I went to Harrods for the sole reason of it being Harrods. It's really not my kind of place--there are floors of luxury goods that I didn't even care to look at because I knew they would be more than I would be willing to spend. There was a whole section of toys, which is pretty cool for kids (but useless for me). We went to some of the floors with regular people items (read: clothes and accessories than don't cost hundreds or thousands of pounds), but I could tell that they had marked up a lot of the prices. Overall, I was just so not impressed with Harrods--but I can acknowledge that it is a pretty incredible place that features TONS of clothing, toys, home decor, accessories, and FOOD (probably the best part). read more

If you have been saving your change and finally have enough to score an LV wallet do get it in Europe because you end up saving 10-20 percent off US prices due to a lower cost of the goods as well as the tax refund. The Harrods motto is Omnia Omnibus Ubique, which is Latin for "all things for all people, everywhere." After walking in here, you see they try to live up to this motto. However, you better have some serious cash stacked to shop here. It's a shopping experience like you wouldn't believe. I spent 2 days here and more money than I should have. They have every luxury brand you can imagine. Men, women, kids, home, cafés, restaurants, books, toys, handbags, accessories, fine jewelry, etc. They have several floors, organized by which items sold on that particular floor. My favorites were Shoe Heaven and Fine Jewelry. There are map booklets throughout, as well as very helpful salespeople that are happy and willing to direct you, especially if you're lost. Once you go through the floors, you'll see it's very easy to lose your way. I have to say you won't notice many locals shopping here; it looks like a tourist's playground, especially from the Middle East. We fit in, I guess. I would definitely recommend a visit as this isn't your typical department store at all. It's something you should expect to spend a couple hours doing while in London. I'm not sure how many people know this, but there is a memorial for Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed located at the base of the Egyptian Escalator. Mohamed Al-Fayed was the previous chairman of Harrods; Dodi Fayad was his son. Al-Fayad commissioned two memorials for them after their deaths. The first one has photographs of the pair behind a pyramid-shaped display. It holds a wine glass smudged with lipstick from Diana's last dinner and an engagement ring Dodi purchased for Diana the day before their tragic accident. The ring is unique and beautiful to see. The second memorial is a bronze statue of the couple dancing on a beach beneath the wings of an albatross, a bird said to symbolize the Holy Spirit. This statue is called "Innocent Victims" and gives a hint of the weird vibe you get here. It's definitely sad and somber, but creepy and uncomfortable as well. There's a guestbook to sign in front of them on a podium for people who want to leave their mark. It has a lot of random signatures and "I was here" inscriptions. This is a must-see when you visit Harrods, too! read more

Food Halls are laden with exquisite foods from around the globe and are very tempting to consder buying. the Electronics department is a great attraction for men of all ages as the humungous TV screens and magnificent HD are breathtaking. apart from these two areas there isnt really much for guys but the ladies will love the perfume and accesorise areas. read more

But it's not a store so much as a playground for international shoppers. So we like it. In the same way that you, an American, would chuckle a little bit, if someone from the UK was all excited about going to Macy's, the locals don't care for it much. There is at least one thing that's reasonably priced: WINE. Their wine cellar has many selections, including a few "house wines" of their own label. For around 8-10 GBP, we were pretty happy with what we got! Clothes and everything else are hopelessly overpriced, but whatever. Peter and I went to Harrods. It is a very expensive department store...,like very expensive. I had a 20 pound budget but that doesn't go far. Even though we skipped most of the departments we still spent 4 hours in the store. We spent the most time in the Toy Department and high end chocolate department. I bought some UK exclusive Mr. Men books, some adult colouring books, fine chocolates and some Mr. Bean stuffies. The food court is very high end. 5 star or higher to go stuff at a smaller scale. I didn't have dinner but everything looked really gourmet. I found the people very helpful, especially, in the Toy Department. The staff weren't snooty or judgemental as I thought. It was more the ultra rich people that were more self entitled, some of which were really rude to staff cause I guess when you're a millionaire you're entitled to treat retail staff like crap (note sarcasm). Never, ever again. I have been shopping at Harrods for years. Not thousand pound dress shopping, but shopping none the less. The way i was ignored on this last visit has put me off ever going back. You had to be in a burka to receive any attention or help at all. If you weren't, forget it-they didnt want to help you at all. I was ignored both in handbags, and in the designer dress section. One salesgirl upstairs actually went over and started talking to another about me! They then both looked at me and walked away. Instead we went to Selfridges. Behind these walls are the most well known famous designers whose life is dedicated to their craft and their creative flair. Great selections of merchandise, designers galore, latest trends, if you are a shopper, this is Mecca. Literally. And the crowds! a bit of everything but mainly La creme de la creme. And you can see it all around in the neighborhood where Harrod's is located.Lots of high end clothing and luxury items. The sheer size of the store blew my mind. From food to clothing, you can find it all. Only annoying thing is there were too many families with too many strollers. It was also a bit hectic due to the crowds and i don't really enjoy crowds. The salesgirl's radar picked up on my duck face and ran over to help me. There's something to be said about high-quality clothing. I can rock a t-shirt and shorts with the best of them. Living in Miami, I do so on a regular basis. But, if my reviews have taught you anything, I am - by nature - a fancypants kinda guy. I like nice things and when I'm in the mood, I can't (won't) deny myself. Salesgirls pick up on this and when the stars are aligned, I can do a lot of damage. Oh well. YOLO, as the drug-addled kids say. But, I think there's something about Harrods that makes you want to buy. Is it the music? Are they pumping shopping pheromones throughout the store? I dunno. Once you've reconciled with the fact that you'll basically be emptying the contents of your 401k to make a purchase here, it's all fun and games. From the comprehensive portfolio of luxury wares brought to you by the world's preeminent designers, to the disgustingly indulgent handbag selection, to furniture that costs more than some houses, to the gorgeous restaurants, to the medley of music that primes people for dropping loads of cash: It's a scene, all right. I believe the sales associates are born with pretentiousness in their blood. Yes - an especially rich blood type known as Type P positive. If you think about it, they're unfazed by even 'large' purchases considering some shoppers spend an entire year's salary in just a few hours. They're nice enough, but don't expect that the red carpet will be rolled out along with a glass of bubbly just because you're dropping £1500 on a Tom Ford handbag. You'll have to visit Neiman Marcus for that treatment! And if you've succumbed to making a largish purchase and live outside the UK, don't forget to visit Harrod's tax desk to fill out your VAT (value-added tax) paperwork. You'll need your passport and receipt, and once you get to the airport, you'll also need to visit Customs to get your refund paperwork stamped. It's totally worth it - as in, 20% back worth it - just make sure to allow for extra time at the airport! As for Harrods - they do a really nice job of getting you in and out at the tax desk. The ice cream is out of this world and the ambiance of the parlor reminds me of 1950's America. I have to say the staff at the ice cream parlor is the most attentive I have ever had in Europe. Just be aware that the layout of the store is organized (or disorganized) in a way so that you will find yourself endlessly meandering its showrooms...similar to the strategy employed by Las Vegas casinos. I came for the tourist aspect more so than for shopping. Without a doubt it is an exquisite store with breathtaking art and departments. I found the Harrod's house brand of handbags, coin purses and wallets of special interest. I purchased a barrel bag that I adore and have used faithfully for a year now. It's still in excellent shape despite the constant abuse and over stuffing I put it through. I would definitely purchase another without hesitation, as they are affordable. The ladies washroom is impressive, albeit crowded. I also enjoyed the food hall with its sprawling varieties. The memorial statue of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed was of special interest to me as well. When I think of memorials, I think sacred and honored. Unfortunately others saw it as an attraction, hovering around taking selfies and posing for pictures with the statue and whatnot; I found it disrespectful. Lives were lost, and I wish people would approach this loss with respect. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Wow, shock horror! Can't believe I haven't written a review about the phenomenon that is Harrods. Why I like it: It's sells lots of stuff and stuff generally makes me happy. Please note that i can not afford anything in there, okay perhaps a little dramatic, I can afford the loo paper in the posh loos! Why I don't like it: like flies to poop and bees to flowers, this is a huge honey trap. The rich and poor alike clog up Brompton Road snapping photos and waiting for their pals. Why "outside Harrods" is a good meeting place I will never understand. To begin with it's huge. There are about a million and one places that one could use at a meeting point: "meet me outside the main door." Yep, coz that's gonna work. GET OUT OF MY WAY!!! I'm trying to get somewhere! The accountant's son says: IF you're going to be spending bank at Harrods make sure to get the VAT back (its like tax-free) which is located on the ground floor of the massive department store, just show them the receipts. You can actually save a lot just remember to get the money back at the airport before returning home. Your review on Harrods completely depends on how much of a tourist you are. Of course, if you like Pizza you will find Harrods Pizzeria to be absurdly expensive yet outstanding to your taste buds. If you prefer pocket to mouth I suggest peering at the extravagant window exhibitions all around Harrods but to stay away from it's Snake in the Garden of Eden appeal. If you are with children OBVI go to the childrens floor, where books and toys are a plenty however if you are an impulse spender stay away from the jewelery and perfume regions. this place is basically a mini-town so if you are really intrigued you could spend all day here. It can become almost ludicrous in its grandiose, especially when you get to the sports section on a higher floor. I fell in love the moment I entered here! The decor was breath taking. After hearing so much about Harrods, I had to stop in here when I went to London. The store was beautifully decorated and the ambiance was regal. The beautiful art and rich vibrant colors were almost overwhelming. I enjoyed walking through the store and viewing the vast selection of clothes, jewelry, luggage and wares. Harrods is indeed a force to be reckoned with. I must admit while I was looking to buy myself a dress, there is no way I was going to pay the exorbitant prices. I stopped in knowing it was pricey but it was indeed worth the experiencing of window shopping. I am one that hates to window shop, but in this instance, it was warranted. This is a place that you MUST visit if in London. The art and statues alone are breath taking. To top it off, we had tea in the Georgian room and that was delightful. Warning: I'm gonna bash on Harrods a little bit; those of you sensitive to this issue may want to stop reading now. Okay. So, Harrods. I understand it's a cornerstone of high-end London shopping, and that's why all the tourists flock there by the bucket loads EVERY DAY to have their photo taken out front and wander aimlessly about not actually buying anything. But it looks like a mausoleum; it's hard to navigate (because of said tourists, and because it's not well laid out); and every time I go there I become simultaneously homicidal and pyromaniacal. I seriously get this urge to go running through the store screaming, "I'm gonna burn this mother down!" I assume that's like yelling 'fire' in a cinema and totally illegal, so it remains a fantasy. But seriously, it's really difficult not to start throwing elbows randomly into the masses. I've only been twice in three years. I may never go again. read more

From a merchandise perspective, I can see why Harrod's gets high marks--they do have quite a selection, and for the standard tourist, what is more baller than walking around with a green and gold bag that screams "I just paid way too much money for this prize"?? But, it is easily the most frustrating place to shop, not only in the UK, but definitively the world. I kid you not. I pride myself on my ability to navigate myself around a massive department store (and since I have zero sense of direction in the "real world", I've gotta shake what my mama gave me, if you will)--and Harrods, with its overly cluttered departments and lack of clear signage made me search for 15 minutes to find the way out. Each "exit sign" was a fallacy, leaving me confused, overheated, and frustrated. Yes, the food halls are a gem, and during their annual sale, you can get some nice things, but overall, I like Selfridges much better, for both its layout and for not robbing me of my sanity. As to be expected, sales associates range from lovely to snobby. If you enjoy foraging through heaps of goods, sure, why not head there. Certainly the ability to get the VAT back on location is an advantage, but the amount of over-priced items makes it not always cost-effective to go to Harrods - I guess it depends of what you need to purchase, and whether you want to have the 'Harrods experience' (i.e. get lost in a huge department store that looks like a small city where lots of very helpful staff offer you help to navigate through an infinite smorgasboard of items to purchase). For a non-shopper this place can be overwhelming to say the least. I have never seen anything like it. You could probably take a whole day to see the store. It was kinda weird seeing people buying all this stuff. Isn't this kind of excess one of the reasons why the world is in some kind of economic meltdown? For example, I saw at least 5 giant chocolate Easter eggs for sale. These were like 5 feet tall and cost 600 POUNDS! Whoa, $1000 for a giant chocolate Easter egg? No shit? But as long as you can distance yourself from that it can be fun to look around. I mean, it's not your money, right? Seems like the only thing most people can afford to buy is souvenirs from the gift shop. No thanks, I do not need an ink pen that reads Harrod's. The food court and grocery looked interesting. Oh man, this place. There's nothing like it in America and it's an absolute go-to as a tourist. If you want to visit and do some shopping without crowds, go during the week and during the day time. Also, if you want to find some cute gifts for yourself (or friends) hit the gift shop and they have a lot of reasonably-priced items. An absolute see is the food shops on the ground level. They have a counter for just about anything you can imagine. I picked up a red velvet cupcake and it was like a traditional American red velvet cupcake with an English twist. I totally loved it. Harrods is a quintessential shop for foodies and shopaholics. It's quite touristy and full of clothes/handbags I absolutely cannot afford. They give great attention to detail and the entire place is like an ornate maze of the most beautiful items money can buy. Since I cannot afford the clothes, I say you can take or leave those. But the most amazing not to miss areas of Harrods are the food emporium and the toy store. The food section is amazing and filled with teas, chocolates, candies, biscuits. I left with a box of truffles and a tin of orange chocolate biscuits, one of which I am eating now over a cup of my afternoon tea. It's beautiful and for a foodie, Harrods is heaven with too much gold filigree. But the other part of Harrods one shouldn't miss: the toy store. When I was 5 years old, I had a Scottish nanny who taught me how to take my tea, how to play gin and how to knit. She went home to visit her family and made a week stay in London as well and brought me back one of the Harrods annual bears as a gift. I bought the 2009 annual bear for myself this vacation as a reversion back to childhood. Stepping into the toy section was like stepping in the Velveteen Rabbit. There were so many stuffed animals and there was one moment when I sat in the middle of a circle of me-sized teddy bears and plush rocking horses. I felt like I was 5 years old all over again, except now it seems slightly less acceptable to touch all the stuffed animals to see which one is softer. All in all, you can take or leave Harrods. But if you go, check out the food and the toys. It's 100% worth it. read more

I heard this place was soo famous that I made some time before my flight out of london just to take a looksy and was not disappointed. 1) food court.... you can get lost here... by staring at the food they have to offer. I guess this place does seem to demonstrate name brand stores where all the workers represent themselves by wearing such name brand stuff, knowing all about their name brandness, and just enjoy the atmosphere in bliss 3) Customer service. : top notch won't say much more 4) Egyptian themed hall ways and escalators. Probably one of the most impressive department stores I've ever seen. They've got huge selections, unmatched by any other place. They've got the best brand names in about every category. The displays that they put together for Christmas are simply amazing. However, it's also a huge tourist trap, so you'll be fighting awful crowds everywhere you turn, and the prices will make you require a second mortgage. Seriously, I know they are selling movie-star-approved expensive name brands, but the prices seem marked up higher than they are elsewhere; AND THEN I remember that the price is in pounds and not dollars, so tack on another 50% (based on current exchange rates)!! read more
