I was highly deceived and flabbergasted when I bought a snow crab leg platter to find out it was imitation crab!! It's quite easy to know what imitation crab looks like, but they quite literally made it look like real crab. Then had the nerve to garnish it with romaine lettuce. Harris Teeter is somewhere between Whole Foods and Safeway. It's basically a 4 star grocery store. However, I have to deduct 1 star for this location due to the parking nightmare and not being able to take your cart to your car (which is weird and difficult when shopping alone). The best thing about Harris Teeter is that it's nicer than your typical grocery store. It's cleaner and prettier, and, generally, the selection is better. And the prices are lower than those higher-end grocery stores. This particular Teeter is easy to navigate, well-stocked, etc. The big downside to this particular Teeter, though, is the parking situation. There is a serious lack of parking. At almost any time of any day, you will have to circle the parking lot several times before snagging a space. And then there's the fact that you literally can't take the shopping carts more than a few feet from in front of the store. There are barricades all along the front of the store to restrict their carts from going anywhere. Now while I can certainly understand some of the possible reasons for this, it definitely presents a challenge (and huge irritation) when shopping solo. read more

The produce and meat is never fresh and over priced (everything is overpriced). I would never recommend shopping for fruit/vegetables/fish/meat here. The bakery section only carries stale bread/baked goods. There is never enough employees to get people through checkout. Expect to wait a really long time and have your groceries poorly bagged. I have never seen a grocery store where ALL employees make you feel like you are bothering them when you talk to them.... from the cashier to the manager.... I had experienced repeated deception in this place.. The cashier Felishia (just now) looked at me as if I was turd for not knowing how many bags I needed...on top of that made a comment to her co worker as making fun of me and tried to get a customer to side with her.... Can't really give less then a 4 star on this Harris Teeter. Its really clean and has friendly staff. However, I give it a negative star because of PARKING. It SUCKS to park in the parking lot. Its a nightmare when you go during busy times because the parking lot is small and it is shared by other surrounding businesses. I people always fight for parking spots and theres always a traffic jams trying to find parking. However, the good part is that you can park in the parking garage you can park at and get your ticket validated. If they didn't have that option i would have given this place a one star. Make sure you validate your ticket at customer service...there is this ticket machine you just stick your ticket in. Another thing that makes this place less then a five star is that you can't take your shopping carts five feet from the door. They don't have anywhere to put your shopping carts in the parking lot so you either have someone drive your car up to the front or bring the shopping cart back or just leave the shopping cart in the parking lot...which isn't good if your car gets hit by one of them. read more

This Harris Teeter keeps getting worse, some of the female employees behind the counter act like you are bothering them. They move really slow like they want you to go away and they are doing you a favor. The bread is often hard and they don't remove their sale signs after the sale is over. And new sale signs aren't always posted.There are never any shopping baskets at the front of the store; you have to hunt for them. They stopped providing wipes for your carts. As high as the prices are there you would think the store would be cleaner. read more

Open 24 freaking hours. YES! I stayed in a hotel nearby and had a craving for ruffled potato chips dipped in Top-the-Tater (sour cream & onion dip) after 10pm. Nothing was open in the vicinity, I was getting desperate but then saw that Harris Teeter had awesome hours for those of us who are night walkers. Store was kind of tucked away next to a shopping center. The place was clean and well-stocked, prices were just slightly higher than what I was used to but I figured it was due to the cost of living in the area. No Top-the-Tater, but that's a Minnesota thing (and the best sour cream & onion dip ever). I found a substitute, grabbed my Lays ruffled chips, a gallon of water, and went on my merry way. Staff were easy to find. Other humans shopping were polite too. I used the self-check out without any issues--it did ask if I wanted to sign up for their store discount card but I declined as my visit was very short-term. This location was out of carts and baskets at the front, and when I asked an employee where I can find the baskets, I was told "that's not my problem, take it up with customer service!" This was my first time shopping at this grocery store and is the closest one to my new apartment, needless to say, I won't be returning. I checked out of the store with the groceries I could hold in my arms due to not getting a cart. Also, having to pay to park at a grocery store doesn't seem right at all in my opinion, but that's the city, not the store's fault. read more

Parking is a nightmare. Thankfully, I live within walking distance but during the weekend, it's nearly impossible to find a spot. There are garages but I believe you have to pay for it. However, if you do find a spot out front, it's free for the first hour, just make sure you press the button on the meter! This store usually has everything I'm looking and is pretty well stocked. The major pro is that it's 24/7 so I've visited all times of the day! However, don't go at night and get produce. The one time I got strawberries and I didn't realize until I got home that there was mold on them. Definitely get a VIC card as there's always deals on most items! I'd recommend stopping by for your kitchen staples but be prepared to drive around a bit to look for a parking spot. It's near a bunch of other shops like TJ Maxx, Bed Bath, Ulta, Rite Aid and a bunch of restaurants so if you're running multiple errands, it's all in one spot! read more

Good God Almighty this store is clean! Maybe I'm just used to my 'hood Giant (where, even though it's open 24 hrs, I do NOT go after nightfall; I don't need anything that bad), where the floor has that dingy film and 90s R&B lilts in the air. But this Harris Teeter was so refreshing, so brightly lit. And as much as I adored Tevin Campbell in third grade, it's nice to have chill [but not smooth] jazz playing while I shop. The aisles are as wide as the shelves are well-stocked. Sure, it's a little pricey, but I wouldn't mind shelling it out since the store is so clean and the staff was friendly (the woman at the register even told me to have a nice day; you don't get pleasantries like that at my Giant). The food seems a bit fresher, too. I acquired two beautifully red NY strip steaks for $7; quality I wouldn't have gotten at my home-store at a reasonable price. Harris Teeter is also near and dear to my heart on a personal level, since it was founded in my sorta hometown of Kannapolis, NC, home of the late NASCAR great Dale Earnhardt. When my parents were in town, they offered to take me grocery shopping (YESSS!!!..free food!). My roommate wanted to go to Costco and offered to let us tag along and use her card. However, all of us did not realize that this particular location is closed on Labor Day. Boo. And so we ended up at Harris Teeter. This was my first time visiting the "Teet". And I have to say, though some things here were definitely more expensive than items I'd buy at my neighborhood Giant, I found some good deals on produce items like raspberries. I mean, granted, my parents were the ones paying for everything, but I still don't like to make them unnecessarily spend their money. The store seemed pretty clean and organized and everyone was really friendly. I'd probably go to a Harris Teeter again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come to this location. This is the most overrated store I have ever been to in my life. I have no idea why this place is so popular. The organic produce selection is garbage---I am consistently angered and insulted to see the rotten, bruised, and shriveled produce displayed in the organic section. Why bother? Who wants to buy rotten fruit? I can't figure out why this place is so expensive. There is absolutely no reason I should be paying so much for mass produced, conventionally grown produce. It makes much more sense to shop at Giant...but maybe Giant doesn't have the attractive yet artificial "fancy" facade of Harris Teeter? I am so sick of hearing about how Harris Teeter is "high quality"...it's not. MOM's is high quality; Whole Foods is high quality; this place is just high prices. The butcher section is worthless. These guys really screwed me over this past weekend. I raised a bunch of money at my school to buy turkeys to donate to DC Central Kitchen so that they can start preparing their Thanksgiving meals. I called around to grocery stores to figure out where I could get the best deal on turkeys so that I could buy as many as possible for DCCK. I called this Harris Teeter and explained why I was buying the turkeys, etc. I spoke with a manager who verified the sale price and confirmed that there was no limit to how many I could buy. I told her how much money I had raised, and she claimed they would have plenty in stock the day that I was coming. I showed up on the day that I had told the manager I would be there. After loading all the turkeys that they had into carts, we only had about $175 worth of turkeys, and we had almost $600 to spend. When I asked the man at the meat counter if there were any more turkeys in the back, he FREAKED out and yelled at me for taking all of them. He said that they were not allowed to sell turkeys for non-profits because they are selling the turkeys at a loss. So basically, the guy was a total dick, and I ended up having to make 2 more stops to find enough turkeys, and I ended up having to spend more on them, so I ended up with fewer turkeys. I planned ahead for a reason, but they totally screwed me over. I was really disappointed by this place. I won't be back. In addition, the few times that I have bought produce here, it was total crap. Nothing I have bought here has lasted more than a few days. And everything in the store is really overpriced. read more

Word of advice for those trying to find parking: Go to the parking garage with the entrance on Army Navy Drive. There is ALWAYS (either a busy Sunday afternoon or holiday!) parking in this garage. Parking is free for the first 90 minutes with validation. I used to think Giant was cheaper but after stopping in here with the ex to buy some Valentine's day goodies (don't ask), I decided to pick up a few of my weekly groceries. I was surprised to learn that the prices here were cheaper than Giant! The canned fruit was about .50 cheaper and the produce was not only fresher, but cheaper as well. The store is huge and offers a lot a variety of all the foods you're looking for. I've even sampled some of their pre-made deli items and they didn't disappoint. My only complaint is they often run out of produce and their isn't much of a "home" isle. Ya know, baking dishes, cat food, scented candles, etc. For those items, you'll have to head next door to Bed Bath & Beyond. The "international" isle is also lacking compared to Giant. I begrudgingly shop at this location. I will start by saying that the staff has always been friendly and I have no complaints with them. But here are my complaints... the aisles are incredibly narrow which makes it difficult for more than one person to get through at times. Completely sub par produce that HT has no problem charging a premium for (is NoVA in a third world country??). Parking is a nightmare in the lot, so just park in the garage below and have your ticket validated (free for one hour) at the customer service center before leaving. Here is my chief, and consistent, complaint - the shoppers themselves. If you happen to be a shopper at this store, please remember you are not the only person in the store. The aisles are tight, it's hectic after work, but please have a bit of courtesy. Say 'excuse me' or 'I'm sorry' when trying to get through the aisle. I will move for politeness. Although I live within walking distance, I will go out of my way to other stores (or shop at very off hours) if possible. Generally a poor experience all around. read more

I generally only come into the store for aisle and frozen goods. On this trip, I got coffee and ice cream. Ben and Jerry's was on sale :) I steer clear of the produce and meat departments. Items are hardly ever fresh, but for everything else, I don't mind stopping by. The sales are decent and prices on par with other competitors. read more

This Harris Teeter is my local grocery store and I used to shop here a bunch. I've been frequenting other grocery stores/ markets more recently due to some of the cashiers' bad attitudes. It's sad to expect great service after witnessing the customer in front of me leave with a huge smile, but then not receive the same treatment. Not sure what I did to some of the women here. The men in seafood and produce, as well as the women at customer service and the assistant manager are always kind. Unfortunately for me, a few bad apples does spoil the bunch. I am not one for writing reviews but I felt this should be addressed. Let me preface this by staying that I work night shift from 7:00pm to 7:00am and I tend to stop by this store on my way home in the mornings. Last week I stopped to pick up a few things and needed to make a pit stop while I was shopping. I started walking to the men's room and out of the corner of my eye I see someone, wearing a Harris Teeter badge, following me to the restroom. I sat my basket on top of the water fountain and turned left to go into the men's room. As I am opening the door, I look to my left, and the person following me immediately looks down and pretends to be adjusting a flower arrangement. Keep in mind I am wearing blue hospital scrubs and a name badge so needless to say it would not be in my best interest to attempt to steal something from Harris Teeter. When confronted, the employee denied she was following me and stated she was simply tidying up the store. Let me make this perfectly clear Harris Teeter, there is NOTHING in you store that I have a desire to steal. I will take this one step further and say that if there was a another grocery store in the area I would boycott Harris Teeter all together. I echo the comments made about the rude staff, especially at the hour of the morning. It's very simple people, if you don't like your job try finding another one. I love the Harris Teeter in Pentagon City. The store does a great job of providing hospitable and helpful employees. They have a great selection of food and will special order a product if they do not carry it. Once in awhile they have to order us some Black Jewel Popcorn. Yummy. The by the pound salad bar is pretty decent. They validate parking in the garage underneath the building. If you are there at a off-peak time and get parking out front the meters have a button to push for an hour free. read more

On the one hand, I commend the chain for putting a store in an under-served area. Without Harris Teeter, there would be no grocery stores near the Pentagon. However, they make it darn difficult to shop there. All of the above-ground spots are metered and I can pretty much promise they will be full when you get there. There's a below-ground parking garage, but you have to pay to park there too. It is such a pain to pay to park on top of paying to shop. I did not see any kind of stamper or reimbursement system in place. Otherwise, it is a standard Harris Teeter. They have a decent selection of cheeses and of beer and their prices are comparable to other groceries in the area. Yeah, I know you hate that UScan machine. I've successfully scanned 22 items, bagged them and paid faster than most people with 5 items. I even had produce! All you need to know to make your UScan experience easier is that the bagging area is really a scale. Each item's weight is logged-in, if that weight doesn't hit the scale, UScan thinks you're trying to be scandalous! Anyway, Vanessa is the regular nighttime cashier here. She's great and almost every regular nighttime shopper knows her by name and always has a smile when they see her. Even if I wanted to leave quickly, I couldn't. I always have to have a few words with Vanessa. In conclusion, she's an excellent cashier--funny too! The store is very clean and employees are all quite nice, except for the customer service desk people in the day time--they just cannot be bothered today--or tomorrow. Produce is average, and well-stocked. This store, like most HTs carry a small selection of specialty produce (Buddha's hands, baby pineapple, starfruit, aloe and so on) and frequently have specials. Parking is ridiculous in the daytime! Avoid the lot and go directly to the garage! Parking is validated. Also--Harris Teeter brand Florida orange juice (Valencia and Grove's Best), which are not from concentrate, are up there in quality and almost as good, if not better than some of the juices at Whole Foods! Add the fact that a large jug is 2.19 (sometimes 2.89) then you got yourself a winner! read more

I'm not really in love with this place. I'm more, "in like" with it. Its a bit of a step up from Giants in terms of quality, though certainly a step down in terms of selection. I guess if I had to boil HT down to a single sentence it would be "the bastard love child of Giant and Whole Foods." It excels in neither price nor quality unlike it's parents, but is more well rounded than either of them. Mainly because I have a friend who lives in the apartments above, so when I visit him, I can do a little bit of grocery shopping and then dump my crap in his apartment and not have to worry if I'm going to be able to carry it all home because I get a ride home from him anyway. Ha. But seriously, this Harris Teeter is mad pimpin'. Every time I've been in here, the place does not look like a tornado hit a zoo built atop a landfill like some other grocery stores in the area. I always find what I need, and I have never run into anything that was out of stock. If there is difficulty in finding an item, the employees are helpful and don't act as though I'm interrupting their laziness. A+. read more

This is a terribly frustrating store, and it is not friendly to shoppers. The staff there was perfectly kind, but the setup of the store and its contents were not designed to help out. The produce seemed to be fully stocked, except for the bananas, which were clearly almost out by the time I got there. What was left, however, was completely unacceptable. I realize I am used to the agricultural wonderland of Ohio, but I really expected much better from this place, which reminded me over and over again that it was upscale, for discerning customers who deserve a high-end, VIP, exclusive experience. The peaches were bruised, dry and cracked. The cucumbers were tiny, and laughably priced. The bell peppers were $3 EACH. The onions, while apparently a fair deal, came only in softball size, forcing me to pay for twice as much onion as I needed. Not everything is frighteningly more expensive than my normal Kroger experience - some of it is just a 10 to 50 cents more than I would normally pay. But the store brand offerings are meager, and sometimes not much of a deal. Plenty of attention and shelf space is spent on high-end, VIP, exclusive, organic, premium, imported, gold-leafed, bourgeois groceries the residents of Northern Virginia so clearly deserve. Not so much with affordable basics. Perhaps the unfriendliest aspect is presented to the denigrated customer in the parking lot. The parking spots are metered (with one free hour), and perhaps most aggravating, there are metal guards around the store entrance, with only one opening, making it very difficult to get your cart out of the store and to your car. And there's no where to leave your cart when you're done unloading! C'mon! And finally, a warning: Get your shopper card before you check out. Unlike most stores, you can't ask to sign up when you are checking out. read more

Food Poisoning from bad shrimp I love Harris Teeter, but don't like this one. Most importantly, their meat is often bad. The beef looks red on the top and it is browned on the bottom. And this is from the meat counter! Yesterday I just bought cooked shrimp at 11.99 a pound. I now have food poisoning from it. I am positive it was the shrimp. I don't think they have any quality control for their meat/seafood department. I should have known. The chicken they had behind the counter was that awful yellow color that it gets when it is old. After I feel up to it, I will be bringing the remaining shrimp back and ask for a refund. However, I won't shop at this one again. I will go to the Harris Teeter on Glebe Road near Ballston. They have much better service. The people behind the meat counter are knowledgable and helpful. I have never had any problems with the meat at that location. The old reason I go to the Army Navy store is because I live 2 blocks away. read more

This store is great! It's clean, well stocked, and has reasonable prices. Harris Teeter is a grocery chain that started in Charlotte, NC, which is also where the original store (a very fancy location colloquially known as the Taj Ma Teeter) is located. I'm super happy they are in DC, because they have pretty good produce, excellent meats and fish, a good bakery, and a wide variety of foods that range from a large organics section to specialty ethnic foods that often surpasses whole foods and other high end chains, This particular store is a joy to shop in. As mentioned, the store is clean and well stocked. It's also well staffed and organized. The checkout lines are short. And people are friendly. The drawback to this location is parking. The lot is shared with a number of other stores and it's really a hassle to park. There is typically a line of 5-10 cars waiting for a spot. But if you are in the area already, perhaps at the mall, this is a great place to grab some quick groceries! read more

Harris Teeter is one of the reasons why I love my job. I often grocery shop during my lunch break. I like that they have the Asian vegetables in the produce section. They are pricier than the Asian grocery stores, but sometime I'm willing to pay for convinience when I'm too lazy to go to the Asian grocery. They have double coupon deal everyday and triple coupon deal several times a year. Friendly and helpful staff especially the lady that works at the seafood counter and Yessica at the pharmacy :-) read more
