The pork and turkey were my favorite meats. Both cooked to perfection and seasoned well with good smoky flavor. The brisket is cut thinner than I like and was also borderline dry...still good, but not great. The beans were too spicy for my liking, but I'm sure many people love them. The potato salad was pretty good, chunky potato and egg in a mustard mayo mix, the way potato salad should be. The sauces were the biggest miss for me. All in all, a very good bbq restaurant.

Hidden gem alert. I…read morewas headed to Bham from St Louis and someone told me this place was famous for its legendary pork steak. Naturally, I drove a good bit out of my way to investigate this pork steak for myself. It is in fact legendary and you should go here for yourself if you're ever within range of this place. To start, it's in a very small town and the vibes are as down-home as it gets. It's got a solid menu of recognizable bbq options and plenty of seating to accommodate your group. It's clean and the people are as friendly as could be. Service was quick, prices were beyond reasonable. Now on to this pork steak. I, myself do not have a lot of experience with pork steaks so I'll do my best to describe what I had. It looks like a steak. It weights 2lbs. It's on the bone and fork-tender. The fat is rendered perfectly and when you go at this thing with a fork and knife, it basically falls apart into what you'd normally find on a pulled pork sandwich. It was smoked beautifully, it was flavorful and delicious. I'm never going to forget it. I understand why they're famous for it. Just amazing. The au gratin potatoes were excellent as well and I'd definitely order this plate and everything on it again. Long story short this is an out of the way, hole in the wall kind of place in a small town. If you're passing by on the nearest interstate, it's worth it to plan a little excursion to it just to take in the deliciousness that they're providing. 5 stars all around.

The waitress was a piece of work, very homey and its the kind of place that when ordering and trying to decide on what to order, adjacent table will chime in and offer their advice. I got the ribs-wet really succulent and as good as anything I've had in Memphis, very tasty and not needing much of any BBQ sauce. the sides also very good. Only downside to the place is no alcohol of any kind sold here.

The reviews were very positive, so I drove a bit out of my way to find Mike & Zack's, which was a bit of a hole in the wall, nearly always a good sign for me. I was the first customer of the day as the door was locked when I tried to enter. Must say I was a bit disappointed. For the pulled pork BBQ sandwich, there was an upgrade to more meat, which I did. I ordered baked beans as my side. Well, the upgrade to large was surprisingly small. The beans came in an extremely small container. There was one choice of sauce, which was OK, but I like a little more kick. Couldn't eat two bites of the sandwich as they were gristle. The decorations with all their awards was impressive. Maybe it was because it was so early in the day, but the bar was set pretty low.
