Unfortunately the food was terribly disappointing. We ordered a basic cheeseburger with a side of chili. It was just fair. We also ordered the salmon with a side salad. I won't nitpick the basic little side salad, but the salmon was practically inedible. It was extremely over cooked with huge, deep grill marks. Had an early dinner Saturday evening. Place was fairly busy at 4:30. We ate at the bar, and the server was very attentive. I had their French Onion soup, my wife had a dinner salad with the house dressing. Both were excellent. We split the prime rib dinner special, a 20 ounce cut, definitely enough for the two of us. I requested medium rare, which it was, even after they grilled it prior to serving. I wasn't a fan of that because the tail portion of the prime, my favorite part, was totally burnt. I am not sure if they would serve it without charring it first. For dessert, we took home a slice of carrot cake, very moist. As to the liquor service, I was not a fan of the measured shots, would have preferred a hand pour, considering the price and amount of alcohol received. And, of course, the food was delightful, steaks prepared perfectly to each individual's liking. Unlike trends today, the price of the steaks included a house salad and your choice of a side dish. Given the rapid rise in costs these days, this was a welcome change. While I didn't try one of their tasty looking desserts, my friends did and were very pleased. After traveling all week, I was looking forward to a sit-down meal and was craving steak. My brother lives near by and suggested Harry J's. The food was not to die for, but was very tasty. The menu had a lot to offer and they had fresh coffee in the evening. The service was good and our server remembered to check my coffee cup half way through the meal. The piece of meat you get is enormous. It's made to order. The Old Fashioned I ordered was mediocre. I did not have room for dessert and I took home at least half of my prime rib. The dress is whatever you like as long as you wear a shirt and shoes. The waitress was friendly, fast, and accommodating. I did not notice if there was a sharing fee. Don't get me wrong, I love cheese, but this was shredded cheddar overload. When our entrees arrived, I was confused. We both ordered our steaks medium rare, and they looked charred. I did the poke test to check for doneness, and it felt more like a medium. I cut into the steak, although it was a generous portion, it was mostly fat and gristle. It was cooked to a medium as expected, not a deal breaker. I took one bite and was overwhelmed by salt. I have never seen a prime rib served this way. It was completely charred on both sides like a normal steak. If it had been presented as a ribeye, I wouldn't have second guessed it. But, a prime rib, it was not. I was very disappointed in not only the flavor but also the preparation. Overall, the service was wonderful, but if you are going to advertise a prime rib special, you should explain that the prime rib is prepared unlike any other prime rib. read more

Housed in and old feed co-op building this restaurant is filled with plenty of nostalgia and charm however if your looking for frills and nonsense this isn't the place for you. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive making it a great choice for dining. I chose the stuffed filet of sole with baked potato and salad. The sole was absolutely delicious and stuffed with plenty of crabmeat and a sauce making it a wonderful selection. Husband had the filet and said it was fantastic , cooked perfectly and delicious flavor. We are not new to the area and we have eaten at Harry J's Steakhouse in the past. It seems like it must be an economy thing because the quality of food for the price has really diminished. Considering this is supposed to be a Steakhouse and not a diner. My wife, who is a retired chef from Sysco Foods, and I ate there last night and spent over $80 for two steaks that looked like a diner steak. They were really thin, about a quarter inch thick! You can go to Logan's Texas Roadhouse or Colton and get a much thicker cut steak. Now I realize it goes by weight, but I would rather have a thick cut steak, 1/2 inch or thicker with a small surface area than a larger flat steak that looks like it belong in a Denny''s or Waffle House. The baked potato was not oven baked, it was microwaved, and you can taste it. Fries were a little bit greasy and cold. As far as the ambience, it could do better by segregating the smokers at the bar from the people dining in the restaurant. I have no problem if people choose to smoke, but it should not be where people do not smoke, have to breathe their secondhand while paying good money for a meal.. The service was good, although we did feel like we were being rushed as the bus boy kept coming by and expeditiously kept removing dishes as if to try to get us in and out. Probably will not go back because for the money, there are much better steak houses that have a better choice of steaks and much more appealing cuts. read more
