Hidden gem alert. I was headed to Bham from St Louis and someone told me this place was famous for its legendary pork steak. Naturally, I drove a good bit out of my way to investigate this pork steak for myself. It is in fact legendary and you should go here for yourself if you're ever within range of this place. To start, it's in a very small town and the vibes are as down-home as it gets. It's got a solid menu of recognizable bbq options and plenty of seating to accommodate your group. It's clean and the people are as friendly as could be. Service was quick, prices were beyond reasonable. Now on to this pork steak. I, myself do not have a lot of experience with pork steaks so I'll do my best to describe what I had. It looks like a steak. It weights 2lbs. It's on the bone and fork-tender. The fat is rendered perfectly and when you go at this thing with a fork and knife, it basically falls apart into what you'd normally find on a pulled pork sandwich. It was smoked beautifully, it was flavorful and delicious. I'm never going to forget it. I understand why they're famous for it. Just amazing. The au gratin potatoes were excellent as well and I'd definitely order this plate and everything on it again. Long story short this is an out of the way, hole in the wall kind of place in a small town. They offer 3 homemade sauces but there's no need because the meat itself is so flavorful. They come with 2 sides and an amazing piece of Texas toast slathered in butter. Going downhill fast. Just a well known name living off and outdated reputation. Scalloped potatoes came out all but icebox cold. For the first time ever my wife and I both HAD to cut the pork steak with a knife. It tasted like it was cooked in an oven. This was not bbq. After waiting 45 minutes what a letdown. Even the toast was burnt. We live within just a few minutes of this place and ate here many many times over the years. I'm not sure what has changed so badly in this place in recent years. Our kids had been bragging about the pork steak at this local BBQ place in Missouri about an hour from where they live in NE Arkansas. We finally got a chance to go and try it out. We had to wait about ten minutes to be seated as it was a busy Saturday lunch time. This place has been around awhile and you can tell they have continued to add buildings on each side of them as they continue to expand their dining rooms. The main area has a bar with pool tables with smoking as an option. There are also additional eating areas that are non-smoking with more traditional dining room seating. We started with some jalapeño poppers which were okay. I ordered the BBQ sampler with half a pork steak, 3 ribs, and some chopped meat. I added sides of scalloped potatoes and baked beans along with a side dinner salad. All meats were served dry coated their famous spice rub and along with a container of more rub if you want it they also offer three different BBQ sauces (regular, hot, and sweet). My favorite was the ribs with the hot sauce. Excellent! Pork steak and chopped meat were good too but a little dry for my taste. Scalloped potatoes were rich and creamy and you also get a side of buttered Texas toast. My wife had the half chicken and she loved it. Her french fries were just okay but we both loved the vinegary baked beans. No room for dessert but it looked like they had some options. Service was excellent throughout the meal especially from the bus person who continually came by to get us extra napkins, refill our drinks, and get us to go boxes. In a town of 600 people along Road B in the middle of nowhere southeast Missouri is this place. Well, I usually don't rank a place alone on just one item but the pork steak here is Leg-end-ary! It comes on a plate by itself, has an excellent seasoning to it, and is really tender. I love sauce so much but I almost considered eating it without the sauce. There are other things to like from here like 3 pretty good BBQ sauces...a tangy mild, a hot version of the mild, and a sweet sauce. I chose baked beans, okra, and scalloped potatoes as my sides and they were all good. But the pork steak is the real attraction here! How is it that I haven't reviewed one of our favorite BBQ joints of all time? We ate here frequently when my hubs lived down the road. In all of those times, I can't say that we ever experienced bad service. Strawberry is always happy to see us and often has a cigar for my hubby and always has a hug for me. We've been there when they were super busy, but the waitresses have never been rude. In fact, they probably have the best wait staff in the area as far as appearance, as in, they're all clean and don't have meth mouth. (If you've dined out in this area, you know what I mean.) Now for the food: it's some of the best BBQ you'll ever taste. The ribs are spot on. They're perfectly cooked and the rub is great. Strawberry was a competitive pitmaster and it shows. The pulled pork, burgers and catfish are great as well. My favorite side is definitely the scalloped potatoes. The shining star of this place, without a doubt, is the humongous 1 1/2 inch pork steak that's always tender enough to cut with a fork. I've never had anything like it anywhere else, and I've eaten a lot of BBQ! The prices are great. For a pork steak large enough for two with three sides and a drink, you can expect to spend less than $15. They also have a bar with a small beer selection and mixed drinks. Arrived over an hour before closing and when we ordered we were told they were out of a side and had one chicken left. Placed our order for the BBQ sampler and about the time we should have gotten our meal we were told they were out of the half pork steak but we could get extra chopped meat in it's place. Asked if we could get 2 extra bones of ribs instead and were told no. Paid $5 for our 2 teas and left to drive an hour and a half home. Some of the best BBQ that I've ever had, all at a place in literally the middle of nowhere. They've had famous people and some Cardinals players sign the walls over the years, so you know the food must be good to get them to come out all this way. I had the pork steak, which I had never heard of anyone doing but was told it was a great meal. And that it was. It was like slicing into a very large piece of pulled pork each time, as it was that tender. The spicy sauce was outstanding, and I got a taste of the ribs which were fantastic as well. The steak that I had was so large that I was able to take some of it home, and use it to make 2 full sandwiches the next day. One star is reserved because of the service, which I have to say was pretty awful. The waitresses were not nice, the food took forever, and asking the staff for anything was a real chore. I have had their food at catered events multiple times. The catered food is always good, however the food in the restaurant has been terrible every time I have tried It. number one, often times they are out of food, if they do have it, it has been dry and bland. Many locals in southeastern MO have raved about the BBQ at Strawberry's since I moved here and have been dying to try it! Last week, I happened to be at an event catered by Strawberry's--A food wish fulfilled :)!!! The pork steak was excellent! The meat was juicy, well-flavored, and fell apart with every bite I took! The pork steak definitely lives up to its reputation and is quite possibly, the best I have ever had! I could not help myself and had to go back for seconds! Needless to say, I was in a food coma for the rest of the afternoon! The ribs were good, nothing comparable to some of the well-known BBQ places in Memphis or Texas, but tasty. If it were just on food, I would give Strawberry's 5 stars. I had the small rib plate that came with 2 sides. I went for the fried okra and scalloped potatoes, and it also came with a slice of toast. Based on food alone, I would come back, but I'm knocking it two stars for the inconsiderate and plain rude service we received. I came to Strawberry's with 5 other family members to eat dinner on a Monday night. I hopped out of the car before everyone else so I could try to get our seating arrangement figured out. Since their backroom is closed on Monday, seating is limited to the bar area. Three small tables that would not have been large enough for our party of 6 were cluttered with dirty dishes. I asked two waitresses what the best thing for our larger party to do was and they replied rudely, "wait". Normally, I wouldn't have been so miffed by this, but I was with my 78-year-old aunt who uses a walker and needed to sit. Their complete unconcern with her needs bothered me immensely. When two of the tables finally were cleared, we asked if we could push two of them together so we could sit together and the other waitress snapped at us and said that we can't be in her way. When I asked what she would prefer us to do, she said, "Sit separately". After the initial seating issues were settled, everything went smoothly until the end of the meal when I asked our waitress if she would mind taking our picture - I hadn't seen this part of my family since I was 8 years old and probably won't find myself in this part of the country for some time - and she said "No. I don't do technology." So, I had to ask another patron to take the picture, who as it turns out, just quit working at Strawberry's because......everyone was so rude! read more

The dry rub was the same on both and an excellent balance of salty, spicy, and sweet. The pork steak was so tender I could put my fork in it, twist, and it would fall apart. Slow cooking at its best. My wife was able to pull the bones out of the ribs. The serving sizes were large and there was more than enough food. We also tried the fried pickles and loved them. I've eaten a lot of Strawberry's seasoning on pork steaks, ribs, chicken, etc so I was excited to get to visit their home. I ordered the pork steak (after waiting for around 30 minutes to be seated and another 15 minutes to order), and was sorely disappointed because it tastes more like a roast than a pork steak. Ribs were mediocre at best. Quantity does make up for quality. And it didn't really have the salty strong "Strawberry" type flavor that I have come accustomed to eating. We never received our appetizer and literally sat there for an hour waiting for our food. It is what it is, but we definitely will not be back. Should have driven the extra 30 minutes and went to Lambert's. I've never had a bad experience there. I also failed to mention that there were SMOKERS at this place. For years, I've heard how great the food is here and was excited to go with family during a recent reunion trip. We called ahead four days early because we knew we would have a large party for a Saturday night. We also called to confirm the day before the reservation. Once we arrived (on time and with the entire party), we found another party had just been seated at our table. Even though our name and time of reservation was on the table. The staff was terrible. They left us standing in the entrance crowding other tables for 20 minutes. They were rude and clearly unwilling to accommodate. They didn't apologize and as we were leaving they suggested we take our party of 20 and go to their steak house down the street and put our name on that waitlist. The party who acquired our table knew the staff by name. We can only assume this restaurant caters to locals over reservations. We will not return to this restaurant nor their steak house. read more
