was so good. Great customer service and prices. I think you'd be crazy to buy a cake from anywhere else. My grandmother brought me here all the time as a child and we would get cookies, cupcakes, pastries, you name it! My Mother, however, was a "McArthurs" person. Every big event that came up - birthdays, graduations, confirmations, baby showers, etc, she had to get a cake from there and I was never impressed. Something was always lacking. But when the time came for me to get married, I knew I wanted my cake from Harters. My fiancé and I went in and tasted samples. There wasn't a single one that we didn't like. We looked through books of sample cakes and there were so many, my brain was buzzing! I explained and even doodled a sample of what I wanted my cake to look like. Let me tell you, they brought my silly little doodle to life and it was even more amazing than I had imagined. I chose both a white and yellow cake. Both were moist and delicious. It was a 4 tier cake! I wanted ribbon and flowers incorporated as decoration, which you do have to provide yourself. I provided my cake topper and the ribbon I wanted used. The florist provided the flowers. By the time we were finishing setting up the reception, the cake was delivered and set up. It was absolutely perfect and I cannot tell you how many people complimented the cake and asked where it came from. Shortly after my wedding, friends of mine began messaging me asking again where I got it because they wanted Harters to do their wedding cakes and baby shower cakes too. I've probably referred over 10 people to Harters and will continue to do so! I truly believe that there is no better place. And an additional Thank you to Harters for not only being easy to work with and making my wedding cake the most amazing cake of any kind I've ever had, but also just for being there and being a part of my childhood memories as I grew up. I cannot wait to bring my children into your bakery and let them pick out their favorites just as I did when I was a child. Now that my grandmother is gone, one of my fondest memories is her bringing me here. Its something I'll never forget. And I'll never forget how many amazing experiences I've had with Harters. The cookies and cake at this place are AMAZING. I come in here at least once a month and spend about $60 on goodies. My rating is an average of 2 orders. My wedding cake flavor was amazing, but they did not provide something to hold my cake topper in place like they said they would, and my cake topper fell off and tragically broke as a result. The cupcakes they created for the tasting were great. I ordered 3 flavors: margarita cake with cream cheese filling, pineapple-coconut cake, choosing pineapple filling to match, and a simple red velvet for the less adventurous guests. Interestingly the margarita was green at my tasting but the same color as the pineapple-coconut cake on wedding day, making them hard to differentiate (not cool for the person at my wedding allergic to citrus). I also ordered a four tier to make the overall proportions to be like a photo I brought in. We had fewer than 80 people, so 2 including anniversary tier would have been plenty. They insisted that having 4 tiers in the sizes they recommended would give me what I wanted. Nope. I should have just stuck to 3 tiers. Paid extra to have it turn out further from what I wanted. Six years later, unable to do our usual Melting Pot anniversary meal due to the pandemic, we decided on getting a little anniversary cake for just ourselves. The smallest cake they said they could do feeds 14. I called 3 times with all the same requests and was quoted the highest price when I was ready to place my order (yes, taking tax into consideration every time). The reason I called a few times was their repeated insistence they have never done a pineapple-flavored cake and that it's physically impossible to do. But that's what I wrote down as one of their flavors available in our original phone call prior to the tasting, it's one of the flavors I told them I wanted to try at the tasting, it's one of the flavors they said to me when listing what each flavor was at my tasting, and it's one of the flavors I put on my menu (I still have all of this physical writing/printed documentation). They said they could check their records, but nothing is by computer, so they couldn't find it (and decided not to call me back like they said they would). They insisted it must have been a coconut cake with pineapple filling, when I specifically chose the pineapple filling to go with the pineapple portion of the cake flavor, so I disagree. I went ahead and got the coconut cake with pineapple filling, hoping for the best, and it was definitely not what we had at our wedding. The flavor was, of course, different, it was not nearly as moist, and the filling was lacking in quantity. Quality has gone down. It was a $38.50 disappointment. They did do icing flowers on top at no extra charge, but then they put balloon streamers on there like it was a 5 year old's birthday cake. And they put the streamers underneath the flowers, so they couldn't be removed for photos or eating without destroying the flowers. The flavors and moistness of our wedding cake were so good, we'd have recommended to anyone, but now, quite the opposite. And to top it off, they don't require masks during the pandemic. I turned around to leave, to find an un-masked man inches away from me in my personal bubble space (too close even sans pandemic). I don't think the woman assisting me and opening the box and breathing on my cake wore one either, but I can't remember 100%. read more

We wanted a cake that had a water theme for a pool party. They did a sea or ocean/beach theme cake, working with the drawings I had done and I added my own Sesame Street toppers. They also used some beach ball suckers That I provided to put around the center. They had sugar fish and sea shells which were really cute. The cake turned out very cute and tasted great. They don't do fondant, so I found it a little more challenging to get the look I wanted, but they did a great job and the buttercream was tasty. Great tasting cake. And great service. read more
