History
1849 - 1 room Harrods, with 2 assistants and 1 messenger boy for groceries at the current location, is founded by Charles Henry Harrod (1799-1885), a draper turned grocer, in anticipation for the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park
1860 - CHH sells Harrods to son Charles Digby Harrod (1841-1905) who then builds up the business into a department store for the wealthy and acquires adjacent properties.
1868 -16 employees
1881 - 100 employees
1883- fire burns down Harrods Dec 3 but was able to still fulfill Xmas deliveries. Rebuilds a bigger store.
1889 -CDH retires & Harrods shares are floated on London Stock Exchange which then are sold to Edgar Cohen (for today's price of 14M pounds)
1894-1905 current 5acre building is built with the design by architect Charles William Stephens
1898 -1st moving staircase (escalator) in England is installed in Harrods and brandy was offered to those nervous getting off
1959 - House of Fraser Co (a British department store group) buys Harrods
1985 - The Fayed brothers buys House of Fraser
1989 - dress code for customers is established and still is enforced
1994 - House of Fraser goes public but Fayed keeps Harrods
1998 - a photograph memorial for Fayed's son filmmaker Dodi Fayed & Princess Diana (who both died year earlier) is erected at the bottom of the Egyptian escalator
2005 - bronze statue memorial "Innocent Victims" for Dodi & Diana is erected by the escalator at door 3
2010 - sold to state of Qatar (a tiny country in the Middle East that borders east side of Saudi Arabia) for 1.5B pounds
